Learn to Use Free File Security Encryption Software

I'm lost, I think. I've worked with SafeHouse on an older computer and Iomega portable disk drive for months. I recently bought a new computer, downloaded and reinstalled SafeHouse, attached my Iomega drive. I can bring up the contents of the drive and can copy items out, BUT I cannot create new folders or put anything in. I believe this is because the volume is read only? Is there any way out of this?

What do you mean that's it! you only showed how to put folders and files into the safe NOT how to take them out. you may decided you want the folders back out and on your hard drive somewhere else.

ANother thing you say you get a drive number next to the red safehouse folder, I dont. There is no drive that appears in Mycomputer but everything else works so far.

@elwoodetubes You can access files using drag and drop - in either direction, just like using Windows Explorer. To get a real drive letter with SafeHouse Explorer, you must install it on your PC. If you don't do a full install, it runs in a reduced feature mode which is typically intended to be used on PCs where you are unable or not allowed to do a traditional install.

@pavritch I have the drive letter now, by letting it install the extras. Before I did that drag and drop also didnt work, I dragged some folders out but when I looked inside them they were empty. Now it works fine

Is there a way to lock the flash drive, so they can't delete the files?

@Jeffreylb94 SafeHouse cannot prevent the "vault" files from being deleted. There are many ways a determined person could delete files, including destroying hard drives and memory sticks. What it does do, however, is prevent any of the data in these files from being seen.

I Have a question.Just so you know i am very new to all this computers stuff so any help would be of great help. My question is that in other encryption softwares, the volumes can only be accessed by using a password but CAN be deleted without using the password. Is it the same case with safe house explorer? If yes can you please suggest me a software that will help me.

This software is fantastic, a great alternative to the other one (which is also great). How were you able to talk so much without moving your lips even once...kidding. Did you make MenuWorks and MenuWorks Advanced way back in the day? That was also a great, great program...I miss the simplicity of DOS sometimes.

So if installation (admin privileges) provides the virtual drive letter...what happens if you don't have admin privileges and so cannot run the installer?

If you don't have admin rights, you can still run the stand-alone software which is a single EXE from our website. But in that case you will not have all the features available to you. Generally, most people have admin rights on their own machines, and they only need to work in the other mode when accessing their data from other non-owned machines.

The main one is that you need admin rights to have the encrypted vault show up as a new drive letter - so you can save to it directly with programs such as Word. Otherwise, it behaves as a drag and drop container - still nice too.

I have put the standalone and my volume on my Flash Drive, but when i open it up, the virtual drive doesn't apper in my computer. Why?

To get the virtual drive letter, you must install the performance enhancements -- find it in Tools|Options dialog. This is also done automatically for you if you run the standard product installer.

Yes, works great on XP. To get that menu you mentioned, you must right click drag, just like in Windows Explorer.

With SafeHouse Explorer you can easily make a self-decrypting vault which you can send to somebody - and they just need to know the password. We have a video which shows this on our website and here too.

This is a Windows restriction on the FAT32 file format which is standard on most memory sticks from the factory. You can use the standard Windows drive format utility to reformat to the more-advanced NTFS format. Just right click on the drive letter for your memory stick in Windows Explorer, and then choose Format Drive.

Ive been using this at college fine, I wanted it so if I loose it no-one can see all my work files ect.. However I cross use my flash drive with Windows and MAC. However, to my understanding this wont work with a MAC? Any ways round this? Please help.
