  • i thought it really does slam the door on his face.

  • dear me ahahhah...... rather pathetic in a nowadays perspective... but well... its tradition.

I'd rather have that big fat "order" guy be sitting there on a macbook and the guy who was banging on the door sends an email on his iphone.

Then he runs round going BRAPPPP and acting all gangster wearing a hoodie, saying "EHH gayboys, her fucking majesty wanna see yer an' shit"

and the order guy goes "KTHNXBAI"

  • I long for the day that Dennis skinner shouts out, tell her to piss off, stop taking our money and bugger off to Germany. But you're not supposed to tell the truth are you!

  • That was probably Dennis Skinner, of course it bloody is!!!, he's the only one with the guts to tell the truth about the royal family!

  • Yes, thats funny

Yet i wonder how funny it would be if the queen had her Guards slam those doors shut and butcher the lot of these so called

    "honourable" MPs

I say reinstate the monarchy, ^^

  • Skinner brought the house down here!!! It's a pleasure that so many MP's think the Monarchy is ridiculous!!!

  • I hope Skinner always does this, who's going to shout out the truth when he leaves Parliament?!?!

  • He says Have you got Helen Mirren on standby? Which must rank as one of the best comments ever uttered in protest at the State Opening!!

  • what does he say at 50 seconds?

  • I like how some of the politicians try not to laugh, but realise it's futile to try!!!

  • Did Dennis Skinner once say "You haven't brought Philip with you have you?" or words to that effect?!?!?

  • He said "Has she brought Camilla with her?" when there were reports that the Queen and Camilla were on bad terms with each other.

  • Will someone be a splendid fellow and put up the State Opening where Dennis Skiinner said "I bet he drinks Carling Black Label!!" It sounds hilarious!

  • One of Dennis's best was "I hope you've locked the door behind you!!!!" following the trespasser at Buckingham Palace!

  • Do you remember when Skinner said "Tell her to read the guardian?" Someone whould find that and put it on here immediately!!

  • Once skinner shouted on blackrods arrival " ey up, here comes puss in boots" classic

  • Another Skinner classic was when he shouted Has she locked the door behind her? (Following the intruder at Buckingham Palace!!!!)

  • wah.......to show parliment power?

    ur joking ryt????

  • Nope.. it's a noble tradition. A left-over (or perhaps I'll put it better if I would call it a reminder) of the days of absolutism.

  • lol i would't call it "noble"

  • It is if you understand the meaning and origin of the tradition

  • yh true

although been living in the UK all my life, still dont get many of their traditions

but one things clear, politics here is a load of curuption

  • Yes but then again- politics has become a byword for corruption.

It's the same here and the same all over the world.

  • so true

    the three pillars of politics

    MONEY

    POWER

    GREED

  • The politicians are corrupt bastards. The institutions are still sound. We should keep our traditions.

  • You can hear Dennis Skinner also mumbling something at Black Rod when he comes through the door!!! Hilarious!

  • lol, he says "Do you have Helen Mirren on standby?"

  • HE SAYS IT LISTEN

  • Please put up the one where Dennis Skinner says "Has she brought Camilla with her?" That one was hilarious!!! I think it was during the 2005 Opening of Parliament.

  • What exactly did Skinner say that time? I could not really make it out.

  • Have you got Helen Mirren on standby

  • It's a pile of antiquated crap - the trouble with Britain is that it's stuck in the past.

We also have way too many MP's (651) for a country of about 60-odd million. Lots of expenses and other fiddles to go round, all paid by taxes and extra con-taxes known as 'green taxes'.

  • Out-of-date stupid ceremony. waste of time. MPs are all lying cheating scumbags!

  • It's not outdated. It's the physical representation of an unwritten constitution. It symbolises the independence and sovereignity of parliament. Black Rod is what Speaker Martin will never be. Black Rod stopped Tony Blair from muscling in on the Queen Mother's funeral, yet Mr Martin let's the police run rampant throughout the Houses of Parliament without a warrant! SEND HIM TO THE TOWER. You should have more respect for venerable traditions.

  • And you sonny boy, are stuck in the past. I am amazed that you believe the bullshit about Tony Blair and the Queen Mother! Get a life FUCKWIT!

  • It's my right to be stuck in the past. That's my life. I believe the story about Black Rod because it is true.

  • Whatever!

  • Could somebody put up Dennis Skinner's other hilarious comments to Black Rod, including the instruction to bar the doors, has she brought Camilla with her and who shot the harriers!!! He makes a pompous and extravagant ceremony actually worth watching!

  • Dennis skinner breaks the tension here so brilliantly, it's like the house was waiting to erupt into laughter all the time!!!

  • What did he say? I can't make it out with my Yankee ears. ; )

  • Britain might be 'relatively' liberal but relative to what?

The facts are plain. Massive state intrusion into the life of the individual, significant curbs on personal freedom and the right to protest, imprisonment without charge (let alone trial), confiscation of private assets 'for the good of the state', down right lies told at elections now conveniently ignored (referendum on the EU which ALL parties promised).

Wake up and smell the coffee UK. This isn't the Britain of 50 years ago..

  • How long can you be in jail without charge? Not very long. Compared to lord Liverpool in the early 19th century where he suspended the right of trial before imprisonment, I'd rather live in modern Britain.

  • Well I bow to your superior knowledge on Lord Liverpool but any of us can be imprisoned and have our assets frozen and taken without charge or trial. 21 days so far - they want 48 next as you'll be aware.

Politically I think modern Britain is in a pretty unpleasant place but at least we can still discuss this openly. Long may it last..

  • meh, people have moaned britain has been in decline since year zero. I'd much rather be part of the modern UK than The hub of the British empire.

  • Ok, firstly it is IMMIGRATION not IMMAGRATION.

Secondly - people are free to vote and free to change the country to whatever they want... the point is they don't care enough. In fact it is you that is crying and ranting about changing Britain.

I DID account for those people when I mentioned only 40% turnout - duh

  • Is immimgration you biggest worry in life... seriously? You can't vote on issues - you vote for a member of parliament to represent you. So Britain must not think like you do.

You still haven't answered and told me who these 'liberals' are. Who the hell are you talking about? Everyone's more liberal than you you facist bastard.

  • fucking traitors!. If it wernt for the royals they wouldnt be sitting on there fat asses talkin shit and ruining the country?. This is why the UK has no patrotism left because of bullshit like that.

  • Who exactly are traitors? What do you mean by the UK has no patriotism left?

  • Ooooh god please. Not another fucking liberal. If your not then there isnt any patriotisim left becuause of them. They say Britains a liberal country now? why? because 9million voted for them? theres a 62million population in the great british nation. It is patriotic but because of the damn liberals doing that we dont see nothing.

  • How do you know if I am a 'liberal'? I just asked a you to explain the seemingly random statements you made.

Who is 'They' that say Britain is a liberal country? And what do you mean about voting?

You seem to refer to patriotism and liberalism as contrasting ideologies, are you?

I can't understand your last sentence, can you clarify?

    Sorry for all the questions.

    regards.

  • Yeah sorry i kinda did snap ey?. You they are ideologies, like Nationalisim. The liberal party say that Britain is a liberal country. And voting. The amount of immagration the liberals are putting in. No one got to vote or have there say about this? they just did it.

  • Sorry, but who are the 'liberals'? Britain IS a western liberal democracy - that is how are political system is. The opposite would be Facist Germany under Hitler, or Iran, or the old USSR and Zimbawe. Whatever one you agree is correct - Britain IS a liberal country.

Do you mind me asking if your consider yourself a Nationalist and why you consider yourself so?

  • Britain is not a liberal country. Its as simple as that. Your going on facisim now. So because i say we arnt a liberal country we have to be natzi germany?. I am a Nationalist but i am far from racist. Nationalist is a person who loves there country and cant let it go down the way it is. The National Front or Natzisim took it way to far theres no need for riots or killing blacks or jews thats mental.

  • You may not be a liberal but how can you say that Britain is not a liberal democracy? What is it then?

I only mentioned nationalism as an example that advocates an authoratarian system of politics - exactly what Britain is not.

I am interested about your nationalist views... what are they?

  • Okay. The only reason we are a "liberal" democracy is purley for the fact liberals are the top party. With 9million votes. So that makes us liberal democracy? do you think we want to?. 9million votes labour get and theres a 62million population. The immagration floods are getting worse and worse and when this all started they did not ask the British citerzens once about our opinion on the matter and still arnt now. They walk around like there god. I want my land back! to the way it always was.

  • The 'liberals' are NOT the 'top' party. The Labour party is, and it is essentially very similar to the opposition.

62 mil people cannot vote - that includes children <18 etc. There was a 40% odd turnout but thats peoples decisions. The Labour party had the most number of seats in the house and formed a government.

Those elections were fair and because we live in a democracy anyone in theory could get into power. If a majority of people in britain wanted nationalilsm, the BNP wud b in power

  • Yes but your not acounting for the people who dont vote because they say "its pointless" and so right they are. Liberals dont listen to athing since when did we get the vote to say we want immagration? you liberals are all the same crying and ranting about changing Britain but when the native people talk you ignore them. I hope you burn.

  • contactwhall- Well said!

  • A nationalist is a little bit different from a patriot.

  • How do you work that one out?.

  • WillSKB88- I agree but patriots are not just a little different from nationalists; they are very different. For instance the patriot cares about their countries standing in the world; the nationalist doesn't trust any 'foreigner', esp if they'rte not white.

  • Crap. a nationalist is someone who supports the embodiment and essence of their country, whereas a patriot is just a name for a dumb idiot that will fall for any warlike claptrap from the government.

  • lanpbx- Whatever. Nationalism is dangerous, isolationist and ultimately self-destructive. And no, patriots do not allways agree with their governments.

  • You don't explain why nationalism is 'dangerous, isolationist and ultimately self destructive.' Also, provide examples of when a 'patriot' would oppose and disobey a government.

  • lanpbx- im actually working on several conversations right now so I hope you will appreciate my relatively short reply for that reason.

I disagree with many of the policies of this particular government- but I still love this country.

Nationalism is against foreign trade and intervention; thats isolationist.

    Nationalism is divisive; thats dangerous

Nationalism is ultimately self-destructive for the above reasons. I would expand these points but as you know, there is a letter limitation.

  • No, nationalism is NOT against foreign trade. All modern economies require resources from different sources. Not sure what you mean about "intervention".

You still haven't explained why Nationalism is divisive.

You say it's self destructive for the "above" reasons. The only self-destructive thing you mention is regard to opposition to free trade, which I have already pointed out is not an inherent feature of nationalism, unless you want to take it to some ridiculous extreme.

  • I hope they never modernise our parliament. This stuff is excellent. It distinguishes us from presidential republics.

  • Semi-literate knuckledragging punk Trotskyite. That's all Skinner is...or ever has been.

  • Talk about a brilliantly timed and executed joke by Dennis!!! Listen to the sustained laughter!! Take note comedians!!

  • "Is Helen Mirren delivering the Queen's speech today?" Hilarious.

  • The slamming of the door in Black Rods face is only to signify the independence of the House of Commons, it does not signify their supremacy at all. This tradition is the result of Charles I barging into the House before the English Civil war to arrest the 5 members. The door was unceremoniously slammed in his gaurds face. As a result of this, no Monarch has ever entered the House of Commons since. All it signifies is the Houses independence. Its a fun little tradition with deep significance.

  • The literal interpretation provided by TJJ5621is true. But the slammimg of the door has tremendous significance. The sovereign power of the United Kingdom is vested in the elected House of Commons. It is not vested in the Monarch. This was informally confirmed in the Glorious Revolution of 1688. This is the lynchpin of our democracy. The culmination of all that has gone before, from Magna Carta in 1215 through to the Civil War of 1640-49 and beyond is vested in the slamming of this door.

  • what wz so funny that they started laughing towards de end?

  • The slamming of the door is more significant than that. It represents the supremacy of the House of Commons over both the House of Lords and the Monarch. The gentleman bearing the stick, called Black Rod, is the personal representative of The Queen, not The Lords. By slamming the door in his face, the House of Commons is underlining its supreme power gained from the Monarch and the Lords in the English Civil War of 1640-49. In other words, true power is vested in the directly elected MPs.

  • no, its a tradition! The gentleman of the blackrod summuns the commons to come to the lords. They slam the door in his face because the commons fought long and hard to get the level of power they have today but the Lords still remain more powerful (in theory) so they slam the door in his face as a symbol of their discontent.

  • wtf was that...surley thats not a tradition..but a mistake?!?

  • they arent a "bunch of fruitcakes", sure our traditions seem odd - but i am thankful tht we actually have tradiions tht have survived for centuries. PS:americans copy our traditions :P

  • wow this is so different than here in America, similar in some aspects with respect to the state of the union address, but its good to get a different view on other governemts

  • Yes but ours is so much more grand, historical, famous and just generally better. God Save the Queen.

  • Gee Angrywinds, your comment is a bit over the top! And I am an Irish Republican.

  • The American State of the Union Address is modeled after the Queen's Speech, but unlike Britain, where Her Majesty is the Head of State and the PM the Head of the Government, the President of the United States has the role of both and Congress is just a law making body. Unlike the Commoners, who cannot go past "The Bar" in the Lords' Chamber, all members of Congress sit together in the same chamber, the chamber of the people.

  • This is an old British tradition by which the House of Commons, as representatives of the people, assert their independence. The Gentlemen Usher of the Blackrod is the representative of the monarch, but he enters the House of Commons only by its consent.

  • It is an amazing custom and I actually think that our Tweede Kamer (our Lower House) should adopt this tradition.

  • @JohnPaulParks there's also a great tradition of Dennis Skinner poking fun at Black Rod.

  • good old english tradition

  • @FuckinCrazyEnglander don't you mean good old British tradition????????

  • Hello, I have a degree in British history, and am a British citizen. So I'm qualified enough to answer any of your questions I hope!

  • Hi , are there anyone from UK to ask .

    plz wite soon .

  • hey im from uk ask away

  • i didn't get this but, if he is making fun of the Queen he is booldy bitch.

GOD SAVE HER MAJESTY THE QUEEN

  • Not quite making fun of...he was asking if Helen Mirren was standing in for her. Helen Mirren plays Queen Elizabeth II in "The Queen"

  • Actually he was making fun of the Queen. Dennis Skinner is an MP that has been in favor of the outright abolition of the House of Lords, and the Queen, for years. He has made sarcastic comments, at the Queen, each opening of Parliment, for the past 10 years. One of his first smart remarks was "Tell the Queen to pay her taxes".

  • The major reason I watched the PMQ's was because of Dennish Skinner ^^

  • ...Actually I <3 Michael Martin.

  • Lutonduke, what is <3? Does that mean you don't like Michael Martin?

  • It's a heart emote <3

    =)

  • grand!

  • I like Mick Martin, myself.

  • This is so much cooler than the US government protocol. All the history involved is fascinating. So much more interesting than all those bumbling monkeys in the States.

  • And this Yank says,

    HEAR, HEAR!!

  • It wasn't the Speaker, it was Dennis Skinner.

  • Classic, hilarious!

  • Thw Speaker wondered if they had Helen Mirren on stand-by.

  • liked the helen mirren joke

  • i can't heear what they say. it sounds like "If you're not Helen Mirren all is done for" but im not sure. is that right?

  • "Do you have Helen Mirren on standby?"
