I was reading some earlier comments... are you sure that the lead player isn't Tom Baker from Wisconsin. I just worked with him for two weeks and he said that he was in Buddy's band during '78. He also played with the Kenton band after Buddy's band. It really looks like Tom a lot, but I would like to know so that I could let him know about these videos. If anyone could clear that up for me, that would be great.
in my opinion this is buddys best band! his lead trumpet player is amazing (does anyone know who he is?) his second trumpet player is also amazing (does anyone know who he is?). i think that the lead alto is also fantastic.
how is it that all the great jazz giants have died.
The lead trumpet (second from left) is Chuck Schmidt. Grew up in St. Louis, graduated from North Texas State lab band program in 1977, toured with Stan Kenton briefly, and then with Buddy for awhile. Last known he was living in Dallas area.
I know Buddy's speed was off the charts but to say "all he does is rolls" would indicate a substance in your ears that's used to make candles. The DVD is called JazzIcons and if you are such an iconic musician, then maybe someday soon or in the next century all of america can hear the stylings of zzzFATxxTONYzzz.
I thaught you were joking, but it seems from your favourites that you`re not. In that case your just a youngster. As you grow up you will learn a bit more about life. Respecting your elders is very important as they can often teach you lots!
This is a missive for "Mr.cheemooo". I first met Buddy Rich in 1938 and knew him until his death. He could play anything he ever saw, or heard. If he didn't, it was only because he didn't care to. Drumming is NOT an athletic contest. Just enjoy all great drummers as "different flavors". :)
Drop the bomb means to hit the bass drum unusually and unexpectedly hard. It is usually done under a horn solo, or whenever the band is not playing loudly at the moment - so the effect is that it comes out of nowhere. The purpose is to raise the excitement level.
trust me....he was cocky, and had the right to be, he can just walk into a room with those rock heavy metal drummers that are here today and he just gives a look at them... they just leave the room because he was so godly
Agreed. I've been drumming in metal bands for years, and I know first hand that nobody in metal touches Buddy Rich. Lombardo, Hogland, Mounier... not a chance.
I don't know what you have against Buddy cheemoo, but it wasn't just his interpretation of the pieces and technical ability that made him so innovative. Look at his innovative styles, his technical ability. They're things you cannot do. Even GREAT drummers like Dennis Chambers, Neal Peart and Herb Alexander all aspire to be as good a Buddy. There's a reason for that.
I have seen of him and when he was teaching some guy to drum in some video he couldnt even explain anything technically, he really didnt know much about drums he just blasted away and tried to compliment the other insturments! He was basically just some average guy who could play a little drums nothing special at all not at all!
Cheemoo, what do you have against Buddy? Watch him play in a band and try and find any drummer who could play like that. The man is without peer, just ask Roy Haynes,Dave Weckl and Jack DeJohnette.Elvin was also a huge Buddy fan.Stop disrespecting the man.
I bet buddy rich had a basement at his home where he spent most of his day playing and rehearsing, he had to big an ego to mess up or not be at his best, aside all that he could have use much more practice and education he never leanred to read music in 50 years he was lazy and he did all the same solos in all vids!
I dont know how many times I have to say it I am comparing my self to rich but I am comparing him to other profesionals. There are tons of professionals that make him drumming look ametuar. My video is old Ive already gotten better but even though that one was less than perfect most of you on here couldnt do it without practice!
o yea and cheemooo, he didnt practice...you probably do practice, but honestly, i saw a vid of a 7 year old who out drums you. and u are in no place to speak of buddy rich like that.
yea dude i saw one of ur vids..all it was was banging pots and pans together and calling that music...like cmon now can u do a one handed roll? no you cant and i know you cant cause you dont play with a traditional setup in ur chops and come on now ur solo lasted less than 1:30....Rich did his for 20 minutes at a time. can u do that? no you cant and ur what 20? 30? Rich was 60 and he did that.
You resemble ur remark! All rich fans are idiots cus they think drumming has reached a plateau, anyone who thinks an art cant go any further is an idiot and since people think drumming has gone as far as possible with rich there idiots cus hes already been outdone!
im saying ur an idiot because your telling me hes mediocre and after watching your videos of you drumming, you have no right to talk about whos mediocre

Could it be Riche Cole? It looks like Andy Fusco to his left. Andy was the greatest lead alto player of all time in the Buddy Bands ...
obergsson 4 years ago
It was Chuck Wilson and that is Andy Fusco.
XxSaxCannon921xX 4 years ago
Thanks for the info .... Can you tell me anything about him.
Where was he from ... how long was he in the band? What happened to him after he left? I haven't heard of him before so I'm curious ....
obergsson 4 years ago
Google! Haha I never really looked into him; sorry!
XxSaxCannon921xX 4 years ago
Chuck Wilson is a NY free-lance reed player, currently on tour with Liza Minnelli.
Edinski1 2 years ago
No way! Andy is great, but I always loved the solos and sound of Ernie Watts, Richie Cole, and Art Pepper over Andy.

I'm not up on the lingo. What does 'drop the bomb' mean?

Would DTB (dropping the bomb) also refer to when Buddy would whack his crash or swish, look at his bass player and yell LET'S GO, PLAY !!
