too bad the monty bassline cant be brought to a perfect state of purity , without the sample . it would be ridiculous . craziest bass line ever . classic .
heh , i also sampled this a while back , also ... almost every pete rock instrumental ever made...almost....even from the unreleased series like more soul brother beats / more petestrumentals . peace . straight pete rock-ism . on that other comment by s.i.o. i meant straighten it out .
Great remake on both bruh! Using what you have that's what it's all about! You nailed both of them tracks! I would have loved to see how your horns would have come out on the PR remake for Straighten It Out. I figure you could have pulled it off. The rest of it sounded so good! Limitations can make you really creative! Nice post! * * * * *'s!
oh my god. i'm freaking out right now (in the positive way).
i wanna become record producer (i'm a girl), and man, i wanna know more about all this stuff, MIDI language, MPCs, etc. i wanna start as soon as possible. i'm so in love with music and i just saw the first 20 seconds of your videos and i'm tripping.
does an MPC cost a lot? which music programs are the best? (and sorry for my bad english)
I don't know what kind of music you want to produce, but I can say that you don't have to have MPC to start making music. I started as a DJ, collecting breakbeats, so I got sampler. If I were you, I would start from inexpensive music instrument. Hip hop music recording started from really limited equipment. Many rap records in 80s' were made with just drum machine, turntable and mic.
i wanna produce in hip hop music. i started to create songs with Music Maker but it was only with pre-recorded loops in different categories, and we have to match the loops to create songs. to begin for real, i guess i have to start little and then i'll gain some experience.
I have the SP-404... anyway your tracks are alot smoother than Elhau's SP-404 horn/beat track. I am a straight Vinyl DJ & use the crap out of sample section(s). I have to get more N2 the percussion side.... good tracks though.
I love vinyls. I lived through so called the golden age of hip hop (late 80s' to late 90's). I used to buy a lot of records at that time... I like the sound of hip hop in early 90s'.
Yup (90's). Can't take 2 much of this NEW HipHop Rap stuff 2day, Vinyl getting scarce 2 ;-)! Keep it up dude... what ya doing is TODAY.... LOL I am trying to hold on the old stuff until I hve 2 fully convert! PEACE... and thk 4 reply back.
I also have a 2000xl. To be perfectly honest it feels like a step back compared to using the ES-1. With the ES-1 you can do all kinds of automation and filter sweeps, and complicated resampling etc..
BTW just heard the pete rock remake towards the end, Sounds good!!
I've been thinking about getting 2000XL. I could have bought 2000XL instead of Electribe, if price were lower. I heard that 2000's sequencer is great. Do you like your MPC?
You know the sequencer is nice and all. But very limited in its real time recording capabilities i.e. recording volume changes, automated panning, filter sweeps etc..The step editing is somewhat detailed, especially for editing MIDI data. I think the most redeeming qualities of the 2000XL is the 16 levels feature (great for basslines) and the cool pads. Thats about it.
IMHO the ES-1 is much more fun and straight forward to use!! (way more knobs to tweak too)
Thank you! but I don't think I can top the top the originals though. For my versions, horn is missing. I cannot ID the short horn sample used on "Gangsta B!tch." Does any one know?
I wanted to get a used MPC-2000XL or 1000, but they were not in my budget range (usually listed $500 or more.) With about same amount of money, you can buy Ableton Live, but I do prefer hardware sampler better... Electribe ES-1 is great for a (serious) hobbyist, like me.
I remember I've been looking for this baby the other day, but since there wasnt many videos with hip hop music I wasnt sure whether this machine is really for me.
You can find ES-1 around $150 on ebay. Compared to other competing samplers (like Bose SP-303), this is really good bargain on used market. ESX-1 is great, it has keyboard part, max of 8 length instead of 4. But I like ES-1's lo-fi sound and I don't really need keyboard part (although it is very useful)
Please check out my other video clips (Electribe ES-1 demos) also.
So far, one def person has watched this vid...jealous ass!

Hahaha..the little feat drums with the Monty Alexander vibes!! This is more along the lines of an Apache "Gangsta b*tch" remake!
Very nicely done though, I actually like your version a little bit better.

Yeah..Ive heard that same horn sample in other hiphop songs of the time (92-93), but I never figured out where it came from either.
Im still curious about that to tell you the truth!
