"National standards set by FEMA require a storm shelter withstand the impact from a 15-pound two-by-four moving at 100 mph (speed that a 250 mph wind would carry a building timber)."
What horseshit. That's not remotely close to a good test of a structure's tornado survivability. They also seem to be trying very hard to avoid listing the EF rating they vow to protect against. It's very cute that the material "gives" when hit by a 15 lb projectile but try a 200 lb engine block or a 300 lb tree.
I would much prefer an underground shelter and be 100% sure I'm safe in there. You never know with tornadoes and the only for sure 100% way to protect yourself is underground. Jarrell, TX 1997, an F5 went through the town and pulled asphalt off the roads, I doubt a "safe room" would protect you from that.
@MitchPR08 Nope, sure won't. People need to stop being fucking lazy and oblivious and learn where their local community storm shelter is if they don't want to build a real one.
An F5 can pick up a freight car or a 15-ton combine harvester and throw it. What does DuPont think is going to happen to this one room after the rest of the house gets vaporized?
Also, how the hell is a 15 lb 2x4 delivered at 100 mph supposed to be realistic? Maybe from an EF1. Try a car at 200 mph and see how it does.
Good, but why not pay slightly more and get something more people resistant? This way your "storm room" and dbl as a safe room. Find a good way to stash a weapon in there just in case.
I don't have the file any more. Or it's burried somewhere. But might be able to find the original on DuPont's press page. Othe roption would be download the free software that lets you save YouTube videos. It easy to do. Thanks for viewing!
Each part is tested/passed independently, with at least 3 hits of 15 lb 2X4 hits at more than 100 MPH speed. Ofcourse it will take multiple hits and stand aginst hurricane force and driving rain.
