Was there ever a better commentary on the ignorance, arrogance, and idiocy that ran rampant during the worst days of the epidemic? "How many people have to die?" Well, for President Reagan to consider it a priority, 25,000. The more I think about it, the angrier I get. I was too young to understand what was going on until years after AIDS became a fact of life in America. It's almost inconceivable to me that there was a point when the damage could've been controlled, but wasn't. It's horrifying.
This is one of the best films of the 90's of any genre. The human story is compelling and the film is also a biological/political thriller as well. The ensemble cast, especially Matthew Modine, is incredible.
I've been watching little bits here and there for my essay, and I'd really like to watch this whole thing after I'm done! It's a really interesting topic, and this particular scene is so powerful. For people who are interested, the documentary "The Age of AIDS" on PBS website is a really good watch! Powerful.
I've watched this during my trip at the NSLC Health and Medicine Program and while watching this with lots of negative concerns from most of the audiences, I have to disagree with them. Since I am a sophomore and being interested in diseases, this has changed my thoughts on how HIV/AIDS were found out. It made me think real hard after watching the movie and even made me start research even more on epidemics than before. The movie is simply amazing and this is considered my number one film. ^^
@animefans24 Considrering that HIV/AIDS was created by Merck and injected through "vaccination" programs, I no longer have any faith in anything our gov't says is ok, especially anything mandated.
What an amazing film! Certainly made me sympathize for all those poor people who died from this terrible disease. And all the people in Washington that did absolutely nothing to stop the madness thus the title of the movie "And the band played on". In the end credits of this film it says by the time Reagan delivered his first speech on aids more then 25,000 died from the virus...and roughly 5700 people received aids from blood transfusions
i read the book itself and watched this movie, makes me so sad that reagan administration didnt care, and didnt do anything much even people died everyday and doctors cant do anything against this disease call AIDS.only small group of people worked so hard to combat AIDS when this disease started to attacking on US soil during early 1980s.and i thought there will be no more tragic events like
peole infected by organ tansplant.but o my god! it just happened right now november 2010!
@Lee7676 Our gov't created this disease with Merck at the helm of 1st the vaccine in Africe for Smallpox and 2nd in CA for gay men giving the a "Hep B" Vaccine who didn't already have HIV.
Why is anyone surprised they didn't do anything? That was part of the plan. Let it play out first to see the damage. It's all part of the UN Agenda 21 Depopulation program going on. They test diseases to see the effectiveness in killing us and as a sideline, make profits from our illnesses. NO VACCINES!!
My husband was one of those hemophiliacs who died because of Aids. He died 12 years ago and I will never forgive those who are responsible for his death. I am really, really sad, that today nobody speaks any longer about the scandal of the infected and dead hemophiliacs, these boys and men, who were really innocent victims of moneymaker without any conscience. I will always cry when I see this film.
@kitty0756 exactly, people have forgotten that an entire generation of hemophiliacs were pretty much infected with aids. and the red cross, led by liddy dole at the time, didn't give a shit.
Thanks for posting this! One of my all-time favorite cinematic moments...And the Band Played On helped to shift perceptions, changed attitudes, and ultimately saved lives.
This was a great movie. People should read the book as well. The book was LOADED with info, this movie, while really well done, was only able to scratch the surface compared to Randy Shilts' book.
@nonnenja2281 - it's actually fairly true-to-life. According to Don Francis (played here by Modine), "... yes, I pounded the table and yelled at them, asking them how many people they wanted to kill. If it's five now, instead of having another meeting of this kind, I just said: "Just tell us the number. You want 10 dead? You want 20 dead? You want 100 dead? Then we'll make ... the recommendations today, and then you can just count the cases.' That didn't go down very well."
Money! Money! Money! Money! That is all people care about!!!! Jesus people were dying back then and all they worry about is something you can get real easily maybe not a million but enough.
I'm 29--I saw this movie in my high school film class. I never forgot it. My classmates & I talked about it for weeks, and it even spurned some really thought-out reports. I remember our teacher taking heat 4 showing the movie. This was a cornerstone in my sexual education. I agree that it should be required viewing/reading.
This film and this book should be required viewing/reading in every high school. We must never, ever forget the unfortunate souls who "died of red tape." We must educate the ignorant people who still think, as a doctor from the Pasteur Institue put it, "that a disease has a sexual preference." Dr. Don Francis is a true hero.
I agree about the idea of it being required reading. This film was probably one of the most important eye openers of its time. It is sad to think that even today there are so many, especially young people, who don't understand the seriousness of this disease, and put themselves at risk.
"How many people have to die and make it cost efficient for you people to do something about it? 100? 1000? Give us a number so we won't annoy you again until the amount of money you begin spending on losses makes it more profitable for you to save people than to kill them." This line cuts to the core of our healthcare values. Values stoked by our capitalistic ways. Healthcare is now on the horizon of our next meltdown.
I loved this movie so much I went out and bought it. A movie that did not receive enough recgonition. Thank u for putting this particular scene on Youtube.
HELL YEAH!! You tell them bastards! I'm sorry, but sometimes we NEED people like that, telling others off the way he did. Who cares if the get upset, angry, or whatever, the CDC were trying to save lives and those idiots were trying to save a buck!
That is a line I would be shouting to congressmen and any other politian who won't heed the warnings of the genocides in Cambodia, Darfur, Rowanda, ete. 'Give us a number so we won't annoy you again, until the amount money you begin spending on yourselves makes it more profitable for you to save lives then to let them die!'.
