Leonbergers aren't what you think they are. They could care less about people really. They would rather be around other dogs and will treat YOU like a dog. That means they'll jump up on you like another dog. At 120 to 150 pounds, that's a law suit waiting to happen. They're not particularly smart and not particularly trainable, so I'd stay away from this breed. They're good natured, sure, but are they "loving?" No, absolutely not. This video description mistakes a gentle dog with a loving dog.
I met a Leonberger once, and he was adorable. But he got out of the leash, and I got scared, actually the only thing he did was to sit down next to me. The owner said that the only reason he was in leash that day was because people had torches (?) in their hand, since the crowd was a demonstration crowd, and he was afraid of the dogs coat in case it would burn... I think I'll actually concider having a Leonberger someday :)
i'm getting one when i get older and move for myself :) right now i'm 20 and living at home with a malamute, who is a douchebag who won't listen to anything, but love him still :P but i "suffer" from dog allergies, which sucks more than you think, cause you can't cuddle with dogs the way you want to, unless you want to get itchy and sore eyes :( but after having a malamute and husky/malamute i believe having a leonberger will be an easy transition :) it's terrible that they have short lifespans
i want a leonberger sooo bad i have a bernese mountain dog and a coton de tulear!!! they are soo funny next to eachother!!! and also i think leonberegers are soooo cute and cuddly omg do they make good pets?? r they good with other dogs?? good with children??
@Deko309 This is a German dog. It's a Leonberger. You're thinking of the Šarplaninac wich is a Macedonian dog. They do look a like but the Šarplaninac have a more grey tone to their fur
I remember my first and only encounter with a leonberger. Usually I just walk past dogs and their owners but this one was so beautiful I just had to ask If I could pet it! I didn't know what breed it was and that was how I learned about the leonberger! And I sort of fell in love with it!
Can you jog with them and if so when can you start with? I now have a 9 months old female she's very active and energetic. I was thinking about waiting to about 12-18 months is this okay too soon too late? Do they have problems with joints if you jogg with them?
ps. I won't jog too long only for about 5 km max. every other day. (I'm starting to jog too so it will only be 1-2km in the beggining)
my first dog was a Leo we got her when i was four. She lived to be an ancient twelve years old. We finally put her down because it was hard on her joints to walk around.

I met an owner at the park having a Leonberger, as I thought it was a Saint bernard from behind (LOVE SAINT BERNARDS) I asked her if I could greet it. The owner was a special dogtrainer, and she noticed I got good care of dogs. She asked me to be her assistant as a summerjob (I'm 15).. Offered no since I'm doing voluenteer at the dogstables instead! :D and guess what, we just got a Leonberher there...
@TeamXFJ You are so lucky to be offered that kind of thing by a professional dog trainer!! I would do anything to work with animals. It's my dream, my goal, my everything =) <3
@TheDreamForgotten I love animals to, I really do :D Dogs are so special, you know they wont lie to you, they never would. I was about to say yes to the offer that lady gave me, but since I really want to help those abandonded dogs I chosed not to accept the offer :) The Leonberger , Leona, is still at the shelther though, we kept her since one of the employee fell in love with her. She recently got puppies, 7 adoreable ones.. :) I'm really glad I said no :D
I kinda want one I mean it's beautiful but short lifespan = sadness, heavy shedding = "snow globe house",and lots of space= big yard and or neiborhood, thats a big commitment
@azaaza0909 i know but still who wants 2 sweep every other day and walk them ALOT and what about the short lifespan? its a shame... such nice, and beautiful dogs
@UndercoverPegasus They don't need as much walking as most dog breeds like Labradors, Collies etc. As for the hair we actually find our Leonbergers moult less than our Golden Retrievers did. The thing is actually the training, many people don't put in the effort to socialize them with people and other dogs from 8 weeks. You may get away with it with a little Jack Russel or even a lab but not 10 stone dog! U should not own Leonbergers or giant breeds without proper experience with large breeds b4
Plan on getting one of this breed:) Ive promised myself to only own one pure bred dog and it's this one, I'm usually more of a mongrel street mixed breed dog person haha
giving birth to 18 puppies lolzzzzz....... in general i love dogs and my favourite breeds are english cocker spaniel, rottweiler, and saint bernard. i own a english cocker spaniel named prince. leonberger is intimidating though. love it. - rakesh murthy
I would LOVE to have one of these dogs but unfortunately, haven't got the space (living in England, which by the way for our American friends is a shithole and no I don't live anywhere near London, the house prices are ridiculous, not to mention fuel prices, council tax, road tax etc.) ANYWAY I have only ever met one once and fell in love straight away. As soon as I win the lottery, I'm buying a property big enough to house them
@jrlax1 yes they can, but that's not the problem here. he's talking about another breed, which can have a similar coat to leonberger. unfortunately, he's too lazy to to read about those 2 breeds before he makes a comment, so he ends up being mocked :/
If you want a Leonberger but are a bit put off with the size then go for a female. They are generally....GENERALLY...a bit smaller. But remember, even then they are still a bloody huge dog. You can see my Leo by having a look at my profile. I posted a vid of him when he was a little smaller than what he is now.
I have had both a Leo and a Bullmastiff....I do not envy your situation mate :) My Bully died a while ago but she was one of the most special dogs I have ever known. As for my Leo...well let me just say that it really is like having another human in the house. I love him to bits. Just do lots of research on them first. Visit the breeders a lot as well. That will give you the chance to know the breed better.
Again, both breeds of dog are just fantastic. Best of luck to you.
The narrative in this film is not entirely true. The lifespan of a Leo is approximately 10 years and some can live to 12. My leo was 10 last Christmas. His hearing is fine, his sight is fine and he is full of beans and still wants to play. As I board dogs in my home, this keeps him young with a constantly changing lot of companions for him. Also, I wouldn't say they are particularly smart compared to other breeds. But they are very sensitive.
My dog is just wonderful, but someone gets scared of her because of her size + that she bites. She only bites for play and fun and isnt aggressive. She's never been aggressive. And her play-biting doesnt hurt either :P
@elth1992 Cool! :D Yeah, I think evry single dog that has some Leonberger in it, or is a 100% leonberger is sweet to everyone :D None of this dogs would ever hurt a fly<33
i just realised that alot of large out going dogs always seem to have short lifespans but dogs like the caucasian shepard can be VERY agressive if not trained well have much longer life spans
if you take care of them good enough then they can live more than 8 years. my dog wa like 13 years old, when hes dead :\ i miss him relly mutch, but now i have a girl leonberger, shes 8 months old now, and shes alredy like 60 kgs :D
EXELENTES PERROS, RECIEN TENGO UNA PAREJA Y ME ENAMORE DE LA RAZA AHORA TENGO A SUS CACHORROS!!!!! Y CADA DIA ME GUSTA MAS, LASTIMA QUE AQUI EN MEXICO HAY MUY POCOS PERROS Y NO SON MUY CONOCIDOS Y ME SIENTO AFORTUNADO DE HABER CONOCIDO ESTA RAZA, GRACIAS Y ESPERO QUE HAYA MAS INFORMACION DE ESTA HERMOSA E IMPRESIONANTE MASCOTA
do they really need allot of space because i live in a townhouse with a mediocre yard but i am willing to walk it allot and there's allot of open space not far from my house where i can take it regularly will this be enough? please respond
@azaaza0909 they dont need that much excersize in the first years then they might need a little more around 3-5 and then they calm down again. i have a leo and she sleeps usually during the night and just want petting during the day they are great dogs and very gentle. They dont need that much space but they can have an active level from 2-10 it all depends on the dog so if you try to get a calm leo you should have no problem
My first Leo, a male, lived to 11.5 yrs. His father lived to over 12. His mother to 10.5. My current Leos are 6.5 yrs and 14 months. The young one is one of the 18 in the episode. See my channel for some other videos of the mine if interested. One thing I didn't understand is the hip dysplascia. Less than 10% of the Leos get it. Bone cancer and Hermangio Sarcoma (which took my first one) is far more common.
I watch these shows alot that's why I get bad grades in my tests

I wish they could find a way to extend these animals lives. just lost my second dog 10 years just isn't enough time.

I have a Leonberger mix! Lucky me :D
My dog is just wonderful, but someone gets scared of her because of her size + that she bites. She only bites for play and fun and isnt aggressive. She's never been aggressive. And her play-biting doesnt hurt either :P
And again.. LUCKY ME XD

i just realised that alot of large out going dogs always seem to have short lifespans but dogs like the caucasian shepard can be VERY agressive if not trained well have much longer life spans
versatilechicken 1 year ago
If you want a royal dog that you dont have to train to be a guard dog and its huge get a neo mastiff
FreegoDigo 1 year ago

8 years? mine live an average of 10 to 11 years. It depends on the breeding. And some of my girls are bigger than any boys.

do they really need allot of space because i live in a townhouse with a mediocre yard but i am willing to walk it allot and there's allot of open space not far from my house where i can take it regularly will this be enough? please respond
azaaza0909 1 year ago
@azaaza0909 they dont need that much excersize in the first years then they might need a little more around 3-5 and then they calm down again. i have a leo and she sleeps usually during the night and just want petting during the day they are great dogs and very gentle. They dont need that much space but they can have an active level from 2-10 it all depends on the dog so if you try to get a calm leo you should have no problem
supermanerbestur 1 year ago
My first Leo, a male, lived to 11.5 yrs. His father lived to over 12. His mother to 10.5. My current Leos are 6.5 yrs and 14 months. The young one is one of the 18 in the episode. See my channel for some other videos of the mine if interested. One thing I didn't understand is the hip dysplascia. Less than 10% of the Leos get it. Bone cancer and Hermangio Sarcoma (which took my first one) is far more common.
