This guy is a boob. Uneducated and an obama lover. They past a health care bill thats going to destroy our doctors and our hospitals. You sir are a boob. We fail to see Obama and Reeds failures and as a result your commi professors ranked Obama as the 15th best president ever. What the hell were only half way through his office and already he's God all mighty
Jeffrey C Jones, the weather underground founder. If a person doesn't have insurance it is mandatory that they buy it. If they do not buy it they are fined 2.5% of their salary. If they fail to pay the fine they pay BOB $250k or face up to 5 years jailtime. You need to go suck on your mamas titty or grow up! You are a mama's boy!!!!!!!! Did you know that BOB is a homosexual? No wonder you are so fond of him. cba 1014
Harry Reid is the MAN! I did not think for a second the public option was going to get in the Senate version but it looks like it will be in. I am very proud of the progressives in Senate for fighting and continuing to fight for the public option. Human life should not be subjected to the profit motive of big business and shame on those politicians who still will not do the right thing and support the public option. I agree with Cenk Obama is the #1 goat on this issue.
Please convince me how government is better than big business?
Where does your confidence come from? I would love to be won over, but I dont see it. Our government has failed us on most all social programs - most being just a fraction of the size of this public health care.
Can you make me feel better by pointing out just a few government run programs that are efficiently run today?
Dont get me wrong, Im for reform, but changes in regulation and standards - not another gov social program.
Are you serious? that is the dumbest question ever....for the exact same reason your police, firefighters, etc are run by the government. Because healthcare should not be driven by profits, it is a life and death business that needs to provide. ie you cant trust big business to choose quality of life for everyone over their profits...further its only a public OPTION so what is your beef with it?
where do you see in the Constitution that as a citizen you have the right to HEALTHCARE,nowhere. It is not a right ,it is your right to be safe and pursue freedom and happiness. You kids need to realize that you are on your own and MOMMY isn't going to take care of you, growup moron
As far as "How are we going to fund the public option?" I read an interesting thing in Obama's book, "Audacity for Hope". Quote, pg. 225:
"Buffett's low rates were a consequence of the fact that, like most wealthy Americans, almost all of his income came from dividends and capital gains, investment income that since 2003 has been taxed at only 15%. The [Buffett's] receptionist's salary, on the other hand, was taxed at almost twice that rate..."
well, Cenk, maybe now you can see Obama has the right idea fighting for the trigger option instead of the "robust" public option. Dems do NOT have enough votes thanks to Lieberman.
You know the fact of the matter is that this is what we needed. We needed people to draw lines in the sand, demand the public option. If we gotta get Joe Liberman from screwing us over though.
did you know there have been estimates that if this health care takeover passes, over 20 MILLION people will die in the first year! how can liberals be so naieve to blindly support a totalitarian leader saying "wel save money by kiililng the elderly, children, and our political opponnents" if you want to know who the real heros are, its men like sen grassely, and grahm and people who look the fuhrer in the eye and say "no way in hell, will there be a government option"
Did you know that those estimates have been done by insurance companies and are as vallid as the studies by cigarrette companies claiming that smoking does not lead to cancer?
How much is it going to cost? Are we going to be paying 50% income tax or 60% for all the "free Government" programs? Healthcare isn't a right it is a responsibility. Remember what the Government gives the Government can take away. If they give you healthcare they take your hard earned dollars, they take your freedom to demand quality service. They take your freedom to choose what kind of care you want. They take profit incentive for advancement in technologies and medicine.
Robust Public Option ? Excuse Me ? this is the Robust Public Option that will only be available to those with no insurance (a good thing for sure) But if you are in one of those group plans thru your employer You're Not Eligible .. if you pay for your own insurance and want in to the Robust Public Option you're not eligible .... Harry Reid a Hero ? ... NOT HERE !!!
harry reid voted for bailouts. how is that representing "the people"? anyone who voted for the bailouts should be voted out of office in 2010, no exceptions.
If I was cashing in my chips slowly from cancer I do believe I would pay a visit to some of these blue dog traitors and make stopping their resistance to the public option my parting gift to America's most important class - the working class.
This is just my thought and i could be wrong But maybe Obama and his cabinet thought it would be better for the country if the people they elected to represent their opinion in congress were the actual heart of the change he promised. his platform was that of governmental change not just the position and authority of the president. He wanted congress to shake the rust off and actually DO something that benefits the country. He as the president should not have had to But hey you never know.
Bush couldn't pass gas. This is going to happen - Obama's team is just being careful. The right wing has demonstrated how disloyal and dangerous to America they are, and will do anything to stop help getting to the American people.
Well we cant expect obama to none stop push for this plan and everything else at the same time. Im sure he is trying his best but only time will tell. I do think he could have supporting the public option better. There are alot of other politicians who also have earned credit for there great work to get this plan passed.
But i just want to get this plan passed so obama can do more about fixing the economy and other issius. I do expect more to be done once this plan gets passed.
The press pushing a lead on a closed session is bunk.
I heard he said nothing in the meeting, and Emanuel does not speak for Obama.
We dont know what Obama says off the record, what we do know on the record is that hes always pushing the public option.
He even said the same week he made the school speech, that he wouldnt sign something without apublic option, and hes often discussed that the power of it isin having a large pool, and a trigger is like not having one anyway.
The first time that I have really disagreed with TYTs. This is not a strong version of the public option. As I understand it, only the uninsured can opt in and that's only if their state will allow it. The public option only works if it allows people into the program. Otherwise why would insurance companies care about the public option if no one could get into it? This is not a change from insurance monopolies. This is a another chance at reform that looks like it will fall WAY SHORT. Again.
If strong is 10 and weak is 1, the current option as I hear it is a 5.
Its opt out and I hope I am hearin right that the states cant opt out for a year.
That its for the uninsured just about kills it, as it kills diversity of its pool.
The uninsured will use it the most right now as most are probably mostly sick or been waiting for the ability to see a doctor for checkups after years.
Many uninsured wont likely have the money anyway and will have to be subsidized.
Snowe is looking to protect herself in the next election. It will be interesting to see if being a coward helps or hurts her.
Joe "I"m a total sellout" Leiberman has to be removed from any committee if he joins the GOP in delaying or stopping a public option. He serves no purpose whatsoever and I blame Obama for not shiving him after the election.
I don't like the idea of donating.... seriously politicians should not be all about money they should focus on doing the right thing for free.... that should be reward enough... I guess i am asking for too much lol....
I wouldn't be so quick to denounce Obama as #1 goat. It seems Obama has a good political inside game. What he wanted from June/July onward was a public option. Whether that would result in the Baucus bill or public option depended entirely on the Senate and the outside game (the American people). The louder our voices, the more likely public option would pass. On the record, Obama admin. is tied down by the trigger because that's what they have agreed with the insurance co. But off the record...
Even if it passes, the bad thing is that the crook states that opt out will have to screw their people for a while until they can't deny their failure anymore.
well i dont no if he mentioned it in this vid but medicade or medicare was able to be opt out if not both and all states now have it so some states might be slow but they will catch up
Are you being sarcastic about Harry Reid? He's the biggest pussy in pussy land. The fucking state by state opt out makes it fucking useless. Fuck Harry, fuck that bastard. Harry Reid did *not* do a great job.
I've had it with the BS of "they just don't have the votes." Well, why not? Because they are bought off? Screw that! Why do we just accept that? The insurance companies got their "votes" in before the election. That is not a valid reason to "not have the votes" for what the people want and need. How many decades more are we gonna justify profits over lives with political mealy-mouthing? Vote out anyone who obstructs public option.
Rahm KNOWS how the House works. Rahm has been in the grit and grind of plitical negotiations for year.
As much as "progressives" try to tout things, Rahm KNOWS a big chunk of the Democratic majority was built through the Blue Dog Caucus, and bloc of, primarily, rural and Southern Democrats.
Rahm knows how far he can push votes before he starts risking people's seat in Congress. he understands that the Senate has similar dynamics.
Cenk is not seeing big picture in that this would have all been impossible without Obama working behind the scenes. The community organizer in Obama is the trait he used to this done. I'm guessing one of the primary rules in community organization is to have the major participants gain "buy in" by going through the difficult machinations to get something like this done. Once that is done, they're bought into the fight. The dems have now defined their position not its time to slam it home.
But isn't this public option only for those who don't already have crappy insurance and isn't only if your state accepts it? This is a half-assed option.
I don't know about the only for people with crappy insurance but the state accepting it is actually great. If the public option does well in the liberal states, you think the people in conservative states won't get pissed? If it doesn't work than states can opt out of it. I think this is a great show of democracy funcitoning. I truly believe it will work, but if you don't then don't opt in. Then you'll have to answer to your voters
And, as the vote count has already shown, Sen. Lieberman is not on board with the idea yet, and Sens. Landreiu, Lincoln, Nelson, and Pryor are still on the fence, for even breaking the procedural cloture vote, let alone voting for the "public option"
It's always been simple math, and it will always be simple math.
i have to admit it's annoying to hear cenk keep calling harry reid the 'lion of the senate' so soon after ted kennedy died... u dont just pass a title like that around to whoever does their job...
what i've realized about TYT is that cenk has his very own dittoheads....who believe everything he says without questioning it or thinking for themselves....cenk has been trying to find new ways to bash obama for months now....i criticized TYT's coverage of obama's healthcare speeches...refusing to show them if they contradicted what cenk had predicted...trying desperately to dissect them and draw conclusions to fit a narrative of failure....now he doesn't give him credit...and his dittos agree
What about Obama? He campaigned and pushed for it. Without him this health care battle wouldn't take place. Hillary and McCain would have never done anything if they were elected.
wdgeo! That's clever great argument you are a sad person hope you like what you get prolly dont work and need to have us pay for you to live as it is but its ok I went to work today so No worries you still will get you welfare check so dont freak out however you could say thank you! lloll
Obama needs to stand up and be forceful. If he thinks kissing big corporations asses is going to help him get by, hes got another thing coming. It's political suicide to waffle. The Republicans are a classic case of what happens to those who don't listen to the people that elected them.. The bus is pulling out of the station, but if Obama runs there is still time to get on board
WHAT A victory for the government and the insurance company's They are so great in doing what is right for people who's fooling who the attorney thank you very much CANT WAIT for this great plan that will be so wonderful you FOOLS!
HAHAHAHAHA, do you realize how dumb you are? Point one, the right never gives obama any credit. point two, Cenk DOES give obama credit at times. point 3, you're dumb brain, if you have one. Assumes that if ONE time, someone doesn't give Obama credit. That equates to NEVER giving Obama credit. Do you realize how stupid you are?
Burris was pretty damn critical to this for one major reason: He has nothing left to lose. Due to his connection with Blago, he isn't going to get re-elected (and I'm pretty sure he isn't even running again).
Behold, the power of the One Term Man, who can't become a career politician, so he decides, instead, to do what is right.
He had no chance of being elected in the first place, silly. The seat will probably go to a moderate Chicago collar county GOP hack with ties downstate, or to Jackson Jr depending upon how the wind blows between now and then.
Did it not happen that the moment Grayson came out with his "controversial" attacks on the Republicans, the White House bitch slapped Fox News. I think that was a message in burning letters a mile high to everyone in the Dems about exactly where Obama saw the Public option. I think Obama understands that the role of the President should be direction rather than doing all the work.
PainterofYou - don't blame the doctors - your E.R. bill wasn't for you - it was to pay for our crap health care system where the six people before you couldn't pay. They should have been seen three weeks ago and treated much cheaper at a clinic, but that wasn't an option for them, so they ended up in the E.R. after they got really sick.
You're also paying for the doctors getting raped by the same insurance companies that are raping us - would you like to pay $100k for malpractice insurance?
chainspunk, you are obviously a troll, or the local village idiot. The general welfare is completely constitutional, and if the health of the citizens isn't general welfare, then nothing is.
Whatever your racist ass may feel about "lazy black people" or "scumsucking immigrants" the fact is that the biggest beneficiaries of health care reform are the hard-working Americans who pay outrageous insurance premiums, only to find that they get denied when their kid gets cancer or diabetes.
Fuck Obama. Let's pass this public option and get that big-eared bitch out of office in 2012. OK, I know I'm overexagerating here; we can't elect a Republican neo-con wing-nut either. But, Christ almighty, when are we going to get a leader with a spine who knows how to do more than play politics? Someone willing to make the right choices and represent the voice of the people. Like all the other crooks, Obama's a pawn to industry lobbyists. He's not a leader. He's a good politician and that's it.
chainspell (cs): What you idiots don't seem to understand is, the public option will forced the health industry to go bankrupt.
KosmicCitizen (KC): IF that's what happens, then it is quite meet and just. It would certainly refute the right-wing/capitalist rhetoric about the inherent inferiority of public works.
Right wingers only have money for taking lives, not saving or improving them.
Obama has been a big let down really, he's broken most of his campaign promises already. He keeps talking about ending DADT but zero action, not even a letter to the jont chiefs to susspend it.
And he has been nothing but weak sauce on health care reform, he promised big reform, then bent over for the republicans.
We get this passed it will be because of the strong progressives in congress, not Obama's weak ass white house.
Xenite227, you're a big let down really. Seriously, you fail at civics. Are you even aware that DADT isn't an executive order? It's law - USC 654 - which means that you need to be leaning on your congresscritters instead of blaming President Obama every time your toast gets burned. The executive branch, in our country, can't simply rewrite legislation - no matter what the last eight years led you to believe.
chainspell, are you stupid or just pretending? Your derogatory comment about "lazy blacks" is obviously racist.
Whining about conservative persecution - please! As if you're a fucking conservative. You're a Glenn Beck fan who's all of about 12 years old and you don't know the meaning of the concept at all.
we actually have a public option in germany and OH MY GOD!!! the health care industry is ok, people don't die, because they don't have health insurance and health care is fast and efficient
"the public option will force the health industry to go bankrupt" lol i was right when i said you are a motherfucker silver spoon sassy ass. i guess your the dirty lawyer for health industry.
chainpell you not force to buy the healthcare please, you have a choice now, you either choose your private insurance or Gov run health system, just like Canada and many other countries, unless you have a silver spoon life, i think most american want public option.
Fuck you're dumb, almost as dumb as the Republican corporate whores. If you're country had two shits worth of a brain they'd at least emulate the Canadian Health Care system, where you have public coverage but you can also get private insurance if you want. Fuckin' hillbillies are ruining it for Americans. Lead, follow, OR GET OUT OF THE WAY you stooge.
If Harry Reid gets the public option, it would guarantee him re-election. Americans are sick of being held hostage to Health Insurance fat cats. Bring on some real competition.
You forgot Jane Hamsher of Firedoglake. She did the whip counts and the fund raising for the House progressives to stand up and show the Senate progressives how it is done and that if they passed something crappy, the House would make sure they got nothing at all.
Yep, mmmtoblerone, Jane Hamsher is a four-star general in this war. It's not surprising, given her personal history with cancer, but she's still a hero who may help save many American lives.
Yeah Cenk definitely forgot Max Baucus being a huge goat. Good thing his bill got crushed. Obama was just a compromising pussy as usual, but Baucus was selling out on a whole other level.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Why don't Cenk shut the fuck up who cares about his list he don't know what the fuck went on behinds the scene!~ Cenk you should wonder WHY you've never had the chance to interview Obama and you never will!~ A few weeks ago you were sitting throwing bitch fits about we wasn't getting it and now you sitting with your bottle in your mouth shittin in your pamper shut the fuck up!~
Boy, we sure throw around the title "Hero" loosely these days don't we.
These guys (Politicians in general both Dem & Repub) have done a bang up job bankrupting SS, Medicare, Medicaid, the Post office, destroying the dollar, and everything else they get their hands on. I just can't wait.
Guys! The #1 goat is Max Baucus! HOW can you forget him? If priority #1 is getting Reid in again, priority # 2 is getting the most paid for man in Congress out!
Reid's gotta go. Looks like that won't be a problem. He needed all the help he could get from progressives so he went and shot them in the back for Lieberman and Obama. That's okay, though. I'm sure he can get a great lobbying job based on what a great job he's already done in that regard.
reid is 20 points down in the polls and is dead in the 2010 election, but so are many other odumba congress members. This administration is the result of affirmative action and what a failure they are, including the demander in chief
Take Obamas dick out of your mouth, youre mumbling.
Seriously why dont you just go marry the guy or at least get a hotel room and get it over with ? Youre a fucking MORON and thats putting it nicely. Why dont you take your two remaining brain cells and go jump off a bridge somewhere
Obama's public health care speech was very powerful, but then after that he didn't say a damn word about it.. and that was that. But whoa shit, Obama is wondering how the hell he's gonna pull off Act ll of this play we call politics. He has really stirred up the shit now. He can always trade in is Nobel Peace Prize for a Survivor immunity token.
I'm sorry but Harry Reid is not that great in my opinion. The public option he put is still not even really an option for most people. Someone on MSNBC said it great. 'As it stands the public option is going to be a health insurance ghetto'. Besides he was so weak he not only was not able to stop Bush's agenda from going through he couldn't even slow it down even WHEN the dems controlled the senate!
Not the public option I'm sure you're used to (wherever you're from). Ours will still require monthly payments. I'm in favor of going all out of a single-payer system, but the public option would be a cheaper insurance option, it will ultimately create competition and force private insurers to lower their premiums, and will be very beneficial to a lot of people.
Recently i discovered that the public option, which we all pay via our taxes, in my country is way cheaper than what you guys pay for health insurance in America. If you take the total cost of hospitals aso for a year in Denmark, and divide it by the number of people living here, it amounts to about 1500$ pr person pr year.
Bearing in mind that everyone can get treated, that noone gets thrown out ever, that's pretty good. knowing that americans fearing "socialist ways" look down right stupid.
jo05dk - Everyone knows that all you Scandinavians are socialist commie fascists who slave 90 hours a week for the government. Every one knows that capitalism fails in Scandinavian countries - otherwise, you'd have good capitalist corporations like Ikea, Lego, Absolut, Volvo, Ericsson and Nokia.
Yep - too bad you socialist Scandinavian commies don't have any good corporations like those.
In America, we've got GM (bailout) AND crap health care - beat that!
if u like fascism, youll love obama. walmart loves it for example. shift working poor onto tax rolls , take away their corporate funded benefits, and compel by force 199 m poeople to buy insurance from the insurance cartel. hitler mussulini would love it as would the nazi young turks of bnai brith that shoved the armenians into the death camps.
abdignazi, given your embarrassingly obvious illiteracy, it's no surprise that you're so completely clueless about the benefits of health care that isn't held hostage by greed-crazed pricks like William McGuire of United Health ($110 million salary - $1.2 billion golden parachute)
You know, you're also "compelled by force" to fund the police, fire department, public roads and schools - I'm guessing you're against those, too, right?
47 Thanks man, i needed that:-) Best part was that i started reading your comment and went "WTF", and then got to the last part. Kinda threw me for a loop there, great stuff:)
How is this strength on Harry Reid's part? He got hit in his own state and he caved. Caving to the people you are supposed to represent may be the right thing to do, but it is not a sign of strength.
on dailykos they've compiled a list of all the media talking heads and progressive chicken littles who proclaimed the public option dead....i'm gunna add cenk to the list....he still refuses to give obama any credit....it's shameful
Cenk is being very shortsided. President Obama deserves some credit for working hard on this issue. We need to keep working hard. This is a good step in the right direction.
All the men who helped bring the Public Option are ALL Sarah Palin's DICKLESS and BALLESS BITCHES and PUSSIES! Palin is a SUPERIOR politician and statesman than these ass-clowns could ever be. She is also MORE MAN than they are for they all wear the skirts in their families while their wives wear the pants!
lets examine this...what's more likely ?...that "president" rahm emmanuel...as cenk and his lib buddies proclaimed.....was somehow miraculously "defeated" by an army of bloggers and weak ass harry reid....or that obama and his genius strategy of marginalizing his opponents...and exposing them as the party of no ideas...paid off...and allowed him to go foward with his agenda...earning broad support of the american people in the process...against the insurance industry....i think it's pretty clear
id rather hear a debate to what the benfits of a public option are. what are the cons. i don't know what the public option is. what i hear is that WITH a PO, the people will be able to choose to keep their current situation with or without insurance. then i hear that they are still gonna mandate people buy health insurance. i not even sure about this particular issue. it seems flimsy in priority compared to the endless wars and corrupt twits running the economy.
A public option is a government offered insurance a consumer can purchase. Since it is offered by the government, there is no need to advertise and market, so there is little overhead, making it cheaper than private insurance. There is also no pre-existing bull. Nevertheless, if you like your current private insurance, you can keep it. The mandated coverage thing is in the Finance bill, which may or may not make it in.
The Mandated coverage thing is separate from the Public Option. If there is a Public Option, then nearly everyone could afford Health Insurance, and the mandated coverage would further cheapen the price. Without the Public Option, private insurance would have no competition, and mandated coverage would just fatten their wallets.
And flimsy? 45,000 people die every year because they don't have health insurance. People like me, die because of the greed of one industry.
Raizhen: But what is "affordable" in terms of the public option? I'm not eligible for medicaid because I make too much money, but there is no way I can afford to pay $200 a month for insurance either. Do you know if this will be run exactly like a private insurance co? Will there be in/out-of network doctors, deductibles, selective service coverage? I have a feeling this is going to be a lot of nothing important.
It will not be run like a private insurance company. Again, there are no pre-existing conditions, and no overhead. There is no need for the government to advertise, meaning 100% of the premiums will go to actual medical care. If you can't afford the public option, there are government susidies to help this. There are talks of expanding Medicaid as well. The Public Option will compete with Private Insurance, forcing a drop in their prices as well. The status quo is simply unnacceptable.
Well, I'm for the single-payer option, but I guess this is a step in the right direction. At least I hope it is. I am reluctant to get too excited about it. Especially considering it is going to take years before it takes effect.
I absolutely agree. A single-payer is the best idea, but there isn't the political will right now, as much as I hate to admit that. Still, the public option is a step in the right direction. I believe the Public Option would go into effect 2013, but I'm not entirely positive.
Oh please, Rahm isn't running any kinda show. It's TYT's opinion that he's some sort of Dick Cheney but don't just follow mindlessly. Think about it a bit and you'll see how silly that seems.
Yes, politics is dirty but this bullshit of Rahm being some sort of defacto President is horse shit.
harry reid is gettin tooooo much credit. it was the "people" who made the phone calls and emailed and wrote letters to thier state reps and senators.harry reid had to be have a couple limbs broken befoe he cracked under the pressure of the people
Cenk is generalizing too much. This situation was complicated from the beginning. No one should get rewarded until the final bill with a decent public option is passed and signed into law!
Cenk, if Obama had drawn a line in the sand, had he fought violently for the public option - it would NOT exist. You think Reid did this because he cared? No, he did it because he knew he could take the lead and get the credit, which you foolishly gave him.
Obama white house sat back smartly. Healthcare would be totaled if not for that.
Why is it everyone in politics has a memory of a month? Carter, Clinton BOTH made that mistake Cenk.
it's because cenk is playing checkers and obama is playing chess...i've noticed this going back to obama's campaign...cenk is overly emotional...short cited...overly crtitical of obama...and quick to write him off...he never wants to give obama credit for his strategy working...and will never admit he made a mistake...i don't understand how anyone could think harry reid deserves all the credit and obama is the goat....it's more like obama is the chessmaster...and reid is the pawn who gets credit
Absolutely. I think this is a very real possibility. I think he is a great enough man to let someone like Reid take the credit and encourage the whole strategy BEHIND THE SCENES.
Oh give me a fucking break jshooper. I voted for Obama, I generally like him, but don't pretend this was all in his grand "plan". He cowered and compromised and conceded to republicans, but not enough democrats were willing to go along with it, and that's why the public option is alive. Not because Obama is playing "chess". Get over it. Your hero is not delivering on his promises. His fellow democrats are doing the work for him.
I agree, JWDaly08. Obama gets zero credit for this. All he's done since arriving in office is try his best to stand on the fence and make everyone happy, even when that means promoting watered-dawn bills that change nothing (or make things worse). At the very most, Obama gets credit for making healthcare reform a key issue, but that's it. He's been the lobbyists' bitch all along despite having incredible support by the American people, not to mention a robust majority in the House and Senate.
JODaly - it amazes me that you can have a nick so close to "Daley" and be so clueless about the ruthlessness and strategy of Chicago and Illinois politics - Obama's cradle and nursery.
Maybe it's because after the last eight years, we expect the president to be the intellectual equivalent of the third-shift manager at Blockbusters, but looking at his Illinois career, this man is moving pieces on the board that his opponents don't even see.
whatever..OBAMA IS PLAYING CHESS..just because you can't see...or don't wanna see something...doesn't mean it isn't happening right before your eyes...its ironic that when the senate finance comm. was drafting the piece of shit bill....everyone instantly wanted to attribute it to obama....now that something good has happened you don't give him any credit...and he had nothing to do with it...and instead give credit to harry reid !!! ?....fucking pathetic....people are exposing themselves in this
Yeah. Obama is. He's not pushing for what everyone wants. He's done some good things but we're just pointing it out when he's not on the ball. We're just trying to push him in the right direction.
If this is as hard as Obama can push than he's one of the weakest presidents we've ever had. He says he'd like a public option and that's as hard as he's pushed so far. Nothing's going to happen unless these politicians put some pressure on each other and we do the same.
This guy is a boob. Uneducated and an obama lover. They past a health care bill thats going to destroy our doctors and our hospitals. You sir are a boob. We fail to see Obama and Reeds failures and as a result your commi professors ranked Obama as the 15th best president ever. Where does your confidence come from? I would love to be won over, but I dont see it. Our government has failed us on most all social programs - most being just a fraction of the size of this public health care.
Can you make me feel better by pointing out just a few government run programs that are efficiently run today?
Dont get me wrong, Im for reform, but changes in regulation and standards - not another gov social program.
fargley001 2 years ago
Are you serious? that is the dumbest question ever....for the exact same reason your police, firefighters, etc are run by the government. Because healthcare should not be driven by profits, it is a life and death business that needs to provide. ie you cant trust big business to choose quality of life for everyone over their profits...further its only a public OPTION so what is your beef with it?

As far as "How are we going to fund the public option?" I read an interesting thing in Obama's book, "Audacity for Hope". Quote, pg. 225:
"Buffett's low rates were a consequence of the fact that, like most wealthy Americans, almost all of his income came from dividends and capital gains, investment income that since 2003 has been taxed at only 15%. The [Buffett's] receptionist's salary, on the other hand, was taxed at almost twice that rate..."
Simple. We tax the rich to give to the poor!!!
MLadyAzzera 2 years ago
well, Cenk, maybe now you can see Obama has the right idea fighting for the trigger option instead of the "robust" public option. Dems do NOT have enough votes thanks to Lieberman.

did you know there have been estimates that if this health care takeover passes, over 20 MILLION people will die in the first year! how can liberals be so naieve to blindly support a totalitarian leader saying "wel save money by kiililng the elderly, children, and our political opponnents" if you want to know who the real heros are, its men like sen grassely, and grahm and people who look the fuhrer in the eye and say "no way in hell, will there be a government option"

They take profit incentive for advancement in technologies and medicine.
quizerry 2 years ago
The public option is set to run independently of taxes and entirely by premiums paid. So if you're not participating you see none of the costs.
So there you go it's not free. And if the govt can't make it work more efficiently than the insurance companies out the door it goes.

The press pushing a lead on a closed session is bunk.
I heard he said nothing in the meeting, and Emanuel does not speak for Obama.
We dont know what Obama says off the record, what we do know on the record is that hes always pushing the public option.
He even said the same week he made the school speech, that he wouldnt sign something without apublic option, and hes often discussed that the power of it isin having a large pool, and a trigger is like not having one anyway.
waltermh111 2 years ago
The first time that I have really disagreed with TYTs. This is not a strong version of the public option. As I understand it, only the uninsured can opt in and that's only if their state will allow it. The public option only works if it allows people into the program. Otherwise why would insurance companies care about the public option if no one could get into it? This is not a change from insurance monopolies. This is a another chance at reform that looks like it will fall WAY SHORT. Again.
marley54fd 2 years ago 4
The whole public option thing is compromise. It is an improvement, but it is a far cry from what the rest of the western world has.

Apparently Cenk doesn't.
scipio2009 2 years ago
Cenk is not seeing big picture in that this would have all been impossible without Obama working behind the scenes. The community organizer in Obama is the trait he used to this done. I'm guessing one of the primary rules in community organization is to have the major participants gain "buy in" by going through the difficult machinations to get something like this done. Once that is done, they're bought into the fight. The dems have now defined their position not its time to slam it home.
WWJCashD 2 years ago
But isn't this public option only for those who don't already have crappy insurance and isn't only if your state accepts it? This is a half-assed option.
Ikemxx 2 years ago
I don't know about the only for people with crappy insurance but the state accepting it is actually great. If the public option does well in the liberal states, you think the people in conservative states won't get pissed? If it doesn't work than states can opt out of it. I think this is a great show of democracy funcitoning. I truly believe it will work, but if you don't then don't opt in. Then you'll have to answer to your voters
Xaklyth 2 years ago

Honestly?
This is getting pretty fucking ridiculous. The fact of the situation is that 60 votes aren't there for this public option, to vote against cloture.
Congratulations, you've nuked the bill.
So much for Democrats actually showing that government can pass something.
The President knows this, and it's funny how delusional the "left" is on this matter.
The votes aren't there, and there really isn't the pressure to make them magically appear.
scipio2009 2 years ago
lol
And, as the vote count has already shown, Sen. Lieberman is not on board with the idea yet, and Sens. Landreiu, Lincoln, Nelson, and Pryor are still on the fence, for even breaking the procedural cloture vote, let alone voting for the "public option"
It's always been simple math, and it will always be simple math.

And he has been nothing but weak sauce on health care reform, he promised big reform, then bent over for the republicans.
We get this passed it will be because of the strong progressives in congress, not Obama's weak ass white house.

Xenite227, you're a big let down really. Seriously, you fail at civics. Are you even aware that DADT isn't an executive order? grungefuck 2 years ago 4
Not the public option I'm sure you're used to (wherever you're from). Ours will still require monthly payments. I'm in favor of going all out of a single-payer system, but the public option would be a cheaper insurance option, it will ultimately create competition and force private insurers to lower their premiums, and will be very beneficial to a lot of people.
dustinjt 2 years ago
Recently i discovered that the public option, which we all pay via our taxes, in my country is way cheaper than what you guys pay for health insurance in America. If you take the total cost of hospitals aso for a year in Denmark, and divide it by the number of people living here, it amounts to about 1500$ pr person pr year.
Bearing in mind that everyone can get treated, that noone gets thrown out ever, that's pretty good. knowing that americans fearing "socialist ways" look down right stupid.

You know, you're also "compelled by force" to fund the police, fire department, public roads and schools - I'm guessing you're against those, too, right?

How is this strength on Harry Reid's part? He got hit in his own state and he caved. Caving to the people you are supposed to represent may be the right thing to do, but it is not a sign of strength.

on dailykos they've compiled a list of all the media talking heads and progressive chicken littles who proclaimed the public option dead....i'm gunna add cenk to the list....he still refuses to give obama any credit....it's shameful
jshooper 2 years ago
I don't disagree that it costs too much, that's why
i really want the public option so I can afford insurance instead of getting charged $200/month for minimum coverage

obama opted out for the sake of being "nonpartisan" which was stupid, he should have helped Harry more.

Cenk is being very shortsided. President Obama deserves some credit for working hard on this issue. We need to keep working hard. This is a good step in the right direction.

Cenk is be very shortsided. President Obama do deserve some credit for some of the progress on the Public Option.

All the men who helped bring the Public Option are ALL Sarah Palin's DICKLESS and BALLESS BITCHES and PUSSIES! Palin is a SUPERIOR politician and statesman than these ass-clowns could ever be. She is also MORE MAN than they are for they all wear the skirts in their families while their wives wear the pants!

lets examine this...what's more likely ?...that "president" rahm emmanuel...as cenk and his lib buddies proclaimed.....was somehow miraculously "defeated" by an army of bloggers and weak ass harry reid....or that obama and his genius strategy of marginalizing his opponents...and exposing them as the party of no ideas...paid off...and allowed him to go foward with his agenda...earning broad support of the american people in the process...against the insurance industry....i think it's pretty clear
jshooper 2 years ago
This is BS "Large businesses would not be required to provide insurance to their workers" this better not be in the final bill.
RealLifeProduct 2 years ago
id rather hear a debate to what the benfits of a public option are. what are the cons. i don't know what the public option is. what i hear is that WITH a PO, the people will be able to choose to keep their current situation with or without insurance. then i hear that they are still gonna mandate people buy health insurance. i not even sure about this particular issue. it seems flimsy in priority compared to the endless wars and corrupt twits running the economy.
Justice4all311 2 years ago
A public option is a government offered insurance a consumer can purchase. Since it is offered by the government, there is no need to advertise and market, so there is little overhead, making it cheaper than private insurance. There is also no pre-existing bull. Nevertheless, if you like your current private insurance, you can keep it. The mandated coverage thing is in the Finance bill, which may or may not make it in.
Raizhen010 2 years ago
The Mandated coverage thing is separate from the Public Option. If there is a Public Option, then nearly everyone could afford Health Insurance, and the mandated coverage would further cheapen the price. Without the Public Option, private insurance would have no competition, and mandated coverage would just fatten their wallets.
And flimsy? 45,000 people die every year because they don't have health insurance. People like me, die because of the greed of one industry.
Raizhen010 2 years ago
Raizhen: But what is "affordable" in terms of the public option? I'm not eligible for medicaid because I make too much money, but there is no way I can afford to pay $200 a month for insurance either. Do you know if this will be run exactly like a private insurance co? Will there be in/out-of network doctors, deductibles, selective service coverage? I have a feeling this is going to be a lot of nothing important.
july7nyc 2 years ago
It will not be run like a private insurance company. Again, there are no pre-existing conditions, and no overhead. There is no need for the government to advertise, meaning 100% of the premiums will go to actual medical care. If you can't afford the public option, there are government susidies to help this. There are talks of expanding Medicaid as well. The Public Option will compete with Private Insurance, forcing a drop in their prices as well. The status quo is simply unnacceptable.
Raizhen010 2 years ago 2
Well, I'm for the single-payer option, but I guess this is a step in the right direction. At least I hope it is. I am reluctant to get too excited about it. Especially considering it is going to take years before it takes effect.
july7nyc 2 years ago 2
I absolutely agree. A single-payer is the best idea, but there isn't the political will right now, as much as I hate to admit that. Still, the public option is a step in the right direction. I believe the Public Option would go into effect 2013, but I'm not entirely positive.

Oh please, Rahm isn't running any kinda show. It's TYT's opinion that he's some sort of Dick Cheney but don't just follow mindlessly. Think about it a bit and you'll see how silly that seems.
Yes, politics is dirty but this bullshit of Rahm being some sort of defacto President is horse shit.

Cenk is generalizing too much. This situation was complicated from the beginning. No one should get rewarded until the final bill with a decent public option is passed and signed into law!
lovejangie1 2 years ago 2
Yeah. I agree. The celebration is a little premature. If anything this could be a bit of appeasement without actually delivering anything in the end.
lonelygreenteagirlie 2 years ago
One star for Cenk STILL not getting it.
AustralianStallion90 2 years ago 5
it's because cenk is playing checkers and obama is playing chess...i've noticed this going back to obama's campaign...cenk is overly emotional...short cited...overly crtitical of obama...and quick to write him off...he never wants to give obama credit for his strategy working...and will never admit he made a mistake...i don't understand how anyone could think harry reid deserves all the credit and obama is the goat....it's more like obama is the chessmaster...and reid is the pawn who gets credit
jshooper 2 years ago 3
Absolutely. I think this is a very real possibility. I think he is a great enough man to let someone like Reid take the credit and encourage the whole strategy BEHIND THE SCENES.
pipersall 2 years ago
Oh give me a fucking break jshooper. I voted for Obama, I generally like him, but don't pretend this was all in his grand "plan". He cowered and compromised and conceded to republicans, but not enough democrats were willing to go along with it, and that's why the public option is alive. Not because Obama is playing "chess". Get over it. Your hero is not delivering on his promises. His fellow democrats are doing the work for him.
JWDaly08 2 years ago 2
I agree, JWDaly08. Obama gets zero credit for this. All he's done since arriving in office is try his best to stand on the fence and make everyone happy, even when that means promoting watered-dawn bills that change nothing (or make things worse). At the very most, Obama gets credit for making healthcare reform a key issue, but that's it. He's been the lobbyists' bitch all along despite having incredible support by the American people, not to mention a robust majority in the House and Senate.
dookdawg214 2 years ago
JODaly - it amazes me that you can have a nick so close to "Daley" and be so clueless about the ruthlessness and strategy of Chicago and Illinois politics - Obama's cradle and nursery.
Maybe it's because after the last eight years, we expect the president to be the intellectual equivalent of the third-shift manager at Blockbusters, but looking at his Illinois career, this man is moving pieces on the board that his opponents don't even see.
47f0 2 years ago
whatever..OBAMA IS PLAYING CHESS..just because you can't see...or don't wanna see something...doesn't mean it isn't happening right before your eyes...its ironic that when the senate finance comm. was drafting the piece of shit bill....everyone instantly wanted to attribute it to obama....now that something good has happened you don't give him any credit...and he had nothing to do with it...and instead give credit to harry reid !!! ?....fucking pathetic....people are exposing themselves in this
jshooper 2 years ago
Yeah. Obama is. He's not pushing for what everyone wants. He's done some good things but we're just pointing it out when he's not on the ball. We're just trying to push him in the right direction.
Tylonous 2 years ago 2
Count the votes, and you'd see that he's pushing about as far as he can go.
Unlike a lot of politicians, he'd be happier with getting a win and 80% of what he wants, rather than losing with 100% of what he would've requested.
scipio2009 2 years ago
If this is as hard as Obama can push than he's one of the weakest presidents we've ever had. He says he'd like a public option and that's as hard as he's pushed so far. Nothing's going to happen unless these politicians put some pressure on each other and we do the same.
