Lastly although not used here, since all this is simply artistically clever and accurate animated video projections it could also be projected in stereoscopic 3d. Food for thought.

Its preferable to take photo and project at a high diagonal angle to the motif so that all motif surfaces are visible (top sides) This effect can be achieved without 3d models using the photo alone as a guide but free handing your animation to a photo may not have such an accurate result.

To clarify. Make a motif of shapes 2.take a picture at a desired angle and mark the location. Make an exact 3d duplicate of the photos image then render an image, using a vid projector project the 3d mockup image atop the real motif and correct model for image skewing. When everything is aligned, add anim using modified 3d motif as guide. Remove 3d model from anim.

The premise is simple the execution or rather setup is not difficult as more time consuming. OK heres how it works. Using this case as an example. They setup a real motif of blocks, and setup 1 or 2 projectors that are linked to project on the entire desired space.(above diagonally). In a 3d app they modeled out the exact same space and matched the cgi projected forms exactly to the real shapes.(remember the projects would be skewed until corrected), then simply animated whatever you want.
