  • god, I can't get this song out of my head

  • Achilles Last Wreck

  • rare rare rare

  • heroin is a hell of a drug

  • Damn, anyone who's played an entire concert and to play something like this as an encore is pretty impressive! I can see how his fingers want to move but Jimmy looks pretty fatigued.

  • @ung427 But this wasn't an encore, the encore's were Rock and Roll, Whole Lotta Love, and Communication Breakdown; and they were'nt played 'til after Stairway to Heaven.

  • I suspect that the quality of the recording is why this video is less than epic.

  • Jimmy Jimmy Jimmy, your still one of the most beautiful people I have ever laid my eyes upon.

  • Jimmy broke the string on 7:56

  • It hurts my heart to see Jimmy like this. Think I'll go watch a more recent video to celebrate a healthy, drug-free Pagey. We are all blessed that he beat this madness and is still with us!

  • the performance is fucking awsome, but the picture before you click on the video. Page looks like a zombie from the walking dead.

  • 4:55 Page has made it>!!>! wow...that was something>! he is soo out of his mind and genius in this video! His body is barely holding his soul.

  • he is sweating like crazy he is so thin also

  • Bonham and Jones carry Page through the 1st solo.

  • JImmy is dripping with sweat because he is loaded on boy (heroin). I should know, as a two year addict I sweat like a pig when I change a f***ing lightbulb. GIven that, this is one hell of a performance.

  • @lokezep yeah youre wright but the reasonjimmy page was so good is because of the drugs

  • WHo said heroin never worked for people?

  • I was there! My first rock concert, when I was all of 13 years old.. I remember the 2 hour delay due to technical problems, the huge video screens (first time at a major outside festival- just as well as they were like ants on the stage from where we were). I vividly recall the amazing laser violin bow sequence in Dazed and Confused, and of course Stairway- last of five encoures! They finally left the stage around 1 am. They don't do concerts like that any more...

  • I'm gonna be honest. I feel like I'm watching a StSanders video.

  • He just pushes the string out of his way and carries on. No expression of it! I would have been like @#&%$*# (ratchenfracken)!

  • The DVD version of this is really good and it is from a Knebworth show, the last tour they did as Zep. I was just out of high school and saw them in '77 tour amazing. Jimmy's style is what he terms loosely tight, he fumbles now and then but his playing is spontaneous and emotional. Drugs, really, who can relate to that era these days and hope to understand everyone was into something back then. Some did not survive it. Drugs have a place in music creation but they are a means to an end. ZoSo...

  • Robert happy birthday from Poland

  • no frizzy hair on these guys...wow..

  • Why no highlight of Bonham? The star of this song. :(

  • @Blues353 Bonham and JPJ....JPJ was the one constant in Led Zep, largely overlooked. he was the glue that held them together.

  • this song is just somthin else :o especially live!

  • thumps up if thaught that you would see Smiagol

  • Btw, this is the second night (11th August) Knebworth show, right? Gave it away when Percy said "I KNEW the way"... Robert's subtle way of telling everyone to up their game ;)

  • Yeah, I'll take the tweaked DVD version tbh.

Seriously though, I always feel like there's a lot of power missing from the live performances of Achilles. The studio track is my favourite song of all time and I think it has a lot to do with the guitar orchestra that Pagey slammed together; all those insane, crashing overdubs. Probably why the DVD version is my favourite "performance" of the song, despite it being tweaked and made up of composites of both Knebworth nights.

    Eh.

  • @Oblivionator your wrong on that dvd its just the 4th.

also in 77 This was played amazing

  • @kildare97 Ah yes, you are right about it being the 4th, could've sworn I remembered it mentioning the 11th on The Garden Tapes. Oh well.

You're also right regarding '77... but only on certain nights when the mood took them (see: LA Forum), from what I can gather off my bootlegs. I haven't listened to those in a while mind.

  • @Oblivionator listen to more in 77 Achilles was amazing

  • @Oblivionator The DVD version of "Achilles" is from the 4 August show. None of the guitar parts were editted. That said, there was a good dose of reverb added and the main guitar solo had delayed added. The live versions, I feel, were always entertaining because they were played so recklessly that you never knew if they'd fall apart.

  • @tjcoffey I agree with you on that...they were always dancing on the edge of a precipice with this one (Page used to have a quote like that about their way of operating in general). Jimmy just started a website that's pretty cool, where among other things, he cites an important event in his life for each day that you happen to be checking in. Sometimes it's predictable call, but sometimes not at all. Btw, check my site for some interesting music...

  • These guys are legends. I would have loved to have been there. Best band ever lived.

  • PAGE ! the greatest of all...

  • When i'm listening to this song i get the most unexplainable feelings, music is just amazing, and i just love these guys for bringing us genius music like this, my life would be nothing without people like this, yes this is a bad version but i find something strangely beautiful about it.

  • I would love to see a Van Halen or Ozzy Osbourne cover. I don't doubt the talent of the musicians but there aren't many people with the gift of Robert Plants epic voice.

  • @VanHalenLedZeppelin7 yeah his epic shitty voice

  • @juggalokilla222 what the fucks wrong with you? Plants one of the greatest rock vocalists of all time.

  • Listening carefully... did anyone notice JPJ is messing lots of notes? All comments blame Jimmy for this "strange" performance, but in my opinion it's not so. Bass line is sloppy. I adore them, each one of them, but that is what I hear.

  • @TheMsplin I agree i have always noticed John Paul Jones being quite sloppy in this performance of Achilles Last Stand but Jimmy really is not playing well i have to admit, i love the guy and he is a genius to come up with amazing stuff like this, but he was on heroin at this time and he had the flu at this paticular concert, it is not there best performance, but Led Zeppelin will always remain a favourite band of mine along with The Who

  • @Sludge9509 I agree too. Fortunately they also had lots of wonderful and amazing concerts :)

  • @TheMsplin Yes, both amazing bands.

  • Jimmy must have been sky high while playing this song

  • Credit to plant he is very professional,he once said when asked about the drug stuff, well someone has to pick up the mike and address the audience, suggesting that one of them i.e him had to stay sober, also i think this was not long after Plants accident when they had not played together ages, although i will say Page was unsackable,he could have gone on stage in whatever state,no one would have sacked him from the band.

  • @sysrq120 Ha ha the thought of Jimmy getting fired from Led Zeppelin is I don't know what to say. I think people miss the whole point on Led Zeppelin live. For me it's about leaving everything on the stage. You just don't complain about being privy to someone's confession, and that's what this is. If Jimmy had died on stage there would have been nothing left because he gave it away. I feel privileged just to see it. And Jimmy could do more on heroin or detoxing than most "Guitarist" do straight

  • @nellgwen48 I see what your saying but...poor old bonzo paid the ultimate price for the excesse's.Just an observation not a judgement.Folks can never really be judgemental on these things because if we had the dosh that goes with the fame we cant really say what we would do,or be like, although some do say the music industry and life style that goes with it can be fatal.IDK just my opinion.

  • @sysrq120 I agree with you as well. Because of the bad playing I'm mesmerized. For the first time I can look past the song and just hear four guys telling me their whole life story. I have HTWWW but now I want this whole thing. For me it's like Amadeus. I am the priest and Jimmy is Salieri. You don't get that with any other band. Other bands get up and play songs, LZ lives their life on stage. And it's that way when they are playing at the top of their game as well.

  • It is really sad that it was so clear that Zep's days were numbered, especially from this 2nd Kneb. 7:55 Page breaks a string 6:11 Percy sings I KNEW the way. At the end I was just like the guy from 9:26, heartbroken, almost exploding with tears that it is clear this is their last show. Knowing so much they will be leaving us. Clutching in desperation, trying to hold on to what I know from now on will be of no more. Not believing it could really end. There will never be another band like this...

  • @mikey7619 Yes the song did not start out well and he was looking at the bass player like "oh well" and damn sure Jimmy in his Heroin state of probably withdrawal was not helping. Gotta love em though. They are legends.

  • Don't complain about Jimmy's performance. If you tried to play having been addicted to heroin, probably you wouldn't even get onto the stage becouse of physical pain which accompanies this addiction. Jimmy as a heroin addict didn't care about focusing on playing as much as before. He thought of heroine instead of playing and heroine craving was thing he felt the most. This was the worst period and thank God he got over it - majority of addicts dies. Keep warm Jimmy! Sorry about my errors.

  • robert plant the king

  • dood, this concert was like 6 hours long

  • everyone hating on this performance saying its sloppy and the band is strung out. umm the band is drenched in sweat, this would be a concert, they're probably tired as fuck. give them a break, they're still better than everyone else. ever.

  • @arweninkashmir When I read a comment with "UMM" I know for a fact you do not know what you are talking about. Of all the recordings of this track NOTHING, and I repeat NOTHING compares to the live version at Hallenstadion in Zurich.

  • @arweninkashmir True they are still better than everyone else :D But I reallllly find Jimmy underwhelming in the knebworth videos I've seen. It's really evident when you come straight from listening to something from their 75 earls court concert :(

And truthfully, Robert wasn't in his top form here either.

THAT SAID- I love them, and I always will. They are incomparable!

  • @arweninkashmir OK, maybe they really were tired but they should've been sober enough to give a decent performance.

  • yeah page!!!the king!!!

  • mannnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn we get stuck with kanye west and shit its just not fair!!

  • yea page breaks his string at 7:57

  • 1:03 i lol`d

  • nah i can't watch that it's too depressing

  • this song is extremely long and difficult to play so anyone who complains about this performance or any other keep in mind you more than likely couldnt do better to save your lives. this is coming from a musician who has played it before

  • @swgurrl Yeah, but this version is plain sloppy even on the easy bits. This is a prime example of what happens when drugs and alcohol take a toll on the body. You gotta admit it's abit off..

  • wooh not the best perfomence iv ever heard of them lol but stiill gd

  • even heroin couldn't hold back jimmi. hahahaha.

    nah, i love the man

  • Wow, I have the DVD released in 2003 and they doctored the audio and video big time! It sounds good but after watching this it's obvious that the guitar was redubbed for the DVD.

  • Ummmm...................

  • When I saw Page/Plant live in 1998, Jimmy's playing was about 100x better than this. So happy to have seen him get his shit together and be back on top.

  • I think this song is an expression of pain after aspiring to great heights, achieving great heights, but being wounded grievously in the process. It's an incredibly difficult song, and a very difficult topic to address honestly as an artist. Some versions of this song are much better than others. But Jimmy always LIVED this song when he played it.

  • at 7:57 the high E string breaks and Jimmy keeps on with the song!!

  • @millerhighlife2112

This is so funny :D He's in his own fucking soup, sweated like a wild pig, thanks to heroin, and to top of that the string breaks...

Note that he needed to bend every note he played, after the string broke, because it instantly detunes guitar...

  • @millerhighlife2112

    and he is laughing!

    How eceally he went on?

  • Jimmy U're my Hero :-*

  • go to face book and check out ZEPPFEST 2011

  • What many comments miss here is the pure authenticity of this piece. the internal struggle the demons eating away at Page. The musical performane, Bonham 'keeps everyhing together' look at the overarching effect. It is probably the most authentic piece of live rock music ever seen.

  • This was my favorite song at this concert. I was just 14

  • Happy Mardi Gras 2011!

From Orpheus and Atlas' mighty arma virumque pre cano?

    How could they say NO?

    Ruff Ruff Ruff

Thor's melting pot of pre-lenten air at gunja~den.

  • Sloppy awesomness

  • the first thing i think about to attribute to pages "not as good" playing here.. is basicly hes covered with sweat causing his fingers to slip like mad and the sound of the recording.. sounds cool either way to me. better than i could ever do

  • he has terrible problems with string during this concert, during over the hills and far away he breaks it again xD

  • other guitarists would of stopped playing after a string break..but not the great jimmy page.. he made a 5 string sound golden lol

  • Stil sounds awesome

  • Knebworth 79' AKA The Jimmy Page Sweat Fest. Pagey is my role model but man heroin took over his life at this point

  • @LoCo4GuiTaR Is that what breaking a string feels like?

oh well. let's keep playing. virtuosity takes no talent whatsoever. it just flows as same as sweet and faraway distance.

  • love plant's face at 1:04 :)

  • Comment removed

  • Unfortuantely this is the back end of Zeppelin, when Plant can't reach those high notes anymore and Page is addicted to Heroin, not to mention the band was unprepared for Knebworth.

  • @dt089 Being unprepared, I don't agree with that sentiment. Just look to the 8/4/79 show. The band by-inlarge smoked. This performance from 8/11/79 suffers from string breaks, a bitchy PA, Page being off and the 2 channel stereo mix sucking. That said, they did the Copenhagen warm ups before Knebworth. Those warmup shows are both fairly fine with no disasters. It's pretty well understood 8/11/79 suffered more from Page's Heroin addiction and technical problems instead of preparation.

  • what heorin does to people...

  • Not one of Pages best performances lol

  • Im a big Zeppelin fan but that was a terrible Jimmy Page. I don't know if he was wasted or he had guitar probs. and he just went with it.

  • @megashegem This sounds terrible for a reason. Its a bootleg recording of their Knebworth august 4th performance and i dare say its a terrible bootleg. The soundboards from these shows that are used here are very bad and i know because i own both. Yes i agree this song is incredibly hard to play live. In fact page recorded over 10 guitar parts for this song! So to clarify this is not a professionally mixed recording its just a bad soundboard from a imo good show and good performance.

  • @TheLegendaryKnives I'm pretty sure this bootleg is from august 11th and they put the august 4th performance on the DVD.

  • @TheAncientmelody Yeah i meant the 11th. Bad gig for Zeppelin thats for sure. Your also right they didnt use anything at all from the 11th show for the dvd. The one on the dvd has extra guitar dubs to patch up mistakes. My advice check out the 2 Copenhagen warm up shows for Knebworth as they were recorded in the audience on excellent sound equipment.

  • @megashegem heroin... 77-79 was crap for him

  • check out teslafieds vidoe of govt mule doing this nye at the beacon....fantastic

  • yeah sorry but page sucks, but its amazing to solid bonham is through the whole thing. Im sure he was on shit to, best drummer ever!

  • my god......he made an absolute dogs dinner of one of my faveourite solos, think i'll stick to the album version:P

  • @bridgfordbill This is not the easiest song to play live. And Jimmy Page was obviously on drugs.

  • Happy Birthday Jimmy!!!

  • Happy Bithday Jimmy....You freak'en HOT Mess!

  • Ahhhhhhhha! Ahhhhhhhha!

    Ahhhhhhhha. Ahhhhhhhha.

    Ahhhhhhhha! Ahhhhhhhha!

    Ahhhhhhhha. Ahhhhhhhha.

  • EPIC

  • If you want to hear an honest good live album with the band playing great and not strung out, buy Made In Japan. Zep was great in the studio but live for whatever reason was not very good and rarely tight. At least nothing on youtube and the official live album The Song Remains the Same wasn't much better. I loved Led Zep but never liked them live too much.

  • @stagnate100 yeah it was probably the heroin

  • @BearReportsss i have never done heroin and broke a string! cut him some fuckin slack...not to mention who gives a rats ass......just because you sucked one cock and ate a hundred pussies, whats that make you? i'm tired of hearing fuckin old tired drug comments about this band.

  • I'm confused.. if you watch some other videos on here that seem to be of the exact same performance, you can see that it is clearly a different version. like they replayed the song or something. anyone know? i cant figure it out, am i being stupid somehow?

  • @pogopogopogo3 They played two Saturdays in a row using the same clothes, because the shows were going to be filmed. That's why you hear two different versions of the same song. Also, they played Ten Years Gone on the first Saturday show but not on the second.

  • @PRONET27 Oh so it was two days. I thought of that but I figured they would have changed clothes. Thanks!

  • Prog Rock on Heroin!!!

  • @jkoff76 oh geez not another fucking tired ass stupid comment about page and heroin. oh yup here's one jkoff76 gee thanks, gee howa bout him kicken it, and a rock legend who's still alive. not romantic enough asshole?

  • @dog1clear, alright Richard III, Shakespeare on heroin??

  • @jkoff76 now your talkin big guy.......lol

  • Bonham was on the shit too!!! ive read that when they were recording in through the out door that Page and Bonham were shooting up right there in the studio.

  • @Mr1979longhorn oh yea, they did it as their wives were having babies huh? probably shot up during christmas dinner too.

  • LOL, Jimmy looks like he lost 30 pounds playing that song.

What's up with the baggy clothes?

  • one of the most underrated led zep's song... omg this is VERY nice

  • I guess heroin makes you sweat a lot and play like shit.

  • Wake up, people.......you realize it hot and he is sweating like all get out....

Plus not ever preformance is exactly like a record studio enviroment..........

    Please........they are Rocknrolls fathers........

    Rock on

  • Page is the sloppiest guitarist ever, seen them at Tampa Stadium in May 1977 when the infamous riot happened. They totally sucked in concert, this was the opening song. They were playing candy store rock when it started raining. Zeppelin walked off stage then the concert promoter told the crowd the concert was canceled and a guy jumped on stage and was shoved off by a cop. About 50,000 plus ppl destroyed everything after that. Personally it was the worst concert I ever went to. Zeppelin SUCKS!

  • @MasterWitchDoctor I highly doubt you were there, Not only was Achilles not played that night as it was towards the end of the set in 77 and Candy Store Rock wasn't played at all. Fucking dumbass

  • @DavidVIIIcool I see you weren't there. Mike Pike, the guy I rode there with was holding up some flags and in the Tampa Tribune the next day his arm is on the front page holding his flags and there next to him is me. So look it up, I'm the blond kid on his left.

  • @MasterWitchDoctor yep. Huge element of "Emperors new clothes" here I think.....

  • @MasterWitchDoctor Eat a dick you cunt, too bad you never went to a Zep concert in the '69 - '75 period, would have eaten up any other half assed concerts you'd likely to have attended. Saying "Zeppelin SUCKS!" only shows you have a serious personal issue with them (I mean who in there right mind would actually believe such a thing? All bias and favouratism aside... they really are just that good), no one wants to hear you're bullshit experience in Tampa (doubt you were there -_-) so fuck off.

  • @jimmyzo3o truth hurt erager? name calling and profanity makes you look like a fool and a ne're do well. oh wait you are so please do us all a favor and put your computer under the back wheel of your vehicle and back over it. can you say ignore?

  • @MasterWitchDoctor Dude, I couldn't care less. I always ignore these comments (cos they're usually kids), but the fact is you are a blown out wrinkly old sour twat (seeing as you were old to enough to attend concerts in the 70's) and you are on the internet writing comments like zeppelin sucks.... what does that say about you? What a joke, life hasn't been good to you eh? Profanity makes me look like a fool? They're just words, words which are there to illustrate the real fools like you. Peace.

  • @MasterWitchDoctor And seriously...if you find ANY recorded proof of a concert where they OPENED with Achilles AND played Candy Store Rock, don't waste time arguing with me on Youtube. Get in touch with Empress Valley or one of the other big boot labels. You could probably get a good price for your (bullshit sour-ass fantasy) tape.

  • @MasterWitchDoctor This statement is so full of inaccuracies it's ridiculous...and it's obvious you're either lying or fried beyond memory. They played Tampa in in June, they never got to Achilles, and they never played Candy Store Rock live. EVER. And most Zep bootleg connoisseurs who are big fans but also severe critics feel that their performance in Tampa was very strong before it was cut off. The May-June thing is no biggie...but the other stuff really shows you up as a liar.

  • Hurts to watch this :"(

  • Page is horrible in this. It's embarrassing.

  • @deslock1 What are the features at play here. Bonham is as tight as ever. Page is on heroin. I honestly think this is one of the most honest and authentic performances of the rock genre ever seen. Yes its loose and a little messy. I believe that THIS IS PRECISELY WHAT MAKES THIS GREAT. Page is fighting his personal demons here. Some of us know what that means. con expressionairre.

  • it is as if God himself is playing the guitar

  • Jimmy Page is a musical monster !! here heroin addiction but great

  • i love the way they play live...you know...particularly page he plays kinda wrong and badly... but it sounds good....=)

  • 'killing it' Jimmy Page style

  • England in April and he's sweating like that??!! He looks like he's just been jogging in the tropics....lol

  • What a freaking mess lol........................

  • @Briansigs I would like to say to all! This is an awful soundboard from this night...The playing is not as bad as it sounds. On this it sounds like page is playing a fisher price guitar. Trust me i have hundreds of Zep bootlegs. For those who clame they know...what the Led Zeppelin dvd. Page is on fire! Anyway yes hard song is an understatement...page recorded over 10 guitar parts for this song. And again terrible sound quality on this

  • @Briansigs what mess are you talking about? fucking greatest guitarist of all time!!

  • putz que merdão este led... o pedal enluqueceu e as notas estão desconpassadas... muito ácido

  • Poor guy is a hot mess here.

  • @OCdodgerfan88 drug induced mess

  • its actually much easier to play music on heroin john73a is a lil bitch

  • @DeliciousBob how do you know ß have you tried? How does it feel?

  • I think I like them even more after this. Who cares if they were shitfaced?? They were rock stars, thats the point isn't it? Or am I missing something...

  • in 1979 they are officialy considered rock gods.

  • @Abe91195 actually in 1979 they were in decline as punk had taken over, in 77 they were gods

  • @Matthew9444 oh thats right

  • They really don't sound good here. Its too bad they were never really "tight" live. They wrote some amazing music!

If Zep could've put together those great complex songs with that "blues" swagger and improvisation live, they would've been absolutely untouchable.

  • Bonzo is Chuck Norris

    Page is Merlin

    J.P.Jones is The Architect

    Plant is Jesus

  • It's a little known fact, out of every 309,311 people there are at least 28 who don't know what music is. :(

  • WITH OR WITHOUT HEROIN..JIMMY IS THE BEST...

  • Thank you God for making Led Zeppelin!

  • Bonzo!!!

  • i play a little guitar and what jimmy's doing is insane

  • i have never seen another musician play so ripped on heroin besides layne staley...both greats!

  • Comment removed

  • j page catastrophe guitariste nul
