Doesn't really affect the environment? Coal contains mercury, lead, arsenic. And diesel engines produce a far greater amount of nitrogen oxides. Still, diesels are where the answer is, but going down the rod blowing black smoke in a truck that some hockey-puck thinks is a "race" truck only holds it back. A pulling/race truck is one thing, but on the street it's useless buffoonery.

The mining and refining process for lithium ion batts is where the environmental harm comes from. And most of the world's lithium deposits are in China and Bolivia. So hybrids just exchance a foreign oil dependancy for dependancy on another foreign resource. And lithium ion batts last longer than lead/acids, so they don't contribute to pullution as much as you'd think. All in all diesel/electric hybrid is where its at (e.g. locomotives). And lithium ion batteries aren't carcinogenic either.

im a diesel enthusiast and love cummins and all other diesels. but when people talk about how the black smoke falls to the earth just shows that people dont know anything about emissions.. their are other emissions coming out of the exhaust. its not just black smoke. NOX is the emission that create smog and diesels produce much more NOX than a gasoline engine. diesels are cleaner than gas motors in some ways and dirtier than others. know what youre talking about. dont just repeat what you hear!!

Before people head into anti-smoke mode, let me lay down a few facts. Fact 1 - The black smoke in most cases is unburnt diesel fuel. Most people see it as "power" but that isn't 100% true.

Fact 2 - The smoke is in fact coal, and will fall back to earth. It doesn't really effect the environment.

Fact 3 - Even though this looks much worse. A diesel engine produces 20-40% less pollution then a gasoline engine of the same size. And with bio-diesel, 85% less then gasoline of same engine size.

I'll bet it's either a 3208 Cat V-8 or possibly a Cat 3116 in-line 6-cylinder. Both of these are common mid-range engines found in class 6 (2-ton) trucks and CAN be squeezed into a pickup.

The 3208 V-8 Cat is a popular and very competitive engine in Modified Farm Tractor pulling.
