This video is extremely old. It took a long time of working with him to teach him to push from the haunches and naturally put his head down in the process. He no longer moves in this hollowed out manner with his nose in the air. I knew that "setting his head" was not the answer, which is why I worked with him over time to push from behind rather than wrestling his head down. He was pretty darn young in this video. I have more recent ones posted for comparison.

If he is hollowed out at the walk or intermediate gait, you shouldn't let him canter. You are teaching him to go incorrectly. Please do not think "setting his head" is the answer. True collection comes from the haunches...takes time for your horse to get strong and to learn how to balance himself under the rider. When he does, the head and neck will take care of themselves. You can teach him to give softly to the bit, but you need to help your horse learn how to carry you correctly.
