  • @Znitso I drive an off highway logging truck, and the these trucks have 3 different means of slowing them down. The foundation brakes, witch we cool with water on steep or long hills, the "jake" or engine brake, and the retarder. The Retarder works on oil pressure in the transmission to slow the truck down. If you have any questions feel free to email me and I will explain in greater detail. Byron

  • The comment (frying the diff) If you use the jake and or the retarder on a steep switch back your inside drivers can not keep traction trying to do all the braking of the load, as the load shifts to the out side they will start to skip and grab blowing up the diff or the axels maybe even the drive line.

  • if we would only recycle there wouldn't be much need for these guys, there would be more trees, which leads to a better environment and less trucks that pollute our planet

  • @RISINGTENSION i dont care about recycling mother nature can suck meh dick logging is the way to go and if you dont like it wipe your ass with plastic

  • There were some inaccuracies I noticed immediately.. after the posting of course but I was in a hurry 'coz I didn't want to miss my aerobics, haha! Anyway the exhaust valves get open near top (t.d.c.) of the compression stroke - obviously I was thinking as if there were the combustion cycle in progress right at the top piston position which is wrong 'cause the injection is off, my bad. Btw, eg. at 2:08 - 2:13 and 2:17 - 2:25 as well the driver uses the jake

  • Devastation

  • OKAY....going down hill with Jake Brake on, how does this fry the differentals ???

    explain to me >:-O

  • @davethomas4061 dont question their ways... just learn :O Lol.. i wanted to know that too but if he says so then its true :D

  • @eltrokeromexicano

have 30 yrs back ground on heavy trucks, rebuilt Cats, Cummins, Detroit, trans 5 , 9, 10, 13, and 15 speeds complete, overhauled all diffs, med to heavy trucks. For the life of me, do not understand how Jakes on, will burn up a diff, someone is feeding you alot of Shit !!!! Not made at you, just the cocksucker that fed this to you....

  • @davethomas4061 well... i dont care what you have done.. well yeah i do... but i was saying it in a way of paying respects to those people... :)...

  • @davethomas4061

It means the load is feeding back through the diff back to the engine so the reverse load is on the back of the diff gears therefore it cooks the diff and sometimes rips the ass end out of the gearbox. Most trucks haul out and up, not out and down this is why they have different problems to for instance a mine haul out.

  • how sustainable is the logging industry in canada? do the trees they use grow quickly. I guess the sheer size of the place gives them alot of resources and they don't have to worry so much about lack of resources.

  • HOLY SHIT thats a big load.

  • wow try the camera put in wheel

  • these trucks also have what is called a dyno brake. It is fitted around the main drive shaft and uses magnetism to reverse the spinning.Very effective hold back with heavy loads.

  • I hauled logs near Lillooet BC and when i started a sesoned veteran told me ... just be careful, there are two ditches on this road one is 2 feet deep the other one is 2000 ft deep! and he was right...

  • Does anyone mind explaining a bit more specific about the "breaking system" on these trucks? Did he say: "I use the re-charger more then i use the brakes"

So, there are 3 types of brakes, as i said. Someone, please explain :)

  • @Znitso I b4eleive that they have an engine retarder (jake brake), conventional breakpads 0 which are water cooled and also an electro magnetic system (which I understand not at all). If anyone has a better explanation I would love to hear it. I am only a humble cameraman

    Dylan

  • @dylanwinter1 good video buddy, bit shorter though its really interesting

  • I think he (driver) may be calling the exhaust brake the jake brake

  • i thought so too

  • Hey, how much does the average Trucker get payed?

  • @dylanwinter1 I think the retarder is the exhaust break, the Jake is the engine compression brake.

  • @dylanwinter1

The 3 braking systems are the conventional wheel brakes which heat up and fail rather quickly.

The jake brake which opens the exhaust valves in the engine which slows the engine down.

The retarder. There are many different types of retarders, some are electromagnets on the drive shaft which work like an electric motor trying to turn the other way, some are hydraulic which have the drive shaft going thru a container that is filled with fluid when needed to work.

  • @dylanwinter1 I don't know if they have magnetic breaks, but i do know how these work^^

Actually they use the Foucault's currents principle. Basically if you have moving metal in a constant magnetic field there will be some Foucault's currents generated in the metal. These will generate a magnetic field opposed to the first one, hence the breaking. So you just need a strong magnet and some metal (Al works fine) These breaks will only slow down moving things, so no breaking while standing still.

  • @dylanwinter1 Hi guys. Hope i can help the brake thing. the Jake brake makes a compresser out of the engine slowing you down the retarder uses oil to develope friction to slow you down. Then you have your regular air brakes on all wheels as on any truck except these trucks can run water onto the brake drums to cool them. Hope that helps.

  • @dylanwinter1 retarder and jake brake are not the same. Retarders are either hydraulic or electric and are commonly in the transmission. They help larger vehicles to maintain or reduce speed while going downhill. The retarder is kind of like an electric motor but reversed,. The jake brake is found in the cylinder head of the engine and holds the intake and exhaust valve open at the same time to prohibit combustion in the engine.

  • @ar3406 The system based on timing changes as concerning the exhaust valves, intakes work as they normally do. When activated JB its mechanism opens the exhaust valve(s) right away as the piston passes the top dead center and discharge the pressure while the piston heads downward until roughly 360 degrees later (crank) the exhaust is closed and intake valves are open - then ca. 180 later the both are closed when the piston rises and compresses till again after T.D.C. the exhaust valves are open

  • @dylanwinter1 electro magnetic is the retarder, jake brake is an engine brake and what he called foundation brake is just normal foot brake ( air powered )

  • @dylanwinter1 @Znitso The Jacobs brake retards the engine by converting it to a compressor. The retarder he refers to is related to the retading of the automatic transmission in the truck....foundation brakes are the basic set of water-cooled brakes fitted to the wheels....does that clear it up?

  • @dylanwinter1 ya your right about the brakes on them trucks they got water cooled foundations and a valve brake (jake) and the retarder which is the magnetic setup on the drivline im not totally sure how its works but know that it uses magnetic force to slow the driveline down

  • pretty much the same thing.but in different areas of the truck. the jake brake uses the engines own compression to slow the truck while a retarder uses the control of exhaust gases to provide the same effect(not as powerful usually)

  • oh yah and the third would be air powered drum brakes, very powerful, but will heat up quickly when speeds and weight are high.the drums expand when heated too much causing the brake shoes to not apply enough pressure.

  • @gordieg74 if you see in some of the shots there is steam coming off the brakes - which are cooled by dribbling water over them

    Dylan

  • hey now thats a simple solution. i havent seen that set up before. but i dont log. i used to haul for the oil patch.

  • @gordieg74 "Foundation brakes"= Air brakes, Drums. those are located on the inside of every wheel. some truckers as myself disconect the front sterring ones for other reason."Retarder"= not an engine brake. ita actually more like a transmission brake. this is located on the back ov the tranny and is atached to the drivelive to slow the truck down, very effective."Jake brake"= engine brake. this is a brake that is very effective but yes is wrong to use in certain times. Located on top of engine.

  • @alaskaloggerman Retarders are located on the front of the transmission.

  • A retarder works off of the torque converter and transmission. Its a chamber that fills with fluid off the torque converter building back pressure, controlled by a foot pedal.

You're describing an "exhaust brake" a cheap version of a Jake brake.

  • @Znitso They have 3 sets of brakes: the Jake brake which is an engine brake that makes the engine act like an air compressor, retarder which can be either electromagnetic or hydraulic and is usually coupled in the transmission and normal air-operated wheel brakes. Electromagnetic retarder uses magnetic fields to generate the braking effect and hydraulic retarder uses hydraulic fluid for the same effect.

  • @TangoOneNiner Hey thanks alot for your explanation!

  • @Znitso No he said retarder. The trucks have normal brakes i.e a drum or disc on each wheel, then they have an exhaust brake(Jake brake) this works by closing off the exhaust system, then you have the retarder, they work in a number of different ways, the best I have had was on a DAF it was fitted with a Voith, basically this acts via hydralic pressure to restrict the prop shaft in between the gearbox and the diff, they are highly effective, but can overheat if used hard. Hope this helps.

  • @Znitso A Retarder is a magnetic braking system. Basically it's a stator mounted in the chassis. The stator is made up of electric coils. The rotors are placed on both ends of the stator and are fixed to the propeller shaft which runs in the middle. When the stator is activated, the electric coils use energy from a spare battery and creates a magnetic field which slows down the rotors thus slowing the prop shaft thus slowing down the vehicle.

  • @Apheres Ah ok, really heplpfull. I think i understand it now. Thank you for your answer!

  • @Apheres these trucks were built back in the 60's/70's and that technology related to diesel electric locomotives....called Dynamic Braking in todays terms.

I'm keen to learn the technology in this as Iv'e never heard of a truck using electro mag braking.

There is such a thing being used as kinetc braking/acceleration???

  • @Znitso It's called the retarder .

  • @Znitso the have a hydrolic retarder behind the automatic allison 6 speed tranny some also have a jake brake on the engine as well as water cooled brakes the retarder peddle is where the clutch would be

  • @BlackMac525 Thank you for your reply :) So they have watercooled brakes aswell? Wow, i only thought that racetrucks had that.

  • det måste vara rediga maskiner för sånna stora träd 0.0

  • grymma maskier

  • ah375 first off how much furniture do you have in your house and what do you think the houses frame is made of. plus they replace trees that they cut down dumbass.

  • trees don't live forever. It says in the Bible to be good stewarts of the land. Its not a good testimony to let trees die left and right and not use them for humans benefit. With proper management of the land we can have sustainable forestry.

  • if you dont like logging wipe your ass with plastic

  • @renly3 god knows you cant make paper from anything other than trees!

  • but your computer is made out of wood

  • Yeah ok there buddy, those are much larger trucks, and a lot more dangerous load.

  • i still think that russian trucks are better

  • i now the driver richard wild he works for us in fort st john bc macro industries he runs a 20 ton picker

  • i dont care what anyone says, i think trucks are the ultimate machines on the planet. these things are powerful, fast and they just look good on the road. i know some guys that race with these things, its illegal but they do it anyway. its great

  • apprehensive..good one.

  • WE love those BIGGGGG trucks!!!!!

  • those who say they would love to do it, you still wan to try it in the snow? try decending those steep grades loaded on ice. then tell me you want to do it

  • @mike198748 I drove those trucks they dont haul in snow only the highway trucks do and they only carry a 1/3 of the load and use chains.

  • good sound the motors ...

  • Yes! New generations of Loggers must put up with constricted budgets, more severe roads and having to use their sheer skill and the machinery... to Get your "toilet paper" to town. I have a love/hate relationship with log trucks... Love the power... hate the complications and no money...

    Best regards,

    Stressed out ex-logger,

    TweakBOB

  • i would like to do this job!!!

  • not as hard as it looks but if u lose concentration ilt be ova

  • hujowa robota kurdex

  • whats he calling a retarder is also known as a brake saver.. basically a torque converter on the fly wheel that restricts the flow of oil thereby slowing the engine.. Only seen in heavy haul trucks.

  • plus the tranny if they are manual

  • cool vids! would love to see the full length version of this

  • Its called Loggers....

available from Old Pond in the UK and Diamond Farm in the USA

  • It's Canadian Western Red Cedar they are hauling and it's not so light until it's dry ... which it obviously not, when in log form and just been cut down.

  • these trucks probebly go through brakes every month and a new clutch every 3 months but my hats off to them

  • Is that like 85 feet or something? What poundage you hauling like 90,000 pounds..the guy said the rig itself goes about 80K?

That would be interesting for me..but I think I could handle this. The retarder is a MUST HAVE. Seems like the jake brake would be a waste tho... I prolly wouldn't attempt this over 8 mph...too much weight ! !

  • They weigh 1 times empty a high way rig loaded ,which is 80000lbs,and can haul 3 times that weight ,so they are 240000lbs loaded coming down a mountian! Thats a white knuckle ride there my friend! These guys have a lot of balls and experiance!!

  • jake brake on a corner... no no nooo it'll send you right round down the ditch and turn you over, maybe kill you... shows you how stupid the computer on trucks are, it thinks youve stopped when your going to die, am i right or am i right?

  • "I don't think I would cal it scared."

He's right, we used to call it an adrenaline rush.

  • it will happen to any one that they will lose a truck or have problems look at the size of load and the way they hills are wow !

  • isnt hayes closed down now?

  • I ran a 1991 Freightliner pullin super-B off Vancouver Island around BC that had a retarder "brake saver". I swear by em, easily twice as strong as a Jakes brake. Only downfall is you really have to watch your oil temperature...... so easy to over heat the oil if your not payin attention.

  • much respect!!!!! keep trucking

  • THESE GUYS HAVE NERVES OF STEAL... =HOW DO THEY DO IT ?

up and down the Mountains, where there are no paved roads is where these Guys drive these Monsters.

    Its UNBELIEVABLE.

  • I have the DVD, best logging video ever made! I've watched mine 5 times! Glad someone filmed this before it disappears. I think HAYES has already downsized since this was made. An era is coming to an end.

  • It is sad the logging idustry in BC has taken a big hit, it was a way of life for many. My mother cooked on the barge camps back in the 60's. All the equipment was taken in by barge and these off highway units would bring the wood down to the water to be tugged down to the mills. She has many fond memories and still talks of it often.

  • to oldbearswitch- oh, thanks for the info. and i'll look it up in wikipedia thanks man.

  • port alberni??

  • I spent two months on the Island filming for the DVD "Loggers".

  • HI Brian, the foundation brakes are probably the regualr service air brakes. The jake works by modifying exhaust timing so that the cykinder compresses air and then its released b4 it can push on the piston on the power stroke. A retarder is like a torque converter where one side is stationary, so moving the other side connected to a moving shaft eats energy. Look in wikipedia, eh?

  • I know how a jake brake works, but how do the retarter and the foundation brakes operate?

I'm going to automotive school and am curious.

  • the retarder barkes work with the transission...the reatarder helps stop the truck ....it retards or slow down the transmission speed...the river pulls the level in the dash board...most european trucks have these... american trucks don't but i heard that now u can have it as an option...volvo,scania,daf,mercedes,man,iveco trucks have this retarder as standar equipment...

  • take a look at Logging Canadian have their say

  • yes i have and im impressed about what you guys can do with trailers!

  • great videos, we don`t have so large trucks in little norway

  • have you seen the other ones on my page

  • Are these natural forests with animals living in them or man made forests?

  • most of the big trees come from first cut or virgin forest - the smaller timber comes from second growth - and animals live in both.

    Take a look at

    Logging Canadians have their say

  • around here they use regular highway trucks with logbeds and they pull them up the mountain with skidders...where is this filmed?

  • take a look at "three truck tow"

  • Think they weigh 40K empty - 100K loaded = 60K logs

  • if u weigh 80k empty, 100k loaded, that is only 20k pounds load, that is might slight
