  • I'm still unsure of when and how i should use the rewind button on the bottom of the diana mini... do i use it after every shot i take? and how many times do i turn it?

  • @kaseyyyyyy14 You only use the rewind button at the end of the roll when you are ready to rewind the roll, not after every shot. Gently turn the winder knob until it stops. I say gently, because it is quite easy to accidently overwinding the knob.

  • @kaituba Thank you so much! :)

  • Hi Kai!

Between the Holga 135BC and the Diana Mini, which one would you reccomend?

  • @HijoDelCeluloide Same question here. I love the flash and the different frame sizes of the Diana mini, but I prefer the Hola 135BC's look, plus it looks more solid

  • @HelloitsKnastyX3 For 35mm color film, you can go to anyplace that has a 1-hour lab. Many drugstores and some big box stores still run 1-hour 35mm film labs.

For the best cost efficiency, I usually ask for processing and a CD with the images scanned, rather than prints. If I need prints, I can go back and order prints of the images I want.

  • Do you know if Walgreens will print the half frame photos properly? I definitely want to get this camera, but I just need to make sure that I can get the film developed there.

  • when you shoot half frame does it affect the film advance? or do you have to approximate it?

  • @U23Drocs Yes, the film only needs to advance a half frame in half frame mode, but the camera should automatically adjust for it when you slide the switch to half frame mode. The other thing to remember is that you shouldn't switch back and forth between full frame and half frame mode in the same roll. The automated equipment at most labs can't deal with your film if shot that way.

  • @kaituba what would you recommend me to buy? Diana F+ or Diana Mini F+

  • @ree996 If new to film, I recommend a 35mm lo-fi camera. You should also take a look at the Holga 135 and the Lomography La Sardina.

  • @ree996 That depends. If you have shot with 120 film before, and know where to get your 120 film processed, go for the DIana F+, but if you are new to film photography, go with the Mini, or Holga 135 or Lomography La Sardina 35mm cameras.

  • What happened to your hand?

  • I would have thought sunny would be f11, and cloudy f8? Was that a mistake?

Ive had this camera for a while now, and love the freedom of always having one in my coat pocket.

  • @rorrt You are correct, I transposed the f/settings. (Sunny F/11, Cloudy F/8 on the Diana Mini)

  • the gel filters don't come with the flash??

  • @rosannamfan The gel filters come with the flash.

  • @kaituba test comment

  • wait.. can someone please answer this? Does this camera print out photos instantly?

  • @FaceBookAddict1999 No, this is a 35mm film camera.

  • @kaituba thanks(:

  • @FaceBookAddict1999 it can if you buy the instant back

  • @alix1493 wrong. the instant back doesn't fit the Mini, it only fits the Diana+ or Diana F+ cameras

  • im getting this soon

  • deos the mini diana work with the diana instant back?

  • @harryrudham3 No, the Diana Instant Film back only works with the full sized Lomography Diana+ and Diana F+ cameras.

  • it's very cute,how much it ???

  • @DyaElliya14211 The stock blue-black Mini is going for $55, or $95 with the flash, on Amazon

  • @DyaElliya14211 i paid mine for 99 AUD

  • Do I need to be "in the know" with photography to buy one of these? It's something I'd really like to do but it's so hit and miss with me. Very informative.

  • @OssyTuber No, you don't have to be a photo geek to use one of these cameras, but it does require a bit more thinking than your basic digital camera. If you have the camera set wrong, you won't get the instant feedback to correct the problem. Film cameras also don't work well in low light situations that digital cameras easily deal with, so you won't be able to shoot indoors or at night, or evenings without using the flash.

  • @kaituba Thanks very much for the reply! I'm still 50/50 whether to take the leap.

  • why some of my films are blank.. its like there all exposed? in a 32 shots i ve only have 8 pictures??? all are blacks? im kinda new to this lomo thing so i dont what ive done wrong.

    I use (135 or 35mm film)

in sunny mode when im outside

use N when outside (actually i dont use B becasue i dont have a flash)

also my pictures are kinda cut?not in the middle of the picture

thanks for anyone who will be answering..

  • @rieleva Are you using a film with ISO 400? Shooting with films with a lower ISO, as with ISO 200, you need to give the film additional exposure by using the larger aperture (Cloudy). If it's already cloudy, then your film may be underexposed. Off center images is a lab problem. When I turn my film in to my lab, I tell them the images are square and I expect them to be centered on the standard frame. Check my post on other problems: bitDOTly/kFilmHelp -replace the DOT with a .

  • @kaituba thanks. ill try what you said... btw im using ISO 200.. the guy in the film store said its just ok to use that when i ask what's the right film to use in my lomo(i describe to him what lomo im using)... really really thank you ^__^

  • i bought this camera with the flash and all my images came under expose....and it was very bright outside and i had it in sunny mode and had it in the non-long exposure setting...you think i got a bad camera?

  • @Pirru805 If you are shooting with a slower film (ISO 200 or lower), it is possible to underexpose film with the sunny setting. If outside, you will need to use the semi-cloudy or cloudy setting to get a proper exposure.

  • Hello Kai,

I would like to start lomography but I'm a bit confused with all these cameras, I don't really know wich one to chose. I would like to start with a classic one first, like the Diana F+ but then there's also the Holga, the Diana Mini etc... And I'm also interested in fisheye cameras .

  • @olivia1910 Sorry for my late reply. It's been a busy couple of months at the day job. For my recommendation for a beginner camera, check out my blog post on the subject: dianacameraDOTcom/get-started/ -replace the DOT with a . - sorry, but youtube doesn't like links in these comments.

  • Hi Kai, your videos are great!

Just wondering if you know anything about there being such things as small flashes that would fit onto the Diana MINI but not be bulky. The Diana Flash really gets in the way and i was wondering if there is any flash out there that wouldn't get too much in the way considering this camera is able to just slip in your pocket! Thanks

  • @chelsimmons

Look up the lomography Ringflash. I find it far more functional, and way less intrusive.

  • or you could just use an iPhone app, way more easier

  • will you know how mutch you will need to wind the film? andif you switch from rectangular frame to half frame, will that change?

also, will the counter change to?

  • why buy clothing for hundreds of dollars when you can get lots of these lovely lomo cameras : D

  • Thank you kai!

  • hi kai

i was just wonder what YOUR favorite camera is, the diana mini or the diana F+.

i just wanted to know your opinion because not most people ask for your thoughts on the products.

and btw, are their any major differences between the mini and the F+?

  • @thecorruptedmind The biggest difference between the Mini and F+ are the types of film they use. The Mini uses 35mm film while the F+ uses 120 film. 120 film is much more difficult find, and more expensive to get processed. My fave camera between the 2 is the Diana F+, but for beginners, I like to recommend the Holga 135.

  • When you take photos on the rectangular frame setting, once you have taken the first half of the picture, do you need to wind the film before you can take the other half of the photo??

  • @jadepade Yes, unless you want to make a double exposure, wind after every shot. Switching the camera to half frame mode adjusts the advance mechanism.

  • @kaituba Thank you! I wasn't too sure! So I wind it until its stops and then take the next half?

  • How small is too small? The camera is about 3.75" wide,2.75" tall, 2.375" deep.

  • How small is the mini:O Planning to get one at UO but I don't want it to be toooooooo small.

  • Hey Kai! I have a question! I really love the vignetting effect that the Diana has! I've heard however that you have to use 120mm film to get it. Is that 120mm film for the 35mm Diana mini OR it it 120mm for the Diana f+? I would prefer to buy the F+ but I don't know if I'll get the effect!? Also, can the F+ use 35mm film? Thanks! :)

  • @YNTMCompetition The Diana F+ uses 120mm film. The Diana Mini uses 35mm. You can buy a 35mm adapter for the F+, but the cheapest one I've seen was 30 dollars.

  • @YNTMCompetition The Diana Mini uses 35mm film, and the DIana F+ uses 120 film. The best effect and look is captured by the larger camera and 120 film, but 120 film can be difficult to work with. For beginners, I recommend the Holga 135BC over the Mini. The Mini can be a little tempermental to work with sometimes. BTW, it's not 120mm, the 120 is an number designation given the film by Kodak, who created the film in the early 1900's.

  • @kaituba ok thanks a lot! :D I'll look into the Holga!

  • HOW MUCH WAS THE DIANA MINI READY TO TAKE PICTURES?

CAUSE ALL I SEE IS AROUND 50€, PLUS THE 45€ OF THE FLASH, PLUS THIS AND PLUS THAT... SO TO START, HOW MUCH IS THE CHEAPEST ONE? HOW MUCH IS THE DIANA MINI READY TO TAKE PICTURE? WHITOUT ALL THE EXPENSIVE STUFF... thanks!

  • @1MyGreece I'm not sure where you are, but go online, you can sometimes find deals on the Mini and flash. How much is the Diana Mini, ready to take photos? about 50€. You don't need a flash unit unless you need to shoot in low-light conditions (at night or indoors)

  • Comment removed

  • i REALLY want one of these!

just wondering, what is the bigger version called and does it need a flash?

  • @iwannayourblood Sorry, I missed your comment from many months ago. The bigger version is the Diana F+. You only need the flash if you plan on shooting indoors or in low light situations.

  • i like the classic look of it :D

  • I took two rolls of film with my new Mini: one entirely in square format, the other entirely in half frame. I brought it to a one hour lab here (I actually can't even find a professional lab in this area) and asked them to process and scan the film. When I picked it up, the guy said he couldn't get either roll to scan. What should I do to get my photos? Should I try bringing them to another lab? I can't afford a film scanner. :(

  • @carmenism Did the lab tech explain why he couldn't get the rolls to scan? Too dark, too light or? Take the rolls to another lab and if they feel they are unprintable, find out why, and ask what can be done to correct the problem.

  • @kaituba He said it was because they were both square format, which isn't true of course because one of them was half frame. But basically he said his scanner couldn't do "square format."

  • @carmenism Okay, I think I understand. The tech does not understand the Diana Mini. the square format photos are centered on a standard 35mm frame, so he only needs to make sure that there is an equal amount of black space on either side of the images. For the half frame photos, they print 2 at a time. 2 half frames equal one standard 35mm frame.

  • can you connect a Diana Camera to the computer?

or does the film HAVE to be generated?

  • @kari513lily Diana cameras are not digital, they use film. The film, once processed becomes negatives, which need to be scanned with a film scanner to become digitized.

  • hi Kai, I just wondered in your opinion which holds the best all round advantages the Lomo Diana or the Holga 120N? I am undecided which one to get out of these two cameras lol!

  • @spidersue I am fond of the Diana+, but I love the results I get from my Holga. Overall, I find that Holga to be a little more reliable, and I like the lens a little better.

If you want flexibility and more attachements, then go with the Diana.

  • @kaituba I went for the Diana in the end after extensive research, as you say it is more flexibility, but having seen the Holga 120 I will probably get that one too, once I have tasted a bit of the results of my shooting this week. Also thanks for the tutorials, has been most helpful, I will continue to absorb your channel until I get the confidence up to take my camera this weekend!

  • @spidersue I like shooting with my Holga. I just got the new and improved Holga 120N, which has the very worthwhile aperture fix. New video for the updated model is being posted this morning. If you get a Holga 120 camera, wait a while. It may take a bit for the older models to clear the supply pipelines.

  • Can this take a fullsize 35mm picutre?

  • @parkourmormon No. It shoots a square image, 24x24mm frame centered on a standard 35mm frame (24x36).

  • Should I get the diana mini or the diana+ with the 35mm adapter so I can get different lenses and such.

  • @Breatles1 I prefer my Diana+ over my Mini, because the lens is better. If you are using the 35mm film adapter, you should also pair it with the Super Wide Angle or Fisheye Lens. This will help the cropped down look of the standard lens when used with the 35mm back.

  • เจ๋ง !!

  • Kai, thnks you!

  • ummm my cable release works fine on mine i didnt need to get an adapter

  • i'm gonna get one, they look like a lot of fun & they're so cheap!

  • thanks for the vid, really helpful :)

  • how many pictures can you take in one roll of film?

  • Are the apertures and settings mostly the same as the Diana F+ but it's just smaller and uses 35mm film? And it takes the normal size photos just like the usual camera you use right? :D

  • I've watched Fight Club last night and the burn on your hand is a little too familiar :S I hope you don't have that mark (if it's a burn or not) for the same reason the guy in the movie had it.

  • Hi kai, is it necessary to have a flash with a diana mini? We dun need a flash in a sunny day, rite? how about taking photo indoor?

  • which should i get, the diana f+ with 35mm back or diana mini? :\

  • does the diana f+ also have a cable release?

  • @lorneyb No, you will have to get the cable release adapter.

  • thx for this unboxing im gonna getting one :D

  • wtf the lenses aren't interchangeable?! whats the point of buying this then!!!

  • @Vince3k - The point of this camera is to use the cheaper and easier to process 35mm film, but the trade-off is no accessories.

  • do you order all of your cameras online?

or what site you use? ;]

  • The switch on the back of the camera automatically changes the advance mechanism so that it only advances 1/2 frame instead of full frame. Don't mix in 1/2 frame photos with full frame photos, because the automatic equipment at most labs won't be able to deal with it.

  • just got this baby today, I would like know how does the half-frame photo works? do I take a picture, roll advance wheel half way before it finish and take photo? or just roll all the way end?

  • does the instant back for the big diana camera work with the mini?

  • The Instant film back for the Diana+ is incompatible.

It wouldn't work very well anyways, since the Instant film image size is the same as the film negative. In the Mini's case, this means the images would either be 24x17 (half frame) or 24x24mm, which is about postage stamp sized!

  • hey, your videos are very helpful. I had one question though. When i shoot my pictures, none of them come out in the half frame format, and most of the pictures did not come out at all. (my developer only printed 24 out of the 72). is there something I did wrong, or should I write out development instructions when i send the photos in? Thank you!

  • Did you have the camera switched to the half-frame 17x24 format? Were the negatives rectangular or square? How many standard frames did your original roll of film have? 35mm film usually comes in 24exp. or 36exp. Check the frame switch on the back of the camera. Before you load the next roll of film, be sure to reset the film counter by tripping the shutter with the camera back off.

  • its on 17x24. the negatives are rectangular. I thought that the pics were supposed to be developed as 2 small photos on one picture. its a 24 exp so its actually supposed to be 48, not 72.. but they still only printed 24. the large majority of the photos came back gray or too blurred to view even tho they were taken in daylight.

  • Look at your negatives, if your half-frames have more than a few millimeters gap between them, then there is something wrong. It was advancing for the full frame while the mask for half frame was engaged. My camera has done this, and I'm not sure why. I am going to be playing with it a little bit, to see if there is a problem, as I am hoping to shoot half-frame mode for my upcoming China trip.

  • Where do you get your film developed? If you take pictures on half-frame setting, can you drop your film in a standard Kodak stand or do you have to send it to a special developer?

  • @TheSolitaryPoet since it uses 35mm film (the same as disposable cameras) you can drop your film off anywhere that develops film. its the most widely accepted film for being developed (i believe)

  • You can get 35mm film processed at any 1-hour lab.

  • Cross processing refers to the process of taking slide film and processing it as negative film. The color shifts can sometimes be interesting. Go to flickr and search for cross processing or xpro. It can also refer to taking a negative film and having it processed as slide film. If you want to try this, you will have to locate a lab willing to do it. Many 1-hour labs won't, as it may muck up their processing chemicals.

  • Very good video! When you say "the lense is not interchangeable," does that mean it will not mount with the fisheye?

  • The Lomography fisheye for the Diana + or F+ is not compatible with the Diana Mini. I'm working on a video for the Mini and fisheye adaption. For an update, keep an eye here or follow me on Twitter (kaiphoto). It will be up this week.

  • yeah Lomo camera has cool packaging

  • my brothers name is kai! whoa never heard anyone else with that name. im getting this for christmas thanks!

can you take pictures indoors, do they turn out? or do you need the flash for them to turn out well?

  • hey i have a question. could i get a fisheye lense for a diana f+ medium????? oh yea, great videos

  • Medium? Do you mean the Mini? If you mean the standard Diana F+, yes there is a fisheye lens for it.

There are not any lens accessories for the Diana Mini, but I expect Lomography to come out with a few in the future.

  • Thinking about getting this camera. It looks a little cheep though. Does it feel cheep?

  • Yes, it shares a similar lightweight construction that many lo- fi cameras have. If it was solid and well constructed, I'm not sure if it would be considered a lo- fi camera, which is pretty much it's reason for being. In terms of construction, I would rate it above a vintage or Lomography Diana, but a little below a Holga 120 (which are built like little tanks).

  • oh i mean the standard diana f+. oh yeah i have one more question. it says every camera is different, will every one give you a nice lomo effect

  • that is some gorgeous packaging

  • Sunny isnt f8,it is f11!

  • @dilandogbp Whatever! That's what instructions are for.

  • :( !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Is the mini compatible with the other lens that they sell??? such as the 38mm Diana+ Super Wide lens or the 110mm Diana+ Telephoto Lens????

  • Sorry, but the only accessory compatible with the Mini, is the Diana+ Flash. The lens is fixed, not interchangeable like the Diana+.

  • The thing is, when I first got it I could move the switch from half frame to full-frame but when I loaded the film I couldn't switch from full-frame to half-frame. Do you think it's because I loaded the film incorrectly? I still haven't finished with the roll in my camera so I'll take a look inside after I finished it. Thanks again Kai!

  • you can only change format after taking a photo

and before you wind it on

    hope this helps

  • Oh yeah thank you soooooooooo much! I thought I was gonna have to send it back to the shop and ask for a replacement or something!

  • Hey Kai, I'm having trouble with my Diana Mini. I can't change the format from full-frame to half-frame. I can't move it at all, it's stuck. Do you have any idea what's wrong with it? Your help would be really appreciated :)

  • Hello, I haven't had this problem myself. Take a look on the inside of the camera, and see if anything is causing the little frame wings from switching into place.

  • When I finish the roll in my Diana Mini, I'll take a look to see if I can figure out what might be causing your problem.

  • Kai

do you have problemswith the film counter not resetting? thanks, bob

  • The film counter resets when you remove the camera back and then trip the shutter. I'm not completely happy at the manual reset of the counter and wish it would resetliene most 35mm cameras, when you open the camera back.

  • what did you do to your hand, man? that looks pretty brutal

  • daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaamyyyyyyyum i should buy that first!

  • i'm in the middle of confusion to buy Diana Mini or Supersampler. What do you guys think? Should i buy Diana Mini or Supersampler instead?

  • I like the Diana Mini over the Supersampler, since it is a regular camera. The Supersampler can be fun, but it only does the multiple slice thing, which I would get tired of pretty quickly. If I had a choice, I would get the Diana Mini first, and then add the supersampler later for fun.

  • OMG - a Diana Mini?? I got to get one!

  • how old are thoes?

  • arrgh! I transposed the settings. Sunny is f/11 and Cloudy is f/8.

  • Sunny is f/8 and cloudy is f/11? Are you sure?

  • Do diana clones take different kinds of pictures than a reg diana or are they the same but with different casing

  • The clones are different. I find the original vintage cameras take more interesting photos, but they are a bit more trouble to work with.

  • they're clones

because they take exactly the same shots

    and also look the same.

there are only a few visual differences between original diana's and clones. most of them being the name

  • thanks for uploading. I've been looking for a diana mini video ever since they came out.

  • I bought Diana F+ just few weeks ago but I already want her smaller sister too.

  • I must add this to my collection!

  • i like it :)
