In the 2005 film Free Zone, a song based on the traditional Chad Gadya is sung and composed by Israeli singer Chava Alberstein. It relates to the contemporary themes in the movie. It was banned on Israeli radio stations during 1980s.

It is source of the title A Kid for Two Farthings, a 1953 novel written by Wolf Mankowitz, the basis of a 1955 film and 1996 musical play.

It was featured in the American series NCIS in the season 7

This song is traditionally sung at Passover, and there are lots of different interpretations. The one I've heard the most frequently is that all of the different animals symbolize different empires that have conquered the Jewish people, and then conquered each other:) I forget exactly which empires all the animals symbolize.

Chava Alberstein added another stanza to the traditional lyrics though to talk about the current situation in Israel.
