  • it's agreat tune for a few late/early in the night/morning whatever your choice is

  • I love John McDermott and I love this song. I just wish he hadn't tinkered so much with the original lyrics.

  • to all the veterans of all the wars and conflicts past and present, including my great grandfather Alan D Cameron of the RFC ww1, and my grandfather Donald H Cameron of the RCA ww2 and my great uncle Clarence Campbell of the First specail forces unit" the devil's brigade". We shall never forget the sacrifices you made for us so we can be free and enjoy the lives you lost overseas doing your duty. Lest We Forget!! God Bless.

  • Thanks for the words and for singing this song.

  • I think this is one of the best recording that John McDermott haas ever mad. I never get tired of hearing it. Norman Bodarky

  • I sthink this is one of the best recordings John has ever made.

  • Amen, John.

  • Thank you!

  • Listen, reflect & remember.

  • I love the way John sings this! Eruic Bogle is a genious lyric writer!

  • If only we could use songs and sentiment to make the wars to stop... But that won't happen until the Lord returns...

Until then, may the Lord grant us leaders who spend our brave youth as wisely and sparingly as possible to keep us free to enjoy the blessings of freedom...

Remember we can "end all wars" by just surrendering to every tyrant who demands it... but that won't end all senseless killing...

  • Extend an olive branch to the likes of Bin Laden and you'll find yourself in a "war to end all wars"...Only after he's beheaded 200 million people or so.(Sometimes war is a necessary evil.)

  • I love the lyrics of this song. It speaks to the tragedy of all war really but particularly the "War to End All Wars." This was the first of this countries foreign wars and the break from our founding father's concept of no nation building.

  • this sounds like the irish rovers version but idk for sure if it is

can someone please inform me about this? im confused and i love this version and the rovers, but i cant find it anywhere! thanks (:

    sad song=[

  • No, It's the great Irish Tenor,John McDermott.

  • i know which one this is but i was wondering if anyone has heard of the rovers version, it sounds similar and i cant find it. if not, thanks anyway.

  • @rbluejayway Irish tenor? Scots born Canadian methinks. Bloody brilliant anyway.

  • @357HFC Irish Tenor

  • I love the Dropkick Murphys and their version of this song; I love Ronan Tynan singing this song; but none compare to John McDermott singing it.

  • You may want to give Celtic Thunder's cover.

  • Nothing compares to John McDermott's version.

  • whatever your veiws on politics s heartbreaking song, at the end of thestory, its a young man buried under a foreign sky, away from his home...

  • At the end of the day, all wars are about nothing. The only conceivable "good" reason for a war would be self defense, but then again, where does the need for self defense come from if there is no aggressor in the first place.

A war is always about people killing other people they don't even know in the interest of others who most likely survive, since they do not participate, but profit from it.

Actually that is what is meant with "it all happened again, and again, and again..."

  • How about Pearl Harbor, Adolf Hitler, 911.

  • how about saving innocent lives, like in WWII or freeing the oppressed in the cold war? sometimes war is the only thing left to do. protest did not bring down hitler, bombs did.

  • @acapellagirl24 yeah but the war didn't start with freeing people.. it started with hitler invading poland...

  • @chef4n Greed or some perceived slight. Just think of what we could accomplish together as people.

  • @chef4n I think the only war that needed fighting was the 2nd., which wouldn't have come about but for the1st. Trouble is that there are always aggressors. I understand the song 'the universal soldier' more as I age.

  • Yes that is true in all wars , men die for the men next to them but in this case none of them needed be there . Could of all been stopped with the Christmas truce but leaders have their traditions etc.

  • What makes it so sad is that the war was about nothing . At least in others wars people can say he died for this or that but not this one .

  • They died for the men next to them

  • soooo good.... brings tears to my eyes

  • better than the others..
