Who are the Jews of Israel? Survivors of the Holocaust and their descendants and the Jews of the Muslim countries who found refuge in the Jewish homeland, and their descendants. Surrounded by hostile enemies who incite hatred from childhood on in their people. And these leftists attack their own Jewish people. They are traitors from within. Their ideas lead only to destruction. They help no one and are simply self-indulgent, feeling all the while morally superior. Most are dangerous fools.
While the song is haunting, I am sorry that Chava A. has chosen to reword it. I used to respect her, and loved her Yiddish music, but this is disappointing. אני מסכים לחלוטין עם הביקורת נגד השמאלאנים, ובאמת תוהה אם חוה עדיין מסכימה עם מה שהיא שרה אז . The leftists in Israel are the craziest leftists in the world because their suggestions and demands can be seen for what they are -- a call for national suicide. Thankfully, Israelis have woken up and will not follow them.

In the 2005 film Free Zone, a song based on the traditional Chad Gadya is sung and composed by Israeli singer Chava Alberstein. It relates to the contemporary themes in the movie. It was banned on Israeli radio stations during 1980s.
It is source of the title A Kid for Two Farthings, a 1953 novel written by Wolf Mankowitz, the basis of a 1955 film and 1996 musical play.
It was featured in the American series NCIS in the season 7
@SamariaSHOMRONshomer The Latma version is simply based on the same arrangement made in 1976 by the Italian singer Angelo Branduardi. Branduardi's version of the song is called ALLA FIERA DELL'EST and can be easily found here on YouTube.
une chanson magnifique!... mélodie dramatique!... voix merveilleuse!... grâce au film "Free zone" j'ai compris les paroles, et j'ai les larmes aux yeux!... MERCI
i just dont understand why was the song banned by the Israel State Radio. (wikipedia: In 1989 Alberstein released an album "London", comprising the song Khad Gadya, in which she criticizes the Israel's policy towards Palestinians. The song was banned by the Israel State Radio.)
Some Jewish or Zionist thinkers believe Chad Gadya shows the different nations that have inhabited Israel: the kid being the Jewish people, the cat, Assyria; the dog, Babylon; the stick, Persia; the fire, Macedonia; the water, Rome; the ox, the Saracens; the slaughterer, the Crusaders; the Angel of Death, the Turks. At the end, God returns to send the Jews back to Israel.
This song is traditionally sung at Passover, and there are lots of different interpretations. The one I've heard the most frequently is that all of the different animals symbolize different empires that have conquered the Jewish people, and then conquered each other:) I forget exactly which empires all the animals symbolize.
Chava Alberstein added another stanza to the traditional lyrics though to talk about the current situation in Israel.
In fact, it starts in the Armenian language (as it is read traditionally at the end of the Passover-Hagada in the Jewish tradition), and then it goes to Hebrew, while the singer adds her own social-political meaning. That's for the lyrics. As for the music - it is Italian, as far as I know (Angelo Branduardi?) but lately I've heard that it is sung also in Greece.
English translation: (1) CHORUS (in aramaic): About a single goat our father bought for two coins a single goat, a single goat Our father bought us a young dog for two coins, so says the tale; came the cat and bit the goat the young, white goat. and came the dog and bit the cat who bit the goat our father have bougt CHORUS
(2) And than out of nowhere came a heavy wooden club which hit the dog, and he barked in pain, the dog who bit the cat, who bit the goat our father bought CHORUS Suddenly started the fire and burned the wooden club which hit the dog who bit the cat who bit the goat our father have bougt CHORUS
(3) Came than the water, and set off the fire which burn the wooden club which hit the dog who bit the cat who bit the goat our father have bougt CHORUS Next came the ox, and drinked all the water which turned off the fire which burn the wooden club which hit the dog who bit the cat who bit the goat our father have bougt CHORUS
This version of Chad Gadya was banned on Israeli radios for a while because Chava has, very bravely, changed the lyrics to suit her outrage at what her government does.
The most powerful stanza is: "How much longer will the circle of terror continue? Chase and be chased, beat and be beaten, when will this madness end?"
That's a bold faced lie! We have complete freedom of the radio in Israel and this song was never "banned". There is no such thing as "banned songs" in Israel.
Take your Muslim propaganda someplace else. No one needs lessons in Israel from Pakistan that's for sure!
Yes, of course. My being Muslim and Pakistani is all you need to discount what I am saying. No matter that what I am saying is true. No matter that some of my closest friends are Israeli and were the ones who introduced me to her music and what was done about this song.
I have a great deal of respect for Chava, and I dearly wish we had more like her over here.
But hey, what does it matter what I say? I'm just an evil, anti-Semitic Muslim who is out to destroy Israel.
dude its true from your not so loving another israeli, who would rather have hamid in his country then you. you need to open your eyes and maybe you will get wise.
@MommieDearest67 It is not a Muslim propaganda. This song was banned together with a song of Nurit Galron in 1989 or in 1990. It was a big scandal than.
Please tell me you're joking. That song is "banned"? Funny, it seems to be available on iTunes from the video description. Oh and I showed it to a couple of my Israeli friends and they laughed at, in their words, "a lame piece of propaganda".
More ad hominem attacks. Your point has been proven as being false, therefore you proceed to attack my identity. How wonderfully myopic.
Grow up, would you? I am sure sensible Israelis are as ashamed of you as I am of Pakistanis who would use your nationality as an excuse to discredit everything you say.

And why is it that you sing the Khad gadia?
it's isn't even spring yet and Passover is yet to come
and what have changed for you, what have changed?
I mysellf have changed this year
and every single night asked only four questions*
this night I have just one more;
how much longer shall the circle of horror go on?
chaser being chased, beater being beated
when shall this madness ever end?
yonataneshel 3 years ago 5

I myself have changed this year
I once was a calm and peacful little goat
today I've became a tiger and a devouring wolf
I've been a dove, I've been a deer
today I no longer know who I am.
CHORUS Our father bought a young goat for two coins
and here we start all over again..
