Thanks. I do know Judy Collins' version. I'm interested in Chris Farlowe's interpretation, and wish that Reba McIntire would record it, if she hasn't done it yet. Marianne Faithfull would probably create a killer version.
This is the best interpretation of this song, in my opinion. (Beside Randy Newman's.)
Unlike several others, Irma Thomas seems to understand the bitter irony of the lyric.
Also check out Matthew Morris, Peter Gabriel, Anne Soldaat and Dennis Rowland for interesting interpretations. And Rick Nelson, Eric Burdon if you have time to spare.
@hugginsjack Randy Newman recorded it but I think Collins' Wild Flowers, the LP it was on came out before Randy Newman's first LP. I suppose he wrote it for her unless he gave it to someone else dat we're forgetting. BTW, Judy Collins' version was the best. (My opinion)
Some who have covered this: Cass Elliot, Eric Burdon, Joe Cocker, Katie Melua, Dusty Springfield, Nina Simone, UB40, Norah Jones, Bette Midler, Neil Diamond, Judy Collins, Bobby Darin, Barbara Dickson, Chris Farlowe, Joel Grey, Pete York, Rick Nelson, Leonard Nimoy, Jools Holland, David Lasley, Cleo Laine, Lyle Lovett, Helen Reddy, Houston Person, Tony Rice, Kenny Burrell, Julie Christensen,Dave Van Ronk, Peter Gabriel, Tom Northcott, David Gray, Claudine Longet. My first was Judy Collins.
Bette Midler , I think was the first female artist to cover this. I heard hers years ago , also Nina Simone , but Irma and Randy Newman...what a combo. I love them both.
thanks...! it realy is a fabulous arrangement. I have always liked the song too/ i thought nina simone's version was the best but this is really good!

@wielski It's a great song and ironically, the first version I ever heard you didn't list. Judy Collins from the "Wildflowers" LP.

You're welcome. I've always liked this song and hearing Irma do it was an opportunity to share something by her that was "virgin" to YT.
