I LOVED The Beatles... instantly. Even though Zep was the in-band at the time (whom I also loved and never saw live... grrrr), I fell head over heels in love with them and their music and their brief career evolution. However, it was the message... and John's words were to me the strongest. When "Imagine" debuted, I remember thinking how precious and beautiful it was - and it played everywhere for weeks after his death. Those piano chords still bring pain every time I hear it sung or played. RIP
Any hope we'd heard of a possible Beatles reunion died as well that day... and there were so many rumors back then - you have no idea. I never saw them live as bi the time I was old enough to truly appreciate them in my adolescence they were no longer for about four years. My mom brought home the White Album from the library one day and it forever changed my life and how I viewed music... I was like you, 13, struggling with my identity, being abused and bullied - found solace in his/their music.
I thought it may be Paul until more news came a few minutes later it was John and they interrupted programming nationally to cover the tragedy and those scenes of him being carried into the ambulance. My heart sank... a beautiful loving free spirit was extinguished at the finger of a madman. I hope to see him in Heaven, albeit not too soon - lol. I was forever changed bi that tragedy - my innocence died a little that day. I was only 20, days away from my 21st birthday. Tears flowed from my soul.
In my opinion, there has never been a bigger individual tragedy than that December night... here was a man who believed in peace to the depth of his soul. He had found love and was a very devoted father... he'd found peace within himself aand was just coming into his own identity when BANG... it was all snuffed out in a few seconds. When that news broke that a former-Beatle was shot, I prayed for him and his soul - he lived for a few minutes, albeit unconscious... I hope my prayer reached him.
I'm reading the book John Lennon: The Life and I think many Lennon fans are angry. Angry that he was taken from us so long ago. And those born after his death feel the pain through the fact that his music felt close enough to a generation were we will never get the chance to meet John Winston Lennon, only meet the memory he left us. I too was born long after his murder.
