  • i dont like this version so much...i dont like how peppy it gets...the recording i listen to most of the time was a lot sadder...it all depends on the bands mood though...no two are alike

  • I LOVE THIS PERFORMANCE ~<3 Carleen

  • love this song, it paints a picture in your mind

  • So true... I was in NYC today and saw so many homeless drunks. So sad! The question is: Is our compassion and support for them simply enabling them or is it better to let them hit rock bottom and realize they can’t live this way or die? Statistics say that 73% who finally reach that conclusion recover but are we willing to sacrifice the other 27% who can’t? Hard question….

  • Is it just me or is that Pete Townsend in the background? =) What a great song this is!

  • Other than the censorship, it's good.

  • It's censored!

  • one of the first Grateful Dead songs that made me "get it" forcing me to listen to ONLY THEM for a hundred years

  • @musicizzzzzzzzzzzzzz I hear ya' - It's an incredible song...

  • @blarneyvenom yeah, sadly, i saw them BEFORE I 'got' them, and actually had first row seats. So, the show, to me, was not great, then. Six months later, became a deadhead. Wharf rat, and Me and my Uncle did it.

  • @musicizzzzzzzzzzzzzz I hear ya Bro - I have an Uncle like that too - who turned me on to some incredible music...

Thankfully we have so many live performances of the band to smoke one and drift back with...

    They are Eternal.

  • and on the cigarette........Mr. Pete Townshend

  • i have never seen anyone do aerobics to warf rat...but pete is doing a great instructional video...this is great...thanks for the posting...

  • First Dead song I learned to play on the guitar. Great tune.

  • can't get sick of this

  • One of those Grateful Dead tunes that are easy to identify with.

  • yea and phil is the coolest

  • jerry looks high as hell the way his jaws swinging and yea and pete shouldnt have been up their

  • One of the sweetest Wharf Rats I ever heard. Pete's trying too hard. I don't think he got it. He's just distracting. Jerry looked like he regretted putting Pete up there, at least for this song.

  • phils the coolest

  • wharf rat is the first dead song that i actually sat down and listened to the whole thing. i remember by the end that i had no idea what i had just listened to, but i got a glimpse of a new type of music. i knew there was a lot more to the dead than any other band i had ever heard. it takes a long time to understand this band, but it's worth it. there is no other band even in the same league. touching, powerful, welcoming- what other band does songs like this?

  • @boseffis amen dude. couldn't have said it better

  • wish i could get the entire show ...would love to know what the jam at the end ran into any one out there who could help?

  • @dosed1dosed1000 this is just a shot in the dark guess, but the riff jerry's playing the last few seconds sounds kinda like "around & around" to me...

  • pete is such a poser..

  • @Geoffzx3 Pete is pete and the dead would not have had on the stage with them if they did not respect him and his incredible talent.

  • i have to believe that pete had MOST probably never even heard this song before this vid was made, much less made any effort to learn it with the lack of realization that he may someday be offered the oppertunity to play it WITH the dead

not too shabby for some outside-my-sphere-of-influence-jam music, in petes defense.

needs a lesson in "interpretive dance" though.

  • The 169,999th person to view this!

  • After Jerry passed, and sincerely without real true bias if it can be given, were they still any good at all?

  • @cyberpunk72000 i think they were still good. in my mind they ceased to be the best band in the world at that moment, but they weren't as good toward the end, even when jerry was there.

  • Totally awesome. Townsend can say he played with the Dead. He didn't even have to cross the pond to do it. :P Too bad the jam was cut off at the end, though.

  • He looks like he's about to pass out, but he plays and sings this so intensely it's unbelievable.

  • Watch Jerry School Pete

  • Jerry sounds great considering how messed up he seems...watch what he keeps doing with his jaw

  • The mixolydian mode is the best thing since kepchup

  • jerry nods ... pete spins ... both fucked and groovin in their own way !

  • what the fxxk, this is great

  • No fancy light show, no elaborate set pieces, no bold fashion statements, just some dudes with their instruments......beautiful stuff.

  • did anyone else realize that is pete townshend not phil....

  • @cysinger Hey bro, Pete is playing a guitar, not the bass. Phis Lesh can be seen from the wide shots. Peace.

  • @TheRufus76 oops, PHIL

  • Jerry forgetting his lines, poor guy =[ i still love him and this song is still great.... R.i.p Jerry, there will never be another like u.

  • lmao pete is so funny in this

  • I wanna say I got this(still a dork with my tapes) to unfortunate n un savvy lol to even figure out ,have an mps player but only know how to download n sync lol this would be awesome to have this vid. to carry around,

  • The greatful dead helped the Who on there first tours of america. I think they used the dead's gear and townshend tripped too hard on Owsley's acid and wrote Tommy so there you have it.

  • this the best thing on youtube by far

  • @tomassirman yep! and look @ how many vids. I've seen lol

  • townshend makes me laugh. This historic, I love this

  • Better a Jerry head than none at all.

  • YYY

  • Saint or Sinner, how we choose to remember Jerry is on us

the RIPPLE he left resonates in my heart

for me its all about the love

so Saint Jerry it is .. at least for me :)

keep on keeping on, the music never stops

  • thinking of this song while fishing on the Pacific and watching those lazy waves slip past my line as I wait for a bite. Fishing and Jerry; Damn, what a ride!

  • Fer what it's worth, by the way, Jerry liked Pete very much as a friend. They both shared the dreams and disappointments of their era (the idea that music could pave the way for a better, freer, more enlightened world, and the crushing disappointment when they realized that it proably wasn't gonna happen). Fortunately, Pete managed to escape from his demons/habits and stay alive. Would that Jerry had found the same strength.

  • Notice how Jerry muffles the "Some other fucker's crime" verse because he knows he's being taped.

  • @jazzmanchgo Looks like he just forgot the lyric, but you could be right

  • @quadruplewide Yeah, could be -- he certainly did a lot of that in the latter days! -- but I think he usually sang that line with a lot of focus and intensity, so I wouldn't normally think of that as one that would be easily flubbed. On the other hand, after a long afternoon/evening of partying with Pete . . .

  • @jazzmanchgo . . . .AND the Dead used the Who's gear when they played the Great Pyramid in 1978. If I'm not mistaken, Keith Moon died on the very night they were playing there during a lunar eclipse.

  • @jazzmanchgo no - he forgot the words - too many drugs will do that to you

  • favorite dead song right here man

  • it just moved.. no not that.. my soul

  • is that pete townson from the who

  • @DEADHEAD71344 yeah my dad noticed that to he looks so outta place.

  • no wonder i woke today , just not right. rip jerry. aug9-2010

  • RIP

  • Pete is absolutely clueless as to what is going on here , (the whole Dead Thing) so he's just posing as usual.

I think Bob is trying to cue Pete in on what's coming next---you can see him telling Townshend the chords---all the while trying to fill in the gaps left by burned out Jerry..... It's understandable, since this tune has practically no real structure.... Jam in 'A'.....then go to 'G' for a while.... typical Dead--Pete should've realized he had no business here, and just got outta there.

  • @davidsonlou it goes from a to em

  • @SnorkyTheInept: I see Pete being Pete. The only jackass is Bobby, as usual, posing as Pretty Boy.

  • @SnorkyTheInept: I see Pete being Pete. The only jackass is Bobby, as usual, being Pretty Boy.

  • 4:07 - 4:17...WTF

  • send chills up my spine, gives me goosebumps...fµçking awesome. Miss Jerry so much.

  • Happy Birthday you Wharf Rat you.

  • Pete Townsend is a jackass. I want to smack the shit out of him for acting like that in the presence of his betters.

  • I would have to agree that Pete looks like he is itching to pick up the tempo so he can windmill.

  • Could Pete Townsend have been a bigger ass here? He's playing with the dead but carrying on like some showman... get lost, Pete.

  • looks like there was a lot of cocaine involved on this night - Pete is pretty obvious and so is Jerry - watch his mouth while he sings . An exceptional performance of warf rat - my all time favorite is onSkull and roses .

  • ? ...who's the guitarist standing behind to the rt of Jerry?

  • @ValterraBlue72 sure looks like Pete Townsend.

  • ten minute long songs rule, the most popular lady gaga song is 2 and a half minutes of her hopping around on stage with a prime cut steak glued to her face calling it fashion. and 40 million fans she has on facebook lol good thing songs like this exist or i might be in a bell tower somewhere

  • I am only beginning to appreciate the Bone Marrow Of This Music

    Inspiration

  • pete townsend?

  • Listen. What does drugs have to do with anything? It doesn't matter if I'm tripping face, nodding out, shitfaced drunk, stoned, rolling, spun, Kd out, sober...whatever. No matter what, the grateful deads music is beyond description. Nothing else can bring me to tears.

  • @opanasallday most illegal drug use is destructive to the individual (jerry can't remember the line: half of my life, i spent doing time for some other fucker's crime - the person who introduces me to marijuana is evil - i wasted 10 good years of my life - it doesn't work for me or 99% of people) and to the fabric of society - alcohol was illegal for a good reason too - it gets abused and it really has very little intrinsic value

  • @surfer987dog FUCK YOU ASSHOLE!!! People like you shouldn't be grateful dead fans. Be grateful u have the internet to hide behind cuz if I heard you say something that fucking ignorant and selfish in person I would punch your teeth down your FUCKING throat you punk! Its cocksuckers like you who don't know what the fuck they're talking about who are fucking everything up by putting everybody in jail, taking away all our rights and making more and more laws every day. Burn in hell motherfucker!!!!

  • @jjcaptaintrips420 Wow. Pretty angry there buddy. Get some sleep. I don't think drug users should be put in jail but I think a lot of homeless people are living on the street because they are addicts. Illegal drugs are addictive and don't have much if any intrinsic value.

  • @surfer987dog Its none of your fuckin business what drugs other people do or choices they make. Mind your own business. Cannabis is a wonderful thing. By the way if you've ever been to jail you know damn well that living on the street is paradise in comparison.

  • @jjcaptaintrips420 Cannabis was my downfall, twice now. Short-term memory loss. Wellbutrin saved me, three times now. Half of my life I spent doing time for some other's crime. The crime was when some other person introduced me to cannabis. That person was very smart, but what he did, to me, was wrong.

  • @surfer987dog That wellbutrin is alot more harmful than cannbis. Stop giving your money to big pharma.

  • @surfer987dog except weed

  • @vexnsiolence You want to be a lazy, good for nothing, member of society - then sure

  • @surfer987dog take a toke and chill

  • @surfer987dog to each his own. The person who got you high on weed is evil. Well I do not know them, but it sure seems like you are scapegoating them for your own shortcomings and problems.l'm sure that this person wasn't there for ten years making you smoke pot.

  • Thank tha Lord for the Grateful Dead!!

  • one of my daughters first words was jerry..:)

  • @dexter69925 dude Jerry was a Dopehead, he'd get locked in the basement with a bundle to go mad

  • Most rock stars are junkies. At least the good ones. Want to define the dead scene? Ain't about the drugs...all about the LOVE. (Wharf rats are sober deadheads btw.)

  • wish i had what it takes/always on the take

  • and i just noticed at 4.00 on. pete doesnt grok the whole dead/dance thing.

    the boy has no rythm.

  • i tried watching this vid with my eyes closed, and without seeing jerry singing, (as well as seeing the bands intractions with pete), this song doesnt have nearly as much impact, somehow.

  • Pete Townshend really added alot to this recording. Not.

  • about the drugs.

can you imagine what the dead would have played without em?

they are gonna take ya in the end, but look at the beauty that was given to the world at jerrys expense. he died for his music, if ya wanna look at it from that place.

    i do.

thanks jerry. wish ya could have beat that demon.

drugs suck at the end of the day.

  • @edslides1 it wasnt about the drugs my friend. after 30 years on the road we would all need a way to cope.

  • @zendishwasher2

jerry was 'coping' for how long?

jerry was 'coping' long before there wqas ever a 'problem'

    how old are you?

face it. the dead WERE a drug, and they ARE all the same. tobacco, pot, caffeine, power, nintendo, sex, pedohilia, whatever floats your boat. without the drugs, the Dead would have been, at best, a footnote in rock history.

the talent would have remained, but it would have went somewhere else.

thanks, guys. you left the world a beautiful thing.

  • i am so glad that i get it. thanks for posting the vid.

  • @ftsmoo

    8 eloquent words.

'i am so glad that i get it'

  • I know this sounds strange. But I've always wanted to have Jerry's hair and beard.

  • sing it with jerry's emotion then talk about forgettin lyrics

  • @fadinboy amen it dosent really matter if you know the lyrics anyway

  • I shed a tear...

  • The only band that mattered...

  • Jerry has the hula jaw going :). Gotta love that. We miss him !!!

  • jerry could shred with the best of em

  • im not sure if its the angle the camera keeps showing Pete at, but it looks like he keeps hiding behind Jerry....

  • Jerry is trying REALLY hard to ignore Pete's playin' while he's singing so he don't mess up the lyrics. Failed once. ;)

  • Got to love that 3rd guitarist, Pete Townsend. Would have loved to have been at this concert. The Dead brought there best to this one.

  • 4.30: Pete's acid kicks in

  • Drugs are bad. Unless you want to live fast and die young. Garcia was staying in a California drug rehabilitation facility when he died of a heart attack in August 1995, at age 53.

  • @surfer987dog I outlived him by 3 years.

  • I think lots of performers forget the words. The Dead was unique in that they did not control the music. Anybody was allowed to tape it. So you get the real live deal. You don't see that much anywhere else.

  • Jerry messes up 1 lyric...

So Say No To Drugs Kids! Shut the hell up. He's only beloved by millions & did what he loved for a living. Yeah, you shouldn't do herion & crack, but people are going to do what they want to do. Please save the anti-drug msg. for your next DARE meeting!

  • Jerry can't even remember the words. Don't do drugs kids!!

  • @surfer987dog Quite the contrary do as much as you can without doing too much!

  • @surfer987dog yeah I'm pretty sure we wouldn't be watching this right now had Jerry never done drugs.

  • @TheBackOfTheBoat thats right actually wed pry be watching him play live becuz hed still be alive

  • Neither would I if I never dd drugs..

  • @TheBackOfTheBoat

i kicked three days ago.. sick as a dog, but this song gets me through... i'm sorry that any one has done them, but if that what it took to get this, to be hearing this so deeply now... so be it. i will be on my feet again

  • @georgean13 well what kind of drugs did you kick? Cocaine, heroin- sure, you shouldn't do those (although I admit I've tried coke a couple times). But stuff like pot and the occasional heavy psychedelic like LSD or peyote- those are fine, and without a doubt, Grateful Dead wouldn't have the legendary status it does if it weren't for those drugs. It might not have even existed at all.

  • @georgean13 heroin? take like 20-40mg of Immodium AD, it'll help more than you would expect

  • @TheBackOfTheBoat no dig whatsoever, but if Jerry had lead a clean life his music would've melted your face off yer head like the sight of God, as it is he still managed that feat (minus the ark of the covenant side effect)

  • @TheBackOfTheBoat What's the deal with all their keyboard players? Offt...

  • @TheBackOfTheBoat why do you say that?

  • @TheBackOfTheBoat ... im damn sure i would. he was born with that soul. drugs may have made it more passionate and sad which we can relate to, but that care and hope for good was straight up pure soul. fuck the drugs

  • Anyone know who the heck is on the third guitar? Woah, is this a first?

  • @ihventura

    pete townsend

  • i wonder wat bob and pete are taikn about probily the note i let my little boy whos four watch and listen to the grate storys and adventures the dead narrate in the songs and i keep wondering wat bob and pete are talkn about deadhead for life i will turn fourty on halloween

  • i wonder wat bob and pete are taikn about probily the note i let my little boy whos four watch and listen to the grate storys and adventures the dead narrate in the songs and i keep wondering wat bob and pete are talkn about deadhead for life b fourty halloween

  • I'm sitting here grooving and suddenly think wait? What? Is that Pete Townsend behind Jerry? Oh the things I missed. :( Still, fabulous ride all round! So many more moments to (re) capture... thanks for posting! Anyone have my first show? Dillon Stadium 1974

  • @mightyconcorde Yep that's totally Pete Townsend!!! How crazy is that!

  • I don't know what is worse, the band or the druggies who follow them. I saw Jerry Garcia at the Stone and he blew a few licks, but the doped out crowd thought everything was soooooo fine. "Hey man," just my opinion. Want to see a Norcal boy who really can play, check out any Robben Ford.

  • @thebigleone I saw Robben Ford once when I was really young anI was very impressed.. While Ford has very exceptional technical ability, Garcia just really puts (whether on purpose or by accident) alot of emotion and pain behind his playing. Sometimes it comes out sloppy and I'm not a fan when he plays with distortion. it often sounds like he's just hitting whatever notes he can. but Jerry really was a pioneer and played in a way that most can only hope to emulate, and it can be really beautiful

  • @thebigleone the great thing about art is that two people can see or hear the exact same thing and have dramatically different reactions....

  • E P I C

  • Jerry with a little dance at the 9:00 min mark...

  • I LOVE THIS!

  • I LOVE THIS!

  • LOL Bob is giving PETE TOWNSHEND a guitar lesson!

  • I'll get up and fly away....

  • i have bowl named wharf rat and this video shows why..the dead are the best thing to come from this earth along with weed and twinkies

  • THAT INCLUDES THE WHORYOU.

  • JESUS CHRIST SO LOVES THE BOYS. AMEN

  • My son sits on my lap and we watch Grateful Dead on youtube. When it's time for dinner he says, "I want more Jerry". I tell him I do too.

  • @wayneindus ...and so the love continues...<3<3<3

  • @wayneindus you sir have lived a great life. I tell you as a 19 year old, that moment you just described is exactly what i want my life to be like

  • @wayneindus Cherry Garcia I hope.

  • @wayneindus smart kid!

  • @wayneindus that makes me happy/sad

  • @wayneindus that is grate good for you gerry lives on threw your son forever, forever

  • God I love this song.

  • Brilliant...!

  • lol Pete makes a good Bobby..

  • Pete looks like a lab rat trapped in a cage, with cigarettes. LOL.

  • I'm in Heaven.... Jerry, Pete, Wharf Rat....... Need I explain. RIP Jerry, Love You Man.

  • great tune!

    love the antics with townsend

    "....more than my wine"

  • the dude....transcends..... ;)

  • 6:45............get off your couch

  • @restinpeaceladymydog Hope he wouldn't a' done nothing diffrent. Path he took, took him where it did. Pretty good god damn good road he travelled. How 'bout you keep up your GOOD habits, soft drugs and good food, and die at ripe old boring age in a nursing home pissing and shitting your pants. Good advice fuck face. I'm gonna go shoot a speed ball and fuck a hooker in the ass without a rubber. Ask me once I'm dead, I wouldn't do nothin' different!

... you sound like a fucking idiot.

  • is that brent with the really sharp sounding voice ??

  • holy crap... pete townshend hahaha..... what a great tune

  • @kansas jack.....Right Fuckin' On! Do her again for me!

  • i like some dead songs but never considered myself a "DEADHEAD".but after finally hearing this gem i consider myself a official HEAD ! i saw the deads last show with Jerry at the old spectrum here in Philly in 94',it was magical!!

  • This is the peak for me, Dead won me over on songs like this, Althea, Sugaree, Stella Blue. But right here, this particular 10 minutes, out of all the tapes I've ever collected, keeps me coming back. Love it.
