hello John. Please pretty please could you do a tutorial on Bowies Oh you pretty things?....I can only find 2 and they are both as clear as mud, no notes written out and impossible to follow....I know I could learn it dead easy if you taught it xxx
Awesome tutorial!!! It was hard to learn the intro part but after that everything else seemed a lot easier to learn. I haven't mastered it yet but there's no way I could have learned it without your tutorial. What are the chances of a Levon tutorial? I think that would be a great song to do
I've been playing piano & guitar on and off for 35 years. I've been studying this for months. Guess like the other 211,000 of us I can't get this, Seen lots of folks asking for the music (eltons yelllow song book :) It's the arpeggio in the left hand and the syncopation made clear to us who can't play by ear and need to be mollycoddled, just the first few measures, minutes 1 to 4 in a new video, never mind. How about a tutorial of I Need You by America, ya' know as a springboard?
@pianojohn113 I haven't been applying myself. Your protege pianoguygarrett's rendition is better than nearly everyone else's here, after yours, probably is THE best. The money you're not charging for these lessons will find it's way to you.
@theopapadop I don't have a transcription of this one.. the person who creates them does only the ones he wants to do, and on his own time, so I don't know which ones (if any) he will do next.
Let me tell you something. After I learned how to do the chord progression from "ballerina" to "in the sand" by watching you do it, I let out a mighty "Fuck yeah!" Thank you so much for this video.
From, someone who's been trying to learn this damn song for a long time.
I have a found some but they are all a simplified version of what you are playing! Do you know where I can get the version that Elton John actually plays?
@mcneelymolly You might try a book called The Elton John Keyboard Book. It's published by Hal Leonard. The transcriptions I saw were very accurate, although I really can't recall if this song was included in that book or not.
Simple yet very beautiful song! Thank you for sharing this tutorial! I think it's the right speed. If someone doesn't catch something, that's why it's a video... you can pause and go back a few seconds if you missed something... it's not that difficult.
@pianojohn113 ....Im struggling with some other rubbish tutorial, nobody teaches like you do hun, you GOTTA make one fast and upload it.....you must be THE best on youtube....xxx grovel xxx
Elton John plays the intro figure four times with a variation each time as he characteristically does when when doing a repeating chord sequence. No one seems to notice this as in every video I've seen here the player does it exactly the same all four times. Another little detail that everybody has missed is the left-hand eighth-note G that occurs all four times on the "and" of beat four just before the figure repeats.
@V301H If I tried to show every variation and note that Elton plays on every song, the tutorials would be 55 minutes long. I purposely leave out the minutiae for that reason.
@pianojohn113 I found the official sheet music for this and it is also quite different from the recording. I guess the only way I'm ever going to get this right is to keep listening to the record over and over. I've spent several days on it and it's starting to come together.
@V301H Dude your great. I know how to play like alot of songs by elton cuz of you. Hey, can you try to do crocodile rock? I have always wanted to play that ever since I saw elton live
@pianojohn113 Oh! Yeah, i know, i try to take the song by ear, but there's a lot of notes in the intro... Would be great if you do a tutorial for that :D
Hey John....loven the music here bi she's good lessons, i play myself mostly all celtic music on the piano...im starting to watch all your tutorials on here and very helpful....if you can find the time please pull all the stops on some Doors, Bob Seger - against the wind (really woul love to learn this one), but really anything by him, matt miglewood, how high is high enough, really cool piano in that u shouldlisten to it....buddys from my down he wrote and sang alot of good tunes, thanks
i have a request for a tutorial. ¨Tea for the Tillerman¨ by Cat Stevens. it's a pretty short song, but i can't find a tutorial, or even the chords, for it anywhere. so i would appreciate if you could do a tutorial for it. but if you don't know it or you don't have the time it's absolutely ok.
Hey, You are absoulutely the best piano teacher on the Internet, and probably anywhere :) I'm learning from your videos for a half a year. I don't want to take your time, but I can't stop myself from writing:
Joubert Singers - Stand on the word
Lenny kravitz - Stand by by woman
2 songs I would die to be able to play. The song by Kravitz is very beatlesesque :) Teh other one is also amazing.
Pianojohn, thank you for this wonderful tutorial! Such an amazing song, such an amazing lesson!! Is it possible that you could try "Crocodile Rock" by Elton John? :)
Hello again John, I have been through your lists and cannot find Great Gig in the Sky by Pink Floyd. I have tried learnign it using other tutorials but none can match yours, is there any chance of posting it?
I finished the Beatles " Because "...Im well pleased with myself lol xxxx
I played 'don't let the sun' (taught by you!) at a party the other night, and it went down very well! Learning this one now, another great tutorial. Are you a fan of skyline pigeon? The piano sounds really good in that one.
@flikmuth88 Fantastic, good to know your performance went over well. Skyline Pigeon: one of my top-5 favorite Elton John songs. Piano part is amazing in that one. The harpsichord version is good too, but the version he sang live in Australia with the piano was the best. Also, it's in E-flat, which is my favorite key.
I love this song and I'm excited to learn to play it, but it's kind of frustrating when you don't show all of the notes... like in the intro, you say the notes for the chords, but go on to play more notes connecting each chord and don't mention what they are.
@AmatistaZafira Usually the notes are just the chords broken up.. I try to name them where I can, but with the time limits it makes it hard to stop down on each one.
You are the best teacher in the world. My friends and family are so impressed with what i can do thanks to you! I was wondering if you could do a frank sinatra song called "fly me to the moon". I sure would appreciate it! thanks so much.
I just want to say, how much you have helped me with piano playing. My friends and Famly are amazed at what i can do, thanks to you! its really good, i just wish that you would show everything step by step, cuz u add in all these under notes that u dont teach and little things that make the song what it is. Just a suggestion to make thins a bit easier
This is exactly what I want to learn how to play! Thank you so much for posting this! But are there any tips to playing the actual accompaniment because I'm still not that good at playing different parts with each hand yet
Glad you liked it, XelaBH.. As far as learning how to play an accompaniment piece, it mostly just requires you to do it enough times until you're comfortable with it. If singing along is what's confusing you, try just menatlly singing it first, until it becomes more natural. Just be patient, because it takes time. You'll get it soon!
stop complaining. I thought this video was the exact right speed for the level required to play hits piece. Not everything is explained key-by-key, but i thought it was very clear by looking at him play, and some of your own basic piano knowledge, how you could fill in the gaps. If you actually are good enough to play this, you shouldn't need to hear where to put your fingers, what rhythms he uses etc.,
Yes, thanks, Apekooi, and I'll add to what you said here.. Elton John songs are far more intricate than most other artists from that era.. Several fills, adds, extra notes, etc. To try to explain them all would extend his songs into about 10 or 11 parts.. too much.
@Apekooi Well not every on eis good enough, to not everyone IS good enough to play at this speed....and no one else has a good enough video to try to learn it this way..
@Apekooi Well not every one is good enough, to not everyone IS good enough to play at this speed....and no one else has a good enough video to try to learn it this way..
Hey Pianojohn this is so awesome, you wouldnt by chance happen to have the sheet music for this song? it's kind of hard to follow you through video. Thanks!
Glad you liked it! I don't have the sheets, no, but I'm told it's in the Elton John Keyboard Book.. It's either a yellow or white cover, not sure which. Supposed to be a pretty good and very accurate transcription.
Hi John, just come across your videos and they look great, thanks for doing them - I've been looking for some interesting songs to learn that sound good on solo piano, looking forward to working my way through some elton stuff.
I'll second Jbergmusicman as well, if you know a version of I Guess That's Why They Call It The Blues it would be great to see - no hurry though!
Hey john i have a question. ive been trying to work on elton's song "I guess that's why they call it the blues" by ear and its a little difficult. I was wondering if you could possibly do a tutorial for it.
You have inspired me to play piano again.. The songs you teach are so very easy to learn and I am very highly enthusiastic about playing them.... Thank you so much!!!!
ive been ooking for a while but if you have the time could you maybe send me the name of the book or site on which you got it because most of the ones i find are easy-piano
Sheet music is fairly common, although I don't know how accurate it all is. You can check some digital sheet music websites, see if any of them has it.
Hi John, brilliant stuff. I've learned so much from you. Is there any chance of you doing the piano part at the end of Layla? That would be awesome. Thanks mate
Having a good ear is about experience. Children who have rich musical experiences, will always have "good" ears. Accurate hearing can be developed at any age, as long as we never ever stop encouraging children. In the same way we encourage children to read!!!
Wow I have waited and waited and waited to learn how to play Elton's music. FINALLY are these viseo lessons available on some DVD or something? they would be worth a kings ransom in gold, land and women.
i put little pieces of duct tape on the keys so i know which ones to play...that ALWAYS helps. just practice with those on for about a week or so, depending on how fast of a learner you are. when you feel confident take them off and presto...you've learned a song. yaaay.
You're the the one I learn I have been referring too when I'm not sure if I am playing the right chords. You are doing a huge favor to many. Thank you.
You are awesome and a great teacher. This does move a little fast. Do you have any recommendation as to where to look for basics as far as fingering and chord structure? Thanks

stop complaining. I thought this video was the exact right speed for the level required to play hits piece. Not everything is explained key-by-key, but i thought it was very clear by looking at him play, and some of your own basic piano knowledge, how you could fill in the gaps. If you actually are good enough to play this, you shouldn't need to hear where to put your fingers, what rhythms he uses etc.,
Apekooi 2 years ago 6
Yes, thanks, Apekooi, and I'll add to what you said here.. Elton John songs are far more intricate than most other artists from that era.. Several fills, adds, extra notes, etc. To try to explain them all would extend his songs into about 10 or 11 parts.. too much.
pianojohn113 2 years ago
@Apekooi Well not every on eis good enough, to not everyone IS good enough to play at this speed....and no one else has a good enough video to try to learn it this way..

Hey Pianojohn this is so awesome, you wouldnt by chance happen to have the sheet music for this song? it's kind of hard to follow you through video. Thanks!
funkytownbrotha 2 years ago
Glad you liked it! I don't have the sheets, no, but I'm told it's in the Elton John Keyboard Book.. It's either a yellow or white cover, not sure which. Supposed to be a pretty good and very accurate transcription.

Hi John, just come across your videos and they look great, thanks for doing them - I've been looking for some interesting songs to learn that sound good on solo piano, looking forward to working my way through some elton stuff.
I'll second Jbergmusicman as well, if you know a version of I Guess That's Why They Call It The Blues it would be great to see - no hurry though!
bitesomeone 2 years ago
Thanks! I have that song on the list, so I'll try to remember to include it on an upcoming set.

Hey john i have a question. ive been trying to work on elton's song "I guess that's why they call it the blues" by ear and its a little difficult. I was wondering if you could possibly do a tutorial for it.

where can i find the sheet music for this song? thanks
lazr666 2 years ago
Sheet music is fairly common, although I don't know how accurate it all is. You can check some digital sheet music websites, see if any of them has it.

Thx for tutorial. I'm just wondering which is better. Your video or shawncheekeasy video?
papercuber 2 years ago

Hi John, brilliant stuff. I've learned so much from you. Is there any chance of you doing the piano part at the end of Layla? That would be awesome. Thanks mate
helenindublin 2 years ago
Wow, I love these chords!
At 08:00 I would have called that an F6 rather than Dm7/F. Anyone think the same?

what grade should you expect to be if you have a good ear
shepardscane 2 years ago 2
Having a good ear is about experience. Children who have rich musical experiences, will always have "good" ears. Accurate hearing can be developed at any age, as long as we never ever stop encouraging children. In the same way we encourage children to read!!!

defiantly a difficult song but well worth learning.

Wow I have waited and waited and waited to learn how to play Elton's music. FINALLY are these viseo lessons available on some DVD or something? they would be worth a kings ransom in gold, land and women.
tombaker1963 2 years ago
Wow you don't worry much about being sexist do you?
charcole18 2 years ago
i put little pieces of duct tape on the keys so i know which ones to play...that ALWAYS helps. just practice with those on for about a week or so, depending on how fast of a learner you are. when you feel confident take them off and presto...you've learned a song. yaaay.

nvm theres 2 ways elton plays it i guess..idk i like the other way better

This is a great tutorial, but having mistakes in the vid only makes it confusing. If your gonna teach a song on film make sure you have it right every time. thanks though it sounds great.
