Doris Day was (is) also a Christian Scientist, right? So therefore there aren't the issues of drugs and alcohol as with Billie Holiday? Day's voice certainly has a purer and more innocent tone than the great Billie. But I suppose the art of self-destruction, perhaps through no fault of Billie's horrible life, tends to have its dividends.

@elgar34 Yes, Doris was a Christian Scientist for many years. She lived by their standards pretty closely I believe. She even took all alcohol out of her house and installed a soda fountain. Although - I have several pictures of her with cigarette in hand during these years. I guess some habits are hard to break !

The founder of her church, Mary Baker Eddy, had the nastiest things to say about tobacco in her textbook, which IMO would be fair enough. But Mrs. Eddy goes on to condemn tea and coffee. She had very high standards, too high for me. I love coffee. But MBE was a very brave woman, I think she saw something that no one else did.

@elgar34 Yes - I think later she did not smoke. But I have pictures from the 1960's with her smoking on movie sets. Maybe making movies made her nervous. Doris is no longer a Christian Scientist. But I bet she incorporates some of the teachings in her current beliefs.

Went from listening to Lee Wiley, then Maxine Sullivan on this same song. Doris' feeling and vibrato stand out. Rhythm or ballad, she was the best.

Yes what a beautiful sad melancholic love song ... actually though I like all her stuff, be it this kind of pained love song, or her fluffy novelty songs because she had such great timing and delivery, and the backing musicians were usually first rate as well ... the lady certainly was a class act. Thank you Dayniac for introducing us to another side of Doris Day. We always knew she had a lovely voice, but the songs we heard her sing were fairly trite. Not so with this one. Why didn't the idiots at Columbia let her do more of these great classics?

She really has an amazing voice. She recorded around 1100 songs in her career. Unfortunately - she and most other stars had to sing the silly novelty stuff too. Thank goodness she was able to sing many classics too ! When you get away from the movie songs - and other novelty stuff -- she has some really superb recordings. Thank you -- I'm really happy you discovered this side of Doris !!

WOW! This really shows Doris Day as a song stylist and sensitive artist. I wish she would have done more repertoire like that fluffy cutesie poo stuff she would do. This one is a textbook in style and heartfelt interpretation

She really was superb -- this is my favorite type of Doris song. According to Doris and other singers under contract to Columbia - you had to sing the novelty stuff to be able to sing the songs you really wanted to sing. I don't know if it was all Mitch Miller's doing - but he was the head of Columbia in the 50's and that was his feeling on the subject of song choice. I've read that Rosemary Clooney had many diagreements with him about song choice.
