I think the animators were just trying to be gross. In the original story, it was just a large monstrous worm which was implanted into her stomach to protect her unborn fetus from being aborted.

Nonetheless, despite not being in the original story, everyone remembers the Penis Worm from this anime. The Penis Worm makes a return in the live-action sequel, "Teito Monogatari Gaiden", and in that movie, it does what you would EXPECT a Penis shaped worm to do :)

Plot-wise, this scene makes little sense. In the original story, the whole point of inserting the stomach worm into was to protect the developing fetus of Yukiko that Kato had magically impregnated her with (or so he thought). In the live-action version, Hirai forces the parasite to emerge through magic AFTER Kato had left her pregnant.

In the anime though, Kato hadn't impregnated her yet before this scene...so what was the point of stuffing the parasite inside her?

This scene wasn't as erotic as I thought it would be. In the live-action movie made by Toho Eizo (creators of Godzilla), Kato took off his hand and got a woman pregnant with one of those worm monsters. Unlike here, the woman got it aborted in that other adaption.

One thing I was always confused about in the live-action is at what point in the film does Yoichiro have intercourse with Yukari? In the anime, that scene is explicit. In the live-action version, it seems to be just implied at the end, (Keiko states that Yukiko is not Kato's daughter, but Yoichiro's)--they don't actually show us the act. Is it supposed to be during the scene when Yukari is begging Yoichiro to kill her and he starts uncontrollably crying?

this was first translated by Streamline Pictures, a now defunct anime company started way back when by Carl Macek. When it aired on television it was all censored. The ADV release though, was uncensored, plus, it also had the original Japanese dialogue. Frankly, I thought the Streamline dub was just corny. Call me a purist but I prefer the original Japanese, the voice actors take their jobs more seriously.

That's the tragedy of the story. Yukari's pain makes us despise Kato even more. But the ending of the story reminds us that simply countering hate with hate results in nothing. In the 2nd OVA, Kato is punished...but he still returns. It's only until his hatred is stemmed when he finally is suppressed.

Whoa...first of all if I recall, Kato's not completely dead yet. He returned to wreak havoc again in "Teito Taisen" as well as in 5 or 7 other novels in the series. Also, in the live-action version, he's still very much alive at the end...in fact, it initially appears as if she lost the battle. Remember her relenting and dropping her head after plunging a knife into Kato?

We only know that she sacrificed herself through Kuroda's explanation at the end (Koda Rohan was present).

BTW, stardingo747, my post would still be valid if we considered Kato to be a creature formed of hate and cruelty. If Kato is the incarnation of anger and resentment, then naturally he would die after having his hatred "stemmed." So in effect, Keiko "killed him" by "stemming" his anger. A creature that was born on and thrives on hatred cannot exist without hatred..

The reason I'm having trouble accepting your claim that Kato has been "killed" at the end is due to two very obvious reasons:

1) Kato is clearly NOT dead at the end.

2) Keiko channels "Kwannon," the Goddess of Mercy, implying ultimate compassion and forgiveness. Why else would she embrace him at the end if it was not to display merciful compassion?

Remember mattiathekaiju, that was a hug from a GODDESS. Once Kwannon's power coursed through him, all his hatred was destroyed in the presence of limitless compassion. Since Kato is a creature who exists ONLY because of his hatred; without hatred, he could not exist and thus was defeated...temporarily.
