Threshing Wheat by Hand with a Homemade Flail

i found 6 pairs of these in my barn- the handle has a ball carved onto the end of it, same with the other, then they attached 2 pieced of leather in a link form, then used string to tightly tie the leather to the ball--- thanks for finally letting me understand what they are used for-

May I ask what you used to attach the cudgel? I usualy use two eye scews and a quick link.
