haha the first time i saw this video i honestly thought he raped the star spangled banner (in the bad way) but now i realize that he was doing the bomb thing and that is seriously awesome
@Macsk8ing the hole reason Hendrix is eleven respected is because he pioneered the sound of vai, van halen, etc. He's no where near as good as them though.
If you don`t understand what Vai is playing it might be because you really haven´t studied much about harmony but who´s problem is that? As the church lady would say: hhmmmm... maybe Satan, hahaha.
"If you don`t understand what Vai is playing it might be because you really haven´t studied much about harmony"
"Studying harmony" in the formal manner that statement implies is not a pre-requisite for having musical taste. Some people like Vai's music, some people don't, but to say that this implies a lack of musical appreciation is false, they simply appreciate 'different' music to you. Their tastes aren't better or worse than yours, just different. Capiche?
@blahdelablah I recently read your comment, I can´t remember the comment that someone published in order for me to write my own. I agree with you about people liking or not Vai´s music because my wife doesn´t like it at all.
@blahdelablah You know, musical appreciation does have something to do maybe not with formal study but with being exposed to it, (hope this is the right word, english is not my first language) In my home town, people hear just 2 or 3 styles of music which I dislike and when they hear some jazz or nice rock this is their comment: "Hearing this music is like eating a delicious stake". I don´t think that everyone should like the same music, I think I wrote my comment for someone.
Why do people have to compare guitar players, I like Hendrix and Vai, they are both great guitar players, Hendrix is part of the playing of a lot of musicians in our time, Vai has made emotional music too. For the love of God is a great tune to listen, in Tousching tongues, he made a great harmonic mixture with effects. That´s what Hendrix did in his time, contribute to expand musical knowledge and experimented with sounds and effects to take us on a musical journey.
playing the guitar is not only about speed but also about emotions, and even though it's remarkable how many notes vai can squeeze into a bar, it's quite hard to establish an emotional connection to his music, when you really can't tell anymore wtf is happening. summary: whilst technically quite unbeatable, he lacks the feeling hendrix has. this is like hardcore porn fucking vs. making sweet love, there is no better or worse, it's two different concepts.

Why do people always compare guitar gods. Hendrix was great, so is Vai, Satriani, Van Halen, so what if Hendrix played first, I never heard him do it, I jiust know that what Vai did was awesome. I don't think it is tat important who did first, cause if that were the case then there would only be two real guitar beasts: Hendrix and Van Halen. Then Zakk Wylde, Satriani, Vai, and others would be irrelevant. Greatness is greatness, period.
Who started it?? Are you kidding me? I hope you're not a guitarist, because EVERY guitar player should know- the MAN, the GOD of the guitar, and the whammy bar wizard...the ORIGINAL who adapted Francis Scott Key's Star-Spangled Banner to rock music...JIMI HENDRIX! (and in the 1960s, no less)
@comeonewtf you dont need floyd rose to dive bomb dork, are you aware that the first guy to play the national anthem with simulating bombs was hendrix back in woodstock, to protest against vietnam, you need to learn some rock N roll history, Rock wasnt born with nirvana, and metal with metallica kiddy
@el3ctricangel : if you want to see the chord shapes he's using search for Vai Star Spangled Banner Rock N Jock (MTV) - I think it was 1989. Outside of that, to get the dive bomb effects etc. the amp has to be extremely loud - that makes your touch on the guitar more sensitive and enhances the harmonics - he's basically hitting harmonics and pulling upwards on the Floyd Rose Trem to get the scream sounds-obviously it's "performanced based", not really something that can be ----CONT>>>
@el3ctricangel: CONT>> as I was saying: it's perforance based playing (i.e. emotion infused) - you could have this tabbed out, and practice it over & over, but unless you're putting the "soul" into, it will just sound like crap. IMO, this sort of thing cannot be tabbed correctly......the only way to emuate this style of playing is just to practice, practice, practice etc.... and LISTEN to music just as much. It's the EARS/HANDS/MIND/SOUL connection
@el3ctricangel : p.s. - I can tell you that the last "scream" he does before falling to his knees is an open string harmonic that he hits at the 3rd fret - probably the G or B string to be sure.....then he pulls up on the whammy bar. Gotta have a good guitar/very well set up, or it will surely go out of tune...which is probably why he chose to do the wild screams at the end ---- just my 2 cents ( been playing for 27 yrs)
@el3ctricangel : my guess is he's playing "dry" for this solo (that means he most likely hit the amp footswitch to it being just the guitar and amp signal, NO EFFECTS -xcept maybe a reverb on that channel of the amp- with a straight gtr/amp signal there is more "juice" which enhances the harmonic overtones) "divebombs" can be done in several ways : 3rd fret G or B strings or even the low E if you hit it correctly (see Jeff Beck for that), or the Bstring right above the CONT>>>
@el3ctricangel : CONT>> right above the pickup (bridge-neck pickups dont scream as clearly as bridge-uness your blasting it thru acouple of stack amps--i.e Fing LOUD!). This is why I say it's your ears/hands/soul....you practice enough and these tricks become second nature part of your repetroire. Some people use a Digitech Whammy Pedal effect to sounds similar to this, but to really know how to do it on the "fly" it's better to do it how Im explaining it...enjoy
sorry for the continuation of this acciidently clicked post....as i was saying do you know any of the osund effects so i could try to play it and just incorporate them soulfully while still sticking to the melody? i am pretty good at pouring soul into my work.
@el3ctricangel : Like I said: what he's doing is mostly based on VOUME (very LOUD)... the echo you hear is the hall/arena natural reverb he's playing in (a good exampe of that is The Who's Liva At Leeds - Youtube it and listen to the natural echo/reverb Pete Townshend is getting)- I doubt Vai is playing thru much "effect" on this bit, he's a purist when it comes to tone maximization (just guitar thru amp, like I said before) You really have to play and practice CONT>>
@el3ctricangel :CONT>>> play & practice with either a loud amp (30 watts will do if cranked) or a loud cranked amp w/an attentuator (Google it). Keep in mind that Vai is playing thru -most likely- several speaker cabinets, that expands the sonics and the "depth" of the guitar sound thru the amp...these sort of things you discover when you get the chance to practice with similar set ups...just work on accuracy & speed and this stuff will be easy to play
@hazor777 Yeah and I read everything you wrote, I didn't mean that in a bad way. I was just saying you talk a lot, doesn't mean it has to offend you. Take a chill pill man, I was actually pretty interested in what you said.
@Aaarrrggghhification Wow this is the first time i see someone speaks like this about steve vai. I recognize that if this is the one and only video or sound from him that you've ever heard, it might sound a little odd. But trust me, he is not the worst guitarrist ever.
@ThatGuyCalledPhillip he uses the ibanez now and even if he always used the ibanez bridges those are still a licensed version of the floyd rose that ibanez makes
@Macsk8ing =o blasphemy!!! everyone cares about hendrix lol. hes probably the most important guitarist that ever lived. if it wasnt for his crazy antics and imagination then music wouldnt have came along like it did.
@TheSkinwarrior Shit no, he has his bumchy club of fans who just watch guitarrist videos, and comment about them who don't even know about guitar, or even play so. Just like slash fanboys, its an easy concept.
@Macsk8ing ur crazy dude. anyone tht plays guitar knows a hendrix tune or plays a tune from someone tht was inspired by hendrix. Steve Vai was inspired by Hendrix, why u wanna diss a guy who pretty much everyone likes as a musician. Oh and if u wanna hear hendrix at his best in my opinion listen to machine gun
@Macsk8ing I also dislike Hendrix, he is so overated for me. At the end everythng he did woul've be done by someone else anyway. His only talent was to being born first
@jonathan lol you dont know shit about guitar man, it's like saying einstein is overated, someone would have found the relativity theory anyway, his only talent was being born first... Hendrix revolutionised electric guitar, he generated the guitar hero concept, no one played distorted solos before him, electric guitar was seen as an amplified guitar, it wasn't meant to distort and change the original guitar sound, plus his rythmic playing is a state of the art, wich inspired many, Vai included
@mouloudo You know what, not only I'm gonna say Hendrix is overated but all the famous guitar players are overated. Now because this is to complicated for you to understand it would better if you just shut up.
@jonathan5008 yeah that's why their famous, because they suck, and cant create music that appeals to a lot of people, inspire a lot of guitarists, unlike you who jerk off your guitar, and probably think you're the shit because you can play 10 notes per seconds in your bedroom, between 2 porn, and your momma tells you that what you play is good
@Macsk8ing that because your a kid... if you want to be good at guitar, you have to learn were it all came from, and respects the legends, the pioneers, you cant understand basicly every guitarist, if you dont get hendrix, since he influenced msot of them, it's like saying I dont like alphabet, but I love words, you cant create and get what a guitarist is all about if you dont get the basis under his playing... you play hendrix even without knowing, it, when you play a powerchord for example
@mouloudo Who said hendrix created guitar? Just because you're his stupid fanboy doesn't mean he created or invented guitar, I respect a lot of classical guitar legends, but hendrix?? hahaha pff, his only advantage was to be born first, but his music is a real piece of shit, you will never understand guitar if you aren't influenced by yourself and don't give a shit about other, so go get some lub on your hand and start rubbing your pussy dickhead.
@Macsk8ing lol you cant even read right you lil faggot kid, go jerk off your guitar to your momma, she might be the only one to like it, and remove that slash image of yours, he, unlike you, respected and idolised hendrix, you cocksucker
No...he just did what Hendrix did in Woodstock 1969. Remember Vietnam ??? He, Hendrix, was a saoldiers itself, so he did know the monster called WAR. We all know what history taught us later. This war, as so many, was an unjustified one.
Hendrix expressed his bad feelings about that disaster with an extended version of the anthem of the USA.
I think you're proud to be an US American, but pride an blindness is qitedifferent

@ceegee71 shut the fuck up nobody gives a shit about your stupid rant. I'll make sure your family is taken care of if you just fucking drown yourself accordingly.
First and foremost...don't be so rude and try to communicate and argue civily. I think that's the least to expect from a cultured human being; no matter what nationality you are.
It's OK, that you don't agree with me, but I didn't rant no way at all. I just mentioned some true facts; also pointed out that the truth sometimes can be wrong. I hope you got that...otherwise I must doubt your intellect.
@ceegee71 Nope. Thats not it. I just wanted you to shut the fuck up. Its a guitar video. Nobody gives a shit. Good luck with that dryed up flake of horse shit you call your life. I can't stand people like you.

@plasticpunch So? Who gives a shit about hendrix.
Macsk8ing 7 months ago
@Macsk8ing =o blasphemy!!! everyone cares about hendrix lol. hes probably the most important guitarist that ever lived. if it wasnt for his crazy antics and imagination then music wouldnt have came along like it did.
TheSkinwarrior 7 months ago
@TheSkinwarrior Shit no, he has his bumchy club of fans who just watch guitarrist videos, and comment about them who don't even know about guitar, or even play so. Just like slash fanboys, its an easy concept.
Macsk8ing 7 months ago
@Macsk8ing ur crazy dude. anyone tht plays guitar knows a hendrix tune or plays a tune from someone tht was inspired by hendrix. Steve Vai was inspired by Hendrix, why u wanna diss a guy who pretty much everyone likes as a musician. Oh and if u wanna hear hendrix at his best in my opinion listen to machine gun
TheSkinwarrior 7 months ago
@TheSkinwarrior Well I play guitar at the maximun and never was inspired by jimmy hendrix, maybe I'm the only original who dislikes hendrix.
Macsk8ing 7 months ago
@Macsk8ing maybe. i dnt really see how anyone can dislike hendrix but ok ur entitled to ur opinion
TheSkinwarrior 7 months ago
@Macsk8ing I also dislike Hendrix, he is so overated for me. At the end everythng he did woul've be done by someone else anyway. His only talent was to being born first
jonathan5008 5 months ago
@jonathan lol you dont know shit about guitar man, it's like saying einstein is overated, someone would have found the relativity theory anyway, his only talent was being born first... Hendrix revolutionised electric guitar, he generated the guitar hero concept, no one played distorted solos before him, electric guitar was seen as an amplified guitar, it wasn't meant to distort and change the original guitar sound, plus his rythmic playing is a state of the art, wich inspired many, Vai included
mouloudo 5 months ago
@mouloudo You know what, not only I'm gonna say Hendrix is overated but all the famous guitar players are overated. Now because this is to complicated for you to understand it would better if you just shut up.
jonathan5008 5 months ago
@jonathan5008 yeah that's why their famous, because they suck, and cant create music that appeals to a lot of people, inspire a lot of guitarists, unlike you who jerk off your guitar, and probably think you're the shit because you can play 10 notes per seconds in your bedroom, between 2 porn, and your momma tells you that what you play is good
mouloudo 5 months ago
@mouloudo Well...you defend Vai more than you would defend your mother. They are just...guitar players.
jonathan5008 5 months ago
@jonathan5008 I dont defend Vai but Hendrix...
mouloudo 5 months ago
@Macsk8ing that because your a kid... if you want to be good at guitar, you have to learn were it all came from, and respects the legends, the pioneers, you cant understand basicly every guitarist, if you dont get hendrix, since he influenced msot of them, it's like saying I dont like alphabet, but I love words, you cant create and get what a guitarist is all about if you dont get the basis under his playing... you play hendrix even without knowing, it, when you play a powerchord for example
mouloudo 5 months ago
@mouloudo Who said hendrix created guitar? Just because you're his stupid fanboy doesn't mean he created or invented guitar, I respect a lot of classical guitar legends, but hendrix?? hahaha pff, his only advantage was to be born first, but his music is a real piece of shit, you will never understand guitar if you aren't influenced by yourself and don't give a shit about other, so go get some lub on your hand and start rubbing your pussy dickhead.
Macsk8ing 5 months ago
@Macsk8ing lol you cant even read right you lil faggot kid, go jerk off your guitar to your momma, she might be the only one to like it, and remove that slash image of yours, he, unlike you, respected and idolised hendrix, you cocksucker

Way to eff up the national anthem...Satch wouldn't have done that.
TheGRxtremeGmrs 1 year ago
He did what hip hop singers do the the US National Anthem today. Why do Americans desire to do this?
swassontelus 1 year ago
No...he just did what Hendrix did in Woodstock 1969. Remember Vietnam ??? He, Hendrix, was a saoldiers itself, so he did know the monster called WAR. We all know what history taught us later. This war, as so many, was an unjustified one.
Hendrix expressed his bad feelings about that disaster with an extended version of the anthem of the USA.
I think you're proud to be an US American, but pride an blindness is qitedifferent

Hola amigo !
You are, seemingly, an absolute follower I guess.
Enjoy life...live well !!!

@ceegee71 Nope. Thats not it. I just wanted you to shut the fuck up. Its a guitar video. Nobody gives a shit. Good luck with that dryed up flake of horse shit you call your life. I can't stand people like you.
