Way, way back in time, about a million years ago (ok, it was only 1975) I had a young soldier in the cab of my 5/4 who had a tape player with him. We were on a night convoy driving under blackout conditions across central Germany in the very cold night. The only tape he had with him was a single by Michael Martin Murphy. We must have listened to that song a hundred times. I can't recall his name, but I can see his face whenever I hear this song. B 1/333 FA, Wiesbaden FRG.
@gawnej I can certainly relate. Was with the 2/2 ACR (Bamburg FRG) running border patrol inside the 1K zone. This song still brings back memories of then.
@RamsesReturns not a cheesy song at all,and i totally agree with you, most of these robots walking around now, dont have any feelings for anything as beutiful as this,2012 will change all that, they wont walk and talk so smug then, prepare now!!!!!

This song is so sad.It makes me think of a elderly lady. I took care of.I told her someday she'll see her little boy.And what a beautiful day that will be.She said both her boy's.I said oh right both your boy's.She died not even two weeks later.this I dedicate to you dear dear mary.rip
Why bother posting the video if you're just going to fly your ridiculous logo over the screen? Just put a waterseal in the corner like EVERYONE ELSE IN THE WORLD. Jeez.
In The 70's kids, the tunes sometimes told stories in their lyrics, sometimes the lyrics were haunting like this song. Too bad you don't have it this good now; Pity!
i was about 10 yrs old when this song came out. I thought it was about a little girl riding her pony called Wildfire in a blizzard and they died. I use to think why did she take the pony out in a blizzard?
@divernater Truly a beautiful tune and I'm sure a fitting tribute to your mum. may you find peace in rejoining her, just as I look forward to seeing my precious Mother in Heaven. what a great, great song and so evocative and yearning in it's simple beauty.
(Continued from previous.) The homesteader? He has tried to do things right (planting seed potatoes by the dark of the moon), but then lost the crop to early snow. Discouraged, he dreads facing the planting season again in the spring. Tonight (on the SEVENTH night in a row that the owl hoots – a folk belief) he will leave his downtrodden sodbusting earthly existence and go riding with the woman/girl and Wildfire.
Discouraged homesteader eagerly anticipates imminent death and meeting a legendary ghostly woman known to descend Yellow Mountain to the farmlands below during blizzards (whirlwinds) riding the pony Wildfire. Pony, not horse, suggests girl, not woman. Speculating wildly, the girl, out trying to save her crop from the killing frost (clear night), was overtaken by sudden blizzard. Called to Wildfire. He busted out, dies beside her dying body, and the two ghosts ride off. (continued)
This song has always touched me deeply...I can't believe it was 36 yrs ago when I first heard this...I was 18...WOW...But no matter how many times I hear Mike sang this song it still reaches my soul...It nice to see all the video of him (Wildfire timeless, priceless and forever) Thank you Mike.
My band opened for MMM in 1991 in Atlanta at a club called Miss Kitties when he had delved into country. He made the mistake of doing his hits first (like this one and Carolina in the Pines), and then doing his (then) current album stuff which was a bunch of cowboy songs (like prairie style not country). Half the crowd left. He was still good, but they just didn't dig that old throwback style. He should've done a few of the cowboy songs and mixed in the hits. Bad call on his part.
I'm reading some of the comments and I can't believe some of you can't figure out what this song is about. Yes, the horse busted down his stall and ran out into the blizzard but it's who ran out after him that is the premise. A young girl, most likely his daughter, who is really lost. The "hoot owl" is his sign of hope, since even his crops can't survive the cold, he wishes for a day they (he and his little girl) will ride off together on Wildfire. Now you can really cry.
@crazycassandra2011 Close, The lyrics are the ruminations of a homesteader who has become much disillusioned with farming and obsessed with the ghost of a young woman said to have died searching for her pony, Wildfire, during a blizzard. The homesteader hopes to catch up with the ghost mounted on her pony and with them to escape from farming, which he bitterly calls "sodbusting."
I do cry when I hear this song...this song was out when my oldest son was born and he is deceased now...this song just wipes me out! But I love it...such a cool song...this is dedicated to my son Jeffrey....
I remember one of the last times I saw my grandma alive was when I was helping my uncle paint her bedroom and this song came on and she smiled cause me and my uncle start singing this. R.I.P. Leola Elizabeth Stringfellow Sloan. I love and miss you so much!!!!!!!
Julio: If you can't post videos without crappy adds all through the song, don't bother next time. Once would be OK at the end but not while we are enjoying such a great tune. Show some heart buddy.
Un video es para disfrutarlo Julio, no para sufrirlo viejo...! quitale el título-propaganda. Mas antes las letras hubiesen sido de traducción de la canción al español y solo eso!

Katy Perry is a temporary fart in a strong wind, but like the man below said, this song will outlive her by generations and she'll never sing anything this well or this good.
This song was playing in my parent's car after we saw "Orca" I was 5 years old. Great song! When I hear it now and really listen to the lyrics,it makes me cry
That could well be, but it's called 'artistic license'. It's a fair bet he's not actually riding away on a ghost horse with a ghost woman who froze to death, either. So whether or not there are mountains in Nebraska isn't actually relevant. Read a damn poem someday. Expand your mind. Then maybe you can just like a great song.
I remember the solo piano part at the beginning of the song as well as at the end. Very nice video. I grew up listening to this song as a kid in the 70's. Music such as this has almost simply disappeared!
lijluvr356, Please do explain. You were the first to say that "anything that can get lost and die in a killing frost does not deserve to live," therefore, what's so special about your tomatoes that they do deserve to live? Apparently, someone/something is to die in a 'killing' frost or we would not call it 'killing,' would we? Maybe severe, extreme, harsh, strong....but not killing.
anything that can get lost and die in a killing frost does not deserve to live: when there's a killing frost, all you really have to do is cover your tomatoes...
grew up with this song....he knew how to grab your heart strings....great song writer.....a great visual writer...anybody who thinks this song is stupid....needs his head checked.
4:13 YouTube video: Michael Martin Murphey sings Wildfire that he co-wrote with Larry Cansler; 1975.
March 14, 1945: birth of Michael Martin Murphey in the Oak Cliff section of Dallas, Texas; American country music singer; six gold albums, including Cowboy Songs.
If I ever become A millionaire, I will be donating 10% of my earnings to You Tube, for their existence and being able to providfe Music Lover such as myselfm Gems such as this one and the countles others, To true Music lovers , Music has no COLOR or RACE so any negative comments about race or color show the nature of the commentor
I feel sad that some chose to post such derogatory remarks and comments about what is truely a beautifully crafted piece of music.. How immature, I pity you because it's your loss if you cant appreciate work such as this.......perhaps in a few more years and with a little more maturity??
@NamIsIll so you see the video to a Timeless song and the first thing you think when seeing the guy is "Buttsex!" . Says a whole lot more about you than him
@NamIsIll - Hey, it's a song about a horse, in the country. What are you talking about, using homophobic comments? This song stands the test of time. What sort of garbage do you listen to? Justin Beiber I bet. Ha........
It was old country folk superstition if you hear owls hooting or calling outside your house someone was going to die. The cure in some parts was putting your clothes on inside out.
@wtw88 You're right, and Michael intros the song with story of how it was written...this vid was taken I guess from one of those"Don Kirchner Rock Concert" -type shows from mid 70s, when all songs were lip-synched to go along with time restraints- kinda like KTel crap back then. Lousy way to treat a true, American classic song. Timeless and full of grace and beauty.
its sad my daughter has a old time voice that could make her a lot of money but she likes the modern music.and would like to sing that hope. someone will get it in her head when she goes to college to pursue this and live a life we all dream of
This is a haunting song, sung by a beautiful voice. I'm thankful I was in my teens in the 60's & 70's and heard the best of the singers/songwriters. Can't say the same of today's music, unfortunately. Thanks for the post! I love to listen to the "old" songs, but I enjoy watching the artists sing them even more.
Absolutley the most beautiful song! I was born in 63 and glad i heard the best songs growing up. Lots of meaning and wonderfully sung. This is when music was true muisc. Today movies,tv ,music is horrendous!
Reminds me of watching the winter sunsets over the farm that bordered ours when I was just a kid. It really brings back the 70's for me. Thanks for posting this song.
LOVE,LOVE, LOVE this song! OMG....it used to make me cry when i was younger.....shoot it still moves me today. Thank you for sharing this great video.
Love this song, well written, great piano. His voice is not that great, almost flat and poor range, BUT a great song song from 1975!! He "wrote it" about a dream he had as he lay on a friends floor!!
Superb. A piece of musical poetry that I well remember from the early to mid-seventies. Brings back pleasant memories of less complicated and threatening times.

to me this song is about the horse as an animal and its Soaring Spirit in such creatures
I have a telepathic experience most every time I'm near a horse and I can feel a little of that
animals mind touching mine. So I also cry a bit ......... I cannot stand to hear a horse crying

I feel sad that some chose to post such derogatory remarks and comments about what is truely a beautifully crafted piece of music.. How immature, I pity you because it's your loss if you cant appreciate work such as this.......perhaps in a few more years and with a little more maturity??

cdreid9999 11 months ago
@NamIsIll - Hey, it's a song about a horse, in the country. What are you talking about, using homophobic comments? This song stands the test of time. What sort of garbage do you listen to? Justin Beiber I bet. Ha........

@TheKnightSky
It was old country folk superstition if you hear owls hooting or calling outside your house someone was going to die. The cure in some parts was putting your clothes on inside out.

Watch the upload titled Michael Martin Murphey - "Wildfire". It goes for 7 min 43 sec. Live. This is dubbed. What a shame.
wtw88 11 months ago

Love this song, well written, great piano. His voice is not that great, almost flat and poor range, BUT a great song song from 1975!! He "wrote it" about a dream he had as he lay on a friends floor!!

@Newzchspy I think the original Intro to this song had no piano and was done on the guitar,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Superb. A piece of musical poetry that I well remember from the early to mid-seventies. Brings back pleasant memories of less complicated and threatening times.
