  • holy shit, was that a girl in that sea of manliness at the Minor Threat show?

  • that guy isn't so tough, he's selling ice cream! what a swell guy! i saw you selling ice cream, pal...

  • @theneatyo Dude, that's friggin Ian MacKaye, one of the most influencial musicians in underground music in the last 30 years, almost every band that palys some form of rock, hardcore, punk, alternative or whatever lists him as an influence to them wanting to play music and to the style of music that they write.

  • @theneatyo Don't try to deny it! You Ice Cream Eating Motherfucker!

  • like a boss

  • The last good band Ian was in :/ too bad it was really short-lived..

  • This is from ANOTHER STATE OF MIND

not really a Minor Threat documentary....but good movie

  • straight edge because they cant get pussy lol ... jk

  • wall to wall!

  • Boss!

  • fuck straight edge bunch of fucken wankers. its all about your mom. fuckin posers but your jams kick ass

  • @198rorivera you realize your going to get alot of thumbs down? Go complain somewhere else.

  • @198rorivera but i respect that you love the music.

  • Straight Edge can be a lot better than not. But you actually have to believe in it, not just think of it as a diet, or a way to get closer to your favorite band.

  • @ceoproperties Fuck your white power

  • @PitbeastA WHAT WHITE POWER ????

  • @THUGedu look at the person that comment was for. ceoproperties or who ever that is

  • @PitbeastA

OH I THOUGHT U WERE COMMENETING ON THE VIDEO AS IF IT WERE A WHITE POWER SONG ...MY BAD....I WAS GONNA TELL YOU U R A DUMBASS...BUT THATS ME I GUESS :)

  • I was waiting to see Rollins in the Hagen Das

  • man if i saw ian mackay working at my ice cream shop id freaking be speechless ahah

  • can these guys reunite? Please? Bring this shit back for christ sake

  • Whats Ian singing in the beginning of this?

  • @gunnare123 In my eyes, dummy :P

  • @gunnare123 In My Eye

  • @scottyanthonyrose yeah lol, As you can see I answered my own dumb question. ;P

  • sex, drugs, and rock'n'roll for me.

  • where can i see the rest of the docu?

  • You would think a band like this would've lasted longer than it did. I still respect them though.

  • I dont smoke, drink, anything like that. I did that before I even knew about minor threat, people call me a straight edge. Im a huge punk rock fan too, it fits perfectly haha

  • dude i feel like ian i just hate my friends once i became a punk i just started hateing them think ing there bob marly or some gangster pot head i love to get messed up but i am not a jerk or steal or think i am a bad ass

  • these guys kick so much ass. born too late. fml. not really straightedge, i drink and smoke cigarettes, but that's all. seriously though, i think i know more about it's history than most of the straightedge people where i live. sad.

  • ian didnt look down at people, get your facts straight straightedge442, do you look down upon people? iunederstand the message hes saying and thats his way of bettering him self and wishes it upon others, and i am not a straight edge but i look up to evryone that is UNLESS there looking down at me and thinking im useless, so piss off, monor threat is a mile stone in the punk genra

  • I smoke cigarettes and drink, but never in excess, and I never want to be around people trying to "Fuck shit up". I enjoy self-expression and conversation with people, I respect the early straight edge movement because it went against the grain of what "Punk" had become, a bunch of junkies and drunks essentially. Now days it's become incredibly militant in some places, and it's just not cool. I don't want to be hated on for just having a smoke a having a beer....

  • @AckbarFlakes yea, it really has here too. they call it hate edge. They've turned something good into facism, forcing their views onto others with physical acts of violence. there are groups of them at shows and they harass and attempt to assault people who are smoking cigarettes outside the venue. dunno if they cause problems with the other stuff too (drinking, drugs, sex) because they've only fucked with me when i was smoking cigarettes (don't drink in public, no drugs, no 1-nighters)

  • @AckbarFlakes straight edge is nothing but the antithesis of the modern degraded and decaying northamerican violent culture, period,it has nothing to do with being violent against people who drink or smoke or do drugs, straight edge is,or was a movement that promoted social change, but the new generations are destroying the real movement, they only care about being tough, tattooed, and violent,so fuck them,I'm bringing this back

  • Eh, minor threat is a good band. I love them but fuck straight edge. I smoke dope? So what. I'm not going to stop blazing for a movement hell no. And call me worthless call me stupid. But I know my limit and I know when to do it. Yea I do it in peace I don't go out fucking people over or anything. I'm a peaceful person. So what's so wrong with that?

  • @jlbroich nothing, hes just saying he doesnt want to be a worthless piece of shit, causing dumb problems for no reason other than boredom and an altered mind

  • @jlbroich nothing's wrong, but what's wrong with straight edge, is a personal descision, if you wanna take it good, if don't also good, you're not forced to do anything. what is wrong is intollerance from both sides (sxe and drinkers), live your life with your own rules, that's the message. SxE=Punk

  • @jlbroich nobody is saying anythings wrong with it. Its just not their thing. Simple

  • Nice this world needs a straight edge movement or at least mediocrisy. I am more about an intelligence and rights movement though.

  • Nice sxe movement isn't bad, if people are smart about it. I am more about an intelligence movement and peace.

  • this fag shoulda stuck to scoop'n ice cream

  • @carnalito81 i hope thats was a joke, if not, DO YOU REALIZE WHAT THIS MAN HAS GONE ON TO DO WITH HIS LIFE?????? Ian has lived a life most people only get to read about, to this day he has stood by his convictions and it's brought him much success and recognition worldwide, not to mention being a amazing songwriter, the evolution of his art over the years is stunning, same can't be said for most other "punk" bands. Ian MacKaye is the epitome of punk.

    i smoke pot.

  • @EFK76 yeah it was a joke, i was just being dumb. minor threats will always kick ass. don't worry i know what he and mt did for this music.

  • @EFK76 ha i love that :3

  • They should make a ice cream bar called Minor Threat!

  • the only reason people do drugs is to conform

  • @misfitsruby dude come on that's a ridiculous statement to say that the only reason people do drugs is to conform. in my experience and in the experience of plenty of people i know, smoking pot was the first step towards questioning the system and everything we were told growing up. i respect people's decisions to stay away from drugs, but you can't just make large assumptions like that because it makes you sound like an asshole

  • @LOVEhateHUMANS

yet you pot heads are still only questioning the system

    get out their and fight

  • @misfitsruby this is what i'm talking about, the whole aggressive "conformist" label goes both ways. taking either approach too far is wrong, you need to respect people's choices. you come off very hypocritical. i think you're just "conforming" to the straight edge scene because people told you to. and while it doesn't really matter, i'm actually not a pot head at all. so be careful about how you respond to people. to assume makes an ass out of you and me.

  • @misfitsruby fuck tard

  • @IAmSoTight1 I was just adding to i9incher's description. Its not just rebelling and being your own individual. Ian has said it himself that it was his way of keeping youth and not doing "grown up" things such as drinking.

  • the kings of straight edge

  • Minor threat is amazing, not only did they help form the hardcore scene, but they really demonstrated the power of music. Their music really inspired a lot of punks to stop drinking and doing drugs. They were only together for 2 years and in that time they managed to inspire big bands like Rise Against and Rage Against The Machine. What band does that? Heck if look at any modern hardcore bands influences chances are one of them is Minor threat.

  • It gets me angry too see what "punk" has become, just plain violence, it's not even about hanging out anymore, now it's about, "Hey let's see how much crap we can do." What happened to just having fun and hanging out with your friends.

  • fuck straight edge!

  • @humanoflife

there's nothing wrong with straight edge, just don't judge those who don't follow you.

that being said MINOR FUCKING THREAT. WE WANT YOU BACK.

  • @i9incher its not just about rebelling at all actually. Its a way of keeping your youth and not complying to adulthood. its not just about the pressure.

  • @Nick77076 it's actually about being your own person and not being what THEY want you to be.

  • spelled it wrong

    Minor Threat !

  • Comment removed

  • this is from the movie " Another state of mine"

  • minor threat is the bee's knees

    so is straight edge!!!

  • minor threat is the bee's knees

  • ian speaks the truth! be against wat u do NOT believe in and THAT is punk!!

  • This guy is a Jehova witness!!!

  • don't smoke, don't drink, don't fuck. at least i can fucking think.

  • does Ian hit the guy in the yellow shirt at 4:16?

  • @SSDecontrol94 I think so...

  • straight edge is a wonderful thing, it enables you to stand up for what you believe in. it lets people know that straight edge punk rockers have just as good of lives, if not better lives, than those who drink, smoke, fight, cause chaos, and randomly have sex with random people. it takes a stand against bad things, which is great. punk rock doesnt mean living a criminal life, its about speaking your views.

  • @LProck4everGD1 Straight Edge Is A Fashion, nothing more, nothing less...

  • @TheBookWorld that honestly makes zero sense

  • @LProck4everGD1 ..... you associate straight edge with that but all that shit you say applies with or without it, people were saying FUCK YOU to conformity long before straight edge.

  • all the dick straight edge keds need to watch this and learn from it cause they think there better then the ones the drink smoke drug and fuck at random

  • One of the greatest Hardcore-Bands ever

  • Str8 or not... Free ur mind and or flex ur head...ur life ...ur call....

  • it sucks how much all these ignorant kids nowadays had too ruin shit up and now EVERYONE thinks that straiht edge is gang related when its really just a philosophy about anti drugs and shit like that. Plus the original straight edgers were positive people not killers and fighters. FUCK FSU, punks fucking ruined that shit. I`m not straight edge but I love HC Punk.

  • is ian autistic? he sounds really weird.

  • @subliminallz What!? Look at any Fugazi clip and that should answer your question!

  • I totally agree with Ian.

His straightedge view is mine too.

    I

  • I love doing drugs !!

  • @lordburzum...Cheers!!!

  • I Might be an adult but im MINOR AT HEART!!!

We are just a MINOR THREAT!!

  • I got my shit together, I smoke dope, I drink beer, I'm also in a punk band as a drummer, and I agree with Ian, I hate people who get rowdy and wreckless and fucked up, some people just can't handle the privlages of accessing those intoxicants. Other than that, MINOR THREAT IS AMAZING. 4:00 - 5:11 gives me chills

  • @l337m0x ...very well stated...I enjoy getting fucked up to 'Minor Threat' as I sport their shirt. Its been a long held pass time. Some of our scene was Str8 Edge and many of us were not...we didnt enforce any one view & instead embraced many.

  • I've got my head straight and i've got my shit together yet i still occasionally smoke pot. Is that straight edge? That's what Ian Mckay said.

  • aw MINOR THREAT, good band,

  • @beastly1989 thats so weird! in a way it always sounded like they were XD

  • i love drinking alcohol i could never be straight edge (until its forced) lol but Minor Threat are still one of the best punk bands of all time =] (ironically me and my mates drink to them alot lol)

  • @BloodEssential ...absolutely...a great "past time" in our scene as well. Some of us were Str8 and many of us were not. We are punx against oppression of any kind. Free ur mind and or Flex ur head...its ur life...ur call...Cheers!

  • I LOVE this music and I am definitely into all the stuff they preach against.

  • FUCKING EPIC!!! SHIT!!

  • xXx

  • it's funny to see how well spoken ian has become over the years.

  • @skaneverdies Even between then and the Fugazi days.

  • the sad thing about straight edge is that it has turned in to a joke, you go to a show and you see thies mother fuckers with the Xs on there hands and what they are drinking beer and huffing

  • Although I had my partying years, too many, I love the attitude Ian emits.

  • Wow video of Ian working the ice cream store him and henry rollins worked before henry went to Black Flag. Wow.

  • Ian talks so fucking wierd

  • @SheepYardMasters i know right, it really adds a cool tone to his singign but hsi talking voice sound slike he is really sick.

  • I been straight edge for 1 month, and I feel great!

  • i would love to go to a decent hardkor gig, the punk gigs in bristol are mostly SHIT

  • straight edge is a fucken great concept - morally unarguable! funny society rarely takes up on this, but only on movements that are negative. straight edgers are to be respected and admired!!!

  • I'll respect a straight edger the day they stop looking down on other people.

  • those are some very broad strokes you're painting with there. it sounds a lot like you're the elitist.

  • not really. i respect the straight edge life style and what Ian Makcay originally stood for. but some kids take Straight Edge and flip it around and start looking down on people who aren't straight edge, which pisses me off.

  • @dfghgtyt being straightedge is intensely personal - not about being "above" it all so much as away from it. that's a pretty sweeping generalization you made.

  • @dfghgtyt Looking down on others was the direct antithesis of Ian's mentality.

Don't make any dumb-ass remarks about the username either. It would be incredibly unoriginal.

  • @straightedge442 fuck tard

  • @dfghgtyt the striaght edgers who look down at you are not straight edge lol

  • @dfghgtyt he says in the interview that he doesnt think hes better than anyone because hes straight edge.

  • @dfghgtyt im straight edge and i dont look down on other people. but i dont want your respect

  • @dfghgtyt alot of edgers DONT look down on other ppl

  • straight edge is just a label. you're not a better person just because you abstain. respect is earned through your actions in life and interactions with others. admiration is self destructive and idol's are just as addictive as what sxe is struggling against. "morally unarguable" is already a bs statement. the use of drugs is an amoral act. give it a few years and you'll figure it out - or you'll break. either way, who cares?

  • where is this from?

  • This is from a documentary called "Another State Of Mind". This is a small segment about Minor Threat but it is mostly about a tour that was done by Social Distortion and Youth Brigade in the summer of 1982.

  • Wouldn't it be awesome if Minor Threat got back together?

  • no not really. it's done and done. Almost 30 years broken up at this point. Let it go.

  • i love minor threats mentality i smoke cigs and weed but its just like me iv got my mind and i don't do much to interfear with education(not schooling) and i the stupid rhetoric pulsating through peoples mouths like diarrhea

  • they didnt like to get fucked up and rowdy but they had alot of fuckin fun im sure

  • I was never sXe but this band was way more than that!!! Fn' great!!!

  • The Mormons love this shit.

  • why did he hit the fans??? :S

  • My reasoning is; the fact that one has to chose is bullshit. If you're really straight edge its not even an option or a choice unless you are a jerk and full of shit. I am not straight edge nor do I ever chose to be. So, Bitch all you want. If you're straight edge... you won't give me shit and you will respect my choice. I respect people that are really straight edge... but if its a struggle... you know nothing about straight edge.

  • @ximiusz1

You're completely generalizing the concept of abstaining and being "straight edge". "the struggle" has so many different meanings for people. there are those who really want to change there old ways and stop doing drugs and drinking and that can be extremely difficult. others struggle with the isolation and loss of friends because of their choices. and the term straight edge itself, if you want to get technical, should only apply to those who truly follow punk rock and that lifestyle.

  • @ximiusz1

so FUCK you, if you honestly think that you somehow solely hold the punk rock straight edge manual in the palm of your hand. go suck on your own pompous dick. YOU have no clue what you're talking about.

  • If you're having a hard time being straight edge. You aren't straight edge. Its not about denying yourself drugs and stuff. It's about not wanting that kind of lifestyle at all. If you have a hard time resisting drugs/alcohol..etc.. you aren't straight edge. You're just trying to be something you're not.

  • WHAT THE F U C K IS YOUR REASONING! he probly more straight edge then you are, he has explored both paths and chose the healthier one, THAT is straight edge

  • Life is pain when you died thats when the pain ends..till that time Im gonna do all the drugs that I can get my hands on except for meth and herion..more drugs!!!

  • I'm 18 and straight edge. It's tough, I can tell you......

Btw Ian has the coolest speaking voice ;)

  • your totally right, keep goin, your way more straight edge then ian is if u got off drugs

  • Lol, I never was on drugs....

  • more straight edge than ian? its not a competition idiot, its being yourself and not being pressured into shit you don't believe in

  • @setyourschoolonfire jesus when did i say i was competing? All i said was that i was straight edge out of choice. People on youtube read what they want to read.

  • roastedlamp i wasn't talking to you dude... i thought johnnyupchuck's comment was pretty stupid, saying "your way more straight edge then ian"

  • Ok cool, I got the reply so I assumed it was for me.

  • punk's gotta be smart, that's the only way they can show people there not fuckin stupid, and give me a bad name

  • I love the part where Ian is forced to shout without the microphone and the whole room sings along. that's some dedication, I wish people would act this way at our shows...

  • maybe its just because your bands not that good or original

  • that was exact;y my point )

  • im not trying to be mean or be a asshole you know im just giving my opinion no harsh feeling man

  • no harm done, I did put a smiley there to show I wasn't offended )

  • At least I'm fuckn trying. What the fuck have you done?

  • I'm straight edge. I don't care if people do drugs or drink I just don't like it when people pressure other people to do drugs or drink in order to fit in.

it is punk because it's fighting against people telling you what to do...telling you to drink...telling you to do drugs...and it's just like "fuck you dude, I'm gonna do what I want and your not going to run my life."

  • i totally agree

    and im same sxe

  • what if u like to drink tho without peer pressure r u against that?

  • no. I don't care if people drink. if you drink your not straight edge but thats ok. just don't pressure me.

  • well i drink smoke but favorite band is minor threat

  • @i9incher Great way to think and talk about SxE! I'm SxE too for about 10 years and that's the same way that I think. It's a really great thing to see in other edge's.

  • @i9incher damn right,spot on there sir

  • Minor threat I saloot U !!

  • Comment removed

  • Actually, this is from the documentary State of Alert, featuring Youth Brigade (LA)

  • ACTUALLY, its ANOTHER STATE OF MIND. State Of Alert was a hardcore band.

  • i remember straight edge back in 1981/1982 when you had bands like youth of today and we all went around with a X on your left hand.

  • PLEASE correct me if I'm wrong, but were'nt Youth of Today part of the whole later 80's NY thing?

  • you are right haha.

  • I like Drinking

    I like Drugs

    I like Minor Threat

  • I like minor threat, I think they are what great punk rock is all about, but, why did they make up the "straight edge" thing?

I thought punk wasn't supposed to have rules?

  • i think they made the song about something else but related to what the straight edge is about. i think the fans took it too seriously though, i don't think the members themselves follow straight edge movement.

  • Well they actually they don't "Follow" the movement they lead it. Though they may not follow the movement, they live the lifestyle and that's what it's about. Not a trend or group or crew..but thinking for yourself. Whether you choose it or not, we all need to make our own choices that's the most important.

  • Yeah but the "rule" back then was all punks did drugs and got drunk, and EVERYONE started doing it because that's what "punks" did. So they did this sort of as a IN YOUR FACE, i'm still a punk and i'm sober. Also, it's not really a rule. It's a choice. No one NEEDS to be Edge, but some want to be.

  • Did you even listen to anything Ian said in this interview?

  • i agree, i like minor threat and i totally respect someones personal decisions regarding drinking and drug use, but i don't like strait edge, its not punk. Its to militant.

  • whats wrong with people being straight edge, its a choice, it doesnt take away the fact they were punks,

punks dont suppose to have jobs, and many punks over the years have or has had jobs.

arent punk against fitting in society???

  • i think it makes them more of a punk

because it's about challenging the system

  • i hate the arguement between sxe and those who aren't ppl who are sxe get my respect those and who are sxe and give me shit for having a beer and watching a show can get fucked from listening minor threat etc ive decided i can enjoy wat i want aslong as i don't fuck myself up or other ppl the best lesson to be learnt from hxc be true to yourself

  • that Baltimore show is such a great moment in punk's history. People... together.... amazing

  • Straight edge is pretty gay. Minor Threat is pretty awesome.

  • then you dont understand shit

  • The point of being straight edge isn't so you're beating the hell out of everybody who isn't like you, it's so you can thumb your nose at them and say "Ha, in ten years when I've got a good job you'll be in jail." Straight edge is a reaction to idiots who drink and smoke to extremes, not to people who go out to have a good time on a friday night. We just don't like the idiots throwing a bad name on the rest of us punks. True, we did start there, but we sure as hell ain't going back.

  • Comment removed

  • you don't agree with anything i have to say because you have no idea who the fuck i am.

so don't even stat acting like you know.

  • damn ...*start
