I saw the musical Chess twice in London in 1986 with Tommy Korberg and Elaine Paige. Amazing!!! We left the theater floating as it was perfection!!! I agree with BobsArtGallery, the female singer is not the best.

Speaking of good and bad, check out the Rongedal twins performing "anthem" in "Så ska det låta" ...not half bad for a pair of happy 'amateurs' ...especially not considering how well they do AC/DC's - "Highway to hell" or David Bowie's - "Life on Mars" O_o
Josh Groban should stay away from Chess...his voice just doesnt fit this great musical. His version of one of the greatest songs ever written, Anthem, is just as horrible as the woman singing here.

Problem is, you're comparing a live performance with the orchestra right next to the singers to a recording you heard that was cleanly done and probably had multiple takes of every song. No one sounds perfect in real life, and few singers can match the pristine sounds on a cast album.

I have to stand to defend her. i know her. He is AMAZING and the reason they cast her: she can make you cry in yentl for example..singing that on that stage was just a bit too much too early for her. And they probably payed her crap..So let's not blame her..i'm sure some of the critics can't even sing half as well as her..
You know Dominique Blazek? I don't think I'll criticize her singing - but I'm just saying that Svetlana's role is a very demanding and fierce woman - after all, her husband has rejected her and she finds herself to be a pawn in a love triangle. Especially in this song, "Endgame" is supposed to showcase Svetlana's vocal talents, as well as The Russian's vocal range... I think this role was just a bit too difficult for her at her age... But that's awesome that you know her!
I'm completely in love with Chess, the music is awesome and the story is quite good as well. Wish they played it in Stockholm since I never saw it when they played it there around 2002-03 - have seen it on dvd though and it's absolutely splendid!

Barbara Dickson was in the original cast album but not the original London cast. The role of Svetlana was played by Siobhan McCarthy at the Prince Edward Theatre.

Why is the argumentation always such that "you are not allowed to chritise if you can´t do better yourself"? It has no logic, since the performes are PAYED to perform the songs with satisfying quality(which of course is a very vague term).Just because someone does not like them, it does not mean that he or she is obliged to perform better

The original was accompanied by the London Symphony Orchestra and was it the Ambrosian Singers? So this is a pretty good rendition with other singers and musicians.
She sounded fine. It's easy to try an compare her with Elaine Page. He sounds almost exactly like he does on the original recording.
This is a nice version of this song, his voice is crazy! I do like the Gothenburg concert version from 1994 better though. Look for it, worth getting!

The real star of Chess was Tommy Korberg. His singing of Anthem is/was the show's highlight, not One Night In Bangkok nor I Know Him So Well.

I have to stand to defend her. i know her. He is AMAZING and the reason they cast her: she can make you cry in yentl for example..singing that on that stage was just a bit too much too early for her. And they probably payed her crap..So let's not blame her..i'm sure some of the critics can't even sing half as well as her..

You know Dominique Blazek? I don't think I'll criticize her singing - but I'm just saying that Svetlana's role is a very demanding and fierce woman - after all, her husband has rejected her and she finds herself to be a pawn in a love triangle. Especially in this song, "Endgame" is supposed to showcase Svetlana's vocal talents, as well as The Russian's vocal range... I think this role was just a bit too difficult for her at her age... But that's awesome that you know her!

I have to agree that the female vocalist is weak. In the original production, Elaine Paige was also involved in the "LIAR/NEVER" exchanges.

I'm completely in love with Chess, the music is awesome and the story is quite good as well. Wish they played it in Stockholm since I never saw it when they played it there around 2002-03 - have seen it on dvd though and it's absolutely splendid!

Fantastic to see clips of "Chess". I never knew it had been recorded. It was too good for the world when it first came out but should be brought back. The music is extrememly demanding and needs top quality singers. Tommy, Elaine and Barbara were amazing in London.

I totally agree with you; I saw it in London and it was great; I also attended the concert, before the musical started; in AMsterdam; amazing; I thought the falling of the iron curtain at that time had to do a lot with the declining interest in this great musical; for me historical in all ways; although the woman is not singing so well..elaine page is sooo much better!!

Barbara Dickson was in the original cast album but not the original London cast. The role of Svetlana was played by Siobhan McCarthy at the Prince Edward Theatre.

Thank you all so much for these clips of "Chess". I never knew it had been recorded. It was too good for the world when it first came out but should come back. The music is exremely demanding and needs very competent singers. Tommy, Elaine and Barbara were fantastic.

chess should be re-start again - but in russian language because there it would be a hudge hit musical. the musical contents the soul of russia with its melodic music.
russia will be the market in the future for such music projects.

I haven't heard any good female sing this song yet. I think they sound crap. Maybe It's just because of me comparing them to Körberg :)

This has been my favorite musical I've never seen(or seen:)since 1986 when I performed Florence's songs while in college for theater performance.Comparing this to the original cast recording, TK sounds fantastic!Is this the original Svetlana?Her voice sounds very similar, but like she hasn't warmed up(?); there is no depth or richness to her voice and she does hit some way off notes.Just an observation.I wish I could get to London to see it in May when Josh Groban is singing the Russian!!

Why is the argumentation always such that "you are not allowed to chritise if you can´t do better yourself"? It has no logic, since the performes are PAYED to perform the songs with satisfying quality(which of course is a very vague term).Just because someone does not like them, it does not mean that he or she is obliged to perform better

Does Dominique give an all-star performance? Not particularly, though it's pretty decent.
However, 'pretty decent' sounds substandard when you're performing opposite 'created the freaking role and still kicking its arse 15-20 years later', known here as Tommy Korberg.

Hahah. :D Josefin isn't completely horrible, at least in my opinion. Of course, there are lots and lots of better singers in Sweden, but she's somewhat tolerable. This woman, however... nope.

The original was accompanied by the London Symphony Orchestra and was it the Ambrosian Singers? So this is a pretty good rendition with other singers and musicians.
She sounded fine. It's easy to try an compare her with Elaine Page. He sounds almost exactly like he does on the original recording.

Given the tempo the conductor set, she didn't do half bad on the song.
Though there were a couple parts where she should have come down the octave and belted as opposed to going to the rafters and squeaking.
But singing with Tommy, any minor mistake's just going to stand out because he's not making any to compensate.

This is a nice version of this song, his voice is crazy! I do like the Gothenburg concert version from 1994 better though. Look for it, worth getting!
