can someone tell me why the propane tank explodes? you would think the bullet would simply puncture the outside releasing all the pressure inside. why does it explode?
@ThePustr117 the bullets are inciendiary (they have some chemicals on them that makes it burn as it exists the barrel) so when it hits the tank it ignites the gas
@BoredLikeHelI Ive shot a 44magnum into a small tank before and it had touble geting through one side, and never made it out the other. and thats not a pussy handgun haha.
@TheeVandal me and my friends shot a .357 magnum and some .45-70 gov. into some propane tanks and they all made it through the first layer easily....of course .45-70 is a rifle round and the tanks blew up because we kept open flames next to them but you get the point
and it all comes down to bullet choice also....you probably shot a human/hunting round but if you used armor piercing of FMJ you wouldve had more penetration
@TheeVandal yeah i get your point. what i dislike about mythbusters is that if THEY cant do it, its IMPOSSIBLE. i mean its totally probable that a guy shooting a normal .357 magnum FMJ (for example because thats what i know) at a propane tank would make it explode (sparks, penetration) but it is totally overused and exaggerated in movies though
@TheeVandal fullmetaljacket.....imagine a hollow point round but without the hollow point and completelly covered in a coppered jacket.....alot more penetration than a normal round but at the cost of less expansion
well, FPSRussia blew up a propane tank with a 5,56 bullet... and what if the propane tank that were in the 007 movie was custom made and was really thin (i know it's far fetched but it's possible, mythbusters failed again)
@stickstriker Well that would probably be because tracers/incendiaries are illegal and highly controlled. Also highly visible and traceable. Not something James would ever use. This was a last ditch effort to destroy as they do in every single episode where they cant destroy something by the myth.
3000 rounds per minute isn't even that fast considering the weapon type. That's barely twice what your run of the mill MAC-11 shoots. The GSh-6-23, for example shoots around 10,000 rounds per minute. The Metal Storm shoots at roughly 1,000,000 rounds per minute, but of course it only holds around 180 rounds. On a more reasonable scale, the Dread Weapon System does a solid 120,000 rounds per minute.
I think a 9 mm bullet with low uranium (having wasted its radioactivity) could penetrate the gas tanks at least, and make a better spark to blow the tank.
Now please imagine what happens when you put a 20mm automatic cannon in that position, firing at the same 600rpm faster than the M134 minigun. M61 Vulcan ftw!
Team Fortress 2 reference. The Heavy uses a Minigun. In " Meet the Heavy trailer " que talks about the minigun, and exlpains how many bullets does it fire. It is not a real number, it is just from the game.
since when mini gun shots 15 round per sec thats 900 round in one min ??? More like 3600 round per min or 60 rounds per sec even an mg42 from ww 2 shoot 1200 per min -.-
It is not only about the incendiary power of the bullet, there is also spark power of some steel or armor piercing rounds. Copper and lead are very poor spark producers. Before going all the way to incendiary rounds they should have explored rounds that are more "sparky". I am sure there must be some 9mm round out there that goes through a propane tank and also gives spark when it hits in which case it is boom.
I can do that with a single surplus 7.62 x 54R API round fired from my WWI bolt-action Mosin-Nagant rifle. Even including the $76 I paid for the gun, it's still cheaper than the minigun, which should be saved for more fun things..
Mythbusters claim to be so "green", and so "clean", yet through out their show, up until the very last episode they've burned more gasoline and other toxic materials, created tons of black pollutant smoke.. its all buisneness.. global warming has been proven to be a complete al gore FRAUD!
I think these people have too much time and way too much money IF they think that this is useful / educational or even entertaining (well maybe to teenage boys.)
The whole basis of this show is to test if completely fantastical situations from TV / films etc are possible.... ???
Gee whiz .... propane will explode if you rake the tank with a gatlin gun using incendiary rounds FFS!!! what a waste of time and money that could be used for some better purpose
@Stayontargetprod FMJ would only ignite the propane if it sparked on the metal or something. FMJ rounds don't make those mini explosions like MW2 implies. FMJ is just a metal jacket over the lead core of a bullet. It's not explosive or anything, it just helps with penetration.
