I think the ps3 would have been better, I'm pretty sure the consumer isn't going to notice any difference. I stream my files from my pc to the ps3 all the time, its not hard and easy and playing games is what would top it all off.
Depends on what you really want... if he wants to play games on the PS3 etc.. id suggest to just buy the PS3... instead of first buying the BD player... then buying the PS3 ... I bought my PS3 to watch Blue Ray Movies, surf the net, etc... but most of all to play awesome games!
