In the Candidates' matches leading up to the world championship against Spassky, Fischer annihilated the competition and established himself as the greatest chess player of all time, IMO. His whole life was chess and once he achieved the world title, he sort of cracked up and had no purpose in life. One of the more interesting, troubling characters in modern history.

@buzzbox2nd There are a lot of reasons why people hated him. Not because they are jealous. He was an anti semite, where in one public interview he called Jews 'filthy snakes'. He was a control freak demanding prize money to be doubled or else he wouldn't play. He had contempt for everybody around him and considered every one as worthless as fish. He was also very selfish, not attending his mother's funeral and dismissing the man who had treated him like a son because he was Jewish.

In the Candidates' matches leading up to the world championship against Spassky, Fischer annihilated the competition and established himself as the greatest chess player of all time, IMO. His whole life was chess and once he achieved the world title, he sort of cracked up and had no purpose in life. One of the more interesting, troubling characters in modern history.

The FIDE stripped him of the title he had devoted his entire life to earning and so angry, he walked away from the whole chess scene. I don't blame him one bit. Then when he finally did return to chess and played Spassky in a rematch, his own countries government destroyed Bobby's life. That he was very angry and bitter is understandable

I don't think anyone today can possibly appreciate the way this guy captured the imagination of the whole US back in 1972. He was a freakin rock star. He beat the Russians at their own game. When US schools began their fall 72 semesters, Chess clubs couldn't handle the mobs that signed up in the wake of his stunning victory.

Fischer is arguably the best chess player ever and the last human world chess champion. Since Kasparov, machines are better than humans. But because chess is cumulative, and Fischer was so much better in his day than every other major player, really, no one could touch him, he is arguably the best human player who ever lived. And that will never change no matter how long he is gone. He really did achieve immortality.

You have to understand that Fischer's IQ was around 190, much higher than Einstein's even, and with a mind that active and intelligent at times it can get frustrating thinking so much. Bobby was one against the world, David against Goliath, and with a single goal - to be World Champion. If you go back to one of his interviews with Dick Cavett, he casually states as much, though most didn't give it much thought at the time. Now, however, it makes perfect sense; that was his plan all along. Bobby did it his way! Got to respect and appreciate that.

Why continue to play when you are wealthy and the F.I.D.E. took away everything you had spent your life working for? What's the point? To spend your life attaining a goal, only to have it taken away? After that, there's no point. Many people retire at the top of their professions, this isn't unusual. Bobby had even more so of a reason to retire and do something else in life.

@Eaglessharp - The FIDE only failed to meet the demands of one World Champion in defending their title and that was Bobby Fischer's, which were very reasonable and logical demands. Indeed, the FIDE today uses the very same demands that Bobby had made, (and they refused to agree to), for the World Champion to defend their title. Again, Bobby didn't refuse to play, the FIDE wouldn't let him.

@TheSolipsist1 - think logically for a second: no matter WHAT you want to call it (genocide, ethnic cleansing, etc.), Fischer denied that it happened. So, if you want to have a lower-level argument about the name of the event, that's fine and everything. but the point is that despite the label you want to give it, anyone who denied/denies that it happened has been abandoned by intelligence.

@TheSolipsist1 hopefully you're only speaking in terms of chess. because if you aren't, i'm appalled that someone would present as "intelligent" the thought of "deep respect" for ANYONE who was in denial of the Holocaust. I do not hate Fischer, and am actually intrigued by his chess brilliance. However, it almost seems indefensible to say his intelligence went beyond the chess board.
