  • Nice Video, I bought this same model about 20 years ago. After viewing your video i found it at my Mother’s house and brought it home. I'm going to try to get it working, i have been reading and watching videos in preparation. Thanks again

  • what does it mean when a IF tube when you first turn the radio on glows really bright then gets really dim when the tubes warm up and the radio does not pick up any radio stations

  • @loves2rock247 Most likely when the tube lights very bright and than dims down after it is warmed is because the tubes are wired in series, no power transformer.

As far as the radio not working it could be many reasons, no B+, bad tube, bad cap or resister, etc.

    The list gois on.

  • @old64goat I got some radio to come in it was the antana was not wired up but the radio is still very weak and the caps are not well labeled all they say is .05 200v and .02 400v what kind off cap is this if you need to see it it should be in my video about it its a Motorola c15 j25 all the resistors are also good thank you for helping me

  • @loves2rock247 Hi, As for the caps, .047 is the replacement for the .05.

You can use any voltage rating OVER 400 volts, I use the new 630 volt caps, you can get them from Mouser, AES, etc..

I can't help you with the model number because I no longer have any Sams.

  • nice.

  • Hi there, I have an old late 60's console tv its a Zenith . I am not having any sound nor picture yet tubes light up and the yoke on the tube lights up as well. Is there a way of testing these picture tubes? I have replaced all caps following schematic. I mainly work on old radios . This is my first tv.

    Thanks

  • Yes you can test the picture tube, but first see if you have high voltage.

CRT testers can be found on ebay, but if the yoke lights up...WOW you have a shorted yoke, I think you nean the CRT lights up not the youk...LOL.

    Bill

  • Yeah lol !! Show's you how much i know about tv's.. Is it possible the crt where the small board connects would light up and still have no picture? I will have to test for high voltage.

    Thanks

I am going to learn something here and i appreciate the knowledge Sir.

  • Hi Kevin, Yes just because the CRT filament lights does not mean the CRT is good.

Check for high viltage at the CRT button (Ultor), if the tv is a color tv you should have appx 25KV, if it is a B&W set you should have between 14 KV to 20 KV depending on screen size.

    Bill

  • Thanks Bill, CRT testers can be pretty expensive eh? I am gonna have to wait on it. The lady i recieved it from said the Tv sat for about 25 years. I want to bring it back to life. There is something cool about Tube amps and tv's

    Thanks again Bill

    Kevin

  • like your video your shop is has a lot of test equipment and your electronic knowledge is excellent you are sharp all the best thanks

  • @playone4me, Thank You very much, of course I no longer have the test gear or shop.

My head may come to a point, but I am nor SHARP...LOL

    Thanks for watching.

  • Nice job on your radio. It is such a great feeling when you bring a radio back to life! I've restored about 20 Fada radio's and one Fada TV.

  • Thanks fadatuberadioman, I agree, it is a great feeling to bring back to life a radio that has been sitting for many many years.

  • One of the best Tube DIY video's I've ever seen here on YouTube. Good advice, entertaining and crystal-clear explanation. 5+ stars!

  • Hi JoOngle, Thank you very much, I try to explain things like I would want to have them explained to me.

I knew an old guy who would explain things to me and why they worked and why you have to do it that way.

    He was an electrical engineer.

Guess I am from the old school.

    Bill

  • Bill, How long have you been in this hobbie

    Josh

  • Since 1959

  • Hello Bill, very good video, i am from argentina, i have a olds radios and my pasion is the old radio, excuseme for my english is not very good, bye

  • Hi Fernando, Thanks for stopping by.

    Bill

  • Great Video Bill I don't know anything about radio Chassis

    Josh

  • I'm currently reparing an old radio and i've got a 1.5cm hole through i have to replace about 20 rotten wires and 2 wax capacitors

  • I realize that these things are expensive, but it would be cool to listen Old Time Radio shows on CD/MP3 through these machines, I think I'll have to settle for an inexpensive imitation old radio!

  • Hi Mikikalwashizaru, No I got this radio at a yard sale for $15, I restored it and it is now on top of my computer desk.

I could never afford $100 dollars or more for any radio.

Check out yard sales, every so ofted one will turn up.

    Bill

  • hehe ....bravo

  • That's a super idea blowing up the schematic on a copier. Great idea to put the cardboard on the speaker. Thanks for the great tips. The radio works great.

  • Thanks again John, blowing up the schematic saved me alot of time, that way I only needed my 4X reading glasses and not a magnifying glass to boot.

Have a macular hole in my retna, central vision is very bad.

    Thanks for stopping by.

    Bill

  • wait what did you say to replace before using old radios? i have many that work great but i wouldent even know what to replace or what to replace it with? do you think you could make a vid to clear this up for me i would appreciate it!

  • Hi 1944johndeerel, You must replace the filter caps, the electrolytics first.

The radio should be plugged into a dim bulb tester next, that is shown in another of my videos.

    Thanks for stopping by.

    Bill

  • well ive never restored an old radio so i dont understand the purpose of doing this. and what is the dim bulb tester supposed to tell you? im just trying to figure out if this process would cure my screeching 48-472 philco, it works but has an awful screech when you first tun it on. my 48 philips works like new.

  • Hey great video presentation! your wiring looks really good, about the same as mine ^^ I learned alot working on my philco model 89, I'll be working on it again in the wintertime, I work on lawnmowers in the summer.

  • Coolbluelights, Thanks for your nice comment.

When I get relocated, I should have more electronic related videos.

BTW, I noticed you stated you work on lawnmowers.

I have a question, on my 8HP snow blower I have to run it half choke or it will spit and sputter.

PM me if you can help.

    Thanks for stopping by.

    Bill

  • sounds like your air fuel mixture is too lean. find the mixture screw, it's usually on the side of the carb (Not on the part where the throttle cable is hooked) or maybe look it up online to determine the right screw. there should only be 1 or 2. then with it running, slowly back the screw out until it runs smoothly. that should be it ^^ Good luck :)

  • Thanks, I will try that, my coleman 1500 watt generator does the same thing but I only have to choke it 1/4 or in other words 3/4 open.

    Thanks again.

    Bill

  • Nice BIll wish you were here to teach me that stuff i knowsome stuff but i doot know to much self taught

    sincerely your friend

  • Hi radioman56...Thanks for your nice comment, I must confess I am a tinkerer and don't know as much as you may think...he he

The folks on the "forum" have helped me more than you may know.

I only touch on the subjects I know.

I also forgot more than I learned and my brain is like a sieve, 100% goes in and 80% drains out...HEE HEE

    Thanks for stopping by.

    Bill

  • I am getting an ekco mod A.110. there are 4 pre set stations is there a way of pre set of re

    seting the pre sets .

  • Hi... I am sorry, is that a car radio?

If so, you "pull" out on the preset button, set your station with the dial than "push" that button in to set to that station.

    Sorry I can't be of more help....Bill

  • You can somedey to keen on collecting, and then you will understand for what I am talking :) You also can keep the original parts, if you decide to use them in future :)

  • Good job done with this chassis :) But the main goal in restoration is to keep all the parts original. That increases collector's value. This now is only working chassis with unoriginal capacitors and resistors... You can keep the original look of big supply electrolytics - you must extract all from inside and put in a new, smaller and more reliable capacitor. If you make it good, nobody will understand for this intervention :) I am too collector of tube stuff, but I am trying to keep it original

  • MilenHaskovo, I agree with you but this is not a "Strat" and is not going into a museum, it is for my own use and I am not a collector.

Besides who is going to look under the chssis?

As long as everything above the chassic is original that is what counts.

    Thanks for you coment....Bill

  • I very much enjoy these video visits to your electronics lab, highlighting some of your gear and projects. Thank you for taking the time to share. Looking forward to many more.

  • Muy buena amigo

  • That will be a really nice radio when you get the cabinet on it!

  • Your video is extremely interesting. Thank you very much. Nice job. Best regards, Mario.

  • Coast to Coast AM would be fun to listen on an old radio like that :)

  • Great job! Very much enjoyed watching your video and seeing your repair shop. Thanks Much...Ron

  • If a radio work, I have to open it and find out why it`s working.

  • Wonderful! It really is a fantastic hobby and I really enjoyed watching this. This reminds me of an RCA I restored, as it had many of the same problems. It lived in a barn as well. Worst part was the heater windings in the transformer were cooked, but I got it rewound fairly cheap. Thanks again!
