There are a crapload of really good guitarists out there, but Steve Rothery is without a doubt one of the most EXPRESSIVE. This solo saves an otherwise mediocre song. (Except that you have to wait eleven and a half minutes to get to it).
Without a doubt one of the most beautiful and emotional guitar solos of all time. Steve doesn't play too much...just enough. It is so hard to find that because most players tend to get greedy and want to show off their talent. A good way to see that is how you always wish he'd play longer with you listen to a Rothery solo. Very nice post and thank you.
@salahazzouz i think you should listen more of marillion when fish was with them, like "sugar mice" or "that time of the night" or the second part of the album "misplaced childhood" "jigsaw" or "incubus" from the fugazi album or one of their master pieces "grendel"
Such fluid lines - just like Hackett. First time I heard Rothery play, I knew he was one of the greats, in the tradition of Fripp, Hackett, Howe and Gilmour. Is that an Ibanez he's playing, or is that a Fernandes like what Hackett plays now?
does this beautiful music somehow force him to eat cheeseburgers or something. the guy is blowing up like a baloon. i love the cat, and worry about what he is doing.
i can see you really feel the music its nice to see a emotional piece to be play like this nice work... very nice work.. btw i loved the lone thing ... it worked well ;)
There aren't many who can beat Steve Rothery for feel, soul & emotion. He has a knack for picking just the right notes - not too flashy. His sound is spot on & he plays with his heart. A guitar great who is No1 in my book.
Steve Rothery is by far the best guitarplayer in the world. I dont know enough about technique to say he is the best in that respect - but he puts so much feeling in his guitar that it makes my skin crawl...
I like him too and his guitar makes me like marillion even more. For feeling - maybe more of the extatic kind - and a heck lot of technique you should check out "tender surrender" be Steve Vai.
Well, I ocasionally listen to Vai, Satriani, Slash, Knopfler, Steve Horn and Trevor Rabbin, Lukather, Gilmour - u name it - but I still believe Rothery puts more feeling in his solos and that he doesn't have to "show off" as Vai and Satriani does on every of albums. Their technique is probably better though. I wont argue on that. For an "insane" solo check out "Fernando Miyata"...
Steve's a fantastic guitar player - along with Steve Hackett and Dave Gilmour, he's in my top 4 of all time. But for sheer emotion, I'd rate Andy Latimer (Camel) even higher.
@Stofferdrengen he has a rly nice vibrato and bending, but in fact of speed, tapping, sweeping, he is not the best for sure... anyway I think he has his personality in fact of playing and his solos are rly pure feelings (thing that many shradders hasn't got)! he's a rly good guitar player ;)
Very much a player from the less is more school and all the better for it IMO. I know he can do the really fast licks, but for me he has always exceeded in thrilling guitar work without the 'look at me ' effect. Great player, a lot of respect from me.
Hey, I'll be seeing you there at Port Zelande, too! Though one thing Center Parcs at Port Zelande could stand from us Texans is a restaurant and food make-over.
Steve Rothery is god. Also he has lost a lot of weight since this but it is absolutely irrelevant, just listen to the music guys. Funny how jealousy manifests itself.
