@him8913 Thank you, cool! No, I'd rather continue being a guitar teacher and a guitarist, but it's fun doing demos, and it's great to know that people are actually buying the Axe-Fx because of my videos ;-)
Your video is so good, everybody actually stopped caring about the AxeFX and enjoyed listening. :) Your selection of songs is like a music history class.
Song List: * Django Reinhardt - Minor Swing * Charlie Christian - Grand Slam * Arthur Smith - Guitar Boogie * Danny Cedrone - Rock Around The Clock * Chuch Berry - Johnny Be Good * Hank B. Marvin (The Shadows) - Apache * Dick Dale - Misirlou * Keith Richards (The Rolling Stones) - Satisfaction * Beatles - Day Tripper * Ticket To Ride * I Feel Fine * Jimi Hendrix - Little Wing * Voodoo Child * Purple Haze * Hey Joe * Eric Clapton - Layla we need more characters for comments***
@ekinertac .. Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin) - Stairway to Heaven/Black Dog/Heartbreaker/The Ocean/Whole Lotta Love. Oh, and you forgot Jumpin' Jack Flash.. Yes, I agree, we need more characters :-)
@alphasxsignal As far I can recall, all patches were based on factory presets, but I tweaked them a bit, some more than others. The old Ultra model has now been replaced by the new improved Axe-Fx II, and fractalaudo release upgrades and new firmware for this regularly. Some of the presets can be used directly for specific artists or songs (the preset names will mostly give them away..), and on the excellent fractalaudio users forum there's a section for sharing and requesting patches.
Truly superb video, friend. I was hoping you would toss some Hendrix in there and I had my fingers crossed. He even had his own little section! Your collection is divine, and you truly know very well what you are doing. That might be the first time I've "Liked" a video since like 2008 haha. Good work man

Fantastisk Django-cover, elsker minor swing!

I have been wanting so badly to acuire the Axe Fx and in my search for quality videos, you have nailed exactly what one should look for in a unit like this....VERSATILITY! Not only do you demonstrate the plethora of tones this little monster can "handle" but you do it with such precision and for lack of a better word Mojo. Incredible videos you have posted!
@windsindicate Yes, all the sounds are coming from the Axe-Fx, some are the factory presets, but I guess most of them are modified presets or new patches that I made from scratch. Now I have the FractalAudio MFC-101 Midi foot controller, which I guess is quite advanced, big and expensive.., but when I recorded these videos I only had a simple on/off switch and a Roland EV-5 expression pedal connected to the two pedal outputs on the back of the Axe-Fx. You could also other brands, of course.
Very nice plaing Ketil, you seemed very comfortable playing the jazz at the beginning. It all sounds lovely and doesn't have that fake digital "sheen" that most modelling setups have, but to my ears it is still lacking the warmth of a real valve amp. You could still clearly hear that it was going direct so to my ears the revolution is still yet to come. :)
@James1Hiscox Thanks! You should try an Axe-Fx Ultra yourself, I think you would be amazed. I actually think that in a blind test listening to a miked up tube amp (or many different tube amps) and the Axe-Fx Ultra going direct through the same PA system you wouldn't be able to tell the difference.. But no matter how good this sounds, many guitarists will still swear by a real tube amp and want to literally feel the warmth of the tubes when they put their hands on the amp..;-)
@Ubbalubbamann Hehe, det er vel å overdrive litt, men tusen takk..! Har spilt gitar i over 30 år. Spilte fløyte i korps i min ungdom, og har spilt litt piano og trommesett innimellom, men på et ganske elementært nivå..
@DouglasRCC Yeah, BEP uses Dick Dale's original recording of "Misirlou" as basis for their "Pump It" (hope they asked him for permission..;-) By the way, Dale didn't actually write Misirlou himself either, it's a greek folk song originally.
I ordered my axe-fx ultra last week, it will arrive in 7 - 11 weeks =) i'll probably also buy the atomic power amp if i can't find a better power amp anywhere
absolutley jaw-dropping stuff!!! . .I loved it . .I went and got a big bowl of peanuts and watched most of your vids . . . great playing, technique, feel, tone . . . you are the Yoda of You Tube guitars , dude. I loved your Canon Rock vid and the peice you wrote for your folks, very beautifu, also nice use of the Variax on that one. Hehe, thanks! Well, I guess you could stuff a couple of tubes in there if you want to, but I don't think that would make it sound better ;-) By the way, I've just released my first solo album; "Axe-Files", using the Axe-Fx Ultra exclusively for all electric guitars; "no tubes were harmed during the making of this album!" :-) I'd really appreciate it if you would check it out. Btw, I just checked out Jess Lewis, yes, she is really talented indeed, thanks for the tip!
One of the best demos of any FX unit on youtube, by a truly professional gifted player... AxeFX should give you head for the service you have done for them..
as for the AXE effects unit , well :) when they put a few tubes in that thing thats when I'll buy one :)
My gifted brother please do a search on youtube for "Jess Lewis" she is 16 and you must hear her play!!!!! I think you will be very moved by her talent. I just wanted to share that with you because your such a fine player yourself.
I should have mentioned that I have owned excellent tube amps from Marshall (2555 Silver Jubilee), Mesa Boogie (Dual Rectifier) and Fender and they are great products but ultimately for my situation weren't the best solution. If I could go into an "A" studio at my leisure I'd probably want those but otherwise I'll stick with the Axe-FX.
@bigdavewilliams2000 Thank you for your very comprehensive and nice comments! You can find my presets at 4shared dot com, send me a pm and I can give you the link.
4 - Where can I download your Axe-FX presets? They are fantastic.
5 - Thank you for producing very insprirational videos. I've spent some good time in the woodshed since I've seen these. And Fractal Audio should pay you royalties or at least post to your videos. They are a fantastic demonstration of the Axe-FX in addition to being a fantastic demonstration of a versitle masterful guitarist that we are well off to emulate. I hope you produce more.
3 (Cont) - And don't forget about room acoustics because that will affect your recorded tone. And, And, And. Botton line, both solutions can produce professional results and work better or worse for different players in different situtations. For me personally, I have gotten the best results in my project studio twice, once while blowing my windows out with a fully cranked 6505+ and anytime day or night with my Axe-FX at reasonable listening volume, even with my son asleep in the bedroom above
3 (Cont) - and a TC Electronics G-Force. That is an awesome rig. But don't forget, you need to mic it up to record it which takes gear, time and skill. And you need to turn it up LOUD to get a really good tone which is often impractical in the project studio. And tube performance varies dramatically. The tone you dial in today may be very different than the tone you dialed in 3 months ago with the same settings. And tubes are expensive. And tube amps are heavy. And, And, And
2 (Cont) - those other products don't even come close. I'd be very surprised if some one with a good ear and actual experience using these products can come to different conclusion. The Axe-Fx has the punch and presence to jump out of the speaker and has a tight low end with excellent articulation. It is very realistic.
3 - The debate about the Axe-FX vs. a "real tube amp" is ridiculous. If you have the cash and are so inclined by all means drop $3k on a Mesa Boogie Mark V half-stack
1 - You are a guitar master. You morph from style to style effortlessly and nail the tones. They aren't always perfect (I think Master of Puppets is the worst offender) but in general they are amazingly accurate.
2 - The debate about Line 6 modeling or Guitar Rig or whatever vs. the Axe-FX is ridiculous. I have owned all of these products and without question the Axe-FX is vastly superior. Admittedly I have seen some tracks where someone got a great result but in general
@irishman013 Thanks, that's very flattering, but then I think you probably haven't seen enough guitar videos on youtube.. ;-) Anyway, I appreciate you're saying that!
@jeffdisario The Atomic Reactor FR comes in two versions, active or passive. If you have the passive model, you can choose between Atomic's own stand-alone mono block power amp (which would be the same as the one built in the active model) or another power amp of your choice. Or you could use Atomic's power amp together with another cabinet, of course.
@jeffdisario Yes, no problem, you can connect it to the normal guitar input or to the effects loop return if the amp has one. But then you should probably turn Axe-Fx's speaker and power amp simulation off. In my experience, though, connecting it to some kind of FR (full range) system like a PA system, active monitor, Atomic Reactor FR or similar (in this case with spkr and pwr amp sims on), give better results than using a regular combo.
Great demonstration!! Not the typical shred/HiGain demos that you always see. I actually just purchased a Pod HD500 which i'm enjoying at the moment. I would have liked to have purchased an AxeFX. It's just that they are so expensive.
Wow! Not only is this a great unit, you're a fantastically versatile guitarist. With that much talent and this awesome toy, you ought to smile more :-)
@xntrickk Thanks. Others have commented the Zeppelin tones also. My goal was to try to mimic the tone of the original recordings, but it's difficult to achieve the Black Dog sound, for instance. But maybe that's not so strange, if you know that Jimmy Page actually didn't use an amp or distortion pedal at all for that recording, he plugged his Les Paul into a direct box and gained up the mixing conxole's mic amp to get the distortion. And it's arguable whether that really was a great sound..?
Do I need to have a power amp in order to play the Axe-Fx? Or is there a way i can avoid buying a power amp and plug it into an interface (POD UX2) and play it through computer speakers. Thanks
Awesome pallete of licks to show the true magic of this device. I just got this myself a few days ago and I am totally hypnotized just by the presets.
@greatar I used the factory presets as a starting point and fine tuned them a bit, some more than others. But most of the factory presets are very good and can be used as they are, unless you're looking for a very specific sound (like I did in this case..)
This is probably the best demo of the axe fx. I'm glad you didn't spend most of your time explaining it and just showed what it can do. BTW, love that Custome Agent, don't see many of those around. Excellent Zepplin montage.
Thanks everybody, I appreciate all the views and your nice comments! All the positive response you have given to my videos has inspired me to make a solo album (now in progress) with my own material, inspired by many of these legendary players that I'm paying tribute to in these video series.. I will be using my Axe-Fx Ultra for all electric guitar sounds.
Is it possible to connect external controllers as you can with Logic Studio from Apple? In Mainstage you can control various parameters inside the computer using an outboard keyboard. This would make live use very easy.
@protocosm Yes, you can connect a midi foot controller like Fractal Audios own MFC-101 (I have one) or other similar MFC's, or you can use single expression pedals or footswitches.
@muymalmoon Thanks! This is a preamp, not an amp. For recording I don't need/use an amp, like you see I use only headphones. For live use you could also just go direct to PA without an amp, or you could use an amp for personal monitoring. I use one or two Atomic Reactor FR's , which are specifically designed to amplify the Axe-Fx, and are actually tube-powered. But you can use any amp you want, including a regular guitar amp, but a good "FR" system will probably work best.
Can't stop watching your videos - Brilliant, 500 stars!
Do these still sound good at low volumes? My neighbours have thin walls. Can you get these tones through headphones, or do you need expensive speakers?
DUDE. You're exceptionally versatile, I'm blown away and this is coming from someone who spends six hours a day playing John Petrucci and Al Di Meola solos.
@U2GuitarTutorials Thanks! I haven't planned any new videos right now, but I'm working on a solo album where I will be using my Axe-Fx for all guitar sounds. But I'm working on it inbetween all my other things to do, so it's progressing very slowly I'm afraid..
You just sold me onto the Axe Fx. Thank you :) get a job in sales/marketing haha

Are all thos patches standard with the AxeFX Ultra. Have you had to tweek them any.
They sound good. I have a Boss-GT 10 and the Amplitube StompIO systems.
Im thinking about selling them both and then buying a AxeFX Ultra.
Does the company make patches for new songs coming out and sounds bands are coming
up with in new songs? Is there any companies making patches for it to match nes songs
that come out?

3 (Cont) - and a TC Electronics G-Force. That is an awesome rig. But don't forget, you need to mic it up to record it which takes gear, time and skill. And you need to turn it up LOUD to get a really good tone which is often impractical in the project studio. And tube performance varies dramatically. The tone you dial in today may be very different than the tone you dialed in 3 months ago with the same settings. And tubes are expensive. And tube amps are heavy. And, And, And
bigdavewilliams2000 1 year ago
2 (Cont) - those other products don't even come close. I'd be very surprised if some one with a good ear and actual experience using these products can come to different conclusion. The Axe-Fx has the punch and presence to jump out of the speaker and has a tight low end with excellent articulation. It is very realistic.
3 - The debate about the Axe-FX vs. a "real tube amp" is ridiculous. If you have the cash and are so inclined by all means drop $3k on a Mesa Boogie Mark V half-stack
bigdavewilliams2000 1 year ago
A few comments:
1 - You are a guitar master. You morph from style to style effortlessly and nail the tones. They aren't always perfect (I think Master of Puppets is the worst offender) but in general they are amazingly accurate.
2 - The debate about Line 6 modeling or Guitar Rig or whatever vs. the Axe-FX is ridiculous. I have owned all of these products and without question the Axe-FX is vastly superior. Admittedly I have seen some tracks where someone got a great result but in general
bigdavewilliams2000 1 year ago
Thanks buddy I really enjoy your demos. Best axe-fx demo I've seen. Love that surf sound you get out of it.
Btw I am going to get one real soon. What did you use for amplification in these videos? Cheers
BoogieEngineer 1 year ago
@BoogieEngineer Cool, thanks! I didn't use any amplification at all, the Axe-Fx went straight to my computer via a small mixer.

@irishman013 Thanks, that's very flattering, but then I think you probably haven't seen enough guitar videos on youtube.. ;-) Anyway, I appreciate you're saying that!

@rednebb i see... so in case of the atomic reactor fr is better the active o the passive one? so the atomic fr works as a power amp also...?
jeffdisario 1 year ago
@jeffdisario The Atomic Reactor FR comes in two versions, active or passive. If you have the passive model, you can choose between Atomic's own stand-alone mono block power amp (which would be the same as the one built in the active model) or another power amp of your choice. Or you could use Atomic's power amp together with another cabinet, of course.
rednebb 1 year ago
hi ketil, is it possible to connect the axe into a combo amp? if so, what do i have to do? thanx
jeffdisario 1 year ago

Anyway, thanks for the video!

awesome playing but the zeppelin tones were not the greatest...
xntrickk 1 year ago
@xntrickk Thanks. Others have commented the Zeppelin tones also. My goal was to try to mimic the tone of the original recordings, but it's difficult to achieve the Black Dog sound, for instance. But maybe that's not so strange, if you know that Jimmy Page actually didn't use an amp or distortion pedal at all for that recording, he plugged his Les Paul into a direct box and gained up the mixing conxole's mic amp to get the distortion. And it's arguable whether that really was a great sound..?
rednebb 1 year ago
Hi Ketil,
Do I need to have a power amp in order to play the Axe-Fx? Or is there a way i can avoid buying a power amp and plug it into an interface (POD UX2) and play it through computer speakers. Thanks
msabaseball1293 1 year ago
@msabaseball1293 No, you don't need a power amp, you can use the setup you're describing, that's pretty similar to what I'm doing.

GREAT DEMO!
Awesome pallete of licks to show the true magic of this device. I just got this myself a few days ago and I am totally hypnotized just by the presets.
And thanks for sharing the parameters.

question: did you have to programme these "pet" sounds from scratch or were they preprogrammed on the axe. (aside from a bit of finetuning/eq )
thanks! great demo!
greatar 1 year ago
@greatar I used the factory presets as a starting point and fine tuned them a bit, some more than others. But most of the factory presets are very good and can be used as they are, unless you're looking for a very specific sound (like I did in this case..)

@zoso4563 No, there are no drum tracks on the Axe-Fx, I found most of my backing tracks on the internet.

This would make live use very easy.
protocosm 1 year ago
@protocosm Yes, you can connect a midi foot controller like Fractal Audios own MFC-101 (I have one) or other similar MFC's, or you can use single expression pedals or footswitches.
rednebb 1 year ago
Cool simulations, great tone. My question: why use this as an amplifier instead of a preamp?
Perhaps to rephrase this question: why not use the power of tubes (i.e. Vox AC30) to send this unit to new heights?
muymalmoon 1 year ago

@LordBransty Yes! You don't have to disturb your neighbours. I play with headphones most of the time.

@U2GuitarTutorials Thanks! I haven't planned any new videos right now, but I'm working on a solo album where I will be using my Axe-Fx for all guitar sounds. But I'm working on it inbetween all my other things to do, so it's progressing very slowly I'm afraid..
