Rocket Age (or Cold War) Sci-Fi at its best. Great flick -- great cast. There are some who think that the arrival an "alien emissary" who desires to bring peace to this world is long over-due. They're right (by 2,000 years). Merry CHRISTmas 2011!
You know what I love about this man (The Scientist), he completely understands that Klaatu is so far advanced that he humbles and nearly prostrates himself before such an intelligence. Everyone else tries to maintain their dominance over him. The smartest man in the film understands how little he actually knows...everyone else however does not.
This movie is a masterpiece. In my opinion, they eventually had to destroy the Earth. People like Bernhardt are too few and too far between.
This group of people in the boarding house seem so gentile & homey, almost "cozy"
to be around......My relatives were like this back in the 1950's...it made me so happy to gather at all the dinners & holiday feasts....now there is nothing, I'm here but every one else is dead. I'm sad all the time now....
I like the coziness... I like all the interior design of the time(and I'm not even gay). My great grandparents house was like that. Sometime in the late 60s, early 70s, somebody said, "Let's make houses for people who don't have souls!"
This is work of frikking genius-- by one of the masters of movie-making, Robert Wise-- a standard that so many subsequent sci-fi films fell short of. Small touches like Klaatu's quiet delight at the music box, with big themes that make you think.
Remaking it was unnecessary, which is not something you can say about a lot of sci-fi films, and especially about one that's 60 years old. Remaking it badly was a crime.
Did you ever get an answer as to where are parts 1 and 5? If they were deleted by youtube can they be reposted. ? Eventually youtube will forget to check and leave them out there. sort of like squaters rights ?

"Something dramatic but not destructive...would 'The Day After Tomorrow' be alright"
Okay! If you think unleashing tidal waves and plunging the Earth into an ice age is 'dramatic but not destructive'....

Dude, you have seen too many B-movies-- they're starting to run together...lol.
I recommend a crash-course of Jane Austen to clear the palate.

One of the best sequences of this amazing film. The lighting, the music, the sets, the alien language--had anything like this ever been done before?
