You have the technique which is great. All you need to do is practice to a click track more often, practice your single strokes, double strokes and paradiddles. Defiantly work on your dynamics too, You rush a little bit when coming out of fills or extending your arms to hit the cymbals. Man but great job, not too bad at all.
@sheldini2002 Couldn't have said it better myself. I completely agree, and I've been working on that stuff a lot since this video (about 2 years?). Thanks for the insightful comments. :)
Well done bro! Sounds great! Don't listen to the ignorant haters! Keep playin...Carter is a musical genius and drumming is one of the few instruments that you can improve on with age. keep playin.ok frankie
you even have your drums/cymbals set up like he does. good job man, wish i could play open handed. and keep the "lol"s coming, they are what make performances shine!!! btw, what snare you banging on??

nice work.. i few tips i know you would be much better... keep in mind the beat all the time, concentration on all the time your playing, some kick bass wasnt unnecessary but its ok as long as we dont exagerate, you were playing i milisecond faster than original and finally feel the groove your playing feel the song you know what i mean
Very nice playing - I'm still working on that particular drum riff at the beginning between 0:12 and 0:17 seconds. I can't remember the name of the riff, but I'm really having a tough time with it. Any help or hints?
It's called "herta" I think. I call it the Carter thing.
I'd say the best thing to do, as in almost every case, is to start it really slow, and work your way up to speed. I was thinking of doing a video of all of Carter's most difficult/most popular fills and explaining how to do 'em. We'll see. :) Any other questions, let me know.
Thanks, man. Looking back, I think I can do a better job of this. It's harder to straight copy someone than to do your own thing, nameen? Every time I'd do something wrong/different, I would stop and start over b/c of how crazy DMB fans are.
After I did this, I was like, "eff it...mistakes are part of music. post that shit." :-)
As far as what our friend carter does being more complex than travis barker, you cant deny it as far as technical and rhythmical content but that doesnt in any way discredit or short the difficulty. I always like to think of comparing drummers by what physically comes out of their hands impossible unless they're playing the same notes. but rather judge a good drummer at their ability to recognize what the music, situation, or atmosphere calls for and delivering tastefully w/out going overboard.
found your video from a comment you left on a travis barker video saying that your playing is way more complicated. i found it a little arrogant, sounds like you're trying to tell the world you are better than someone else.... You are good, dont get me wrong, but i dont see anything you are doing that Barker cant do himself, but visa versa as well. dont take it the wrong way. You called barker out on youtube, now i'm just giving you my opinion. Take or leave it. Good job with the playing.
Your comment's not without merit: it was wrong of me to say that. However, I think you saw my comment out of context.
Someone challenged "can you do that? better yet, do you know ANYONE that can do that???" I responded, "I could easily do that." He then said, "keep thinkin that bro keep thinkin that," so I wanted to defend myself. In saying that what I did was more complex, I was indicating that I COULD do what Travis was doing in his video, not that I was necessarily better.
it is understandable that people do take things the wrong way on comments left on youtube, i'll admit i'm not above that. Therefor, i apollogise for not knowing the whole story of your conversation. i apollogise for any deflation, haha, and want to add that i never said you werent as good as barker. And i'll admit there are some things you are doing in the video that i wish i was up to par with.(your foot double foot work)
lol Don't sweat it. No apology necessary. As far as the double bass stuff goes, just keep at it. Honestly, I was really terrible at it until only a little while ago. One day it just started working for me. Practice slow, then build up speed as you improve your control.
Let me first say how cool it is that both of you have the humility to admit that you're wrong and accept any sort of criticism, I've been playing drums for 12+ yrs and as i'm sure you know, musicians in general( drummers especially ) don't always take kindly to " deflation " (lol).
well, first thank you for noticing our conversation and seeing that we both arent above taking notes from one another. i think its a combination of maturity, and professionalism. I myself have been playing drums for 14 years and i now do it professionally full time. Which i'm very fortunate for, but i didnt get there by being cocky. I think arrogance gets you nowhere. Staying open minded and knowing that you can always be better by learning from others is key :-) thanks for your comment.
Hey nice work man (from a fellow open handed drummer and Carter fan). I'm from PDF, HUGEEEEE DMB fan, you did it justice. I have one DMB cover on my account. The stereotypical Ants Marching of course :P check it out if you get the chance.
Hey man! Thanks for the comment! Yeah, some tempo issues, I know. I don't like to make excuses, but I'll blame at least some of those on the fact that I couldn't hear myself. :-P Those headphones block out everything when there's music going through them. Except the china stack, which tends to block out all the music in there. :-P Craziness!
Yeah man, I used to be like that if use acoustics drum... it hard :( (Lucky me I use electric drum for this songs ... XD)
But I believe If we practice more and more we can build Our-Self Metronome, I mean whatever the condition we still can in tempo with the songs... and I still learn it now :)
Yeah, I generally play open-handed, though my right hand is still dominant. With regard to the video response, I made my video a response to a DMB video in the official Dave Matthews channel, and it took the response away from yours. Sorry, bud!
Those are Zildjian Oriental China Trash cymbals, an 18" stacked on a 20". Carter used this setup quite a while ago. He now uses an 18" Oriental Classic China stacked on a 19" Zildjian K China.
lol I appreciate the defense, my friend, but Mr. Chris up there is a friend of mine just goofing around. Thanks for the comment! Tell your friends! :-P
