  • its the LEDs that are flickering, this is used to save energy as well as controlling the intensity of the backlight.

this method is used in just about anything that have LEDs and that should be dimmable.

Look at the LEDs of modern cars and point a camera at them and you'll see that they flicker the same way

  • Buy a Thinkpad.

  • 67 people work for Apple.

  • Could it be that one of them has a better processor and is probably a slightly newer edition?

  • @A135S4656

Processors don't affect the quality of the backlighting.

  • @Draknfyre I know the processor doesn't.

But I meant Also, one of them might be a newer edition MacBook so it's probably got a better monitor.

  • @A135S4656

Apple has been known to be caught using subpar components before, and when found out, they try to hush all news of it. So if the other one was using a poorer-quality component, it wouldn't surprise me.

  • Additionally. When you sign up for Apple's forums, you agree to their terms of use. This is probably a (non)issue that they forbid talking about somewhere, or they simply reserve the right to delete whatever they damn well please. I'm not saying I agree with it, but I'm saying you have no room to complain when you agreed to let them do it.

  • Apple doesn't make the displays. Most of the parts in these computers Apple buys from another supplier, they just put it together. These are backlit with LEDs, looks like one flickers when it's dim. The dimmer probably works by decreasing the voltage supplied to the LED, and this dimmer is probably not very stable on the right one for whatever reason. This video demonstrates clear misunderstanding of the hardware in question.

  • this is because the dock, one of them you hide the dock and the other one you didnt, and the macbook smart enough to recognize that !!!

  • mine does this too. it's a bad lcd inverter.

  • I just tried it on my Macbook and it doesnt flicker at all, its a bit over 1 year old

  • I currently own a Macbook 13' Unibody, and when I do lower the brightness it flickers. I already got it exchanged when i first purchased it but its still doing it. I have insurance should I take it to an apple store and get it replaced?!

  • @raver42008 yea, mine doesnt do that, same as urs, 13 unibody 2 core

  • @raver42008 yeah free repair why not.

  • what does "deleting threads" mean

  • @nrgshkl093 On forums the different conversations are called threads

  • Apple never had any videos like this removed.

the machines are as close to perfect as a machine currently gets. period.

  • i've had my mac for over a year, and it doesn't do this....

  • @shadowchicken i never had problems either even with my old g3 imac and 08 macbook.

  • gay video

  • @ArnoldSchwarznigger

macbook pros are by far the best computers on the market.

  • @aimforchrisss The is a very subjective statement. Apple is a good major brand that has created a highly simplified GUI and because they make the Hardware and the OS there are no incompatibility/setting malfunctions. However, in terms of the best computers, I would argue that a home built computer can far outperform a Mac in both performance and customization. Granted you said "on the market. In that case i encourage you to look at Doghouse systems. Their computers are powerful machines.

  • @ArnoldSchwarznigger fanboy much? and i wouldn't be talking with a shitty ass user name like that.

  • @111whitepony111 Arnold's gonna kick your pony ass!

  • @ArnoldSchwarznigger wow. how clever. exactly what i expected. peace bitch.

  • 11 years on and they still cant make a good laptop screen

  • @centuryman007 sorry, new macbook pro's led screen beats any other.

  • @cowsrock94 LOL its not full LED its LED backlit only .

  • @aniketroxx So? 99% of "l.e.d" displays are just l.e.d backlit. Its still an impressive display. also, I didnt mean the whole screen was l.e.d, just a typo.

  • holy shit that looks annoying. there is no way in hell i could look at that monitor for more that 12 seconds without having a fucking seizure. and of course apple wants to squash the story, it wouldn't be very "cooperate" of them to actually admit they're not 'perfect'

  • Also, why is this relevant? That could be why it's censored.

  • Please provide evidence that Apple is censoring videos like this.

  • @AbsalomPitchingfork I really do not believe Apple would be censoring these.

  • @coolfly005 How long have you worked for Apple?

  • @G0tm1lf I don't work for Apple...

  • @AbsalomPitchingfork It happened on the forums, Apple kept deleting threads where this subject was raised. If you're looking for evidence, they were deleting it. That's the whole point.

  • Did Apple censor this video as well? It's not working for me.

  • google this "Apple confirms death of iPhone worker in China"

    fanboys!

  • Wow.

My abused Gateway doesn't have this problem... At 60Hertz. I'm surprised you have to raise it to 75 Hertz in order to stop the flicker? How much do these macbooks cost again? Thousands?

The more expensive it is, doesn't mean it's always good. My laptop was barely above the 500 dollar mark, with shipping, refurbished. I hate seeing kids looking at Macbooks like it's the best shit ever, and think if they compromise for anything lower, it's bad. BS.

  • pcs are cheap plastic BS made with slave labor in china so shut the hell up

  • I was just saying I couldn't afford an over-priced laptop that didn't give the same quality as my 500 dollar laptop, during college. My parents were in debt on and off and they didn't even pay for the laptop. It wasn't because I supported slave labor in China. Hell the fuck no.

    Calm the fuck down.

  • If your parents were in debt, why did they bring you into this world? They obviously can't afford any kids.

  • They started out pretty good, but then shit happens.

People have this bullshit misconception that parents should be rich or something when they have kids but you can be really rich and then hit the bottom.

  • That's true. Well, I don't think being a parents required being RICH, but I definitely don't think that all these poor people around the world should be having kids. I think at least 40-60 grand a year should suffice in raising a kid and giving them everything they need.

  • are you blonde by any chance?

  • I dunno about the computers, but iPods are made in China. Stfu :)

  • nope ipods are assembled in china the parts come from u.s. and japan

  • They're still assembled there jackass.

  • yes but apple is very generous in pay they pay all workers minimum wage equal to the us minimum wage while dell pays $1 an hour

  • Show me the article that proves that, or stop being ridiculous. :)

  • @muk546 That ....is an outright lie. Dell and Apple both use the SAME factory, the workers are on the SAME pay ....the difference is when you buy apple ...your paying not for product ...not for packaging ...but for brand, like adidas and nike with all thier border-line slave labour.

  • @temporaldisplacement You're also purchasing your Mac more so at cost, rather than subsidized via bloatware on most prebuilt PCs.

  • @Atlink Quite so ...and bloatware can be handled by anyone.

  • Considering that macs have the same components as pcs now that means your mac must have been made by slaves also. Personally I have my Pc and my Mac side by side and they both have their goods and bads. I have had to spend more on parts for the mac which has broken down a few more times then the pc that were litterally identical to the pc version but just had differnt firmware. Both are good and slave labor or not thats my two cents.

  • smartest thing ever said about macbooks...

    ever

  • To everyone here:

The brightness was low to emphasize the problem and so it would show up on video. It showed up before that low a brightness is achieved.

Apple settled with me an upgraded me to a Macbook Pro. They never acknowledged the problem, though.

  • WOW THIS IS SOME CONTRAVERSIAL SHIT RIGHT HERE.

.... It doesn't matter, no one is going to have the monitor brightness that low and you can probably solve it by changing the refresh rate. w00t.

  • Useless video.

  • im trying to get a flickerless macbook pro 15" since november 2008. had so far 8 machines...6 of them had this flickerissue!!!!!

  • You must have a Fake MBP

  • That is the screen refresh rate. You can see it if you record it using a camera on a normal screen and the refresh rates are not synced on the camera. For instance, an interviewer over at me took about half an hour to match the refresh rate of his TV camera to match my screens (75) refresh rate, so there would be no flicker.

  • How do I adjust the refresh rate on my eyes so I don't have this problem with my Macbook any more?

  • It's easy.

Open System Preferences, from there, go to Displays, and go to the Display tab, there should be a drop down box called Refresh Rate, put it to 75 hertz or more, it can depend on your screen. Raise it in order to get rid of the flicker.

  • Hmm... reread my comment with your sense of humour switched on. And I can't adjust the frame rate on my macbook; the dropdown is marked N/A.

  • With, my sense of humour? Sorry, you lost me.

And you should contact the people on Apple's forums for help in that case. It works just fine for me.

  • how do you fix that problem?

  • boring video

  • deeper blacks ( or dark colors ) and vivid colors with new LED backlighting

  • Could be a problem with the power adapter causing the 50Hz (or what ever) to project itself on the screen. Perhaps you could try out another adapter? Just trying to help :)

  • so what does that mean?

    Is it bad?

  • it means that if your screens brightness is low... its horrible for your eyes... like me... my eyes USED to be perfect ... now i need glasses... trust me... it feels horrible when you need glasses !

its soo fustrating !! its like looking threw a transparent plastic bucket... WHICH isnt clear.. its really blurry !!

  • That means you need new glasses, dipshit.

    Glasses make you see CLEARLY.

  • i didnt say my glasses makes it look like a transparent plastic bucket SON OF A FUCKER!

pay more attention to what your read smart a s s!

  • I took that a bit far, didn't I.

Well, I've been wearing since I was 7. I know how much they suck.

  • mine is perfect. I'm just too good

  • My old MacBook Minor did that, and I thought it was just because it tried to commit suicide by throwing itself down the stairs. (My cat tripped me....) It is nice to know it would have happened anyway.

  • ahaha

  • the flicker happens to mine to!!!!

I brought it to the apple store but it wouldnt flicker for the guy!!!!!

  • is the angle on the screens the same too ? it doesnt look like that..

  • what gives

  • I like Apple, but it's Linux FTW.

  • llol, great !

  • so what happens when it flickers?

  • Hopefully, they are working on your brain too!

  • Hey !! They DID! A trillion core, with 16,000,000x9,000,000 HD resolution vision!

Hated my post eh? You thought I was talking about you?

    Post your own videos...

  • Well, I have some Halo-montages on another account, so blow yourself.

  • Theres a difference, ones black and ones white.

There are a few internal differences between the two laptops.

  • @jackcday Actually, no, they were generational differences. One was top of the line before the generation with a black release. I've done my research on this.

  • "This video keeps getting threads deleted... I wonder why?"

Are you suggesting that YouTube is in cahoots with Apple?

  • Threads on Apple's website, not youtube videos. The topics in the forum with this video in them are deleted.

  • Ah, thank you! That makes much more sense. I was reading those 2 sentences as if they were separate/unconnected statements. I was concerned that ShockTsunami was extremely paranoid! lol!

  • I know this is off topic but, i hate iMacs. I like MacPros And Powermacs. I CANOT have a pc i can't upgrade!

  • I sold my macbook because I don't want to worry about the overheating as well as a flickering screen. It was covered by applecare, but I've read bad things about their customer service. If you're gonna spend big bucks on a warranty, there should be no doubt that they're going to replace something in a TIMELY fashion. Google "applecare sucks".

  • its power PC

  • nonsense/

  • apple censored it because their trying to keep their name up

  • I bought a MacBook and the screen died a week after I got it. I can't complain because the apple store swaped it out for a new one and I was on my way. Great customer service I must say!

  • Linux And OS X all the way baby

  • well said :D

  • someone can convince me why should I buy a Mac or keep my PC? PLEASE! Im COMPLETELY LOST!!

  • No or Rare Virus/Spyware infection on a Mac. Faster, safer and much more stable OS, based on Unix. Hardware is top notch! (almost no plastics in many models. they use high quality aluminum) Very easy learning curve if you never touched a Mac. You will learn the basics in 2 hrs;) Windows is the past

  • thanks but I never got spyware or virus on my PC, I mean, why the mac is good compared to PC, not the virus way you know?

  • No Spyware on your windows? Download 'Super anti Spyware 'program and you will be surprised! Well I changed last year and like you I had questions. Then when I tried it at the store I immediately saw that this is way better then my vista! so I got a Macbook. Year later, I got the iMac!:)

  • Because I never download any crazy things and I never get caught by a spyware. Well, I have a pretty weird antivirus I say. Its NOD 32.

  • And since you have questions about MAC that means you are probably fed up with your current computer!. If your computer is that good with no Spyware, viruses, blue screen of death, freezing ect, why do you want to know about alternate systems?

  • Well, its about programs, not the security systems, I mean. I got a BIG trouble with those basic Window Programs. Not the security!! I done a Virus Check. There was no virus. but I still got those program malfunctionning. Does Mac have those problems too? I only that a 1996 Macintosh have those problems.

  • Programs which malfunctions you mean? Yeah sometimes you will find some rubbish programs but mostly they run perfectly. Depends for what will you use the Mac for. Ex if you want games, please stay with your PC. Anything else the Mac has it.

  • It's good that you had virus-software that has successfully safeguarded your PC, but if you'd enjoy the freedom of using a computer w/o fear of viruses, and WITHOUT the hassle of being slowed down by oppressive virus software, go with the Mac. I used my Macbook Pro nearly daily connected to the internet for 1 1/2 years (no virus-checker, no firewall) before finally downloading some virus-checking software—just to scan the drive in case I had inadvertently acquired a virus. None detected!

  • I heard that hackers or pirates got interested to the mac and iPhone! You know that?

  • Too bad OSX is UNIX based!! OMG NO WAI!!

  • idiot its based off darwin which is based off bsd which is unix-like get it right you twat macs suck balls

  • I'm using PC with windows which is running and connected to internet 24/7 for 2 years now. No antivirus only router with with few forwarded ports. And OMG no viruses! You are dumbass. STFU if don't know the real facts. There is no major difference between hardware or sofware only the size of users brain!

  • you may be right

  • LOLZ your funny, viruses attract people with in majority. I.e Dickheads who dl porn by googleling. extended by Reck101101 comments, mac will soon have viruses when the popularity in mac rises(never will beat pc)

  • LOL, yeah Macs have a lot of catching up to do when it comes to viruses. I haven't found recent stats for PC viruses, but a 2003 article on sophos [YouTube hates the DOTs!] com said that there were 82,870.

On YouTube, I recently discovered a pretty interesting OS X "virus" (malware at worst) that takes advantage of the Macbook Pro's motion sensor, and makes the menu bar & desktop icons fall to the "bottom" of the screen, relative to the position of the laptop. Pretty funny!

    v=qB_K66mrZi4

  • i saw that video too

    wasnt that fake tho?

i thought whoever made that video just made it up and the virus didnt actually exist.

  • I remember reading that it didn't really qualify as a true "virus" -- more like something you can put on a friend's mac to freak him/her out!

  • They'll get you eventually... ;)

Best part about it? Apple will be completely unprepared.

  • what was the name of the virus scanner because im curious to know if i have any viruses on my mac or not.

  • It was called VirusBarrier by Intego. It was recommended by MacWorld over McAfee Virex, Sophos Anti-Virus, and Symantec's Norton AntiVirus in 2005. (I installed it in 2007.) I haven't done any recent research on virus software for Macs, however.

  • why bad ratings, this should be shown to apple, I'm getting Macbook in a couple days, I don't wanna end up with the same issues, currently running Leopard on my PC, SUPER FAST, cheaper then any Mac out there, but reason im getting Macbook is because its free :p. I choose Mac over dell lappy, jus cuz I already have a good pc.

  • Did you used iAtkos or Jas? or PearPC(I dont think PearPC is fast)

  • both of those suck...get linux.

  • Really? I gotta try man!! thanks for the explication!

  • Dude, 99% of the worlds servers are run on Linux or any other form of UNIX (think BSD).

  • I guess you're not in IT then huh? That statement VERY inaccurate. You'd be surprised at who runs Windows... including ones where security and uptime is absolutely critical. There are plenty of companies who rely on Windows and do so very successfully... it's their sole business. And yes you've probably heard of most of them... they may even manage your money.

  • Linux is just another OS (or operating system) if you don't know what OS means.

  • Do Best buy sell linux ?

  • They somtimes sell Ubuntu Linux on DVD, depending on the location.

  • just download whatever linux distro u want and burn it to a CD-R if u have one after all it's open source :)

  • k thanks, Ill check it

  • Haha nice, it's a joke right?

  • minus the crapware, sony makes the best laptops, hands down.

  • ever think the flicker is from the lights used to illuminate the screen. they are different from each other, and ever dimmer switch enabled lights in homes flicker... hence the new led screens :)

  • this is happening to me on a low brightness too but I have an ibook g4

  • This is from 2006 and now it's 2008. I'm sure mac has worked out most of the glitches on its product. I'm thinking about just buying to 2.2 ghz Intel C2D macbook with 1GB of RAM, and then installing 4G of Kingston memory which you can get for $110.00 online. I have a mac mini with a 1.6 ghz processor and 1GB of RAM and there have been no problems over 3 years. That's why I'll just take the risk and buy a macbook.

  • your just sad cause yours isn't a core 2 duo

  • Nice troll. I've got a C2D Macbook Pro now.

  • still inconclusive, would have to test lots of macbooks.

  • Three that I tested had this exact problem. And I know of at least 8 individuals on the Apple forums that consistently reported the problem, some with multiple Macbooks.

  • And it's a 2006 laptop. Maybe glitches have been worked out? Hopefully. I switched operating systems ~3 yrs ago and haven't looked back since. It's just so stable and for some reason, the computer nerds don't feel like messing with macs as much. If you put a mac through as much abuse as I have (such as dl-ing music from limewire) and find that there are STILL no problems, you'll realize how great the OS really is.

  • so youre saying the core duo flickers and the core 2 duo doesn't? uh

  • core 2 duo is on the right and is flickering

  • I do, since my blackbook is doing the same thing. Anyone with a macbook probably cares.

  • They're the same resolution, same OS, and same everything except for the hardware, which is my point.

  • that never happened to my macbook

  • Hmm... I don't think my screen flickers, but I have a dead pixel. What should I do about it? If there is anything to do at all, though.

By the way, I have a white MacBook with 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. 1 GB memory and 120 GB of space.

  • mmm yh m i dont c it

  • I have this flicker problem more frequently lately. I often

have dimmed display to save battery while in lectures.

I hope problem is resolved by Apple. My wife's identical

MacBook shows no sign of the problem thusfar.

  • I think the only resolution will be LED backlights in the Macbooks. As for people with the flickering displays, I'm not sure what they would do.

  • this could have been faked, all you would need is a darker background color.

  • How does that even work? I'm really curious what you think you know about this. I've been working in digital video production for a couple years now, and I'd really love to hear your amateur explanation for this throwaway comment.

  • shock: its..umm...a secret! i cant tell you!

    lol

    :)

  • ...Touche. You win this time.

  • my pc laptop doesnt flicker.. ha ha

  • Neither do my LCD, 2 CRTs, Macbook Pro, or any of my other devices now that I got rid of the Macbook laptop. What's your point?

  • His point is showing the limited intelligence level he applies in commenting on Youtube.

It drives me crazy when people in talking about mac vs pc, almost consider a "pc computer" as a brand in it's self..

  • The thing that is a brand in and of itself, is the Windows OS that the PCs run... it doesn't matter which company shoves the hardware into the box, they all run the same OS and the OS is what makes Macs special...

  • Yep. And you might be able to use more programs on the computer and play awesome games if your graphics card and memory are top notch, but you have to be extra-responsible with dl-ing free software online. The whole OS will spontaneously freeze up, you've gotta pull the battery out or unplug it. My dad has to do clean installs from time to time as well in order to rid the PC of crap that slows it down. If you don't need a PC for special programs, it's better to just go with a mac.

  • so you get rid of a laptop because it flickers alittle???
