i can understand the bowe haters, because really, for all the potential he had, he really fell short. he may have lacked discipline, or his fights with holyfield could have aged him prematurely. doesn't matter.
bottom line is, during his (admittedly brief) prime, bowe could have beaten ANYBODY in the history of heavyweight boxing. his skills were that good. tall, rangy fighters (like ali and lennox) could have given him problems, but his skill would have made him competitive against anyone.
don't get me wrong, tyson in his prime was a murderer, but bowe's size alone was enough to give tyson problems. bowe's ability on the inside might have been enough to make the difference. i still think only the taller fighters who were able to control distance stood any chance against a prime bowe.

Bowe would have probably beat Tyson. Every fight Tyson had problems in was against fighters that were big, powerful, and mobile. Lewis and Bowe were the best of that type in the 80's. Bowe wouldn't have backed away from Tyson at all, giving Tyson his best chance in the first two rounds with a slug fest with either man possibly k.o.'d at that point. Bowes great chin would have perhaps made the difference here. If it went beyond four, Bowe would have worn Tyson down and knocked him out for sure.

i can understand the bowe haters, because really, for all the potential he had, he really fell short. he may have lacked discipline, or his fights with holyfield could have aged him prematurely. doesn't matter.
bottom line is, during his (admittedly brief) prime, bowe could have beaten ANYBODY in the history of heavyweight boxing. his skills were that good. tall, rangy fighters (like ali and lennox) could have given him problems, but his skill would have made him competitive against anyone.

don't get me wrong, tyson in his prime was a murderer, but bowe's size alone was enough to give tyson problems. bowe's ability on the inside might have been enough to make the difference. i still think only the taller fighters who were able to control distance stood any chance against a prime bowe.

Lame excuse to hold a second fight (TKO4- Bowe) a few months later.
Bowe started it, and it was an unnecessary bitch move, but one only done due to all the holding, for which Tillery was going to be DQ'd for in a round or two.
Tillery responded with his feet, because his hands clearly weren't doing much. Kicking could be cause for an automatic DQ, really. It's not the best ending to a fight, but this wasn't a fight in the first place.

Two quick points:
1. Bowe - If only he could have kept his weight around where he was at this fight throughout his career....he could have been a top 5 heavyweight of all time.
2. Tillery - It's too bad he will always be remembered for this match. He was a top notch sparring partner who pushed many very good boxers to reach their potential. Unfortunately, he couldn't bring his gym successes into his professional fights. He could have been a decent heavyweight at the time.

Take note that the first time Tillery starts clutching like an octopus, the referee gives him the warning he deserves, with the clear implication of future point deductions if he persists. Yet in Ali/Frazier II, referee Tony Perez scratched his butt for 12 rounds doing nothing while Ali hugged Joe like a timid octopus 130 times. No warning, no point deductions, no impact on the cards. Guess the rules didn't apply to the Greatest.

Tyson's prime was '88 or '89. Lewis was fighting in the olympics in 1988 and didn't turn pro until the summer of 1989. Lewis BEAT Bowe in '88 Olympic final. Bowe refuses to fight Lewis when he was WBC champ, instead threw away his belt. You're just yet ANOTHER ignorant American(yawn) who cannot handle the fact that Lewis smashed 'your' boys. strange decision this. the bell rang and the ref stepped in and the first person to do anything after the bell was Bowe who landed a punch and it couldnt be described as just on the bell or just after. it was then that Tillery started kicking back. How Tillery got thrown out is beyond me.
