Self defence won't cut it as any weapons carried for self defence reasons are illegal. AR are banned outright but you can buy other types of guns. it is not that unusual to see a gun shop in the UK but they are for hunting. If the scene above was real life then the guy could be arrested for assault with a weapon (even though it was a pencil) and even attempted murder.
