  • gotta love the hawaiian shirt

  • Both Awesome guitarists

  • im goin to chicago on saturday, im gonna be playin this the whole time im there haha

  • srv was sussposed to be in this...to bad he died :(

  • Forever in the root.

  • The bassist was stun! LOL

  • Man... a Blues Legend and a Modern Genius! What a great combination. I'm glad to see that the Blues is still ALIVE AND KICKIN'

  • @TheLespauladdict And we'll keep it alive. I'm 16 and, god, I wanna be a bluesman. Not the easiest quest, I'd say, down in Berlin, Germany, but damn me, I have blues ;)

  • bb king and buddy guy talking before this concert ...

buddy guy : hell king im gona let this young man dohes thing and then im gona show him how its done.. bb king : cmon buddy we cant let the kid look bad in front of audience just play solos bad or just sing buddy guy : ok but im gona show clapton next week !

  • @CletusColtrane- Apparently you misunderstood my comment. I was defending John Mayer as a Blues Man. I said nothing about Buddy Guy. I love Buddy Guy as well. Can you read; AND comprehend written words? I think not! Or are you just an argumentative, instigating, know it all? I love all Blues, and hold Buddy Guy and John Mayer in high esteem. Try phonics...lol

  • outstanding performance from both. mayer's tone is much much better. those two rocks & dumble are magical.

  • both amazing talents... the video of jimi hendrix in the front row watching buddy guy pretty much explains it all... john mayer is the same vein... just a douche bag generation... and it's my generation... age 25... he did what was popular just like jimi

  • find the video where mayer and slash are playing on utube...john blows him out of the weeds..slash wasnt even in key....

  • Only Buddy Guy could wear that hat and shirt and still look a bad ass

  • John Mayer is the top of the heap in Blues Guitar, and not just for his generation. I been playing and living the circuit for 35 yrs, and Buddy, Eric and John are. in my opinion "the best you get in Blues"

You get more soulful just standing next to these 3!

  • john mayer should play alot more music like this and play alot less pop music

  • It almost seems to be a passing of the torch from one legend to and up and coming legend in the making. I hope that 10, 20 years down the road that blues music is still prevalent.

  • People who post dumb comments of any sort on this video have absolutely NO understanding of the blues. At all. The blues isn't about competition between guitarists, "stealing licks", race, being a legend, comparisions of talent, or any of the other garbage you could think of to knock this. It's the MUSIC. It's the EMOTION. It's tellng a story that people can relate to not just by copying sounds, but in their hearts. This is the blues at it's best. Two dudes playing for fun and loving it.

  • @RosaParks312353

    Well said!

  • love Buddy Guy & I John Mayer after listening to him play w/Buddy. Never be like Buddy & Stevie, but they rock.

  • It's instantly ovbious who is more talented.

  • This is good but a white guy singing this is just wrong lol.

  • @Rushworshiper92 sorry but that was a stupid comment

  • @esbramakopf You may think it's stupid but it's true.

  • @Rushworshiper92 why do you separate black from white i thought people were quite over that? i mean its true that ok i think there are more good black musicians ever then white musicians, but no there is no deal between black and white now, everybody can sing the blues, clapton is a good example stevie ray vaughan aswell

  • @esbramakopf Im not racist or anything Im just saying that black people have a low tone vocal range and its very different from most white people. YES everyone can play the blues but when you are covering a Robert Johnson tune it's just not the same sung by a white guy. I wasn't trying to sound racist or anything.

  • @Rushworshiper92 ok man no problem haha i just misunderstood you :D

  • I don't really like John Mayers music, but only an idiot would say that he is not good at the guitar. He's got mad guitar skills..just don't like his type of music

  • @greiver15

He's good yes,.....but that's it......He's not the new SRV, he's not even in the same park. I think the problem is there are very few new young good guitar players, so when someone good, not great, like Mayer comes along, peoples hopes get up

  • @greiver15 an open minded opinion. one which deserves to be respected :)

  • John Mayer was privileged to be there doing that

  • Comment removed

  • Mayer stole a Buddy lick, ha ha!!

  • THE Blues men Think John Mayer is a "blues man" and he is great and THAT is good enough for me...LOVE IT!

  • @chesapeakepeg

Have you heard what the greats have said about him, I think not......Buddy is different than most, he'll play with anyone, anywhere, at anytime.......

  • amazing. one of the best versions i've ever heard. real chemistry between buddy and john...

  • I'm realising more and more that without Buddy Guy there would be no Jimmy Hendrix, no clapton, no Steevie Ray Vaughan, no Jeff beck, this guy is just the root of all the guys

    god

  • I can not say that John Mayer is in any way a bluesman. But he does know the guitar very well.

  • @Kynatics The man was born w/ the Blues !!

  • Awesome vid...hope he plays this April 10!!

  • P.S. to Pissintheyard, hey sorry I wrote "douche." I don't appreciate the names. I persused the comments, & noticed another referring to a woman as a bitch. C'mon guys. Please have some manners. I don't care what the popular vernacular is, we deserve better. I'm a classical pianist (not ancient) love all music & live for it. And so much more; a scholar, athlete, lover, survivor..so are all of your women: mothers, wives, sisters, daughters. Please get this together. Lets talk about the music.

  • Love IT.I'm a Chicago girl city proper born & raised on this music.Glad that Mayer brought some wicked blues to youngsters, hes incredible & has it goin' on, playin' now w/the greats w/respect. BTW, Buddy Guy is known for his showmanship.Pissinintheyard if this was "Taste of Chicago" (anyone?) been there & the crowd is SO Irish drunk & this a Chicago theme song expect rowdy. "Bitches," "punch their stupid faces?" Quick too I see douche, bet you get all the chicks. Please don't move to Chicago.

  • Why can't they play this music at my school dances :(

  • That SUPER-annoying "waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahh!!!!" that bitches constantly do for attention makes you want to do a "Jersey Shore" number on 'em -- punch their stupid faces.

  • Taste of what? My jock?

  • Wow!

John Mayer really can play the instrument despite what others say about him.

Music is organic and the best thing is, what comes out in the music is the soul of that person.

Let's learn from these players rather than diss them.

  • goose...bumps...damn.

  • Two amazing artists. Buddy Guy is a blues genius, John Mayer is a musician AND a performer. He sounds amazing LIVE, not lip-synched and can actually play the hell out of the guitar. I'm so glad people are still seeing shows like this, because with all the Miley Cyrus and Britney Spears stuff out there, it seems like it's becoming a lost art.

  • fuck yes

  • Too awesome.

  • Buddy Guy is amazing!

  • John Mayer is a beast. Buddy Guy is off the chain. Haters wake up.

  • @roundman3000 Men just hate Mayer because he get's the best snatch.

  • @Elina2daDenwa lololol

  • @roundman3000

Mayer is a lightweight in comparison

  • @roundman3000

also see youtube : sweet home arnies (chicago)

    mby

  • @roundman3000

Yea for fuckin' real bro! Growin' up on the south side of Chicago and seeing Buddy tons of times, along with a a couple hundred more great , great, great blues guitarist / singers over 35 years. That would cut John's head clean off!!!! Buddy included of course. Mayer is great! They are just havin' fun. Puttin'on a show. But late at night in one of these clubs and no cameras? Off goes the head John!!!!

  • God there are some stupid comments on this vid! It doesn't matter what anyone thinks of Mayer...he's a fantastic guitar player. You self-proclaimed experts are a dime a dozen. Comparisons are one of the trademarks of a small, petty mind.

  • i agree. if these "experts" really were what they think they are, they wouldn't be sitting on youtube commenting about others. they'd be the ones people would comment about.

  • @11spike7 I think more people agree than not, I know I have respect......not many are mature enough to just dig the work.....its petty and sad.

  • @11spike7 Isn't the idea of genre basically just comparison? Haven't read any of the comments you're talking about, probably the same stupid "nothing compared to Hendrix"/ "zomg this is likes totally better than justin bieber LOL" crap?

  • wonder if these guys dissing johns playin have ever watched his where the light is dvd.

watch slow dancing in a burning room song and gravity on that dvd.

if u still dont think hes one with his guitar its ur personal opinion nuff said

  • there are tons of other examples. hell, search "john mayer - voodoo chile" and i don't give a flying fuck what style you prefer, you will be impressed with that version. john is ridiculously talented. all these other little bitches who sit there and complain that mayer isn't good are either jealous that he's doing things they can't, or are just pissed that there's new talent in town. and don't get me wrong, i love all the old players. but i appreciate new talent.

  • DITTO

  • i havnt bin playn guitar for nearly as long as you.....but just becoz u play n instrument dont mean u understand music....

i know tons of ignorent players......

all im sayin is...johns gerd....but he aint seting himself on fire....

ever wonder y peps tend to play beter while on drugs?

  • Speaking of ignorance, do you know how to use spell check on your computer?

  • LOL Watch after the 1:00 mark.... Mayer's making it sound do pretty that Buddy can't stop smiling. :) I love these guys together.

  • john mayers gurd....but not that gerd...no soul.....that blocks him from the light....sory

  • No soul? Out of your mind. He's one of the most soulful guitarist I've heard...he isn't just basic blues...hes has a buttery smooth, soulful style. I like him.

  • ahhh...lucky you put that last bit in..cause I was just about to vomit...and, um...what's Bob Marley got to do with it...he couldn't play like that??????? That's like saying Michael Jackson is a better dancer than John Mayer...

  • bob marleys got everything to do with it...

if you c this music as just who can physically move ther fingers in beter ways then....sure thats your opinion

but in my opinion music has a lot to do with the way a person thinks....bcoz its really your mind playing the instrument...

the beter u can phycially play..the mor you can project out.....

and john mayer can barely controll his ego...so his mind is useless....nd his playing is alright....not great

  • You assume much..I never said anything about physically moving fingers etc...I've been playing guitar for over 20 years and I'm guessing you don't play so well yourself for at the very least you'd understand what was going on here a bit better...no offence...just an assumption. (cont)

  • f you don't like Mayer's music that's cool. I happen to love Bob Marley but even he surrounded him self with musicians of a higher calibre than he...which has nothing to do with song writing which is where his strength was...don't get the two confused just cause you are good at one doesn't necessarily mean your good at both...

  • everybody listen to john mayer's live album "Where the light is" then judge again. One of the best albums in my possesion

  • very very true :)

  • Yeah I wouldnt have gotten into the blues if it werent for mayer back in 05 with Try!. That album did a lot to just keep things alive and flowing, I've never felt another album like it, it really knocked me out. When you dont pay attention to the blues your whole life, and then something like that comes along it really knocks you out. From there I fell in love with SRV and fell in love with all the classics. A year ago I SAW buddy guy up close. I thank john mayer. Hes a damn fine player. :)

  • Ditto my friend!

  • Exactly, no other words needed!

  • Yes, I do want to go home. One of these days I will be back. Chicago-my home, my love, greatest city on earth!

Home to the greatest football team (1985) with the 2 greatest running backs (sayers and payton) with the greatest defense. Home to the greatest basketball team with the greatest player (Jordan).

Home of the worlds best pizza, worlds most notorious mobster-al capone.

  • I do enjoy Chicago. You forgot the best 80's film - Ferris and Blues Bros.

BTW- NY all the way. The house Babe Built, Meyer Lanksy/Bennie Seagal/ Lucky Looch. Etc. too much history

  • there shouldnt really be any argument because theyre all amazing guitarists, and thats all we should appreciate, im pretty sure none of them have any beef with eachother, always respect and love for the guitar thats all that should matter

  • Duane Allman!!!

  • Hey! I was there, by chance. :)

  • i love sex. D

  • dude stop fuckin spamming every youtube page, its really annoying

  • Just shut up and enjoy the music, nobody cares who you like or who you don't like. Every guitar player has high points and low points in their career, so why argue back and forth when that ruins the music? Just listen.

  • well anybody could make that argument that trucks is better then mayer, but u could also say that about fruciante. u can say what u want about which one of the three is better but they are all incredible players. and dont judge fruciante by his gay chilli pepper solos, he is much more talented then that.

i personally think mayer has more of a feel with the blues but trucks is more technicaly advanced then him, and i would say fruciante has a good feel and is technicaly good in rockish styles

  • I mean yall can say what you want about Mayer. But the fact is Clapton loves him, B.B loves him, Buddy Guy loves him, and he is single handedly brought the blues you love so much back in the lime light, and introducing it to a new generation.

  • ill agree with that. tons of people would never have gotten into the blues if it werent for mayer. and seeing as clapton, buddy, and bb all want to play with him, his guitar heros, has to say somethin about him

  • definitely agree....

  • Lots of great guitar players in all forms of music. I don't argue about who is best; I just enjoy them all.

  • true

  • i be seeing this dude and GEORGE THOROGOOD AND THE DESTROYED!! tonite at spotlight 29 nigga yeah!

  • john mayer is great, but when buddy guy sings and plays it gives me chills.

too bad greats like buddy guy, albert collins, albert king, and even SRV are known only to those who look for players like them instead of just listening to what the radio gives you.

  • john mayer is great but i just love how buddy always shows him hes still got it

  • i m nina from israel,,i have to say,,even i m in my 50th,,i just loveeeeeeee your music,,,enjoy it a lot..

  • you think idk i havnt been around that long im only 15 so idk but i went to see him last month or somthing it was one of the best nights of my life

  • John Mayer is cool on this one... But the Master of the blues Buddy is far away...

  • just to support my comment i was wandering around on the internet and i came across a blog commenting on the good morning america performace by mayer and clapton and it said " john mayer was performing with some guy named eric clapton" im lk whattt??!?!?!?!? god is not just some guy lk john is a great guitrist but hes a long way from overshadowing eric clapton. clapton is god.

  • clapton is now a legend but his skills are starting to decline due to his aging

  • Very true, although Clapton may perhaps not be as good (his words) as he once was, Mayer is nowhere near Clapton at a similar age.

  • no worries

  • i was there it was amazing!

  • haha i love the sceaming of the teenage girls in the background who are there because of john and his pop work theyve probs never heard of buddy guy in there lives, its a shame

  • sorry i accdidently gave you a thumbs down, i meant to give you a thumbs up.

  • That is why it is cool of John Mayer to bring Buddy Guy to the attention of an entirely different niche.

  • true that never occured to me

  • i went to see buddy at the bridgewater hall yesterday and it was amazing. loved the way he went into the crowd and sat in the empty chairs and is just generally a great showman. absolute legend, and for his age hes still goin strong.

and i gotta say this is a great vid :)

  • that was a mental concert. Just unbelievable wasn't it! Such an amazing showman!

  • it sure was...hes got so much presence in the room as well and not just beccause he had a guitar. he had the audience rapped in his little finger :)

i laughed at the guy there who was tryin to get buddy annoyed by sayin things about muddy waters but the guy was out done by about 2,000 to 1 and he just shut up after that lol...this is all about the bridgewater hall concert btw, not the vid :D

  • Buddy Guy destroys Mayer in the end...

  • hahaha no he really doesn't

buddy guy is one of he originals but mayer has so much more finesse and flow. buddy guy is just stock licks

  • Buddy Guy sure is legendary, and although I think Mayer is a very good (VERY) good bluesman with true talent on guitar, of course the two are uncomparable. Still, I like when legends match with younger performers, cos it gives a chance to young listeners, who don't know maybe anything about the "legends" in music, to raise up their curiosity and that's a positive thing.

Buddy is a music precious stone. None could disagree: thanx for posting this.

  • I like John but I still have no idea why he and his guitar is there with a legend such as Buddy Guy. I suppose I'm just jealous but that's like Janet Jackson on the stage with Aretha Franklin, it should never happen

  • Don't dis Aretha like that. Show her some R-E-S-P-E-C-T.

  • What the hell I wasn't dissing Aretha! Aretha is the greatest singer EVER! Get out of here.

  • No one was taught a lesson. They jammed, not for the first time, and just had a good time. Anyone who think Mayer needs to be taught a "lesson" just doesn't like his image, he's a great guitarist, not a legend like Buddy, but a great guitarist nonetheless, show some respect for both of them. I highly doubt Buddy would be up there unless he knew what John was capable of.

  • john mayer was taught a blues lesson here... buddy guy the legend - he inspired hendrix; how can a guitarist be given higher praise than that?

  • "artists"

  • John Mayor is one of the few artists to come out in the last decade I can really see sticking around for more than the standard three or four year stint. Artists come and go but I think you can really tell when one is serious about leaving a mark in the business.

  • John's good, not great.

  • He had a little trouble singing with the amazing Buddy Guy, but he is great.

John Mayer will be the closest thing we are going to see to Clapton or SRV.

Do you hear how he played here?!

    Want resounding proof?

Hear his show "Austin City Limits 2008".

He is SRV and Clapton but without the drugs and booze. He is sharp and shreds to all hell, and he is still young!

  • Maybe the closest, but only for a while.

As for him being young, the dued is 33. By the time Clapton was 33, he had done the yardbirds, John Mayall, Cream, Blind Faith and Derek and the dominoes, and forever changed the face of rock music. Jimi Hendirx was dead 27! So I think maybe instead of everyone making excuses why John Mayer deserves to be a guitar god, maybe we should just accept he isn't there yet, and stop saying things like he is still young, cause it''s just not a good excuse.

  • Mayer hasn't done what Clapton has done, but honestly who has except for an illustrious few?

No one is saying that Mayer should be a

Guitar God. I was arguing the point that Mayer is indeed great, not just good. Can you name some blues guitarists from his generation that you think are better?

He has technical Blues prowess and agility and more importantly he is creative: He has staying power.

He played this song at the Austin CL 2007 times ten: watch?v=WtY8Zu8I_AA&feature=related

  • Sorry dude, I might have misinterpreted, I wasn't trying to have a go at you. I agree Mayer is a good/great player, I just get sick of people who read the rolling Stone intereview making comments about how wonderful and godly he is, and then using his age as a defence if you point out that he isn't really at that stage yet, My apologies again if I caused offence, it wasn't my intention.

  • haha EVERY time an audience starts clapping with music, they speed up, it's like newton's third law or something.

  • i was at that concert it was amazing hearing the two of them on stage

  • Awesome! Johny Mayer sounds good playin Stevie's style. I guess he's the closest we'll ever get to hearing him again...maybe KWS too! got the chills

  • this happened at summerfest as well, i was there, it was pretty awesome.

  • John on stage with an icon like Buddy and someone John admires soo much thrilled me to no end. Loved it! What a legendary happening! Thanks for sharing. June

  • oh, that's just awsome.. when was this?

  • on the 4th

  • i was there, it was great when buddy guy did this
