Here is what I would recommend to everyone running Windows 7 to protect themselves:

1) Set UAC slider to max possible.

2) Make sure Windows firewall is configured to block connections unless you explicitly add an application to the whitelist.

3) Get a good antivirus program.

4) Buy and configure a NAT router. A NAT router act as a very good hardware firewall.
