  • deym luv this song!

  • Denken, Träumen und über Liebeskummer hinwegkommen....

  • live better than studio version, great song

  • Don't spoil the illuision - they can't be AMERICAN !

  • a classic song ill never forget, nice voice and cutee lead singer tommy shaw ^_^..

  • @NoNeedforNicks, Tommy Shaw is anything BUT EMPTY!!! I get your interpretation& a great song is open to it, but in 1982 he was shy& still growing!!!! Touring is hardcore! Takes a toll on the mind, body&soul. The 80's were a hell to endure for any Band!!! Watch the 1996 or 97 versions, or later!!!! Utube is awesome for watching A musician's EVOLUTION!!!!

  • WOW! Simply Devine talent! Entertaining inflections of sweet AMBROSIA!! Takes your soul to Venice if u let it!!!!!-Music today is like processed food!!! With talent as scattered as it is, it still is on the soulful,"RAW FOODS" section for "US"& "JUNK FOODS"section MARKETED for "THEM"......

  • very nice song!

  • Styx came out of a suburban basement ... duh..in Chicago.

  • schönes lied :)

  • @NoNeedForNicks and everyone else who really doesn't get this song:

Hey Folks....Sorry to rain on your death parade, but this song is not about death or anything else of that nature. Tranquility Base is the name of Tommy's family ranch. It's nothing more complicated than the fact that he, like anyone in the public eye, needs a place where they can get a little peace and quiet.

  • @LadySunner

Thank you for posting this, I was about to when I saw your comment. :) It was simply a place he grew up folks!! Thank you again!! It doesn't always have to be a deep interpretation does it?

    Thank you again! -A

  • I taught myself the mandolin, my first stringed instrument, inspired by this song. I was a pretty big Styx fan through in high school (late 70s). Great song by a great band!

  • Another facet of Styx that sets them apart from other bands, they put a lot of effort into their clothing, - Class.

  • scary song.not only it is cleverly disguised suicidal song but please take a look at his eyes.they are empty.no sparkle.dead feeling while singing although i admit he has a great voice.but i feel the grave if i focus more on him.really,no impressions,no reactions, nothing at all.as if he was the dead man walking.

  • Good stuff! I like the kinda unpluged version

  • great performance, like this song since I was a child.

  • This is one of my favorits of the 80`s

  • Beer, Marlboros and old time bad-ass Rock Music every friday night in my balcony. that's it

  • this is music. 60s 70s 80s 90s. fuck guitar hero, fuck the modern shit. fuck facebook too

  • @PEDROCLASSIC why fuck facebook? what does facebook have to do with anything?.... without modern shit we would not have Youtube which could be the greatest invention of all time.

  • vtu hyvä

  • I was born that time... and it goes through my life

  • Where can get this? Video I love it . It was Tommy at his best even then.

  • tommy without hair LOL

    styx forever guys!!!!!!!!!!

  • the guy on the bass looks like freddie mercury :D

  • Could Tommy even get in a bar in 1982? How old is he here, like 15?

  • @65metal he was in his late twenties I think

  • @65metal lol he's 29 in this clip.

  • Boat on the river Styx

  • Quite right jorgedanymc:) It's Greek Mythology actually. let me add that the gates of Hades were protected by a fearsome three-headed dog called Kerveros. I love this song btw , reminds me of my youth....

  • Shut the HELL up!

  • What is it HELL? Capitalism? Exploiting each other and Earth or what? Fucking Hell?

  • Interesting song. One can´t deny it has a depressing yet peaceful mood. If we add the fact that the name of the band Styx is actually the name of a river that (according to mithology) surrounded the Hades (Hell or underworld), we could associate the idea of floating in a boat, tranquility and so on with death. So yes, it coul be a cleverly disguised suicidal song. Whatever the meaning, this song is beautiful, and an all time favorite of mine.

  • @jorgedanymc

Also note how the music is written kind of like a Zorba, which infirms the idea of the Hellenistic aspect of it all.

  • @jorgedanymc thats some deep stuff man. never thought of this song that way.

  • @jorgedanymc

interressing point of view... Never thought of it that deep..but good point..

The song itself is in a perfect melodic moood.. it's a kind of a melody you cannot dislike...

Now I have to sleep on your very interressing point of view.... (Sorry my bad spelling)

  • @jorgedanymc I agree 100 %. The best song in history of mankind.

  • This always reminds me of my trip to France! beautiful song

  • güzel şarkı

  • Whatever the meaning, the performance and the song is wonderful...

  • You're awesome, Tommy Shaw!

  • I remember this song, everytime when I go to river..I love this song..

  • let me take you back to your boat on the river.

  • Another explanation Tommy gives is that this song was inspired by a need "to get away from it all." The lyric, "Long roads lead to tranquility base" is a reference to the farm he owned in Michigan during the 70s-mid 80s named Tranquility Base.

  • All this sounds lovely, the mythology and what Tommy is saying .. however, that is NOT the inspiration for this song. HIS explanation is that it was inspired by his trip to France.

And yes, he DOES look like David Spade here. I remember watching David when he first started out, whether it was SNL or one of those Police Academy movies and thinking, yup, he looks like a young Tommy Shaw .. or at least a relative!

  • tommy shaw looks like david spade

  • watch?v=16VSqbj9meA for lyrics !

  • my fav song for the band

  • Wonderful.I wish I could take a day to make up songs with the band.Great song for a beginner guitarist.Steven of Lewiston,Maine.

  • Great song! Can somebody explain to me the message of this song?

  • you know the meaning of the bands Name Styx = A river in Hell.

The myth is that if you go hell you have to cross the river styx to get to the gates which is the entrance of hell its self.

  • Hades my friend, not Hell

The ferryman's name was Charon and you had to pay him some sort of toll to be able to get a ride ;)

Therefore people often used to plut pennies or quarters on the eyes of dead people to make sure they would be able to pay for their ride.

  • In greek mythology the toll was an obol (=ancient greek coin and it was put in the mouth of the dead. Also Charon's ride was one-way: straight to hell.

  • @9threalm Don't pay the ferryman!

  • It is suicidal in my opinion. Styx is one of the five rivers that circled hell, it was the river of hate. So "all roads lead to tranquility base" all rivers leed to hell where he wants to go to find peace. He is so sad by the life he has lived he wants to die: "take me down to my boat on the river and I won't cry out anymore".

  • The river Styx was the border between the Earth and Hades (the underworld). In greek mythology there is no such thing as Hell.

  • I'm sorry to disappoint you but Hades is the god of hell (or the underworld, call it as you want), and I would know that because I am Greek!

  • watch?v=0XeVvA2qWk8

  • fantastic song... memories :(

  • cool music nice to hear!!!!

  • Styx Unplugged (well mostly unplugged sounds like a Moog synth playing in the song intro) way before unplugged was considered cool.

  • Just wonderful............................

  • sometimes make me cry... I was born in 1982, maybe that was performed that time

  • Take me back to my boat on the river

I need to go down , I need to come down

Take me back to my boat on the river

So I won't cry out anymore.

Time stands still as I gaze in the water

It eases me down, touching me gently

With the waters that flow pass my boat on the river . So I won't cry out anymore.

The river is deep (wise), the river it touches my life like the waves on the sand

And all roads lead to tranquility base

Where the frown on my face dissapears..

  • Great to hear this again (after such a loong time)

  • das iss Musik..cool!

  • Cool clip. Tommy looks like he's 8!

  • @brywool LOL I was thinking the same thing!!!!

  • it's just a great song!!! for ME my favorit since .... hmmm let's say something over 20 years ;-)

  • 100 percent agree. the same warm recollections.

    adore this song.

  • I think Tommy Shaw was too underated. He made Styx a Rock band. Without him they would have never made Crystal Ball and only been a sappy love song band. No disrespect to Dennis because he made them rich but Tommy was a rocker.

  • Sappy love song band? You never heard any of their RCA wooden nickel stuff have you? Or heard John Creweleski's stuff, know im not spelling that right. They were hard rockin way before Tommy showed up. There is a post on youtube for 'Best Thing'. Its a DDY song but it shows the band in its original incarnation

  • I have no words to say!!!

    Just amazing!!

I just can't stop singing it!

  • este vidio é lindo pbs.

  • Chuck Panozzo looks like Freddie Mercury.

    Was this the Kilroy tour?

  • He was so young in the past... :D I love it

  • super melodie

  • This is such a timeless piece! I love it!

  • very good

  • It reminds me of "Lady In Black", by Uriah Heep.

  • Uriah Heep and Styx are my favourite bands :-)

  • best song ever ...

  • a damn great song! Classic!!!

  • Maybe it was playing when I was born in 1982

  • Super!!!!!!

  • Great!!

  • he looks good with both long hair and short hair, but i really like his look in this video

  • hey did u put river or rLver?

  • you rock guys!!!

  • Tommy looks A LOT BETTER with shorter hair. Too bad he didn't keep it short in 2007... it looks cute on him.

  • The real Styx, one of my favorite songs.

  • he isnt in a boy band hes in a rock band...

  • Yeah.. I know.. But this IS 2007 afterall.. not 1975.

Even Bon Jovi and Kevin Cronin cut their hair... and they STILL LOOK COOL! AND have A LOT of STYLE!

  • Tommy had short hair in 99. He grew it out after that to get the "Rock N Roll" look.

  • His hair was also long during the Damn Yankees years in the early 90s...

  • he could try John Rzeznik's hair (he of Goo Goo Dolls). he'd look super sexy in it!!! yum!!!

  • No way! Tommy looks incredibly hot with long hair. I say "If you got it, flaunt it"!! But, that's just my opinion. I love long hair.

  • I agree with you. Long hair is ageless, just like Styx. He might have looked "cute" with short hair, but he looks handsome with long hair.

  • very good

  • This song overwhelms me the same today as it did the 1st time I heard it. Thnx. What's up with the appearance comments? What did you look like in '82! Listen to the MUSIC! & He looks great! Cheers!

  • thats wonderful.......im from Turkey.its the best song ive ever heard it yet

  • It's one of their most loved songs. But then again, every Styx fan has a group of their favorite Styx songs...

  • This is one of my Absolute Favs along with Crystal Ball.Tommy is one of the Greatest Musicians EVER! Cheers!

  • This is best song of Styx and song forever!

  • Reminds my of boating through San Antonio :-) or my wife (down)? :-)

  • Tommy is pretty sweaty

  • Tommy looks horrendous with short hair, love the song.

  • only styx i wont crrry out anymore:DD:D:D

  • ROCK ON!

  • Pure Styx
