Acupuncture is not like drugs in that it does not have nearly as many adverse effects as even the most benign drugs have. His statements on drugs say plenty about that. Not all acupuncture mechanisms are known or even able to be tested. However, there are some CT studies that have shown that it is directly correlated to reactions in the brain. Maybe it only masks some symptoms, but it can be an effective treatment for chronic illnesses that cannot be treated by drugs.
Placebo acupuncture and random needle placement have been shown to be just as effective as needles placed by a trained acupuncturist. The explanation given for why needles placed in and around the dorsal horns of the spinal cord makes sense physiologically, but that's about where it ends. Acupuncture's effectiveness has nothing to do with "qi" and invisible currents through our bodies. I would much rather have a treatment that is well understood and observable.

Good science is proving the efficacy of natural methods, diet, supplements, vitamins, movement therapies, etc. every day. Wake up! NIH funds research at some institutions now for natural medicine!
@ssnatcherss Natural Medicine is a science. The fact is that the field is full of a lot of so called "authorities" with little or no widely accepted credentials to back up their positions, so most of the more "educated" doctors in society write them off as Snake-oil salesmen as you say. However just like the guy in this video says, the so-called medicine of today treats symptoms, not causes. In my experience there is no bigger way to let a problem get out of control than to mask its existence.
the problem i have with the way you presented this video is the "drugs vs. alternative medicine" theme. good doctors don't chose one and run with it, there's a middle ground. i also have a problem with the different definitions of "alternative medicine" used. for many, it IS an "alternative to science." you are absolutely correct that the scientific method has its limits. but when it comes to what people do to their bodies, i'd rather take the scientific method over snake oil.
The next time you put cayenne on your food, unless your a woose, ask yourself how you feel...are you sweaty, does it make you hot, burn your tongue...it is the very action of herbs that makes them medicine.
Capsaicin Cream is made from cayenne peppers!
Try mint...cooling, helps digestion, makes your breath smell good
Aspirin is from the Willow Tree
But aspirin is a chemically altered version.
Both have salicylic acid in them, the active ingredient.
One minor quibble over the body's ability to repair itself. Our bodies are not like salamanders regrowing tails. We don't heal like a slow version of Wolverine from Xmen. Sometimes we take damage and we do not entirely recover. It has been awhile since people have seen Polio victims for example. Amputated limbs don't come back. I have had injuries to my back in my teens I never received med care for. Chiropractics failed to heal me years later. I practice tai chi to prevent further degeneration.
the example of meds as putting tape over the check oil light is great.I think it is great you can acknowledge when allopathic medicine is appropriate. You don't take St. John's Wort or Lavender oil for a car wreck. You need an ER. Medicine offers restorative treatment. Much of alternative medicine is preventative. You follow good nutrition to prevent illness. Exercise is more efficacious then SSRIs for warding off depression. So ask your doctor if getting off your ass is right for you.
ON THE MONEY about discerning the good medicine and bad medicine... except probably chiropractors. chiropractic should also be relegated to the emergency situations and "has it's place" zone. what really heals you is prolotherapy is acupucnture.
origin of humans and the world. what would be the name for that? janology? originology?
evolution isn't the only theory that explain our origins. it is a sacred cow. and when it does get challenged, people get tripped up and confused that science and evolution are synonymous and that any theory that does not adhere to naturalism and an absence of a higher being or any intelligent design becomes synonymous with religious and by proxy illogical or "non-scientific". this is the first and biggest
Oh, also one more thing. Pain medication really doesn't support your argument. Pain medication has nothing to do with survival - unless you are going to kill yourself because you can't take the pain anymore - or is keeping you from working and surviving financially. It allows you to exercise, perhaps, just like an antidepressant might help you to exercise or go to work, but of course, you are healing yourself and doing your own surviving in both cases. These things are all about health.
Also, all symptoms and conditions and mental states are not caused solely by the environment. I don't understand the idea that genetics play no role in overall health. I was depressed - then I adopted a vegan diet, reduced stress, exercised and found more social support, and waited half a year - and I was still depressed. Making sure I minimally functioned would have taken more hours in the day than I had. This is when even your narrow definition of medicine could step in.
MachineAmbition you are correct. All symptoms and conditions and mental states are not caused soley by the environment.
In my video I purposefully leave that part out. I am stating that these environmental factors make it difficult to regain health of a stressed body when present.
There is a lot of debate as to what sets illness in. Some say emotional factors, others genetics.
As far as genetics I always refer to the Pottenger Cat study.
"Science" is also knowledge, facts, and "medicine" is also preventing damage to the body or mind. It can even mean magical or supernatural ideas. I prefer broad, inclusive definitions to ones shoved through tunnels. Most medical research in psychology is actually about things that are functioning properly. Abnormal or clinical applications are only part of the picture. Of course drugs are overused and can be dangerous and lethal even when not misused. Btw, my faith is in "alternative medicine."
I find this video extremely frustrating. You talk a lot about what NOT to do when experiencing pain but little practical advice about what TO do. i.e., How can an accupuncturist and/or chiropractor realistically help me find the root of the problem behind my headaches?
Chiropractors actually have a lot of success addressing headaches. I have a friend that handled her migraine headaches with chiropractic.
In some cases headaches can be caused by a reaction to something in the diet or environmental toxins, in which case a certified clinical nutritionist would be your best bet.

Advil covered up the pain while your body got better. It didn't actually fix the problem. It is like putting paper over an oil light. The difference is a car can't fix its oil leak and the body in many cases can.
Antidepressants cover up the pain while you can arrange to make lifestyle changes the pain was preventing you from making, even if poor choices caused that pain to begin with.
MachineAmbition that is a good point. I wish more doctors would take that philosophy versus telling the patient you will be on this for the rest of your life.
I am being treated, successfully, by a CNN for a condition that is considered incurable. You should make more vids about specific treatments for conditions the medical model is either ignorant of or mistreats. Or ask any of your patients to comment on your methods as compared to what they had before they saw you. If you want to attack the ultimate sacred cow say something about self medication with vitamins and herbs for things like anxiety or serious mental/physical diseases.
Acupuncture helps aleviate pain and is also believed to help cure problems going on in the body. Which is great only IF you already know what the root of that problem is. Acupuncture cannot help you find the root of your problem. I wish this guy would have talked more about HOW TO find the root of the problems rather than spending so much time talking about what not to do.
Mike, I would like some videos done by Naturopathic doctors especially the cause and effect research they do and how they treat causes and not symptoms helping the body to heal itself. Nothing against Joseph and the others by any means, I just like diversity and I and my family have been personally helped by my own self-study knowledge of and expert advice from Naturopaths.
A personal case in point for me is Gout (also called metabolic arthritis) which I suffered from last year. I could not stand, walk or sleep without constant pain. Pain drugs only masked the pain and I did not want to be a cripple the rest of my life. I found out what internal organs lack of function was causing the condition and then changed my diet: on the advice of my Naturopath I also treated my kidneys, liver and bladder with suggested herbs. I can now run at need; the condition is gone!
This is the way this sort of thinking always works. Intellectually lazy, agenda driven misinformation being disseminated by more or less well meaning people. these people fool themselves into lowering their standard of proof and critical thinking because their conclusion is psychologically pleasing to them. This is the precise reason why honest research is so demanding. It is too easy to fool oneself when you have an agenda.
Straw man @ 4:57. You state an oversimplified version of common modern medical practice and then refute that position. Granted, you did credit medicine afterwards, though it was a little annoying to see the straw man go up at all.
Some good points of view. Thank you for the video.
I am interested what natural cure the author recommends for insulin dependent diabetes. I am interested to know what he would recommend to a patient with atrial fibrillation to prevent clots from forming in his atria causing stroke. A spinal adjustment? These are not acute issues, these are chronic health problems and modern medicine is required to address them.
hightrump I am glad you take an interest in this topic. I do not say that drugs and surgery are not needed. Those are diseases which you named. That is the field of medicine. The alternative would work to increase the overall health of the person as a preventative. What if those patients came in years prior and had made lifestyle changes that allowed them not to go down that road.
Medical problems in the disease stage should be handled by a medical doctor. Alternative healthcare is best used for functional illness. A person starts to notice they don't feel as good as they used to. Headaches are more common. Getting sick more often. More pains abound. This is the area where they have a chance to turn their lifestyle(diet, exercise, exposure to harmful substances) around to prevent disease. In otherwords they do not have a clogged artery yet.
Yeah, I agree lifestyle changes be used to prevent and treat functional illness - and I'd include "disease stage." How many people take cholesterol drugs and eat sausage and buttered toast for breakfast, cold cuts for lunch and more animals for dinner? Too many. I think mental illness or "problems with the psyche" that affect motivation or even the will to feel better need something more, especially if alternative health or healthy lifestyle was practiced before. Access is a problem too.
People do expect quick fixes from a pill - increased regulation on doctor kickbacks and drug advertising would probably be more helpful there than this approach, however. There's also a great deal of willful misunderstanding of medication in this video. No, high blood pressure is not caused by lack of drugs - but, it is a harmful enough symptom to warrant it's chemical lessening. Even drug companies publish brochures about lifestyle changes that need to happen as well - mainstream understanding.
Medicine certainly has its place. Especially in disease conditions. It allows something to change while the underlying cause can be addressed in the meantime.
Would you agree that psychiatric medication may also help people control symptoms while the underlying causes are addressed? Would the use of medicine to help someone better manage (with lifestyle changes) a chronic disease state (if you believe this exists - please comment) makes sense?
Chronic means lasting more than three months so diseases certainly fall under this catagory. These medications do not fix anything so long term use I have a problem with. It is like using crutches for 30 years. Does that mean that what you say does not make sense. No. There is an old saying, You gotta do what you gotta do. If you are going to kill yourself and diet and exercise don't reduce this then you gotta do what you gotta do to survive.
I agree with the analogy about using crutches for the most part - would probably disagree w/ it only for certain conditions like some extreme forms of bipolar, schizophrenia. True though, that even then medications are no cure, and that sleep modification and other routines and basic diet/exercise hygiene and things that aid in that like alternative health/treatment can be very beneficial and can help someone gain insight - thanks for the response!
Ok, listing some sources for your facts would be professional, either on the comment box or @ end of video.
@ 3:16. Your statistic does not take into account a population demographic. Simply multiplying the amount of people (under 65 or over 65) by your percent use (0.7 or 0.3) and then comparing the two numbers would give you the statistic you are looking for. Don't be afraid to do some math, since without it your statistic is incorrect and misleading.
oh god I hate these videos where you bitch abut how bad the system is, I'm not impressed,
"The Art of Medicine Consists of Amusing the Patient While Nature Cures the Disease"
Voltaire.
And I dont see any problem with this at all,If I have a headache now I want something for it, I can fix the problems later to prevent it in the future,
I did not say the system was bad, but that people have a mis-understanding of what medicine is. What health is and what disease is and how they relate.
you know when I first saw this comment I figured it was the opinion of an adult living in the fast lane. On impulse I check your profile. You are only 16 and you speak the gospel of the modern day consumer. That gospel is preached 24-7 on tv by advertising. When I was younger than you, I tried breathing, pressure points. I learned to beat headaches naturally. I refused to just take something now for it. Even today, 20 years later, I only break out pain meds after trying everything else first.
I try all sorts of treatments I have all these problems because every night I wake up at 12:30, its so strange then I feel refreshed and cant sleep until 3, I think I'm a lemon of a human being but thats nothing diazepam cant fix. my psychologist gave me these relaxation tapes I do them every day but I still wake up what the! halp
OK. Many people are really living in poverty. They can hardly afford heating, etc. And children ...and so on
Now many are seemingly pressurized to HAVE to depend on the doc and medicine because alternative help costs a big whack of their income whereas here in UK doctor's 'help' is on the 'national health service'
I really would like to know more about different alternative treatments or ways to keep your health. What are their principles? How do they work and how can we determine IF they really work - as a guideline find the right practitioner?
Aren't treating diseases essential for the maintenance of a person's health? Maintenance is of course different that "building" health. You say drugs are to cover up and mask things people feel aren't good - sure, but that's the misunderstanding, not the actual purpose. Medicine includes putting that leg you broke in the car accident in a cast, it may involve a blood transfusion, it may involve physical therapy, or pain medication. These help your body not just survive, but heal.
Do you know what they call alternative medicine that's been proven to work? Medicine.
It's an old joke, I know, but its still apropos, and just because some methods don't actually use medication doesn't mean that they're any less woo. Subluxations are just as much snake-oil nonsense as homeopathy

Con7ent 6 months ago
Alternative health does not mean "alternative science".
Does the validity of something depend on A) natural law or B) whether or not it's been tested w/ the scientific method?
If science discovers something to be true, was it true before science discovered it?
Many forms of alternative health have been validated and/or discovered through science as well.

the problem i have with the way you presented this video is the "drugs vs. alternative medicine" theme. good doctors don't chose one and run with it, there's a middle ground. i also have a problem with the different definitions of "alternative medicine" used. for many, it IS an "alternative to science." you are absolutely correct that the scientific method has its limits. but when it comes to what people do to their bodies, i'd rather take the scientific method over snake oil.

I think you should research the subject more.

Snake Oil...pharmaceuticals can be too.

SFJane 3 years ago
the example of meds as putting tape over the check oil light is great.I think it is great you can acknowledge when allopathic medicine is appropriate.

MachineAmbition 3 years ago

Good video. Can you talk about the important of sequence eating and how it can improve the digestive cycle or system, if you will? Thanks

I find this video extremely frustrating. You talk a lot about what NOT to do when experiencing pain but little practical advice about what TO do. i.e., How can an accupuncturist and/or chiropractor realistically help me find the root of the problem behind my headaches?
Elizabeth01010101 3 years ago
Chiropractors actually have a lot of success addressing headaches. I have a friend that handled her migraine headaches with chiropractic.
In some cases headaches can be caused by a reaction to something in the diet or environmental toxins, in which case a certified clinical nutritionist would be your best bet.

Elizabeth, this video wasn't about fixing anything it was a comparison video. Please see my seminar on chronic pain for tips.

Advil covered up the pain while your body got better. It didn't actually fix the problem. It is like putting paper over an oil light. The difference is a car can't fix its oil leak and the body in many cases can.
nutritionaustin 3 years ago
Antidepressants cover up the pain while you can arrange to make lifestyle changes the pain was preventing you from making, even if poor choices caused that pain to begin with.
MachineAmbition 3 years ago
MachineAmbition that is a good point. I wish more doctors would take that philosophy versus telling the patient you will be on this for the rest of your life.

kwestionEverything 3 years ago
Acupuncture helps aleviate pain and is also believed to help cure problems going on in the body. Which is great only IF you already know what the root of that problem is. Acupuncture cannot help you find the root of your problem. I wish this guy would have talked more about HOW TO find the root of the problems rather than spending so much time talking about what not to do.

Mike, I would like some videos done by Naturopathic doctors especially the cause and effect research they do and how they treat causes and not symptoms helping the body to heal itself. Nothing against Joseph and the others by any means, I just like diversity and I and my family have been personally helped by my own self-study knowledge of and expert advice from Naturopaths.
c16467 3 years ago
A personal case in point for me is Gout (also called metabolic arthritis) which I suffered from last year. I could not stand, walk or sleep without constant pain. Pain drugs only masked the pain and I did not want to be a cripple the rest of my life. I found out what internal organs lack of function was causing the condition and then changed my diet: on the advice of my Naturopath I also treated my kidneys, liver and bladder with suggested herbs. I can now run at need; the condition is gone!
c16467 3 years ago

These are not acute issues, these are chronic health problems and modern medicine is required to address them.
hightrump 3 years ago
hightrump I am glad you take an interest in this topic. I do not say that drugs and surgery are not needed. Those are diseases which you named. That is the field of medicine. The alternative would work to increase the overall health of the person as a preventative. What if those patients came in years prior and had made lifestyle changes that allowed them not to go down that road.
nutritionaustin 3 years ago
Which medical problems do you feel alternative medicine is best equipped to deal with?
hightrump 3 years ago
Medical problems in the disease stage should be handled by a medical doctor. Alternative healthcare is best used for functional illness. A person starts to notice they don't feel as good as they used to. Headaches are more common. Getting sick more often. More pains abound. This is the area where they have a chance to turn their lifestyle(diet, exercise, exposure to harmful substances) around to prevent disease. In otherwords they do not have a clogged artery yet.
nutritionaustin 3 years ago
Yeah, I agree lifestyle changes be used to prevent and treat functional illness - and I'd include "disease stage." How many people take cholesterol drugs and eat sausage and buttered toast for breakfast, cold cuts for lunch and more animals for dinner? Too many. I think mental illness or "problems with the psyche" that affect motivation or even the will to feel better need something more, especially if alternative health or healthy lifestyle was practiced before. Access is a problem too.
MachineAmbition 3 years ago
People do expect quick fixes from a pill - increased regulation on doctor kickbacks and drug advertising would probably be more helpful there than this approach, however. There's also a great deal of willful misunderstanding of medication in this video. No, high blood pressure is not caused by lack of drugs - but, it is a harmful enough symptom to warrant it's chemical lessening. Even drug companies publish brochures about lifestyle changes that need to happen as well - mainstream understanding.
MachineAmbition 3 years ago
Medicine certainly has its place. Especially in disease conditions. It allows something to change while the underlying cause can be addressed in the meantime.
nutritionaustin 3 years ago 3
Would you agree that psychiatric medication may also help people control symptoms while the underlying causes are addressed? Would the use of medicine to help someone better manage (with lifestyle changes) a chronic disease state (if you believe this exists - please comment) makes sense?
MachineAmbition 3 years ago
Chronic means lasting more than three months so diseases certainly fall under this catagory. These medications do not fix anything so long term use I have a problem with. It is like using crutches for 30 years. Does that mean that what you say does not make sense. No. There is an old saying, You gotta do what you gotta do. If you are going to kill yourself and diet and exercise don't reduce this then you gotta do what you gotta do to survive.
nutritionaustin 3 years ago
I agree with the analogy about using crutches for the most part - would probably disagree w/ it only for certain conditions like some extreme forms of bipolar, schizophrenia. True though, that even then medications are no cure, and that sleep modification and other routines and basic diet/exercise hygiene and things that aid in that like alternative health/treatment can be very beneficial and can help someone gain insight - thanks for the response!
MachineAmbition 3 years ago
Ok, listing some sources for your facts would be professional, either on the comment box or @ end of video.
@ 3:16. Your statistic does not take into account a population demographic. Simply multiplying the amount of people (under 65 or over 65) by your percent use (0.7 or 0.3) and then comparing the two numbers would give you the statistic you are looking for. Don't be afraid to do some math, since without it your statistic is incorrect and misleading.

OK. Many people are really living in poverty. They can hardly afford heating, etc. And children ...and so on
Now many are seemingly pressurized to HAVE to depend on the doc and medicine because alternative help costs a big whack of their income whereas here in UK doctor's 'help' is on the 'national health service'

no...and drugs do have their place, but not for health and health building. Disease yes, but increased health and longer life no.
nutritionaustin 3 years ago
Aren't treating diseases essential for the maintenance of a person's health? Maintenance is of course different that "building" health. You say drugs are to cover up and mask things people feel aren't good - sure, but that's the misunderstanding, not the actual purpose. Medicine includes putting that leg you broke in the car accident in a cast, it may involve a blood transfusion, it may involve physical therapy, or pain medication. These help your body not just survive, but heal.
