  • I had a friend when we were kids who would do a great impression of Big Joe with the bombastic vocal, funny faces and all - still cracks me up when I hear this number!!! Love both Big Joe and Bill Haley's version!!!!!

  • ufff tan solo de ver que esta musica es la raiz de la musica que tenemos hoy en dia se e pone chinita la piel This Music is the BEST of BEST

  • What a pro! See the performance at The Apollo.

  • Why couldnt I have been born in this time period?

  • SooooooooooOOOOoooooOOOoo good! R.I.P Joe

  • White man stole da music! He a Debbil!

  • Black people stole Rock and roll from White People, everybody know Elvis invented R&R and wrote this song. BJT why did you steal Elvis's song?

  • @TheMrsoul69 white men stole the music you have it all wrong and dont say i do im a rock and roller and been so for years i doubt you have ,elvis didnt write this either and the black man invented rock and roll and i thank them all

  • @TheMrsoul69 thats pure crap!!!

  • @TheMrsoul69 I see you 're the typical white boy, hates the truth,Elvis was the biggest black music thieve there ever was then that white boy rapper.Whites didn't have nothing to do with the invention of Rock and Roll and you know it.But if it make you feel better to think they did then go right ahead, lie to yourself.

  • I was born in 1945 and we listened to a lot of R & B, Do Wop, etc. I'm just getting a kick out reading the comments of a new generation.

  • Kansas City Joe...

    Can't beat that...

  • 33 people have no soul.

  • Great, thanx!

  • what ever what would the world be with out music :)

  • i wish it was in perfect sync

  • I'm white, but i'll have to say, the black man did it better on this song. ^^

  • @CL137626 Big Joe did this BEFORE Bill Haley.

  • @dal4018

    duh, ya think?

  • @Scari45 There are some ppl who still think Bill Haley did this song originally.

  • @CL137626 we are all humans in the end man.

  • like hey man...he's one gone cat...the music is hipsville....dig my jive yall

  • Dear, Lord, hear my prayer. When i die, let me born again the same year all over again. I promise to dance more and attend every rock and roll show I can during the 50's. I also promise to avoid the 60's and 70's and do my best to keep the 50's music alive and well. Amen!

  • this is amazing i agree but saying that todays music is all rubbish is really misguided, there's still alot of great artists on the go that make amazing music, just because it isn't your thing doesn't mean it's rubbish. when this came out there were people saying it was senseless noise compared to back in their day,

  • i would like to visit America but in year 1950 !!! ca somebody take me there? don t wanna be here anymore :)

  • @mereutare If you find any way pls contact me and take me with you!

  • Rock and roll needs to be brought back!

I use to be a rapper, but now i look back to this stuff and wonder why the hell i was listening to that crap, this stuff is so much better!

  • @Whoami691 Look back once again with the MTV goggles off. As Nujabes, Big Daddy Kane, Buckethead and Steve Vai taught us, there can be beauty in every genre.

  • @Whoami691 Good Rock N Roll. I love the oldies.

  • @Whoami691 What was your name????

  • Francis Davis wrote he saw Joe in 1981 when he was getting old . Joe got on stage & the amplification was ear spilitting, A guy begged the soundman to turn it down. Joe spotted this and bellowed "Stop fiddling with them dials boy! You just leave as they was!". Joe was worried his voice was going, it wasn't. Davis says 'Once he got down to business his voice filled the room and then some....when he began 'Shake, Rattle and Roll' the glasses and bottles on the tables looked like were about to'.

  • In defense of zing zee

Rap definitely came to be after jazz altered many times throughout the course of rock n roll. Many people don't look at the small details that are similar in both rap and jazz

  • @earreola48

Can you say a few small details that are similar?

To me, they're opposite a lot. Except for the few like Coolio, rap has a low skill level of entry, chiefly splicing other artist's samples over more samples looped on sequencers plus a rare ability in verbal skills and in mashing tunes. Jazz can use the last one also, but with talented and polished live artists.

Being good at arranging flowers is not like being good at transforming the flowers while you paint your version of them.

  • An All Time Classic sung by a Very Underated Singer.

    Thanks for this Posting.

  • Shake, rattle and troll!!

  • I wonder what the teens of the twenty first century will bring, possibly some more jazz?? Who know's?? Haha im just kidding, considering what people today define as "music" makes me believe that won't happen, but that will neve stop me from listening to this great music!!

  • The original single can not be topped one of the greatest songs of any era. the way he sings tat for cat that was just the way he sang but almost 60 years ago it can't be beat Smily Lewis I hear you knockin ties it, another treasure from 54

  • oh i get it. it's about fucking

  • I like the way he sings which is really understated, he's not striving to be overly dramatic with the lyrics, just putting the message across...

  • Shout them blues! Jump and shout!

  • Big Joe couldn't read so someone had to whisper the words in his ear. But boy could he sing. Great!!

  • Big Joe Turner is "The Grandpa of Rock and Roll".

  • Believe it or not I am related to this man. He was my grandpa's cousin.

  • @Jazmillenium no way

  • This type of music was frowned upon in the white community because it was laden with sexual innuendo. It was considered "black music". Today, RAP is treated the same way.In another 100 years, Rap music will just as revered as Jazz is today!! Whats sad is that the Rap artists of today, like the Jazz and Rock n' Roll artist of yesteryear, wont be given the credit they deserve UNTIL THERE SIX FEET UNDER. So sad. I guess that's just the plight of Blacks in America. UNAPPRECIATED AND UNDERATED!

  • @ZingZee123456789 serve God. And google melanoma execution

  • @ZingZee123456789 You are an idiot. How can you compare Jazz to modern day Rap?

It has nothing with the "evil white man keepin us down", is just that 90% of rap music, like pop music, is absolute GARBAGE. There's some fantastic rap artists out there like Talib Kweli and Mos Def but they are the minority.

And black artists from Africa like Boubacar Traore, Ali Toure, or Koffi Olomide are much better musicians than most black american rappers. It is THEY who will be revered in 100yrs

  • @jflegionario

Rap music is an offshoot of Jazz.. Just listen to Turner in "Shake Rattle and Roll" IF YOU NEED PROOF. Turner is not carrying a tune here. HE'S TALKING RHYTHMICALLY! How is this any different from what a rapper does?

Are the lyrics of classic Jazz and Rock songs any more substantive and meaningful the the lyrics in Pop and Rap songs of today?

"I'm like a one-eyed cat peepin' in a seafood store"?? That sounds like something straight out of Soulja Boy song!

  • @ZingZee123456789

Do not disgrace jazz by calling rap an "offshoot" of it. The most you can make to argue that, is that rap producers STEAL jazz licks for beats. Turner is carrying a tune. Those are notes he's hitting, with the appropriate syllabic durations to a SINGER, not a rapper.

Rap is not music. It is a subgenre of poetry, often, but not necessarily, done over a beat.

  • @daroseille ...you may want to find "Whitewash Station" by the Memphis Jug Band here on YouTube. It may help you get a clearer picture of what rap is and where it comes from.

  • @ZingZee123456789 sorry but rap music today is utter crap and most whites like it.

as for jazz your right about that, but really i don't see today's rap being appreciated any time in the future. As for the classics of the 80s/90s possibly, but not the stuff of today. personally i like soul stuff of the 60s like Sam Cooke. and im white not that it matters.

  • @20cFilmWannabe Most whites? I think you have the wrong race, more like most blacks like rap.

  • @AnbuSoran A stereotype as equally ridiculous as the comment you criticise.

  • Though it's out of sync, this is in fact a live performance taken from the series from the middle 1950's, "Live at The Apollo".

  • The sync is off, but a seminal performance in popular music history. This clip was used in a great documentary produced for American Movie Classics (now simply "AMC"), that was titled "Hollywood Rocks the Movies - The Early Years". Yes folks, joe and the band were performing live for the cameras here, but is hard to tell because it's out of sync. Still, a great clip. By the way, who the hell were the 29 dislikes for this???

  • Real Music! Justin Beiber SUCKS!

  • @wa1ufo OOOH YEAH !!!

  • Thumbs up if you came here because this song should have been on Fallout 3. =)

  • Oh my gosh... I seriously wish I was sixteen years old, but sixty or seventy years ago so I could enjoy more good music like this more often and not endure other terrible music a lot of my friends listen to.

  • Like a one-eyed cat peeping in a seafood store .Where do they come up with this stuff ? Loving it !!

  • I was raised listening to Big Joe Turner,Eddie"Cleanhead"Vincent etc.

  • This is a good song, sure, but EP turned this R&B song into a ripping bleeding anthem to love, sex, and life. His cocky announcement...that music would never be the same again. His explosive union of white country and R&B rocked the world. Only 5 of EP's 30 #1 hits were written by or previously recorded by a black artist, still Elvis drew from all music, always bringing his revolutionary blended style, Stirring comments like "Elvis is the greatest that ever was, is, or ever will be. Chuck Berry

  • great music

  • Look at the dance the announcer does from :17 to :25...... now that's boss!

And I've yet to find a rock and roll vocalist that's on Big Joe's level of cool!

  • awesome!!!!

  • ça c'est le vrai r&b.actuellement on associe des artistes au r&b?

  • Respect 4 this song. ^^

  • can someone tell me the song were he speaks bout' his women having a mess undernieth her dress

  • big joe is cool, BUT, elvis' version is more edgy, cool, punkish and overall kicks joe's butt every day and twice on sundays. elvis rocks harder and cooler, way cooler, and elvis has that punk rocker edge that joe cant touch.

  • @bradrhuskers Elvis Presley is a soul-less, commercial, poptart.

  • @organikness Well you know zero about music. James Brown said "Elvis and I are the only true American originals." Chuck Berry said "Elvis is the greatest that ever was...is...or ever will be." Little Richard said "Elvis is God-given, there is no other explanation." Mick Jagger said "No one, but no one, is his equal." Jim Morrison said "Elvis is the best. The most original." Bob Dylan kissed the ground where Elvis recorded his first song. Lennon said... Ya know, I could go on all day long.

  • that's music!!!!!!!!

  • ‎"I'm like a one-eyed cat, peepin' in a sea-food store"

    - possibly the greatest rock n roll lyric ever!

  • I saw him perform just before he died. He was fat, toothless, crippled and very sick. But he still could sing and capture an audience better than any of these so called "American Idols."

  • @rjmins You talkin bout Elvis or Big Joe?

  • Love this song ^_^ At first I was looking for a different version of this song that I listened to in 'Clue' But I like this version better :) Love Big Joe XD

  • This, as they say, is the shit!

  • Happy birthday Big Joe!

  • This has notting to do with Justin Bieber only thing its also music !!

Please stop talking about him but about this time and music.

  • 28 people got shook, rattled, and rolled as children

  • what year was this? its so magnificent how the evolution of the televsion change

  • Justin Beiber? HaHaHa HaHaHa. Out of respect for real talent, his name should not be mentioned on the same day we're talking about Joe Turner! It's very disrespectful.

There is no comparison. None! Big Joe Turner has more talent in his little toe than a room full of Justin Beibers. Ha!

  • I'm fairly certain this version he's singing is also edited. The first verse is supposed to be "Get outta that bed/Wash your face and hands" , but I could be wrong. either way, amazing amazing song

  • my mother: what's justin bieber?

  • cool and wicked this

  • Who is Justin Bieber??

  • The 18th of May is the hundred anniversary of the MIGHTY JOE,S birthday in the Uk it will be celebrated in all the 50,s rock and roll mags the nightly/ weekly record hops the annual RNR week enders from the Hembsy big one to the Rhythm Riot at Camber Sands the Great Americana festival, in Spain and in France i hope the states will do something

  • Great dancing music, not like today's noise

  • @3819darien dancing has completely changed since this time, so the music matches it. it's all about perspective.

  • I'm 12 and I really hate the music of my generation. My classmates listen to music like Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga. I think this is sooo much better!

  • @harrygstewart You know your history unlike your classmates maybe they will catch up one day.

  • BIG JOE TURNER, SURE COULD SWING, SHAKE IT MAN. colindaleradiosutch

  • @colindaleradiosutch - AMEN to that! This is MUSIC based on talent and skill! No electronic pedals, buttons, bells, whistles or any other of that bullshit! God bless R&B forever!!!

  • reminds me so much of my dad.....:(

  • Times when world was a better place.

  • Classic.

  • This is just plain nasty. Gotta love it. I was amazed the first time I analyzed this. He's looking at her hairy mess through her skirt. hahaha Badass.

And that's why there are other cleaned up versions by other artists, which help direct the song to mainstream and more conservative audiences.

  • Dude looks like a big pimp!!!!

  • SO EPIC!!!

  • I don't really know why people are constantly having a pop at Justin Bieber, the only thing I can think of that they are slightly jealous that he is 16 or whatever but making millions of dollars and movies and people like "TheYoungTurds1" is just some little wanker making silly comments on YouTUBE.

  • yeeeeah swing it!!!!!!

  • @anyothername19 This is my point about the climate of the times. Many white cover our music and made more money on them than we did, Elvis took it and was crown king. this goes on today. White artist have all but taken over the blues. And what makes it so bad is that black blues artist have embraced them. When I listen to B B King's bluesville on XM radio I hear more white artist than blacks. Our music has been reduced to rap.

  • @lncshelt that "we" did, what crap. what have you written or recorded? I know that often non-black artists, writers, and recording companies were stuck with the same limitations by society for their creative output. And often they were the ones that saw or created opportunities, either for social/moral reasons or financial gain. I got here via wikipedia about Bill Haley and the Comets, and it was the rockabilly version that made this version more successful. That's arranging, not thievery.

  • YOU GO JOE! We grew up on this song in San Francisco. THANK YOU JOE! WE STILL LOVE IT TO DEATH! ROCK & ROLL FOREVER!

  • Along with Shake Rattle and Roll, my other favorite Joe Turner tunes are Flip Flop & Fly and Honey Hush which I remember from my childhood days. Bill Haley’s cover of Shake Rattle and Roll didn’t measure up to Joe Turner’s but it did sale more copies because of the climate of the times. But we African Americans knew what time it was.

  • I knew Elvis, He was not racist.

  • @lncshelt Oh! He just took our music and was named the king, lol.

  • His eyes are creepy.

  • ohhh yeeaarrrr !!!!! fuck pop musik!!!!

  • Peculiar that Joe sings the words of the cover version of Bill Haley: "Get out of the kitchen wash your face & hands" instead of the original "Get out of the bed" . I presume one couldn't sing such line way back on American television.

  • @jon76398 FY I Elvis was against racism, and second you don't know the first thing about rock and roll, because all artists back than made their own songs. People mention elvis because he was the first to make the song famous.

  • Ok, I thought a white band sung this song. Surprise, it's was sung by a black man FIRST! Typical of the shadiness back then. I want a refund itunes, I dot duped, lol.

  • @NycBeauty

Well i also though the man who originally sang "Kansas City" was white but he's not!

  • the next person who mentions beiber i will personally come to your house

    and kick you ass

  • @oxamanda93xo do you mean Justin Beiber? :D

  • This must be the original got to be as i don't think he would cover most Blk acts are original they made it and had it it came from them all the big men was around from the start like Fats D,chubb C,Big Joe, and they all had a good voice he never bovered with the guitar prop like EP and BHailey as he could dance thanks.

  • The first time I heard Big Joe Turner was on KLIP 1220 on your radio dial in 1961.

  • oldies win

  • elvis was a racist nothing more he stole songs like the average white person why do people keep briging him up

  • @jon76398 The old "Elvis was a racist' and "stole" music myth never dies..hahahaha Learn something about Rock and Roll history will ya?

  • @rbound827 I am no fan of EP...to say he was racist is just plain stupid.

  • @rbound827 Come on, i am no fan of elvis..but to say he was a racist is just stupid..what proof do you have that he was?

  • good thing about the 40's and fifties is that all the swing and rockabilly sounded so similar you could always be assured the song was gonna be good

  • great quality, can anybody put a year on this?

  • @buffalobilly its at harlems apollo theatre 1954

  • If anyone has any info on Joe Turner vinyls, please PM me. I have some and need to figure out if they are worth anything or not!

  • "Chains of Love"; one of the greatest blues songs of all times. Check it out!

  • oohhhh maan... thet`s RnB

  • It was sax solos like the one here that inspired me to want to play tenor sax back in the early 60's. Good Stuff.

  • My mom used to wake me up with this song every morning except she changed the words to "Get outta that bed"

  • The beginning of rock and roll. Even if most do not know it.

  • what a voice! And its so effortless for him!

  • The Paul Williams band did a good job acompanying Big Joe Turner.

  • i think his vocal style influenced a lot of punk and hardcore as well as rock.

  • Good job!

  • Jus look at that bass player TEAR IT UP !

  • This was in the 40's when all of the Black musicians were actually creating Rock and Roll and didn't even realize it. This was one of the first rock and roll recordings.

  • Just revisited and saw 628,000 viewsof this BJT classic...WOW!!!! The guy was a Master Shouter of the Blues! He swung the Blues like Bobby Orr played hockey!!

  • Thats still my kind of music. Shook, rattled and rolled thru the 50's & 60's. still at it. click here.

  • Look like Timberland. :s

  • @gladir360 that would be timbalan yo

  • Excellent!

  • this is great but i wish the picture and sound were in sync.

  • What year was this filmed?

  • THIS TYPE OF MUSIC ALONG WITH A LITTLE R & B AND DO-WOPP WAS GROWING UP IN THE 1950's THE BEST TIME IN AMERICA.....

  • great R&B

  • This man was an R&B genius! Fuck Justin Beiber

  • @TheYoungTurds1 I think Justin Beiber can top him in a dance off though!

  • @TheYoungTurds1 Enough of the Justin Bieber comments!! Just about every good song has a comment talking about how its better than Justin Bieber..WELL DUHH It's better! What is your point by polluting all these great tribute videos with justin bieber ??? just enjoy the fucking music!!

  • @psychedelicbluesdiva i had enough of that little creep. even my dad knows who he is and that's just retarded.... fu*k that kid, this is music!

  • @psychedelicbluesdiva You've just mentioned J. B. 3 times man!!! :D :D :D

  • @psychedelicbluesdiva i agree with you. i know jb sucks, but when ppl mention todays artists like justin bieber, rebecca black, jonas brothers, etc... on this page even if its against them. it just completely ruins the video

  • @billslover90 Just like that.

  • @billslover90 haha the irony of that comment

  • @psychedelicbluesdiva - What is our point? It's OBVIOUS what our point is - that bieber sucks, that he's just a trend, etc. And, by the way, I enjoy the fucking musis - AND I make beiber comments...the two are NOT mutually exclusive. Duh. Now, stop polluting this video with your unnecesary comment.

  • @psychedelicbluesdiva Never heard Bieber sing, certainly don't care to, but he played basketball (All-Star Celebrity game) pretty well for a little twerp. I've never compared older pop to contemporary, too obvious.

  • @psychedelicbluesdiva

    FUCK YOU AND JUSTIN BIEBER!

  • @psychedelicbluesdiva preach !!

  • @psychedelicbluesdiva Well... Ironically (and thanks to you), the top comments of this video are both about Justin Bieber.

  • @TheYoungTurds1 - yeah, I can dig where you're comin' from with the Beiber comment. However, I'll listen to anything that has a rockin' hook even if it is bubble gum crap. I just bet though, that Justin Beiber has no idea who Big Joe is. That's my biggest complaint... know your history kids! I knew who Fats Domino was when I was 7 and Fats Waller when I was 17 and I keep looking back every day for more history. I dig them Keerazee cave man tunes Jackson!

  • @TheYoungTurds1 R&B? more like boogie woogie

  • @TheYoungTurds1 you WOULD COMPARE THOSE TWO????????

  • @TheYoungTurds1 Why does everyone have to mention Justin Bieber in posts on other songs? Leave him alone and just enjoy the music.

  • @TheYoungTurds1 lol this is ther earliets form of Rock and roll.. RNB ?

  • Big Joe will live forever!

  • Somebody forgot to mike up the piano. Damn! I wanted to hear the solo.

  • I am thankful for this music and I don't give a **** what race they are. <3

  • 1:56 ¡¡¡la locura!!!

  • many have recorded this and many more will but this IS the definitive version

  • oh, Bernie Mac was the ressurrection of his pianists.

  • I love this kind of music, so guys if you dont have nothing nice to say then dont say anything at all.!!! <3

  • "Rock and roll would have never happened without him."

  • @DORSbauan Thanks this man along with Louis Jordan,Lionel Hampton were the pioneers for a style of music called JUMP BLUES music historians have said it paved the way for all forms of music with the exception of jazz, gospel that you hear today.

  • how about bernie mac on the piano?

  • no wider audience... whites were listening to black music in there homes... elvis just had guts to do what he liked along with sun records founder who was looking for a type of white that could sing and move like a black artist... struck paydirt

  • btw guys elvis never wrote any songs he only did COVER songs and that's it. Just making that clear. However, they said that once Elvis did your song you made it. He also made it rock oriented. He still plays great. Little tid bit, hound dog was originally a full length song and was done by Big Mama Thorten and it was shortened to three stanzas for Elvis so I'm like wtf?

  • Freakin Awesome! I love this kind of music and I wish radio stations played it more often. It's a shame to let music like this die.
