i dont like this version so much...i dont like how peppy it gets...the recording i listen to most of the time was a lot sadder...it all depends on the bands mood though...no two are alike
So true... I was in NYC today and saw so many homeless drunks. So sad! The question is: Is our compassion and support for them simply enabling them or is it better to let them hit rock bottom and realize they can’t live this way or die? Statistics say that 73% who finally reach that conclusion recover but are we willing to sacrifice the other 27% who can’t? Hard question….
@blarneyvenom yeah, sadly, i saw them BEFORE I 'got' them, and actually had first row seats. So, the show, to me, was not great, then. Six months later, became a deadhead. Wharf rat, and Me and my Uncle did it.
One of the sweetest Wharf Rats I ever heard. Pete's trying too hard. I don't think he got it. He's just distracting. Jerry looked like he regretted putting Pete up there, at least for this song.
wharf rat is the first dead song that i actually sat down and listened to the whole thing. i remember by the end that i had no idea what i had just listened to, but i got a glimpse of a new type of music. i knew there was a lot more to the dead than any other band i had ever heard. it takes a long time to understand this band, but it's worth it. there is no other band even in the same league. touching, powerful, welcoming- what other band does songs like this?
@dosed1dosed1000 this is just a shot in the dark guess, but the riff jerry's playing the last few seconds sounds kinda like "around & around" to me...
i have to believe that pete had MOST probably never even heard this song before this vid was made, much less made any effort to learn it with the lack of realization that he may someday be offered the oppertunity to play it WITH the dead
not too shabby for some outside-my-sphere-of-influence-jam music, in petes defense.
@cyberpunk72000 i think they were still good. in my mind they ceased to be the best band in the world at that moment, but they weren't as good toward the end, even when jerry was there.
Totally awesome. Townsend can say he played with the Dead. He didn't even have to cross the pond to do it. :P Too bad the jam was cut off at the end, though.
If anyone out there has ever done a bunch of show you'd know that sometimes you forget/mess up a line or a riff, you just keep going. @Surfer987dog- cannabis isn't addictive but if you don't want to consume the herb or drink alcohol that's cool, others do. Remember the Christian missionary's didn't like people surfing.
I wanna say I got this(still a dork with my tapes) to unfortunate n un savvy lol to even figure out ,have an mps player but only know how to download n sync lol this would be awesome to have this vid. to carry around,
The greatful dead helped the Who on there first tours of america. I think they used the dead's gear and townshend tripped too hard on Owsley's acid and wrote Tommy so there you have it.
@zed0469 AND the Dead used the Who's gear when they played the Great Pyramid in 1978. If I'm not mistaken, Keith Moon died on the very night they were playing there during a lunar eclipse.
thinking of this song while fishing on the Pacific and watching those lazy waves slip past my line as I wait for a bite. Fishing and Jerry; Damn, what a ride!
Fer what it's worth, by the way, Jerry liked Pete very much as a friend. They both shared the dreams and disappointments of their era (the idea that music could pave the way for a better, freer, more enlightened world, and the crushing disappointment when they realized that it proably wasn't gonna happen). Fortunately, Pete managed to escape from his demons/habits and stay alive. Would that Jerry had found the same strength.
@quadruplewide Yeah, could be -- he certainly did a lot of that in the latter days! -- but I think he usually sang that line with a lot of focus and intensity, so I wouldn't normally think of that as one that would be easily flubbed. On the other hand, after a long afternoon/evening of partying with Pete . . .
@jazzmanchgo . . . .AND the Dead used the Who's gear when they played the Great Pyramid in 1978. If I'm not mistaken, Keith Moon died on the very night they were playing there during a lunar eclipse.
Pete is absolutely clueless as to what is going on here , (the whole Dead Thing) so he's just posing as usual.
I think Bob is trying to cue Pete in on what's coming next---you can see him telling Townshend the chords---all the while trying to fill in the gaps left by burned out Jerry..... It's understandable, since this tune has practically no real structure.... Jam in 'A'.....then go to 'G' for a while.... typical Dead--Pete should've realized he had no business here, and just got outta there.
looks like there was a lot of cocaine involved on this night - Pete is pretty obvious and so is Jerry - watch his mouth while he sings . An exceptional performance of warf rat - my all time favorite is onSkull and roses .

jerry was 'coping' long before there wqas ever a 'problem'
how old are you?
face it. the dead WERE a drug, and they ARE all the same. tobacco, pot, caffeine, power, nintendo, sex, pedohilia, whatever floats your boat. without the drugs, the Dead would have been, at best, a footnote in rock history.
the talent would have remained, but it would have went somewhere else.
thanks, guys. you left the world a beautiful thing.
Drugs are bad. Unless you want to live fast and die young. Garcia was staying in a California drug rehabilitation facility when he died of a heart attack in August 1995, at age 53.
I think lots of performers forget the words. The Dead was unique in that they did not control the music. Anybody was allowed to tape it. So you get the real live deal. You don't see that much anywhere else.
So Say No To Drugs Kids! Shut the hell up. He's only beloved by millions & did what he loved for a living. Yeah, you shouldn't do herion & crack, but people are going to do what they want to do. Please save the anti-drug msg. for your next DARE meeting!
i kicked three days ago.. sick as a dog, but this song gets me through... i'm sorry that any one has done them, but if that what it took to get this, to be hearing this so deeply now... so be it. i will be on my feet again
@georgean13 well what kind of drugs did you kick? Cocaine, heroin- sure, you shouldn't do those (although I admit I've tried coke a couple times). But stuff like pot and the occasional heavy psychedelic like LSD or peyote- those are fine, and without a doubt, Grateful Dead wouldn't have the legendary status it does if it weren't for those drugs. It might not have even existed at all.
@TheBackOfTheBoat no dig whatsoever, but if Jerry had lead a clean life his music would've melted your face off yer head like the sight of God, as it is he still managed that feat (minus the ark of the covenant side effect)
@TheBackOfTheBoat ... im damn sure i would. he was born with that soul. drugs may have made it more passionate and sad which we can relate to, but that care and hope for good was straight up pure soul. fuck the drugs
i wonder wat bob and pete are taikn about probily the note i let my little boy whos four watch and listen to the grate storys and adventures the dead narrate in the songs and i keep wondering wat bob and pete are talkn about deadhead for life i will turn fourty on halloween

I'm sitting here grooving and suddenly think wait? What? Is that Pete Townsend behind Jerry? Oh the things I missed. :( Still, fabulous ride all round! So many more moments to (re) capture... thanks for posting! Anyone have my first show? Dillon Stadium 1974
I don't know what is worse, the band or the druggies who follow them. I saw Jerry Garcia at the Stone and he blew a few licks, but the doped out crowd thought everything was soooooo fine. "Hey man," just my opinion. Want to see a Norcal boy who really can play, check out any Robben Ford.
@thebigleone I saw Robben Ford once when I was really young anI was very impressed.. While Ford has very exceptional technical ability, Garcia just really puts (whether on purpose or by accident) alot of emotion and pain behind his playing. Sometimes it comes out sloppy and I'm not a fan when he plays with distortion. it often sounds like he's just hitting whatever notes he can. but Jerry really was a pioneer and played in a way that most can only hope to emulate, and it can be really beautiful
@restinpeaceladymydog Hope he wouldn't a' done nothing diffrent. Path he took, took him where it did. Pretty good god damn good road he travelled. How 'bout you keep up your GOOD habits, soft drugs and good food, and die at ripe old boring age in a nursing home pissing and shitting your pants. Good advice fuck face. I'm gonna go shoot a speed ball and fuck a hooker in the ass without a rubber. Ask me once I'm dead, I wouldn't do nothin' different!
i like some dead songs but never considered myself a "DEADHEAD".but after finally hearing this gem i consider myself a official HEAD ! i saw the deads last show with Jerry at the old spectrum here in Philly in 94',it was magical!!
This is the peak for me, Dead won me over on songs like this, Althea, Sugaree, Stella Blue. But right here, this particular 10 minutes, out of all the tapes I've ever collected, keeps me coming back. Love it.
i dont like this version so much...i dont like how peppy it gets...the recording i listen to most of the time was a lot sadder...it all depends on the bands mood though...no two are alike

im not sure if its the angle the camera keeps showing Pete at, but it looks like he keeps hiding behind Jerry....
Mtdeadhead312 8 months ago
Jerry is trying REALLY hard to ignore Pete's playin' while he's singing so he don't mess up the lyrics. Failed once. ;)

Got to love that 3rd guitarist, Pete Townsend. Would have loved to have been at this concert. The Dead brought there best to this one.

Drugs are bad. Unless you want to live fast and die young. Garcia was staying in a California drug rehabilitation facility when he died of a heart attack in August 1995, at age 53.
surfer987dog 8 months ago
@surfer987dog I outlived him by 3 years.
albatross7677 8 months ago
I think lots of performers forget the words. The Dead was unique in that they did not control the music. Anybody was allowed to tape it. So you get the real live deal. You don't see that much anywhere else.

Jerry messes up 1 lyric...
So Say No To Drugs Kids! Shut the hell up. He's only beloved by millions & did what he loved for a living. Yeah, you shouldn't do herion & crack, but people are going to do what they want to do. Please save the anti-drug msg. for your next DARE meeting!
kyndman007media 8 months ago
Jerry can't even remember the words. Don't do drugs kids!!

@surfer987dog Quite the contrary do as much as you can without doing too much!

@surfer987dog yeah I'm pretty sure we wouldn't be watching this right now had Jerry never done drugs.

i kicked three days ago.. sick as a dog, but this song gets me through... i'm sorry that any one has done them, but if that what it took to get this, to be hearing this so deeply now... so be it. i will be on my feet again
georgean13 6 months ago 2
@georgean13 well what kind of drugs did you kick? Cocaine, heroin- sure, you shouldn't do those (although I admit I've tried coke a couple times). But stuff like pot and the occasional heavy psychedelic like LSD or peyote- those are fine, and without a doubt, Grateful Dead wouldn't have the legendary status it does if it weren't for those drugs. It might not have even existed at all.
TheBackOfTheBoat 6 months ago
@georgean13 heroin? take like 20-40mg of Immodium AD, it'll help more than you would expect
MarvinMonroe 6 months ago
@TheBackOfTheBoat no dig whatsoever, but if Jerry had lead a clean life his music would've melted your face off yer head like the sight of God, as it is he still managed that feat (minus the ark of the covenant side effect)

amysue3076 4 months ago
@TheBackOfTheBoat why do you say that?
surfer987dog 4 months ago
@TheBackOfTheBoat ... im damn sure i would. he was born with that soul. drugs may have made it more passionate and sad which we can relate to, but that care and hope for good was straight up pure soul. fuck the drugs

I don't know what is worse, the band or the druggies who follow them. I saw Jerry Garcia at the Stone and he blew a few licks, but the doped out crowd thought everything was soooooo fine. "Hey man," just my opinion. Want to see a Norcal boy who really can play, check out any Robben Ford.
thebigleone 9 months ago
@thebigleone I saw Robben Ford once when I was really young anI was very impressed.. While Ford has very exceptional technical ability, Garcia just really puts (whether on purpose or by accident) alot of emotion and pain behind his playing. Sometimes it comes out sloppy and I'm not a fan when he plays with distortion. it often sounds like he's just hitting whatever notes he can. but Jerry really was a pioneer and played in a way that most can only hope to emulate, and it can be really beautiful

@thebigleone the great thing about art is that two people can see or hear the exact same thing and have dramatically different reactions....

Ask me once I'm dead, I wouldn't do nothin' different!

i like some dead songs but never considered myself a "DEADHEAD".but after finally hearing this gem i consider myself a official HEAD ! i saw the deads last show with Jerry at the old spectrum here in Philly in 94',it was magical!!
lowgeemudbone 1 year ago
This is the peak for me, Dead won me over on songs like this, Althea, Sugaree, Stella Blue. But right here, this particular 10 minutes, out of all the tapes I've ever collected, keeps me coming back. Love it.
