Had DR-100 2 years as a Field Recorder it should be protected on mic ends as it falls head first breaking the plastic covers yet has side bars ~ crazy plus the On/Off Button breaks on DR-100 only held on mother board by two tiny plastic legs:Cost for Plastic Mic covers in UK around £120 GBP On/Off Switch around £100 iGBP nc VAT Great for a Field Recorder - not - remember this is an 'In the Field'. Come on Tascam. Hope DR 40 is better.Michael www_/OAK77_com
@ghenry84 Definitely the DR-100. It has a separate line out and headphone out. The rechargeable battery switches over the the AA's automatically when it dies and doesn't interrupt the recording. It has 2 line in volume dials as opposed to the click buttons on the zoom. The dials decrease excess noise when recording. Plus Tascam just has more history and is more reliable.
Bought it about two weeks ago and have only tested it inside with the built in mics. Maybe I need to mess with it more, because they hardly picked up anything...
I still want to test it with my mics, but as far as build quality it is one nice solid piece. Nothing flimsy.
Bought it on Amazon for $293 new. Just hope it was the better choice from the H4N.
As far as I can tell - having just bought this thing - it ain't worth $300.
You can't get shit for sound using the lowest gain setting. You have to crank up the built in gain to get clear audio, but this in turn creates a bad hiss which is pretty distracting. The preamps suck. I HATE that you can't record XLR and OMNI simultaneously. Also, using phantom power will kill your battery. A lot of sites say this thing can go for 5+ hrs on the li-ion battery. This is NOT true.
its sexy? its a field recorder i want it to sound good not look sexy, just build it like a brick shithouse and sound good thats not too much to ask is it?
The DR100 seems to have been kicked into a cocked hat by the H4n from Samson/Zoom is this the case ? as i cant find any high street store selling this unit.
@Mikemainstreet use your PSP charger , USB port on your computer or any 5V DC supply,it does not have to be from TASCAM and like you i agree £380:00 and no PSU to find out they want £29:95 for their one .I DONT THINK Sooooooo! i also use the Tom Tom 12v car charger for longer recordings in the field,so feel free to have a look at my channel i do have a couple of audio tests in the field with my DR100.
Cool recorder, but WAY overpriced! The Zoom H4n has nearly all the same features, PLUS can record up to 4 tracks simultaneously and is MUCH more inexpensive.
If Tascam wants musicians like me to get on board, they will have to at least match the competition in features before asking for more than a hundred dollars more in price!
Zoom do decent budget equipment but in my experience Tascam build rugged equipment capable of recording high quality sound. Zoom equipment is very functional at an attractive price but the H4n looks ready to break. When buying equipment from them I've regretted not considering the slightly more expensive gear from companies like tascam, not just for quality but also seeing how they retain price when you want to sell them on. Zoom devices plummet not long after.
Good point. The DR 100 looks good and built like a brick but they don't even throw in a mains adapter with it. I just bought the Zoom H2 and although the build quality is very plasticy I got a load of extras with it like a 1gb and 4 gb SD card, Mini table tripod, Silicon case plus all the stuff that comes in the box like a mains adapter.
Hi! Did you realy love this machine? I want to buy one, I am violonist, and I want to record concert, classical music. I am looking for extra quality of sound. Tell me your opinion. Thank you.

Just want to ask, Between the Tascam Dr-100 and the Zoom H4n which is better and more practical for recording with videos when using a DSLR?

@staphinfection i prob should direct that to the reviewer aswell!

Ditch the fucking remote control (it's a god damned portable unit anyway!) Give us some EQ controls and better GAIN adjustments.
And for fucks sake, just make it come standard with a 16gb card AT LEAST.

I have one and its broken :( all of a sudden its just stopped recording. WHY???
That's £300 I wont see again.
Great quality recording on the uni microphones when it works.
I don't see the point in the omni mics, they're completely pointless and crap quality.

Another Field recorder indoors..why are all the videos i watch on here never outside in the real world.
And i hope this video was not recorded on this recorder.
