  • Song from the soul

  • Pacific Gas & Electric (a name later shortened to PG&E) was a blues-rock band from California (of course) consisting of lead singer Charles Allen, guitarists Glenn Schwartz and Tom Marshall, bassist Brent Brock and drummer Frank Cook. This record, featuing backup vocals by The Blackberries, reached #14 over a twelve-week run beginning May 30, 1970. None of their follow-ups. though. caused more than a tiny ripple and the group broke up. 20 years later, lead singer Allen died at age 46.

  • Somethings never grow old!

  • I'm an atheist and I love this song!

  • R - U - RED - D. OR NOT MO - FCKERS? NOTICE I WAS NICE AND LEFT OUT THE " U " . PROBABLY BECAUSE I WAS NOT RED - D.

  • Glenn Schwartz on lead guitar. He'd gotten PROMOTED from lead guitar for the pre-Walsh James Gang. Glenn still pays regularly here in Cleveland - although his muse is clearly from some other plane of existence.

  • Gas and electricity is increasing in price here in the UK and I sure hope the value of this non radio 2 type music is as well.

  • Are you ready for this...EARGASM!!

  • Thanks for the info on the two versions of this particular song. I had forgotten that and or didn't really know. My copy of the record is a promo copy with the shortened

version on one side (2:40) with the longer version on the other side (5:49). I did not

know until now that the longer version was on the other side. Thanks again for the info.

  • @larrynealwaxmuseum

.... you're a lucky dude - not many copies of the short/long versions, back to back, have survived after so many years.. as a former DJ, I am officially jealous!

.... if you can, or know somebody who can, get the shorter version posted... would be interested to see how the "debate' on the versions would turn out !

    JP

  • This might help to clarify the debate on the 2 versions of this song, since I spun them both, back in the day....

The first version that was released was the short version. Within a matter of days, the second, longer version was released . Since most radio stations at the time received both copies, it was left up to the Program Director to make the choice which version was put into rotation. As you might expect, the longer version ended up the "FM" favorite: many AM stations

    played both !

  • I've been singing Black Gospel for 20 years, and this is the song that started this skinny white boy singin, back when i was 9

  • YES! YES! I'M READY!!! AMEN

  • Right on!

  • ive got to know yea!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • This song was big here in OKC as well as nationally. However, the local top 40 radio station edited it down and started it at the 43 second of your video where they sing "are you ready" cold. They also edited out a lot of the music in the center. I don't know if other stations did this or not. Would you beieve I was thinking of this record just last night. Good Post.

  • Yes, I'm ready! In 1972, I was living with my buddy Vern in Atlanta. We had to get up early for work and most every morning we put on this song to get us motivated for the day. I won't ever forget that. TY for posting it.

  • @rrtallon Wow, eerily similar to my experience! I was (but am no longer) one of the Jesus people and even attended the giant Explo 72 in Dallas. This song was just so durn'd cool and always motivated me.

  • @OBDjFH05 I was and still am one of the "Jesus People" and loved this song so much....I still have the 45. Those days were so special....it's hard to put them into words. I never attended the Explo....but was very much a part of the Jesus movement in Ohio. Great memories...He's still my Hero even now.

  • 'Tho the future of rock looked uncertain less than a month after the breakup of the Beatles, the summer of 1970 proved to be a good mixed bag of music. Themes from the Rock Opera `Tommy', a Gospel-tinged song about Woodstock and this intense number about the Rapture.

  • As my First Sergeant Williamson---a black dude---and a decorated Green Beret that served in Vietnam, once said: "If you STAY ready, you don't have to GET ready!" "And if one of my Sergeants catches you she'in and he'in in MY barracks, I'm gonna take some money out of your pocket, and donate it to The Old Soldiers' Home!" I heard THAT.

  • Listen to the guitar solo 2 min 15 secs into this fantastic Gospel/blues, soul/funk classic. It's been on my juke box since 1970. Play LOUD! Mick C. (Bollix369)

  • bluzboy 55...you hit the jackpot there my man!

  • The lead guitar from 2:02 through 3:34 is incredible! Great jam!

  • he trobat aquesta cançó 29 anys després ... fantàstic ... em sento encara jove i trempat ...

  • i saw PG & E in a little nightclub in Milwaukee around 1972; i was 22. They were the 1st band followed by the Buddy Miles Express. Great Show! The guitar solo was tremendous. The guitarist walked thru the crowd while he played (still plugged in - no wireless back then. Maybe 400 total people were there. Think it cost around $5.00!

  • I was with Thee Prophets back in those days and these guys were on the Up Beat show the same week that we were.

  • I have been trying to buy this for a couple of years; no one has it. I love it.

  • Jeugdsentiment 1970...wow..

  • Directamente a la historia del Rock. Me entusiasmó desde la primera vez que la oí.

  • Love this song! So powerful.

What people need to realize, however, is that when "He" comes, it won't be some white man descending form the clouds - you will see "Him" in the eyes of all those who have opened up their hearts, to Love and Truth! "The King" lives in all men, if their hearts are open to Him! So be READY to accept Him into your heart!

  • O thank you Ssoooo much for the religious instruction! I have my own view of this which shall remain PRIVATE, thank you very much.

  • Okeedokee!

(as "The Man" said - "Cast not your pearls to swine, lest they trample them, then turn and rend you!")

  • Or, stay away from the pigs in the 1st place!

Man belongeth not in the pens of sow and boar.

  • Whatever that's supposed to mean...

  • ??? What part of "stay out of the PigPen"

    don't you understand?!

-- hankster U R the 1 who made reference to 'swine', remember??!

  • Ain't no pigpens where I live...

I'm assuming there's an "analogy" there somewhere, but I'm just not getting it.

(Are you attempting to suggest that I keep bad company?? Considering you don't even know me, don't know how you'd come to that conclusion...)

Although I would say that you are proving to be a bit of a "boar"! (now there's a clear analogy, for ya!)

  • Wow thanks for posting this. I haven't heard this song in years. 1970 rock on!

  • "Are you ready?" Wow, a song with faith meaning and few are offended. What have we done where we can't speak or sing faith messages to our brothers and sisters without offending? What have we done? Please bring this music back. Where have you gone Pacific Gas and Electric. Please come back!

  • Right on, our HS had these guys in and I wondered why, now I know why our ultra conservative principal had them in for a show. At Kirkwood MO 1970

  • Thanks for posting this. It's easily one of the most underrated and overlooked songs of the early 70's.

And nanajanamike is right... 1970 was definitely an awesome year for music.

  • 1970 was a fantastic year for music.Lots of one-hit wonders...but you didn't know it at the time!

  • one of my favorites.

  • Love this song back when it first came out.

  • I loved this genre song, just like "Sweet Cherry Wine" and "Spirit in the Sky." The youth of the day were presented with the gospel and many didn't even realize it.

  • great choice.luv it

  • I was 17 in 1970 this act was at our high school in the gym/auditorium! great to hear the track now whenever I want!

  • So much soul should be illegal! It's fantastic. The guitar solo (LOUD) still gives me shivers even 39 years later. Mick C.

  • I was 12 when this came out, and I had the 45. What an all time classic! I used to play it to death. Of coarse this is the best one -The Long Version!

  • check out the live version video...way better!

  • I used to have this on an album great stuff and yes Charlie Allen the vocalist has been gone a long time and yes Guitar Glenn their guitarist kicked ass check out his solo on She's Long and She's Tall off their first album the song was recorded live @ Fillmore West in SF.They were a great band all you young people check them out their first album is their best reminds me of better times i love the late 60's and early 70's im glad i was alive and young back then.

  • My sister used to have this 45 and I'd listen to it over and over. Great stuff. Thanks for posting this!

  • yes yes I'm ready

    yes yes I'm ready

    yes yes I'm ready

    yes yes I'm ready

    yes yes I'm ready

  • guitar solo is in my top ten...Glenn played this on the first take...

  • The vocalist, Charles Allen, died on May 7 of 1990.

  • That's so sad!

  • Yeah, it's really sad. Although I did not grow up during these times, this is when music was good and made by people who actually played instruments. The sound really good live. But some bands today suck at being live?

  • Way too soon.

    Hope he was ready.

  • I'm Ready!

  • A hilarious song!

  • Somebody put the video back up, OK???

  • I like this a lot better without the dancing.

  • I heard them live and rather hear the studio cut.

  • HALLELUJAH! MARANATHA!

  • Anyone ever notice that the drummer misses one beat on the snare at around 2:45? I have this album (vinyl, purchased when released), and I have always wondered about that missed beat.

  • You are right Dude but don't you think it might be a drop out of the tape on the drums canal?

Add &fmt=18 at the end of the URL and the track will play in stereo.

  • Thanks for the stereo tip. Sounds much better.

  • Good Call!

  • It seems more likely that the drummer simply aimed at the snare and missed on the beat you mentioned. With studio time being astronomical in cost, they may have simply decided not to dub in one snare hit. That kind of thing was harder with the technology of the day back then. Besides, the song is 38 years old, and I never noticed the missing lick until I read your comment. I should have because I'm a drummer, lol. Thanks for making a great song more interesting to me!

  • great vocalist...

  • I love this song,I am now 55 years old and I still love this song THANKS

  • One of the best ever!!

  • What I meant to say was, I wore out the 45record years ago!!! hahahaha.

  • JD,
