I have Sony Vegas 8 and it is definitely worth having.
It has a lot of effects and transitions (ALA good for making YouTube Poops.), and also has very good 1080p H.D. support for .AVI and .WMV files, if that's of interest. :-)
I hear that the latest version, Sony Vegas 9, is even better than Sony Vegas 8. :-D
