  • Is he using an eBow on this? Sometimes it looks like he's picking.

  • god dam that is great

  • if steve don't do anything about his weight he won't be able able to reach the guitar to play it!

  • What a beautiful melodic guitar solo.....!!!!! every single note is done to create emotions....simply beautiful......

  • man,,,I could just listen to this all day...each note like a delicately placed dab of colour on a blank canvas...

  • Can anybody please tell me, where the Repead Funktion is on that youtube web-side?

  • OMG, this is so f...ing beautiful!!! I get goose bumps all over. Everytime I hear this song, the tears get in my eyes when this solo starts.

  • Simple,yet so beautiful,wonderful & sweet.

  • Is this from a DVD?

  • Steve using e-bow ???

  • I love that song... The moment when Steve Hogarth sings "on the horizon" and Steve Rothery's solo after that are my favourite...

  • Only one problem with that solo... it end's too quickly, I want it to last foreeeeeeeverrrrrr!!!

  • YA ROCK THAT SQUIER! SHOW THE WORLD THAT U ARE NOT THE UNDERDOG!

  • Great, Great, Great....

  • GOOD GUITAR SOLO BUT NEVER LIKE FISH ERA SOLO`S I THINK WITHOUT FISH, STEVE ROTHERY ISN`T GUITAR FEELING LIKE BEFORE.

  • Gilmour has tattooed on his arm "Rothery is God" lol.

  • THE GOD OF GUITAR

  • great guitarist

  • There are a crapload of really good guitarists out there, but Steve Rothery is without a doubt one of the most EXPRESSIVE. This solo saves an otherwise mediocre song. (Except that you have to wait eleven and a half minutes to get to it).

  • gentle, amazing, pure tones...This man is one of my favourite guitarist!

  • gentle, amazing, pure tones...This man is one of my favourite guitarist!

  • This Strange Engine

  • Absolutely brilliant!!!

  • Absolutely beautiful.

  • Without a doubt one of the most beautiful and emotional guitar solos of all time. Steve doesn't play too much...just enough. It is so hard to find that because most players tend to get greedy and want to show off their talent. A good way to see that is how you always wish he'd play longer with you listen to a Rothery solo. Very nice post and thank you.

  • brilliant

  • christ he needs to drop a couple of tons, the fat bastard!

  • @gonlaz You're right, and, in between he did...but will it affect such a beautiful solo?

  • Magnificent solo - lovely sound - beautiful track, underrated album.

  • Come on guys.....he has got chubby hasn't he?

  • Looks simple, but it just amazing - King Steve

  • Maybe the best solo on this planet.

  • this is probably his best solo

at least from my point of view

  • @salahazzouz i think you should listen more of marillion when fish was with them, like "sugar mice" or "that time of the night" or the second part of the album "misplaced childhood" "jigsaw" or "incubus" from the fugazi album or one of their master pieces "grendel"

  • Along the likes of Gilmour & Hackett

  • This solo is so gorgeous...it's one of his best for sure! God bless Marillion....and I mean it!

  • Can anyone help me buy this - what marillion album is this track on?

  • It's the title track from "This Strange Engine."

  • Doh! so it is! Thankyou.

I Coudlnt find it in itunes but now found their website which seems to be where they sell their recent stuff from.

  • @chipfire Yaah this is the I am SOO Fat steve rothery ALbum! I miss FISH

  • Fish lost his voice but Rothery can still play the guitar

  • what a tone, definately the most unappreciated guitarist of our time

  • @SlimyTurnips Hes the fuckin man.

  • dude when did he get so big?

  • Anyone know which tour this is from?

Looks like it was from the TSE tour in 1997 to me.

    Awesome solo.

  • We love Steve Rothery.for me,.you are best guitarist in the world..

    Wim.from Srilanka

  • Amazingly simple yet beautiful playing.

Andy Latimer of Camel comes to mind. Just listen to ICE by CAMEL and you would love it.

  • I did just listen (for the first time ever) to ice by camel, that live rendition on tube...and was moved. it was really inspired. cheers

  • Glad you liked it. There are tens of other songs by CAMEL on Youtube that I am sure many would just love.

  • The guy is amazing!!!

  • The perfect balance between beauty and taste, a little in between Hackett and Gilmour, beautifully done!

  • SR rules. We love Steve Rothery. Holy fuck, what lovely sweet strains. Long live SR.

  • Such fluid lines - just like Hackett. First time I heard Rothery play, I knew he was one of the greats, in the tradition of Fripp, Hackett, Howe and Gilmour. Is that an Ibanez he's playing, or is that a Fernandes like what Hackett plays now?

  • I believe it's a Fender Strat with a Kahler trem system installed.

  • It's an old JQ Squire strat that came out in the early 80's.

It's got the Kahler and EMG pickups

  • BEEEYOOOTEEEFUL!!!

  • Yeah, beautiful playing. Peace.

  • Steve Rothery is GOD!

  • ..and most talk only about Gilmour, Clapton...sigh.

  • Agreed.

  • Too true

    So underrated :(

Oh well, we know he's fucking great :)

  • Love it when someone writes/plays all of the right notes and not one more than necessary. This is a masterpiece.

  • Cant stop listening to this!

    Steve Rothery !

  • he is the David Gilmour of our time.

  • He was then too.....30yrs now!

  • This is what is heard upon entrance to Valhalla...best solo ever to grace this earth....GOD BLESS STEVE ROTHERY

  • dont worry about the fat man. If he was thin his playing wouldnt change. thats just talent. enjoy.

  • True, and he's still writing fucking amazing songs.

  • does this beautiful music somehow force him to eat cheeseburgers or something. the guy is blowing up like a baloon. i love the cat, and worry about what he is doing.

  • That was a little on the mean side,

    but I also worry.

  • the best guitar solo on earth. or in the universe...

  • i can see you really feel the music its nice to see a emotional piece to be play like this nice work... very nice work.. btw i loved the lone thing ... it worked well ;)

  • There aren't many who can beat Steve Rothery for feel, soul & emotion. He has a knack for picking just the right notes - not too flashy. His sound is spot on & he plays with his heart. A guitar great who is No1 in my book.

  • thanks for this, Rothers is fn ace , what a way nto hear a guitar speak ....fantastic

  • Thank you fkappreciative

  • The perfect moment! Masterpiece.

  • Very Beautiful, god feeling

  • The man is a genius

  • IMPECABLE!

  • Totally agree!

I asume this solo is not difficult to play, but he got that melodic feeling in playing that guitar and so melodic.

    Jan/Sweden.

  • Steve Rothery is by far the best guitarplayer in the world. I dont know enough about technique to say he is the best in that respect - but he puts so much feeling in his guitar that it makes my skin crawl...

  • I agree!

  • Hi,

I like him too and his guitar makes me like marillion even more. For feeling - maybe more of the extatic kind - and a heck lot of technique you should check out "tender surrender" be Steve Vai.

  • Well, I ocasionally listen to Vai, Satriani, Slash, Knopfler, Steve Horn and Trevor Rabbin, Lukather, Gilmour - u name it - but I still believe Rothery puts more feeling in his solos and that he doesn't have to "show off" as Vai and Satriani does on every of albums. Their technique is probably better though. I wont argue on that. For an "insane" solo check out "Fernando Miyata"...

  • Tjecked it out... that's not feeling. It's porn :-(

  • hmm, I almost agree with you. For me he's the second best. David Gilmour (Pink Floyd) is the best for me. They both play from the heart.

  • @Stofferdrengen can't argue that!! His skill and emotive power combined maked him the very best there is!!

  • @Stofferdrengen

Steve's a fantastic guitar player - along with Steve Hackett and Dave Gilmour, he's in my top 4 of all time. But for sheer emotion, I'd rate Andy Latimer (Camel) even higher.

  • @Stofferdrengen he has a rly nice vibrato and bending, but in fact of speed, tapping, sweeping, he is not the best for sure... anyway I think he has his personality in fact of playing and his solos are rly pure feelings (thing that many shradders hasn't got)! he's a rly good guitar player ;)

  • what year was this filmed?

  • Very much a player from the less is more school and all the better for it IMO. I know he can do the really fast licks, but for me he has always exceeded in thrilling guitar work without the 'look at me ' effect. Great player, a lot of respect from me.

  • I like the strat that he used to play in the eighties with the mirror pickguard, as well as his doubleneck strat :-)

  • Very beautiful solo. Is that a Squire strat or a Blade? I trust the pick ups are EMG SA's.

  • no, I'm sorry but that's not even close, it's a fender 70's style with a dimarzio fast track or a seymour duncan miniJB in it (too hard to tell)

  • Steve's famous for playing a Squire loaded with EMGs and a Kahler

  • Nice solo Steve!! Truly a great guitarist, put him up there with anyone.

  • Excellent talented guy also he has a very sexy grin

  • He is still the best guitarist full stop!! Oh and btw I would still do rude stuff with him he is sooo special

  • Don't deny that he is a great guitarist. He has a unique sound and is one of the standouts.

  • Don't know about eheister, maybe you should change your name to sheister !

  • just looking out for his health.

  • Cant stop listening to this :-)

It makes me shivering every time!

  • it's wonderful !!!!! viva Rothery

  • So melodic!

  • Hey, I'll be seeing you there at Port Zelande, too! Though one thing Center Parcs at Port Zelande could stand from us Texans is a restaurant and food make-over.

  • @fkappreciative -- yes see you next year in Port Zealand in March. Greaaat!!!

  • lol @ youtuber comments.

Steve Rothery is god. Also he has lost a lot of weight since this but it is absolutely irrelevant, just listen to the music guys. Funny how jealousy manifests itself.

See you all in Port Zelande!

  • If sme of u r jus gonna come on hear and think "oh this looks lyke a gd guy to insult" and wast ur tyme ttyping up crap about mr rothers who i have great respect for. U cna sod off.

  • Steve is the best ! Magic fingers !

  • Brilliant brillant!

  • 2 Words: Marillion Weekend!

March 2009 in Port Zelande, Holland. Be there or be relegated to uninspired Yngwie Malmsteen land!

  • @fkappreciative FINALLY someone who doesn't worship freakin' Malmsteen! UUUUUGH

  • Watch and admire the genius! Emotional and brilliant, his best solo of them all.

  • This and Easter!

  • There are great guitarists out there, but noone that plays guitar not only with this fingers, but with his heart. King Rothers!

  • Do you have to be skinny to play the guitar this superbly? I don't think so. The most underrated band around by far.

  • Keith who?

  • ignorance!

  • Man, this is such an amazing solo. Watching it on a computer makes me want to close my eyes and just listen, I can't imagine how touched you are watching this live in person...

  • Steve's such a great guy. I was at the Marillion weekend in Feb. of 2007. I walking up the stairs to the merchandise room and I ran into Steve as he was walking down the stairs. Without stopping, he smiled, pointed his finger at me and said enthusiastically, "It's gonna be great!!" He was right.

  • Marillion simply at their best!!!!

  • It's true. The dude can play but he's way overweight.

  • he has tried

  • Classic Rothery.

  • Yeah, that Uncle Buck can play a hell of a guitar solo!

  • I didn't realise John Candy was a guitarist.

  • It's John Candy!
