@jmurray1157 I ever remember a Golden Horn bar in Hollywood. I know most of the bars shown in the opening sequence are not even there anymore. Crabby Joes is still there downtown. I think the Golden Horn was based on the King Eddy Saloon downtown. There is also the Golden Gopher downtown which is now a horrid "hipster" joint.
@jmurray1157 I meant that I DONT EVER remember a Golden Horn bar anywhere in LA. Doesnt mean there wasnt one but I think its fictional. These locations for this movie were pretty much all downtown and just west of downtown.
And as far as Bukowski thinking Rourke was not right for it, he would have likely thought no one to be right for it. It was in his analytical and slightly egotistical nature to think that way.
I don't think he fell short at all. He played quite the majestic bum. It's no surprise he did not appear on screen as Bukowski himself, as he is not Bukowski. This is one of, if not THE, best performance of his career.
Mickey gave it his best but he falls short IMHO. I woulda cast someone else. Somebody older... Nick Nolte (doin his crazy Down n Out in Beverly Hills schtick) woulda been perfect. :D Or a fu%$ed up Ed harris or maybe even a Lebowski style Jeff Bridges dude!
mickey did aq good job but hes an ass, bukowski didnt like his job, wanted an older guy aswell doing it... mickey said after that he was ok for a drunk, but at the time every sshole rom hollywood was kissing his feet just the reality of these "fools made into rich heroes#
@sydneydowful Neither Dillon or Rourke were playing Bukowksi. They were playing Henry Chinaski. Bukowski didnt actually live all of those stories he wrote using Chinaski as his main character. He made alot of that shit up. Either way, they werent playing Bukowski.
Bukowski is my favorite writer of all time, the book Hollywood is all about his experience writing this film, well worth a read. Thanks for taking the time to up this. Cool movie that I've seen many times, and am happy to watch many more. :)
theres a movie called factotum with the alter ego henry chinasky again in a movie based on the book factotum with matt dillon man this one is much better, because mickey created a character thats a looser but a looser that i see the potential and the irony of ending in the gutter and you identofy youself with points view plus the whole body language fits, with factotum dillon didnt do any justice to bukowsy, my opinion... maybe because the man is not arround anymore...
mickey hated doing this movie, and thinkits the best,he said, about bucowsky, i liked his books they werent bad... for a drunk... the director was a prick... even so, the end result was a master piece...
Don't bother, it only goes up to 7, Incomplete...

I saw both this and factotum and mickey rourke definitely captures bukowski's speech and mannerisms more so than dillon .

at some moments in this movie, Mickey Rourke reminds me of Dane Cook.
