@MechPhantom Each style has its main techniques and strong points. when people are highly skilled they share more in common than they have differences. All roads lead to rome so to speak. As for my fujian white crane (flying crane branch) it is a complete system training both empty hands and a great variety of weapons. The systems strong points are fast hands , footwork and deceitful pressure point strikes. We aim for the groin, throat and eyes, etc....
Ther is still real kung fu but yes ther is a lot of modern wushu , mixes of modern and traditional etc...but dont discount the real ones we are still out there! Theres real kungh fu in the US , canada, taiwan malaysia etc actually all over the world. Just have to be able to tell....
Shaolin Wahnam is also a good place to go for traditional, old school kung fu and tai chi. Sigung Wong Kiew Kit has a few books out as well if you are interested.
I don't practice any martial arts and I have a limited knowledge gained from watching movies so I'm clearly no expert but aren't martial arts made to keep the body and mind in good health and as a form of SELF-DEFENSE? If the movie Fearless taught me anything is that comparing styles is useless, as no style is better than the other. Also, cool fights don't happen in real life, thats only in the movies! When your opponent wants to beat you up, fancy moves won't save you, only solid strikes.
@Lpedraja2002 true this is the flashy version of it of course to bring tourists in, these shaolin monks are great but dont do real shaolin, theres traditional kung fu ofcourse such as hung gar wingchun xingyi taichi that can teach you how to defend yourself.
Hard would imply Muay Thai and soft would imply BJJ. If u compare MT to Kung Fu, than MT would be slightly more powerful than Kung fu as the movements employ conventional roundhouse and thrusting, kicks or punches that emphasize power and brute strength. On the other hand, Kung fu employs more intricate movements that include thrusting, round and even acrobatic movements that require greater speed and technique. although its softer, precision and speed is the key. We'll hv a good debate!
@lawker777 yeah yeah I´ve heard many guys saying that mma are the best of the best and bla bla bla muay thai is the strongest shit and everything and that every fight leads to the ground and that bjj is the key and bla bla bla... I say that the best option in a combat were your life is in danger is a GUN. If i want to kill someone i use a GUN, stop bothering around with those silly debates, martial arts are a road that teaches you a diferent way, teaches courage and other virtues
@lawker777 Your not right, now dont get me wrong I use Muay Thai, but it isnt the style that determines strength its the user of the style the strongest muay thai fighter in the world could have poor form and get lose to a master at any other martial art. Dont argue about what kung fu uses because there are different kung fu styles for everything, Wing Chun is kung fu and it uses basic moves based on biomechanics just like BJJ, kung fu has the widest range of styles and some people combine them.
@lawker777 Kung Fu is a fairly broad field. Tiger style, for example is pretty much based on the brute strength and killer speed of a tiger. It can be used to rip the throat out of your opponent. Comparatively, Snake (since I'm on the topic of Animal styles) is generally based on deception, speed, and "wrapping up" your opponent's defense. Both of these, while "intricate" and technique heavy, are indeed powerful, but for different reasons.
@lawker777 Kung Fu is not allowed in the UFC because it just wouldn't be fair, the kung fu artist would win every fight and it's also too lethal compared to the softer forms of martial arts used in MMA
@Thathouseguy haha! thats a good way of putting it. ive seen how fast and powerful some monks are. they are, ironically, more lethal killing machines. .but sorry, wt do u mean by soft martial arts in mma?
@lawker777 soft martial arts is a personal opinion of mine it's just what i call the martial arts used in MMA because they're not really that fierce or powerful compared to other martial arts, yes someone who knows ju jitsu and w/.e else they got going on in UFC will put up a good fight to most, but to a kung fu trained person, nope
@Thathouseguy Your comment mad no sense what so ever, and it's not that I'm disagreeing with you but your grammar is horrible. Also the early UFC and other MMA events before the 21 century had plenty of Kung Fu guys, the a reason you don't see kung fu in MMA much anymore. No one as of yet knows how to make it work. They keep getting smashed.
@Thathouseguy In case someone says "well kung fu in the modern era is watered down and the fighters in the past knew how to fight" but in the 1920s a well publiczed match between Kung Fu And Muay Thai took place all five "Masters" got knocked out first round. Only one made it past the second. Google it, or read it from Kung Fu magazine or on forums with some pictures. Its the reason why the Chnese military dropped kung fu and developed SAN SHOU aka Sanda instead. Kung Fu doesn't work to well.
@VietzRus Thats why sanda was created in the 80s, coz kung fu itsnt for fighitng , ts about having a storng mind, exercise etc. But never for fighting, sanda is the onl art that can beat MT ,other kung fu styles all got beat in the 20s,70 etc. Sanda is bascally a counter to MT. And its the only kung fu art that works, along with wing chun, hung gar and choi li fut. Most useless is shaolin, its deadly thousdans of years ago.
@MechPhantom I beg to differ but the histoiry is quite different. real kung fu is not a sport and was largely wiped out in china by the communist. Modern san da was created in the early 1980's by several masters of which one or two had extensive western boxing background. Real kung fu is about many thinngs and is certainly about killing not fighting. Of course at a high level its avbout developping compassion.
@whitecranecanada I agree that choy lay fut is good for the ring . what is being labelled shaolin or kung fu or traitional as im sure you realize is most often not. Ther are many good sanda fighters and muay thai fighters. They are good because of the hard training not the superiority of the techniques...
Also some styles dam deadly in certain contextes but not with gloves on...martial arts does not always equal sports...just sharing my ideas.
@whitecranecanada so what styles are deadly in your opinion, after all u keep insisting deadl styles can i know what are thsoe styles? but for sure i know wing chun is super practical and dam deadly, and its also based on shaolin's weakness. So best kung fu for me gotta be WC hands down
@MechPhantom Its up to you to be open minded a]nd look. Ive been traing fujian white crane for 30 years and i find it dam deadly. Choy lay fut, jow ga, hung ga, white crane, fut ga, mok ga, hsing etc...are all good if you are learning from a competent teacher and if you train hard
@whitecranecanada Haha yea man i agree with what u speak of no doubt. Btw can you tell me those deadly arts you speak of so i can find more info aobut it, and btw explain more of the white crane you speak off, like what does it teaches? does it have fancy punches ,kicks , movements in it? You said deadly, like what techniques make it deadly . PEace see you bro =)
@whitecranecanada Sadly theres no more "real" kung fu rite now, only modern wushu like the one u see above. If there is , but i bet its super hard to find 1, also its for fighting also, and to hurt, to kill im not about that, 1 thinkg i know real self defense such as krav maga hit vital organs etc to give serious injury. Now theres only modern wushu i guess in the world of kung fu, few kung fu left like i said on my other previous comments, mostly southern styles
@VietzRus continued Btw ALOT of shaolin monks went to fight those MT guys , also got smashed just in the first rounds. Masters form malaysia too got owned. Bottom line kung fu dont really wor k well against solid arts like MT etc. only sanda does haha
@MechPhantom shaolin does work but the one that works is wugulun, many schools that call their "shaolin" tradition tend to not always be traditional, alot of strikes aim for eyes etc you could call it dirty fighting, but taichi is dirtiest
@darksantos1 Yea the ONLY shaolin that ONLY works i no doubt wugulun with master called shi de jian, yea hes the real deal, no nonsense ,no bullshit non fancy stuff, just straight for the kill simple, basic techniques, thats what i call REAL martial arts, just like wing chun. Other than that other shaolin doesnt work for shit, most of them are for performances. Btw why is tai chi the dirtiest? lol last time i checked its pretty ok, more like aikido, not very brutal
@darksantos1 most of their techniques are just to subdue their opponents with moves like pushing hands etc. Pretty cool MA tai chi is, but modern day now, its more of an execise art than a martial art. I thnik ur referring to the OLD taichi that is dirty
