just buy a ASIO compatible audio hardware depending on your budget! that can be a stereo soundcard like the audiophile + a mixer with phantom power or it can be an external sound device like the rme or motu. firewire and usb 2.0 are the ones to prefer!

The software aspect is even more difficult. Searching for DAW shows that you can get LE versions of those even for free or as part of the hardware gear you buy!

Semi-pro software is cubase (win and mac) or the latest logic versions (mac user). Pro software solutions are nuendo, digital performer and protools (with hdsp cards)...

That's up to you. There is such a diverse selection of gear, equipment and programs out there and all of them work so differently. You just have to experiment and see what works best with you. Almost all of the programs offer a Demo version, so you can experiment with what works best for you without having to dish out the money on something you might not end up using. Many people tend to use Pro Tools or Cubase. I personally prefer Fruity Loops Studio and Reaper. Should check those four out :)
