Man so nostalgic. I remember how much my girlfriend was ogled everywhere we went in Osaka in '86.
LOL to the Asahi vending machines, we hit the Kirin machines as I recall, it was great not having to worry about open containers.....or legal drinking age.
Yea. I love backstreet of ikebukuro..or alleys..whts difference..I worked there for a few years as well as sinjuku. I think this is very rare film to shot there..THanks a lot. I love wandring around back of the city. however, most of it has changed...sad.
I find it interesting that back then you could video in shops, in arcades, on streets etc without people coming over and telling you to stop. Also when people saw they were getting filmed they smiled and waved etc. Now days you get out your little camera that's hardly even noticeable and someone will come straight over and tell you to put it away. Also if anyone sees they're getting filmed they shy away VERY fast! Its sad its got this way, must have been way easier to take videos back then
It certainly was easier to film, and I'm sure it's because of the internet. Today anything can be uploaded instantly for all to see, which often makes people uncomfortable. However, back then, it was always assumed that the video would only be used for home use and therefore, there was nothing threatening about it. So unfortunately, since that time, things have changed for the worse in that regard.
It's sad (because it means I'm getting old), but my kids already have an "80s day" at school, and short shorts are definitely part of the ensemble... which has me thinking, what would a "90s day" look like?
thanks for sharing but in the video you guys look kinda arrogant, looking around like it's some exotic place when it's how those people actually live, walking all around their front windows and going through their private bins acting up. no offense, you seem cool now, but back then, it looked kinda rude the way you guys walked all over the place like you owned it.
However, note that it was because we were consciously in front of a large video camera, and so wherever we went, people understood what we were doing was for the camera and did not take much offense to it. The camera, BTW, was a large shoulder mount VHS unit similar in size to what TV stations use today, so it was very obvious we were doing things for the camera, and not necessarily just being arrogant.
Anyway, thanks for watching. More videos posted if you're interested.
thanks for the understanding response. people might take offense to these videos in the wrong way that i did or maybe not. i just wanted to give a heads up on how i felt upon seeing these videos. as you are providing these videos, hopefully they are sensitive to respecting the country, the people, and the culture.
i appreciate your collection and that you were not completely offended by my comment. keep up the good work. i apologize that i did no word my initial comment better and may have come off a bit negative.
Wow, what a great footage! Is that back alley "Golden Gai"? They have seldom changed since '60s, old Tokyo where oyajis sing Enka till late night. Thanks for posting! BTW I always wonder which one of those young guys you are? Sorry I cannot tell.
And also, holy cow! That's the opening song for Super Nanny! :O xD

Thanks for uploading these videos! I really wanted to see how Japan was like in the 80's. I'll miss the 80's so much even though I was born in '90 :(

seriously, im going to take a screenshot of the guy with the sun glasses and model myself after him.

Yeah, I think most guys owned a pair of RayBans back then. It was a return to the late 50s/early 60s fashions (straight leg pants and thin ties).

thanks. Japan really seemed in it's prime back in the late 80's. It was like the highest-techest place in the world at the time.
stuffums 3 years ago
I guess it was in it's prime - relatively speaking. It was fun to be there back then.

hahahaha You had a lot more hair back then, and short shorts....This was so 80s haha
Do you still talk to any of the people in this video?

"Looking For A New Love"..... Jody Watley
I should've added it to the description like I did on the earlier 80s vids
NichiBeiTrader 3 years ago
Trippy. The BGM is spot on perfect. Thinking back, yeah I sort of almost sometimes wore shorts like that too. ^o^
ElevenColors 3 years ago
It's getting harder and harder to find appropriate BGM as I edit these. Appreciate the comment.
Don't you remember those classic Lakers-Celtics games when everyone wearing those shorts?!! It's good that some fads don't last.
NichiBeiTrader 3 years ago
There's always Rick Astley.
Never been much of a sports person, but I really haven't paid attention ever since Bird stopped playing. :-)

I was already 'Rickrolled' once by Ericsurf6 so I've had my lifetime fill of Rick Astley!

Awesome as always, this 80s series is excellent. I hope you have a lot more to come, do you??

I'm guessing two or three more. We'll see how much I can pull from the original VHS that's worth something.
